16-year-old son. Let me have the surgery. It's just too risky. The answer's no. When dad orders me to go watch some TV, I know something big is going down. Just knowing your parents, it takes a lot of guts. The case like this is torture for everybody. I want you to call that lawyer right now and tell her you made a mistake. I'm moving out. Karen Valentine and Bo Bridges star in A Fighting Choice. This is the last chance I've got. Good evening and welcome to the Disney Sunday Movie. Tonight's film, Fighting Choice, is about a teenage boy who has epilepsy. It's a story of how he and his family struggle to cope with this condition. We portray the subject matter and the physical seizures it creates realistically. Our intent is not to shock you or make you uncomfortable, but rather to share with you a young man's extraordinary courage and his determination to have the kind of life that you and I take for granted. As parents, I encourage you to watch this film with your children. As a family, you'll be glad you did. for watching. He's one of the country's leading neurosurgeons in charge of one of the world's leading research centers. I'm sure he had something interesting to say. He did mention that the Raiders would go crawling back to Oakland by the end of the decade. Did you tell the doctor about your Petit Mall absences? Yeah, he said be a good little guinea pig and don't worry. The drug isn't supposed to control absences. It's just for total seizures. You can eat the rind, you know? It reminds me of calluses. You want a box? Yuck. Callin'. Hey, is anybody hungry? Yeah, I could eat a horse. Probably loads from home far loads. How the cats can't go. Nothing new. Music to my ears. Six months here and everything's turned around. Not everything. Hello. Kellan's history teacher called this afternoon. I already told him I'd retake the exam. Question, what was the Bill of Rights? Answer, $35.56. It was just a guess. Question, what were Nathan Hale's last words? Answer, UGG? No, that's... I was just paraphrasing. A terrific example you're setting for your brother. I had to fill out about eight million experiment reports for Dr. Tobin last week. How was I supposed to study for a lousy history exam? Don't use your treatment as an excuse. It's true. Just calm down. You have to get a tutor. That's all. After school? I'm not going to school. I'm going to the library. I'm going to the library. I'm going to the library. I'm going to the library. I'm going to the library. I'm going to the library. I'm going to the library. I'm going to the library. I'm going to the library. I'm going to the library. I'm going to the library. I'm going to the library. I'm going to the library. I'm going to the library. Are you okay? Hey, can you hear me? Hello? Are you okay? Yeah. Okay. Did you tell me where Susie was? Tell me, yes. Yeah, I did. I did. I did. I did. I did. I did. I did. I did. I did. I did. I did. I did. I did. I did. I did. I did. I did. Crouch one. I did. Crouch one. Crouch one. I did. I did. I did. I did. It's LA Animation. Well, so that tells me, Susie's So film basically sleep on Jan. Susie? Fitelli? You must be Callan. Miss... Miss Francis said you were... you would... Tutor? The word is tutor, it's not fatal. Sorry I'm late. My locker jammed. Are you always this nervous? Only around people. Well sit down. So how'd you get out of not having to take P.E.? Well I take these private exercise classes. Oh I jog every morning and no one offered to let me. Oh yeah? Where do you jog? We were talking about you. No really I'm interested in where you jog. The track. You just go around and around. Don't you get wound up? You should try it sometime. You look like you use a little muscle tone. Who me? Oh no. I spent five years training for the string bean growers poster child. I'm not about to let that go down the drain. I'm serious. You should come jogging with me. You want to jog with me? Well it's boring jogging alone. I could use the company. Oh I don't know. I mean look I'll check with my astrologer and if it doesn't conflict with my planets and shatter the universe I'll call you tonight. Okay. I'm in the book. Now it's halfway through the park and Marcy's going to go jogging with this guy. So we're scarfing down on his birthday and Marcy's throwing books she can't find this guy's last name. She can't ask Lori because Lori said to question the guy who would like to end her life. So Marcy asks Lisa to ask Lori what this guy's last name is. You're following this? Just barely. So when Lori finds out that Lisa told Marcy she like detonates. Close up. So you know Lori wants to get even with her