Carrie, welcome to the show. Nice to see you. I like your name that was my grandmother's name. Carrie, from what your daddy says you're pretty active over at school. I stay very very busy. Are you playing on the high school girls basketball team? Of course I was playing volleyball for a while and then we just moved right into basketball so it's like I'm constantly going. You mean bouncing the ball? Yes. Do you also play in the band? I used to. I don't anymore. I really work on music at home now. You write? No, not yet. I'm playing the piano right now. That's an old Brenda Lee song. Did your daddy write that song? Right, that's the song my dad wrote. I wrote this with a buddy of mine. Ramsey Kearney and I. Ramsey Kearney had a song called Emotions. And Carl Smith recorded it in 1957, I think, 57, 58. And I like the song and I rewrote it and gave him half of it. And Brenda Lee recorded it so that's how that song came about. It became a big Brenda Lee hit. Yeah, a big hit. I'll tell you what I'm going to do, I'm going to cut this off because we're going to let the audience get in on this in just a moment. We'll take a break and we'll be back in a moment. Now there's a remarkable product that turns ordinary tap water into clean, fresh tasting drinking water in seconds. The Brita water filter system. She over there. Cindy, why don't you have a seat? This is Cindy Tillis and she'll be singing shortly. And Cindy, I want to welcome you to the show. What we're going to do here, we're going to allow our audience to quiz the kids or Mel. And Gary is a station at one aisle and the killer is a station at the other. And Gary will come to your aisle first and I will ask you folks to identify yourselves, tell me who you are, where you're from, and then direct your question. So, sir, we'll start with you. Okay. Thank you very much. I'm Mims Boswell, Jr. from Casiasco, Mississippi. A question? I came to Nashville in 56. I've been in the business about, what, 30, 32 years, 33 years. Thank you. All right. Let's go over to the other aisle and we'll ask this lady to tell us her name. Opal Lubas, Danbury, Connecticut. Okay. Your question? I wanted to ask Mel if he had spent a lot of time in Texas and if he knew, and he seems to know Webb Pierce real well, and I wanted to ask him if he knew Jim Watts. He was a disc jockey in Beaumont for many, many years. Yeah, I remember Jim. Yeah. He stuttered, didn't he? I'm not sure, but my brother's married to his sister and he passed away about a year and a half ago, but I knew he had spent many, many years out there. Yeah, I remember the name. And I wanted to tell you that my brother played in 1937 and 38 with Webb Pierce on a little program sponsored by the Coca-Cola Bottling Company at KMLB in Monroe, Louisiana. With Webb Pierce? Yeah, my brother was only about 50. Hell, I didn't know Webb was that old. No, he... Webb's been lying to me. My only kids, my brother was about 15, 15 and 16 those two years. And then Webb moved on to the Louisiana Hayride and Preston wouldn't go because he was too young. All right. Well, I'll remind Webb of that when I see it. Yeah, Preston Hart, A-J-R-T. Okay. Okay, thank you. Thank you. Let's go over here to the young lady on the next aisle. I'm Anna Boswell from Kosciuszko and Mel, I would like to know what you and your family are doing for Thanksgiving. Well, thank you so much, honey, that's all for now, you and I appreciate that a whole lot. What did you say? Oh. Mel, she wants to know what you're doing for Thanksgiving. What, what? She wants to know what you're doing for Thanksgiving. What are we gonna do? Yes. We're gonna eat, honey. I didn't know what you said, I couldn't, I can't hardly hear no more. But, oh yeah, we're gonna have a nice turkey and some ham and some green beans, as usual, and give thanks for our many blessings, honey, thank you so much. All right, let's go to the other aisle. I'm Sandy Patter from Hickory Hills, and I seen you at the Lexington House November 5th, and you were great, and I'd like to ask Sonny Boy, how was life growing up with all those girls? It was okay, they're pretty nice girls, you know, a lot of times they'd get blamed. Like I said, they were nice girls, and sometimes they'd get a little mean, but other than that, they're, they're nice girls, and it was okay. Okay, thank you. All right. My brother, Richard Tillis, he said, I'm gonna fix them, he said, I'll get them some Boston gloves, so I turned Sandy, Sonny Boy loose, and boy, that's just about killing each other with them Boston gloves. All right, let's go to the lady in the red top. Hi, I'm Dottie Brewer from South Carolina. I have a question for Mr. Tillis. I'd like to know if he stutters for the fun of it, because we enjoy him so much, we love him. What did you say, did you say- She wants to know if you stutter- For the fun of it. For the fun of it. No, no, honey, I really stutter. The older I get, the less I stutter. I think it's because that I'm in the arena more than I used to be, and no, I wouldn't do that to begin with. You sing so great. If I was to get up and, yeah, I can sing without stuttering, but sometimes I get messed up. Hey, you got me confused, lady. Okay. Thank you, no, I really just- Mel, Mel, I need for you to leave your chair and go over and take your position with the band, if you will, please. Okay. I have a question, have any of the kids ever written a song that Mel has recorded? Has that happened yet? Nope. It hasn't happened yet. Well, I would get those demos out and start playing them for them. Okay. We're going to go back to Mel, who's brought the statesiders with him tonight. Those are his other kids, the famous Mel Tillis band. And here's a Mel Tillis hit you may remember called, Who's Julie? Here's Mel. I lost the table over coffee just this morning. A woman called me by surprise without a warning. And she said, honey, you talked in your sleep. Then she began to weep. And she said, tell me now and tell me truly. But who's Julie? Oh, tell me, tell me now with a blank look on my face. I searched my mind for an answer or excuse of some kind. But the words wouldn't come and my mind went blank. And slowly my head just sank and she said, honey, you know I'd love you truly. But who's Julie? What's this hold you've got on me? You're on my mind in my dreams. You know you should not be there, Julie. I'd