I mean, we're committed to making a relationship work and to being happy together, and that really frees up a lot of those worries about when you start dating someone and you're saying, oh, I want to impress this person, put on my best face, which may not be the face I always wear. But you'd never met before that mall. Actually, we'd met like five days earlier, but we'd talked probably about an hour and a half total over the course of that week. I picked up the application five days earlier. Okay. Elizabeth brought along a little love letter David gave her last night, and you wanted to read it? Yes, I would like to. This is part of it. Sweetie. Sweetie. I just wanted to remind you how much I love you. Can you read it? Live TV. You have to sing. Despite the different ways we approach daily life, I am overjoyed to have you as part of my day. I look forward to holding your hand as we walk onto the stage of tomorrow. We met in one of the strangest ways, yet it is a simple challenge to love one another that keeps us together. I'm so glad you decided to take me into your life. Thank you, my love, for being my beloved wife. You're sweetie. Well, now, there's the mall marriage that worked out. One year down. David, good luck to you. Good luck. Good luck. What do we know? We don't know a thing. It may last forever, because you're tied to each other. Unbelievable. Okay, this next letter really touched our hearts. Donna and Karen wrote us about the unexpected loss of their older sister and the priceless gift that she had left behind. Take a look at this. Dear Oprah, Last July, my sister was thrown from a horse and due to a head injury, died the next day. In the days following her sudden death, I felt pain that I cannot begin to describe. I wanted to hear from her or talk to her just one more time. It was very difficult not being able to say goodbye. One day, as we were sadly going through her belongings, we found her gratitude journal. The very last entry that she wrote was about the day that we spent on her porch just talking and spending the day together. To me, that was her way of saying goodbye. While going through my sister's gratitude journal, we sat on the floor in her room and laughed so hard one minute and cried our hearts out the next. She was our older sister and we looked up to her. We were just so excited about the things that she had written about us, the trips and the big things that she was thankful for and some of the small things that she was thankful for, even just for her car, for it just running. God used that journal to bring such comfort and peace to me and for that, I am forever grateful. Because of the very last word she wrote, I feel that she spoke to me one last time. Oprah, I thank you for that. Wow. Your sister Phyllis was a seventh grade teacher, is that correct? Yes. And I hear she loved books. Yes, she did. Loved books. Well, recently the middle school where Phyllis taught dedicated a room in the school's library in her honor. Is that true? Yes. It's called the Hollingsworth Reference Room. Well, when Barnes & Noble Bookstores heard about Donna and Karen's special sister, they also wanted to make a donation to the school's library in Phyllis' name and this is what they're sending. Barnes & Noble. Great. Fantastic. Thank you, Barnes & Noble. Love that bookstore. Thank you so much. Next, viewers who are half the size they used to be, literally. Two of our most successful weight loss stories ever. But first, we love getting letters like this next one. Take a look. Dear Oprah, I had to write you and thank you for saving my mother's life. My mom was watching your show on breast health and decided to do the self-breast examination on herself along with your audience. She couldn't believe it when she felt a huge lump at the very tip of her breast. For many years she has been doing self-breast exams but she didn't realize until your show that she was doing them incorrectly. She called the doctor immediately and within a week she had a mastectomy and she just finished chemotherapy. I cannot thank you enough for educating millions of women. If not for that show, my letter today would certainly have a different message. Warmest regards, Michelle Johnston. Open wide, it's New Frisky's Dental Diet. Cities don't get any bigger than this. I'm proud to be a native New Yorker. The fabulous city. Gorgeous park. Biggest little boutique. We've got the biggest building. Ever wonder why New Yorkers have such big mouths? Because we eat big pizza, like a big New Yorker from Pizza Hut. 16 inches of real New York pizza dripping with cheese at a very un-New York price. $9.99. Honey, you should never give it away. Big New Yorker, new from Pizza Hut. It's beautiful. Okay, so we're reading my mail today. People often write me wacky requests. Take a look. Dear Oprah, I'm a 24-year-old pre-dental student at Southwest Texas State University. I know this sounds weird, and I know that you use a mechanical toothbrush. But I was wondering if you might be willing to give me any type of toothbrush you might be throwing away. I already have a toothbrush collection of almost 30 toothbrushes. This would be so exciting to me. Even an empty tube of toothpaste would work. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Nicole Uefek. Dear Oprah, my mom and I are both big-busted women. We both wear a 38D. I would like a bra that lifts me up but is still sexy. My mom and I saw your show where you talked about your perfect bra. This is a fabulous bra. I love this bra. The name started with a W, but neither of us can remember what it was. Thank you very much, Jessica Adams. Okay, Nicole, I won't be sending you my toothbrush. That's gross. Isn't that gross? Okay. My favorite bra is Waco, and those are the bras I wear the most. Every woman should go and get measured for your particular breasts, whether you're a flat egg or not. This is the Waco bra that I'm going to be sending to you, 38Ds. If you're like bigger-chested, I find those work very well for me. There are other women here who swear by Olga and some of the other brands, but the Waco. Waco, Waco, Waco, Waco, Waco are my favorite ones. Some of the most poignant mail I get is from viewers who have made the connection and won their battle with weight. One viewer even sent me her scale. There it is. It says, Oprah, you can have my scale because I'm free, free at last. Sarah Scott wrote to us about her incredible success. She lost over 200. I'm not talking today because I'm off of caffeine. I went and I'm doing that real age thing where you take the supplements, you're taking the vitamin E, you're not doing the caffeine, and now I can't talk. Okay. She lost over 200 pounds and gained a whole new respect for herself. Take a look. Dear Oprah, four years ago I was morbidly obese at just over 400 pounds. I was unhappy and unhealthy. I did not like to go out alone as I was the recipient of stares and ridicule. I went out with my husband so he could act as a buffer between me and the rest of the world, protecting me from hurt. I couldn't fit into airplane seats without the armrest raised. I even had my own seatbelt extender for airplane travel to avoid the embarrassment of having to ask for another on future trips. Then one day I saw your show with Bob Green discussing your weight loss and exercise program. The exact moment that inspired me was when Bob Green said that you were the busiest person he knew and that if you could incorporate an exercise program into your life, then anyone could. I started with just 15 minutes, and that 15 minutes of walking was enough to leave me red-faced and winded. I made the connection and cut my size in half and lost 200 pounds. People tell me that I'm brave and an inspiration, and I try to help them and encourage them in their endeavors. But I don't forget that it was you who inspired me and moved me to change my life in the first place. Sincerely, Sarah Scott. God. Please welcome a 200-pound lighter, Sarah Scott. Hi, Sarah. Bravo. Bravo to you. Bravo. Thank you. Bravo to you. 200 pounds. That is like, you know, for every one of us who, you know, has been overweight, fighting the battle every day, when you look at the scale or look at the numbers you have to lose, you get overwhelmed by the numbers. 200 pounds is already another person who is already overweight. So how did you break through that wall? I got to a point in my life where I was so low, there was no place to go. Even though you're smiling there. I know all those pictures. I just asked myself, where do you want to be in five years? Because I knew it would take a long time. And I just made small changes month after month. And eventually the small changes added up and made a big, big change. Big difference. And it took over four years. To date. To date. I'm not done yet. Yeah. It's every day. As we know. It's a permanent change. Yeah. Over four years and you just set your sight for that. So you went from 15 minutes to? An hour. An hour? Five days a week. And I started working with a personal trainer a couple days a week. And recently added a belly dancing class. Sarah? And I'm not going to demonstrate. I wouldn't ask you to. Thank you. I wouldn't. Our next viewer letter is from Reginald Moyer, who after years of struggling too with his weight, made the connection and saved his life. Take a look. Dear Oprah, my weight has been the biggest challenge of my life. I remember all the pain and frustration I felt as my weight increased year after year. In my mind, I had nothing else to live for except food and how to get more. Friends were no longer a concern because I lived so long without them. In January of 1997, my weight soared to a whopping 374 pounds. I was at the end of my rope and suicide was right around the corner. I had to make the decision to live or die. Then on February the 19th, after reading and understanding your book made the connection, I decided to live and to make my connection. Three years ago, I had a 62-inch waist and now my waist is down to 36 inches. The success isn't that I have lost 170 pounds, but it's that I now believe in me and nothing can change that feeling. Oprah, thank you for sharing your story. It gave me a reason to live. Forever