and guess what she does. What does she does? She's the police retainer. You would think that's funny. Party was great. Shepherd pie smells delicious that. Tasting better. What'd you do today? Nothing much. Started my tutoring today with this girl named Suzy Fitelli. Learned anything? Yeah we worked on the presidents. She told me all this personal stuff to help me tell them apart. Like what kind of personal stuff? Like James Garfield could write Latin with one hand and Greek in the other hand at the same time. That should serve you well on the SATs. And guess what Truman, Cleveland, Andrew Jackson, Johnson, Taylor, Fillmore, Van Buren, Lincoln and Washington have in common. Purple underwear. None of them went to college. Hey don't let it go to your head. You might be able to get by in the presidency without going to college but most jobs require an education. I thought most of them were lawyers. Come on Harvey I was only kidding. Suzy asked me to go jogging with her. Kalin and Suzy. Shut up. What'd you tell her? I told her I'd let her know tonight. Did you ask Dr. Tobin about it? I talked to him this afternoon. He said it would be okay. Does Suzy know you're an epileptic? I haven't had a grand mal seizure in five months dad. I don't see why he has to tell her as long as Dr. Tobin says it's alright. Well the drugs workin' dad. We just have to get used to not worrying anymore. Hello? Suzy? It's Kalin. I was wondering if you still want to go jogging with me tomorrow morning. Sure. Really? I mean you don't have to do this just because you're my tutor. Just be there at seven okay? Okay. Oh Suzy oh Suzy. You want that shrimp bus. Is there any way of telling me you want to go to bed early? Oh not that. Then get out of here. Kalin and Suzy sittin' in a tree. K-I-S-S-I-S-G. Oh Oh. Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah! We'll return after these messages. The Disney Sunday Movie, brought to you by Duncan Hines. More moist, delicious cakes and frostings, brownies, muffins and cookie mixes. Moist, delicious, Duncan Hines. Have you heard? It's deliciously new. Duncan Hines, double temptation for you. Dark chocolate brownie and in the same light. Rich peanut butter, it'll tempt you twice. The smoke-free butter says Duncan Hines. As the peanut butter swirls, it gets divine. It's so moist, it's our best. Mint chocolate brownie and milk chocolate too. Free Duncan Hines brownie temptation for you. Come on and try them. They're new. Hitting home runs is the fun part of my job. Catching is the tough part, the sweaty part. But you won't catch me showering with deodorant soap. I made a break from all that. A clean break with ivory. Look, that's basic natural honest soap. Not like soaps that cover you with smelly perfumes or deodorant. What's that got to do with clean? Ivory's clean is an honest clean. You can smell it, you can feel it. Make a clean break, cause you just can't beat Ivory's honest clean. Even when you got a special date. Daddy! You want to join this sorority? Start washing. This is cold baking grease. I'll be here till I graduate. Not if you're smart. We use Dawn. Look, Dawn scatters grease, flips it away, helps keep it away. Looking good. You forgot to wash this. After all those greasy dishes? Uh huh. This looks as clean as the first. And my hands don't feel greasy. Great! Now you can do the laundry. Dawn takes grease out of your way. Commuting, commuting, doodle you do. Sausage McMuffin and you. They're taking breakfast by the hand. All over the land. Huff town, down town, bogeying along. Sausage McMuffin right in your hand. Sausage is catching the 8-0-5. You're taking fresh, gray day along for the ride. McDonald's Sausage McMuffin with Egg will get you going. Sizzling sausage, melted cheese and a fresh egg. It's a good time for the great day. It's our McDonald's commuting, commuting, doodle you do. Tuesday. Tony remembers the first girl he kissed and he's convinced it was Angela. You've got to admit the stories do sound alike. I, unlike some people I know, remember the name of the first person I kissed and his name wasn't Tony, it was Anthony. Who's the boss? Then, three weeks in America and Bulkies learning to cruise. What I'm going to do is throw a few emergency situations your way, okay? Is that alright? Good. Look out! They're perfect strangers. Tuesday. We now continue with our program. You know something? I'll grant you it was clever, but the mine troop was doing a great job. I'm going to go to the hospital. Has it been that long? Thank goodness, makes me feel like a grown up. Don't worry, darling, as long as you love the grateful dad, you'll never