like to say, Julie, oh, just a friend of mine. But I know that would not satisfy your mind. So, Julie gave me something that you did not. Oh, she remembered what you forgot. Honey, I'm sorry I have to tell you so cruelly. You know, when I first recorded this song for the first time, and I brought it home for the first time for my wife to hear it, she beat the hell out of me. And after she got tired of beating on me, I finally got out that I told her that it was a racehorse up in Kentucky. And a few days after that, though, I came home. I said, honey, have I had any messages today? And she says, yes, Melvin, she said your racehorse called today. Then she beat the hell out of me again. And now, you know, don't you ever ask me again, who's Julie? Oh, tell me, tell me now. Tell me now. Oh, tell me now. There's more to go live on Nashville Now. You're watching the Nashville Network. An important message from the cable television industry. Local cable companies are glad to offer their customers a wide variety of programming choices. But beginning January 1st, the Federal Communications Commission will force cable companies to comply with a complex set of FCC rules called syndicated exclusivity, or CINDEX. These rules could affect what you see on cable television. The CINDEX rules may force your local cable company to black out some of your favorite TV programs on regional or other out-of-town stations if a local broadcast station has requested exclusive program rights. We don't like the thought of any program blackouts, but we must, by law, comply with these rules. You can be assured that we'll work to minimize any confusion or disruption caused by CINDEX. We'll also stay in touch with you to keep you informed on how the CINDEX rules may affect your program choices. This message has been brought to you by the National Cable Television Association and your local cable company. Alright, now we're going to go with the girls. They're going to sing a song. Hi, I'm David Holt. And on this stop on the Celebration Express, we'll visit with grassroots humanitarian and local hero, Daddy Bruce Randolph. Denver, Colorado is a big city. Nearly two million people live in the metro area. And like any other city its size, Denver is constantly trying to deal with the problems of the poor and the homeless. But there never seems to be enough to go around. Fortunately, there's a gentleman in downtown Denver that decided a long time ago that he could do something about this problem. So each year he takes it upon himself to feed and give aid to thousands of people who otherwise might have to go without. He does all of this out of his barbecue restaurant on Bruce Randolph Avenue. He's affectionately known as Daddy Bruce. How many meals a year do you serve now? Oh, I don't know. I made it a year, but, you know, of course, just like Thanksgiving, you see. This past Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving before then, I put out over 100,000 plates. 100,000 plates out of this restaurant? Yeah, out of this restaurant. That's amazing. Amazing is an understatement. Each Thanksgiving, thousands and thousands of people who might normally go hungry are fed thanks to Daddy Bruce. With help from local volunteers, including the National Guard, the phone company, and the Denver cab drivers, Daddy Bruce will give nourishment to the masses. He fills their stomachs with food, but equally as important, he fills their spirit by letting them know that somebody cares. Caring and giving just come naturally for Daddy Bruce. When he was growing up, he didn't have a lot to be thankful for. But instead of being bitter, he decided to try and make others happy. Now you do this on Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas, Easter, and your birthday. Yeah, my birthday, but Thanksgiving is the biggest one. I read somewhere that you really, when you were growing up, you didn't have much celebrations for any of those holidays, and you never had a birthday celebration until you were 46. You sure know. So is that what made you want to do it? I guess, I think so. Let other people celebrate with you? Yeah. Well, that's a wonderful thing. Yeah, that makes a lot of people happy on my birthday when I used to be sad. Yeah, I bet it does. Yeah, yeah. If somebody comes in here hungry and it's not a holiday, what do you do? Oh, that's every day. It's every day? Yeah. What do you do? Every day pass, I feed them. You feed them? Yes. How do you know somebody's not just taking advantage of you? I can tell. I can feel it. Some guy come in and said, Daddy Bruce said, I'm hungry. Can you give me something to eat? I said, yeah, sit down. He said, no, fix it to go. I said, if you're hungry, you set your butt down over there. You're fixing it to go. I said, go, stop fooling me. If you're hungry, you sit down and eat. You've been rich. You've been poor. You've been rich. You've been poor. Money doesn't mean that much to you, does it? As long as I got a place to stay, you know, I'm happy. A lot of people would say, oh, yeah, well, if I had a business like this and I was making money, I'd give stuff away, too. But you've been doing it long before you had a lot of money. That's right. And what advice would you give to people, just anybody, who really would like to use you as an inspiration? Yeah, it's more precious to give than it is to receive. I like saying it. I get away a lot, but I get it back, you know, it's just coming back. I guess if satisfaction were money, you would be a rich man. Oh, yeah, I get away a lot of stuff and I enjoy doing it, you know. I get some joy out of it. Yeah, it looks like the more I give, the more I get back. I just got so much stuff. You see that old preacher talking about your cup running over? See, my cup's running over. It's all out in the streets. Over 200,000 people each year fed for free, not by the U.S. government, not by the state, but by an 89-year-old man who believed it when he read in the Bible that it's more blessed to give than receive. With a few more like Daddy Bruce, we could just about straighten this old world out. And by the way, his barbecue is fantastic. This is David Holt out on the road with the Celebration Express. Thank you, David. David Holt with the Celebration Express brought to you by the Discovered Car. When you want to make it special, real cheese makes it easy.