Thin, Reginald Moyer. I'll cue it out. Please welcome Reginald Moyer. He's lost 170 pounds. Bravo, bravo, bravo. Wow, that is amazing. It's the same thing I was saying to Sarah. It's an incredible commitment. Amen, it sure is. Amen, it is. Amen, amen. Do you feel like a different person? Totally, totally. Just being 62 inches, you know, there's so much weight you're carrying around. It's like a whole person that's on the inside, you know, and just like having people look at you when you go to restaurants, like why are you even here, you know, and the opinion of people about you. I always think it's different for guys, isn't it? Some of the same things that Sarah was saying, you feel the same. I always think it's different for guys because there is certainly a double standard. You can be a big guy and people just go, oh, that's a big guy, but you felt some of the same shame. Because females would look at me because I was overweight, you know, and so that was the same problem. My friends, I mean, they were supportive, but yet they didn't understand of like going to amusement parks and not being able to ride the rides with them and, you know, going to the restaurant and they want to sit at a booth, you know, but I couldn't sit at the booth because your stomach is hanging over the table and everything. You know, little things like that. I couldn't even tie my shoes, you know. And when you say make the connection, the connection for you was what? What was the connection? Well, the first thing, the first way it started was in January, the first week of January, a lady came to me and spoke a word in my life and said that the year of 97, you would lose 100 pounds or more. And so when she spoke that word, I didn't know how I was going to lose it. Then all of a sudden, I just saw your book on TV, Make the Connection. And so I took the book and I read the book, you know, and then I literally just began to follow each step, step one through step, you know, 10. And I could only do, when I went out on the workout, I could only do two minutes on the StairMaster. And the treadmill would cut off for me because I was so heavy. And it was very embarrassing. The gym, the treadmill, you know. And so I'm laughing now, but I sat down against the wall and began to cry because there was a girl next to me that was looking at me and she began to smirk and laugh at me, you know, like, oh, why are you even trying? And African proverb came to me that he who laughs last, laughs best. And I was like, you know what, I'm going to do this for me now. It's live or die. I was at the end of my rope, suicidal, you know, had no hope. And I was like, this is the last ditch effort. All those other programs did not work. But this program truly changed my life, truly. And it's been like now two years of keeping it off and maintaining it and stuff. And, you know, it's truly been a blessing. Amen. Reggie and Sarah are looking stylish in clothes by Saks Fifth Avenue. My former personal trainer and exercise physiologist, Bob Green, has inspired many people, including myself, to make the connection and to lose weight. He has a new book coming out in April called Keep the Connection. I'll be buying that. And it's about to set out on a very exciting journey, exciting for you. That's right. Okay. Tell us about it. Well, you know, the first book, Make the Connection, I did the basic book tour where you fly city to city, and I'm telling you, it stressed me out like crazy. So I'm looking forward. I'm going to be pedaling city to city. I starred in Long Beach, California. Bob is biking across America. When we used to run together, I said, oh, wouldn't it be nice to bike across America sometime? It was just the idea for running for me. Well, you said it was a great idea, except you didn't like the pedaling part. I don't like the pedaling part, and I don't like the seat part. Well, as a matter of fact, I have a little gift for you today, because I do want you to join me. Yeah, I told you. It's a special seat. Oh, my goodness. And that's supposed to help me, Bob? Well, it takes the pressures off those special areas. It's also good for boys and girls. It's revolutionary. It was studied by gynecologists and urologists, and it takes the pressure off. Because when we used to bike ride, I'd say, well, Bob, I know now I will no longer be able to bear children. But this will let you bear children after the ride. Actually, when you're biking, most people think, oh, it's your legs. It's your legs. It's more the buttocks getting sore and the back being hunched over for so long. So you can do half of your training just by sitting on this. Look at that. You're liking that, huh? I'm liking that. OK, so Bob is going to be biking across America, and he's literally starting in Long Beach and going all the way to where? New York? He's going to start pedaling until June 3rd in New York. Yeah, and Bob, we live in the same neighborhood. I see him during the day. That's why I just said you clean up so well, because I see him on that bike pedaling and pedaling. Sweaty as can be. Yeah. How are you training for this? Just every other