grow up. I'm going to go to the hospital. I'm going to go to the hospital. Harvey, sweetheart. Hey. Hey. You okay? Yeah. Why? We found Harvey in front of the TV asleep. I must have thought I was sleeping first bedtime. We also found the lamp. Oh yeah, that was weird. What happened? I was just reaching to turn it on, and a spider crawled in my hand and I freaked and I was like, what's going on? I was like, what's going on? I was like, what's going on? A spider crawled in my hand and I freaked and you know that you just... That was a play. Sounds like it may be. Hey, maybe you better get to sleep. You got an early morning if you're going jogging with your friend. Goodnight. Goodnight, mom. Sleep tight, dear. Yes. Are you gonna sit all day? I'm waiting for somebody. Honey, we all are. A guy, huh? No. Just one of the dopes I tutor. Well, one of the dopes you tutor could be a guy, you know. Janet, did you ever go out with a guy and spend the whole time wondering what he sees in you? No. Well, it's like this guy. He's more scared than I am. I mean, he's so shy. It's weird. Who is he, a fox? Right now, he's a crud. Oh, they all are. I'm ready to take you to the tutor. You're late. Sorry. Where were we? Look, I said I was sorry. I felt like a jerk waiting around for you this morning. I'm sorry. Is that supposed to make me feel better? I didn't think you'd care. Well, now you know. I didn't mean it. Really. I just overslept. Don't lie to me. I'm not lying to you. Just stop it, okay? What is it? It's... What is it? I'm an epileptic. I had a grand mal seizure last night. You don't have to act like it's the plague. I mean, one in every hundred people has it. It's over two million Americans, and most of them lead normal lives. I can't believe how hard it was for you to tell me that. Kellan, it's nothing to be ashamed of. It's not how most people see it. Let's get out of here. Okay. I used to get them almost every day. And then I got accepted into this experiment, and the seizures stopped almost right away. I thought it was over, you know? For the first time in my life, I could leave my house and not be afraid. Until last night. Do you know what made it happen? Well, during emotional periods in my life, I used to get them more often. But I thought you were happy here. It doesn't have to be a negative emotion. Too much excitement over a few days can be just as bad as too much tension. Well, I can't think of a better way to work out emotions and stuff than jogging. Maybe we can still go. I don't want to have a seizure in front of you. I'm not afraid. Or should I be? Well, most people react like it's contagious or something. Well, I think it's stupid not to do things because you're scared of what other people might think. What does it feel like? Well, I don't know about other people, but for me, every muscle in my body gets slammed by this unbelievable force over and over again until I pass out. Every time, I think I'm going to die. And it's usually about then that stuff's a wallet in my mouth. I take it that's not what you want me to do if you have one. Just move everything out of the way that I might kick and hold my hand so I know someone is there. That's it? And remind me to breathe when it's over. Remind you to breathe? Yeah. I forget. And don't feel sorry for me. Okay, you ready? Yeah. Come on, you'll be fine. I'm fine. Then move it. Come on. Come on. Just breathe. Relax. Keep a good pace. See? Feel good, huh? Yeah. Yeah. Come on. Keep up with me. You know, I'm slowing down for you. Oh, really? Yeah. How am I doing? You're doing great. How did you feel when you woke up this morning? Fine. Why? There's a parexismal discharge on your EEG. You had a grand mal seizure, didn't you? Do your parents know? Do your parents know? Okay. Can you increase his dosage? Sorry. The traffic. Sit down, Pat. What is it? Kellan had a grand mal seizure Tuesday night. What does that mean? He's built up a tolerance to the drug. But it was working so well. It's experimental, Meg. You know that. Unfortunately, we seem to be finding a pattern in our control group. The drug just isn't sustaining its effectiveness over time. There must be some other drug that could work. You've been through the full range of anticonvulsants over the years. There's no drug left to try. What's going to happen to me? The hexatin should limit your grand mal seizures for several months, but its effectiveness will diminish as your tolerance increases. After that? I wish I had a better answer. But eventually, I'm afraid you'll be having grand mal as often as you used to. That's more than one a day. Where's your car? Right down