Washington State ferry officials say striking marine engineers will be replaced if they
don't return to work by tomorrow afternoon.
The general manager of the nation's largest ferry system, Captain Nick Tracy, announced
the deadline this afternoon, the third day of a wildcat walkout.
Engineers want on strike because of a new state law that removes most of the collective
bargaining rights of ferry workers, putting them under civil service instead.
Tracy says he hopes the matter will be resolved in a meeting of ferry workers four hours before
that deadline.
Tracy says ferry workers have been asked to consider a back to work agreement proposed
by the U.S. Department of Labor.