day I do a short ride, which is about two hours, and that's speed work. Yeah. And then I do a long day, which just two days ago I was 85 miles and all day long, five hours on the bike. Well now. Isn't that exciting? Now, how do you organize something like this, Bob? Because I know this is a lot. Well, I first needed to get sponsors, and let's see, I thought to myself, well gee, I have orange juice just about every day of my life. I'm going to call the Florida orange juice people. I love Florida orange juice. Well, they're loving you right about now. I love Florida orange juice, because their oranges are better than some others. That's right. But I don't want the other people in Iowa calling me about your oranges, but I love Florida orange juice. That's good. That's a good sponsor. So they're my primary sponsor. I also have Bally Total Fitness. They're organizing all my events. I have events throughout the country that people can participate in. Like doing what? Well, one, I have book signings just about in every city. Uh-huh. How are you going to sign books and ride all day, Bob? Well, that's the thing, that I'm going to be paddling. I get off my bike and, you know, I'll clean up and then just sign books. Bob does have one of the cutest butts in America, I have to say that. And I know that because I used to run behind him all the time. How is your butt these days? You know, I never come on here without you embarrassing me. No, really. How is your butt holding up with all this activity? It's holding up. You know, as we age, that's a problem. You know that? I know that, Bob. Well, so that's what I need to do is pedal across the country to keep it perked up. So I've told Bob that Gail and I are going to join you for some of the flatter areas. Right, right. Like, so you pick the states that are flat, like Bob was saying, I want no part of the Rockies, so you're going to actually bike through the Rockies. Through the Rockies. In fact, the first part of the trip... Uphill. I go through the Mojave Desert, which is really probably the toughest area, then over the Rockies and into Telluride, which is where we met. Yeah. Well, I won't see you there. If you can find some flat areas, I'll join you. I think I can do that. It'll probably be in the Midwest. And I'd like a little cushion on that seat, too. Well, you got your seat, right? Okay. And I've got a bike attached to it as well. If you're interested in riding along with Bob, you can get more information. You'll be like Forrest Gump going down through the country. And people will be riding along with Bob. If you're interested, you guys, you might want to do a part of the... Would you? Like a section of New York? Mm-hmm. Okay, wherever you live. You call 1-800-FITNESS. Yeah, as a matter of fact, I also have a Keep the Connection class that I'll be teaching in cities throughout the country. Why do you have to teach a class and ride all day, Bob? Well, the first thing, they asked me would I teach a master cycling class after pedaling 100 miles. But no, it'll be more of a motivational class that I'll teach. And you can also join me on a section in various cities. And again, you call 1-800-FITNESS or you show up at a Bali Total Fitness Center. And basically, make sure you bring your workout clothes because they'll even throw in a week free exercise. Oh, I need to get one of those... You know, I know I have a cushion back here, but I need one of those cushion things to ride in, like a cushion padded seat. I got the whole outfit for you. You do? It's presented. Wherever you show up, you'll have an outfit. Okay. And some orange juice from Florida. And some orange juice. Thank you very much. Thanks, Bob. Coming up later, a viewer who says her dramatic story could change the way you see your own life. Back in a moment. You have the power to create life. Next mission, save Dad from the newspaper. We're going through my mail today. A lot of our viewers write to tell us about their unusual names, like this letter from Ms. Moo. Dear Oprah, my last name is Moo. It is utterly unique. My father had a bar called Mr. Moo and my little brother has a restaurant next to it called Moo's Utter Plate. My other brother is a dentist, Dr. Moo. I have collected cows for 12 years and have over 3,000 of them. My husband said, one more cow and we'll have to move to another plate. Great. Thank you, Ms. Moo. Here's another letter we got in the mail. Well, it was important to let you know. Last week we did a show called What's the Catch? We'll let you know about all the extra costs and some products and services. Well, Excel Communications says we gave an inaccurate rate for their 10-10-2-9-7 dial around service. Their rate is 10 cents a minute every day, but we said it was 15 cents a minute some days. And they also point out that although they add a 4.4% government assessment to your monthly bill, some other companies also add a similar charge. Only they do it within their minute rate. So what we're trying to tell you is there is an additional government assessment and some companies add it at the end of the month and some add it by