there. So I'll see you guys at home? Okay. Love ya. Dad. I'm glad I caught you. I didn't want to bring this up in front of Kellan before you had a chance to consider, but there is one remaining option. Surgery. There's an extremely rare and experimental procedure. Cerebral comaserotomy. We've already looked into it. No way. You might want to reconsider. They've been doing some good new work in the last few years. Eric, for the last 16 years, we've explored hundreds of drugs, sophisticated tests, surgical approaches, biofeedback, dietary theories. We'd do anything to help Kellan. I just don't want to kill him in the process. I'll tell you what. Why don't I send you some articles about what they've been doing recently? Just... look them over. Okay. And his foci scattered? I can't remove them without extensive tissue damage, especially in the speech areas. Commissarotomy is our only chance. What about his parents? They're really scared, but the poor kid has to suffer for it. Can you imagine daily grandmas at his age? Would have put quite a crimp in my social life, I can tell you. Yeah. Ain't that the truth. See? It wasn't that bad. You did a good jog. So, you have to go back to a special school? Probably, I don't know. You okay? Yeah, fine. What causes epilepsy? Lead poisoning, brain tumors, getting hit on the head, bad brain arteries, lots of things. In my case, he never figured it out. So, you're the new tutor. This is Susie. This is my brother, Harvey. How do you do? He's been talking a lot about you, you know. Shut up, boss. Oh, yeah? What does he say? Don't encourage him. It's bad for his health. If you get my drift. Well, he's never had a girlfriend before. Harvey! Look, just leave us alone, okay? He spends a lot of time in outer Slavovia. Not used to human contact. Why do you call him boss? No big reason. Just a little rock and roll fantasy of his. Rock and roll fantasy? Yeah. When Harvey was a kid, Jiminy Cricket told him wishes could come true if you really tried. So we made a pact with each other. He wishes for me to get well, and I wish for him to be the next Bruce Springsteen. Boss, let's get down to work, okay? Okay. Let me get a pencil. What's wrong? It's a letter from my doctor. What's it say? Dear Thad and Meg, here is the research I promised you last week. I can understand your reservation about cerebral comaserotomy for Kellan. It is a radical idea. However, in my opinion, Kellan is one of those rare patients for whom this surgery is justified. I urge you to read the enclosed articles before rejecting this option. Beethoven MD. What's comaserotomy? I don't know. Comasors are these little bundle of nerves that connect one half of the brain to the other. And otomy is where they take something out, isn't it? No, it's ectomy like tonsillectomy, right? I can't believe my folks didn't tell me about this. Comaserotomy invokes surgically cutting some of the fibers that connect the two cerebral hemispheres. It is also known as split brain surgery. No wonder they didn't tell you. What do you mean? Well, it's so dangerous. So? Kellan, they slice your brain into. If it'll stop my seizure from coming back, I don't care how many pieces they slice my brain into. The Disney Sunday Movie will continue after these messages. I think the one thing that bothers me about canned pasta is the taste of the sauce. Introducing Ragoo Pasta Meals, fresh taste you don't get from a can. It's rich, it's thick, it's good pasta. It's great. The sauce is good, not like canned. Donald, do you like this? Yeah, it's pretty good. And it's really like homemade. Are we allowed to have seconds? New Ragoo Pasta Meals, fresh taste you don't get from a can. It was a really good dinner. It was yummy. I had four plates. tennis song Elves exist. This footage shot with a hidden camera confirms that Keebler elves exist. Operating inside this hollow tree rather than a factory, the elves use elfin magic to make uncommonly good crackers and cookies. Appearing now at your store, soft batch cookies, townhouse crackers, pecan sandies, fudge stripe cookies, and all these other fine Keebler crackers and cookies. Unwilling taste and you'll know what the elves mean by uncommonly good. One of the nicest gifts I ever got was you as a second dad. No excuses, I was wrong. Some of the best signs I ever had were with you. Now One Card Company takes the words right out of your mouth, the feelings right out of your heart. American Greetings introduces In Touch Cards. Get to the heart of it, get in touch. Thank you for last night. Now back to our story. This puts me in an awkward position. I'm sorry about that, but I have