So far rescuers have recovered 39 bodies from the remains of the shanty town. Officials say 263 homes were engulfed as earth and rock from a mountain slide slid over the township following three days of heavy rain. Another 45 drownings were reported from other parts of Puerto Rico as floodwaters washed out bridges and inundated highways. Coast Guard helicopters and National Guard planes are now air lifting emergency supplies to towns isolated by the avalanches and flooding. One of the Palestinian guerrillas who hijacked the Italian cruise liner Achille Loro in the Mediterranean has told Egyptian officials that none of the 400 passengers has been harmed. After the ship anchored off Port Said, the hijackers demanded the release of Palestinians held in Italy and other countries along with 50 detained in Israel. As our Middle East correspondent Peter George reports, the captain of the Achille Loro appealed against a rescue operation. But preparations for just such an eventuality are underway. The Italians are spearheading international efforts to move warships and aircraft into the area where they can be ready to strike at short notice. American ships and British facilities on Cyprus are backing the Italian moves while Egyptian Navy vessels are again shadowing the Achille Loro. But it's also accepted that assaults by sea or air will probably result in heavy casualties amongst the attackers and the hostages. In other news, the Federal Government has reaffirmed its determination to de-register the Builders Laborers Federation following comments made by Norm Gallagher since his release from jail. And the Victorian Government has warned the state's nurses that they'll face stand downs and possible prosecution if they strike.