the minute. Did you get that? Okay. All right. Now we straightened out the prompter. We're live. Here we go. Recently we received a letter from a viewer who asked us if she could share her remarkable story with our audience. And we hope you'll find it as inspiring as we did. Take a look. Dear Oprah, I'm writing to you because I sincerely believe that my story can change lives. When I was two and a half years old, I was electrocuted and lost both of my arms. The doctor said that if I did live, I would be a vegetable for the rest of my life. God had a different plan for me. The doctor says, you're going to be a vegetable. God said, no, you're not. I had very low self-esteem growing up. I hated school. Kids were mean. They would do mean things, push me down, trip me, knock my bag off my shoulder, just to be mean. My parents and friends and family never let me use my, if you want to call it handicapped, they never let me use that for an excuse. I was never allowed to say I can't. I learned that if I accept myself and I feel good about myself, then other people will too. Oprah, I never gave up. I use my feet for everything. I do things with my feet that some people can't do with their hands. So many people will come up and tell me, oh, I feel so sorry for you. And I just say, why? I'm alive and I'm happy and I'm healthy and I'm doing whatever I want to do. Don't feel sorry for me. I've been married for three and a half years and I have an eight-year-old stepson and a two and a half year old little boy. I drive, cook, play piano, all with my feet. We're going to do four more and take the same steps. I'm also teaching aerobics. I don't consider myself handicapped. I focus on what I can do, not what I can't do. Don't get discouraged in life. Don't let other people discourage you. You can do anything you want if you put your mind to it and your heart is in it. There's not a day that doesn't go by that something doesn't impress me with it. And every day is a new adventure with it. Oprah, I hope by sharing my story, people will see the greater possibilities in their own lives. Barbie. Amazing. Wow. That's Barbie. Now, I understand that when you first saw her, you saw her in a pool and you couldn't tell that she didn't have arms. Is that true? No. She was swimming the opposite way where I was sitting. Uh-huh. And all I saw was her tail end. And you couldn't see that she was armless? It didn't even occur to me. Okay. And then you asked her out while she was still in the pool? Correct. And then you got out of the pool and said, you can change your mind if you want to? Basically. Uh-huh. And he didn't? He didn't. No. She was too cute and had a nice tail end. I know. It's going around in America. So does he. That's fantastic, really. You are an inspiration. Thank you. Because you can do anything if you never give up. Pretty much. Pretty much. I think everyone needs to learn that. Uh-huh. Don't give up so easy. Don't let things get you down. When Kelly Zydowski, a young mother of two from Georgia, wrote to us, we were impressed by her incredibly positive spirit, much like yours, all the more remarkable because she just come through not one but two personal challenges that tested both her body and soul. So we wanted to share her story. Take a look. Dear Oprah, I'm a 35-year-old divorced female with two young girls ages 6 and 8. I'm the owner and operator of a health food store in Woodstock, Georgia. I've been through some very tough, exhilarating, and eye-opening experiences in my life. I also was fortunate to experience breast cancer at the age of 29. I didn't look at it as a death sentence. Once I gave up the fear, my whole life changed. It allowed me to look at life differently. All right, around again, this way. My spirit was hungry for peace and balance, which I didn't have, and breast cancer brought me back there. It brought me back to a place where I knew I needed to start taking care of myself, not only physically but mentally and spiritually, too. Reclaiming your spirit is like going home, putting yourself somewhere where your soul is totally at peace, where you put back all the pieces to your puzzle and have gotten pulled away from you in the daily grind. It's almost like exhaling. Just so you know that you wipe the top end. The health food store gave me a sense of purpose by being able to help other people, like really give back what people gave me. Going through a mastectomy, that's a big issue in itself. It's not the end of the world. You don't have to look at yourself as an ugly duckling. You can look at yourself as something that God created and made beautiful. I'd never go back and change anything about having breast cancer because it taught me a lot about myself. It taught me that I didn't need to be perfect, that what I had was good enough. Amazing Grace. We'll be right back. I want to show you something else that if you were made for me took 110 hours. Back in a moment. Music This is a 3TV News Brief. Six students were arrested today after an undercover drug bust at Highland High in Gilbert. We'll have details coming up on Good Evening Arizona.