had five months of normal living here. Most people take that for granted. If I can just get through a day without a seizure, that's paradise for me. If this split brain surgery can stop those seizures from coming back, I want to know about it. All right. As you know, the brain is divided into two hemispheres. Most seizures start small in one hemisphere or the other. Some spread, some don't. What makes a seizure grand mal is that it spreads across the commissures to invade both sides of the brain. In a split brain operation, we cut most of the connecting nerves to make a sort of fire road to keep the seizures on one side of the brain or the other. Don't weird things happen to you when you cut your brain apart like that? It's amazing. The changes in a patient's mental functions can be almost imperceptible. Well could this operation work for me? We haven't done enough studies to know all the possible side effects. This is a very rare procedure, and once it's done, it can't be undone. Well, I know it's dangerous, but could it work? You should discuss this with your parents. I want a medical opinion. They're not doctors. I think it might work. Then I want it. It's not like we've got six months breathing space. He's already had a convulsion. Kellen had a convulsion? Yes, I'm afraid so. Are we going to move again? No more moving for the time being. I thought we were here for the treatment. We are. And now that we're here, I sort of like it, don't you? Well, not really. I mean, I like it, but it's better. I kind of miss my old home and friends. Well, we'll just have to do the best we can like we always have. Hi, son. What's wrong? Found Dr. Tobin's letter. What? You had no right. What letter? Nothing, Harvey. Why don't you go upstairs and watch TV? You don't want me to watch TV. Don't look at gift toys in the mouth. Kellen, this isn't a drug program where you can pull out of it if something goes wrong. This operation splits your brain in half. I have to live with it, not you. Relax. You want to bring on another seizure? Oh, that's just great. You cut me out of decisions about my life because you're afraid I'm going to light off a seizure. Come on, Kellen. No, you come on. It's not fair. I have tried every drug there is, and I have been ruled out of every other kind of operation. This is the last chance I've got. Kellen, Dr. Tobin isn't the first doctor we talked to about this surgery. Now, it's just too risky. We didn't want to tell you about it because we were afraid to disappoint you again. Stop treating me like I'm a child. Wait a minute. Do you think we want you to have seizures? Dr. Tobin thinks it'll work. Oh, Dr. Tobin thinks it might work. We've always encouraged you to make your own decisions, son. We just... we're not ready for you to take your life in your own hands. But it's my life! The answer's no! End of discussion. This is hopeless. Try copying it upside down. What? According to this book, you're doing a left brain task with the right brain. That's why the drawing's so awful. What are you talking about? You see, the two sides of the brain are like two separate brains all the same. They're the same thing. They're the same thing. You're talking about the left side of the brain. You're talking about the right side of the brain. The two sides of the brain are like two separate brains all together. The left one controls the logical, like one step at a time. While the right one is sort of like the aha, sort of off-the-wall thinking. The left one controls your speech. And the right one controls the visual stuff, like the drawing. Since when are you reading brain books? It interests me. Try it. This is weird. I thought you were going to take me to the movies this Saturday. I'm not going to have time. You've been hanging out with that girl too much. What's it to you? The movie, that's what. What was in that letter? It was a letter from my doctor about some stuff. What stuff? Stuff. You sure are nosy all of a sudden. Look, when Dad orders me to go watch some TV, I know something big is going down. Nothing's going down, boss. It was just a letter. So is the Declaration of Independence, or hasn't your tutor gotten to that yet? Look, I don't want to talk about it, okay? What do you think? I think I need some air. What are you doing here? Hey, I was walking down the street minding my own business. When I see these three quarters flying in the air. So say, hey, I don't see these every day, so I fall. Lo and behold, they fly into your window. Get in here. I mean, who gave parents the right to make kids suffer? I don't know, Congress, the state legislature. Whatever happened to the Bill of Rights? As I recall, you paid it at $35.00 and some odd cent. That was before I needed it. I don't think it was meant to protect you against your parents. Sit down. Maybe I could put on a fake beard and forge their signatures in a consent form. I'm sure. I could write my congressman. You're too young to vote, he'll take their side. How about if I sue him? That's the American way. I'd rather be dead than go back to daily seizures. You mean really sue them? Why not? All I ever wanted to be was normal. Most kids, they want to be rock stars or baseball players and stuff. But I just want to be able to sit at a glass table and not get nervous about it. I mean, jogging with you is more than just a thing to do. It's a lifelong dream, and now they want to take that away from me. No way. Do you think I have a right to decide about my own life? I do, but I'm not a court. I wonder where I can find a lawyer. The Yellow Pages. Do you remember when that lawyer came to school a couple of months ago to put on that mock trial? The lady from the National Civil Rights Organization? What was her name? You're serious, aren't you? In the end, CRO doesn't charge anything. Yeah, but she said they only do civil rights cases. Well, what do you think I am? Aren't I being denied my, whatchamacallit, due process? Aren't I being denied the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? You're crazy. Just you wait. I sympathize with your plight, but even if we could get this into court, I don't think we could win. There are too many reasons for a judge to find against you. There must be some way. I can't take another two years of deadly seizures. Well, there have been parallels to your case. The court would have to appoint a guardian for you at some point along the way. Who? Oh, I don't know. Maybe me. You would do that for me? Only as a last resort. Kellan, I wonder if you have any idea what you're in for. Your parents would be horribly hurt. My parents know I love them. Well, even so, they're bound to be humiliated. Your little brother probably won't understand what's going on. He might hate you for throwing the whole family into turmoil. Your parents may lose friends who sympathize with your side of the case, and if they're not in total agreement with each other, their relationship will suffer a terrible strain. Not to mention the strain of the legal fees. A case like this is torture for everybody. Except maybe the press. You don't understand how horrible my life is going to be without this surgery. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to belittle your situation. You have to consider all your choices before you make a decision. Taking your parents to court should be an absolutely indisputable, unavoidable, possibly irreconcilable final option. What else can I do? They made up their minds. What if you go through all this and you lose? What do you think I'll win? Cases like this usually involve life-threatening situations. If the court rules against the surgery, it's a virtual death sentence for the child. So that's a pretty easy decision to predict. But your case is a judgment call. It could go either way. I'll tell you what. Let me talk to your parents. I'll see if there's something I can work out. I'm disappointed in you. I thought we had more trust in each other than that. If we have so much trust in each other, why didn't you tell me about the surgery? We made a mistake. Okay, I'm sorry. But this is a family matter between the three people in this room. We don't need lawyers to settle our differences. Well, that's easy for you to say. You're the one who calls the shots. That's right. Wait a minute. Now, this isn't getting us anywhere. Well, where would you like to get, Mary Margaret? I'm sorry. Is dinner ready yet? Go on downstairs, honey. It'll be ready in a minute. I don't want to have to wait till I'm 18 and live through two more years of seizures. Is that so hard to understand? What's going on? What's going on is between your brother and us. And I don't want to have to go back to special schools. Do you think I like going to school with a bunch of geeks? Don't call them that. They can't help what they are. Well, that doesn't mean I want to socialize with them all day. Do you know what kind of conversations they have? That's enough of that. We can hire you a private teacher. Terrific. I can go to school all alone. That'll do wonders for my social life. Will somebody please tell me what's going on? Your mother told you to go downstairs. I didn't do anything. I don't want to argue with you, Harvey. Just do as I say, please. We don't like this any more than you do. Then let me have the surgery. We're so afraid you're going to die. We know how much you want this, Kellan. If we thought it would work, we'd let you do it. But there's just too many maybe. Like maybe you're wrong. You have no idea how it feels to have your heart squeezed so hard. You can feel the veins trying to burst through your skin. Listen, I can't feel your pain. But that doesn't mean I haven't suffered right along with you. Now, I know I might have done something wrong while I was pregnant with you. If you feel so guilty, then let me have the surgery. Don't talk to your mother that way. Look, I'm sorry. I love you, but you've got to understand. I'm going to have this operation whether you like it or not. We'll continue after these messages. It's your job to pass out grant funds, you tell me. That's a pretty good deal considering the size of the sculpture. How exactly are they going to do it? The artist makes some sort of a latex mold of the tree. Then casts it in bronze. Labor in materials is about $37,000. It's a cheap grant, twice the price. $37,000 for a bronze tree? Art sure is a mysterious business. City Council loves the bronze tree idea. Still leaves $120,000 in the grant fund. You don't suppose they go for a bust of John Wayne? Robert Dattius Taylor Jr.? Yeah? I have a paper for you from the court. What, are you being sued? I don't know. This is...papostris. What is it? I'm being sued by my 16-year-old son. What? I'm going to kill him! Hey, boss. Boy, they rushed at you. Wouldn't let me in on it, would you? Later. We each got served papers today. I know. What a surprise. I'm sorry. Just because we didn't do what you want doesn't mean we didn't hear you. Kellan, we don't need a court. We're a family. We can work this out between us. How? We always have by sitting down and talking it out. So what happens? We sit down and you explain why your way is the right way. I always listen to you. Sure you do. And you always tell me how you understand my point of view. But your point of view always wins. This is ridiculous. I want you to call that lawyer right now and tell her you made a mistake. No! Kellan! That was not the thing to say. Maybe we're wrong. Meg, we've been all through this. Well, it wouldn't hurt to talk to another neurosurgeon about it, just to be sure. We've already consulted two of the best. What are you afraid of? Only four or five hundred comissarotomies have been performed in the United States. Most of those patients suffer daily multiple seizures as a result of brain damage or some genetic brain condition. Now these sorts of brain problems can overshadow any damage done by comissarotomy, making it very difficult to assess. But would his seizures stop? His grandmas may stop or be reduced, but other types of seizures may increase. You have to understand it's very unusual for a child to suffer the relentless abuse of multiple daily seizures to still develop the intelligence and emotional stability of your son. There simply haven't been enough controlled studies, especially of unusual cases like Kellan's, for anyone to predict how comissarotomy will affect him. But what are the risks? He could have a stroke on the table and suffer irreversible brain damage, loss of mental function such as speech or hand-eye coordination. What you're saying is he could become a vegetable? Yes. You made the fourth page. Doesn't that make you feel proud? It's been a week and a half. How did they find out about it? Are you kidding? Reporters love this kind of thing. What do they do? Read every case that gets filed? Did you read the paper? You're on front page news. Eat your breakfast, Harvey. How'd they find out about it? I wouldn't be surprised if your lawyer called a press conference. Could we talk about something else, please? Is that what this is all about, blackmail? I'll smear your name all over the paper, Dad, unless you give me what I want? Virginia told me I shouldn't talk to you about this. Oh, great. My son's taking the Fifth Amendment on me. I saw a movie where Al Capone did that. Harvey. She also suggested that I should move out for a while, just until things get cleared up. What? What do you care? All we do anymore is argue. This is still your home. Where would you go? I could stay with Virginia and her husband. There's plenty of room. Out of the question. Dad, will you let him talk? I'll get it. Hello? This is Time Magazine. Hi, this is Harvey, his little brother. This is a private matter. Don't call back again, please. So, gotta be man of the year? Listen, if any more reporters call, you are to hang up. Do you understand? Finish your breakfast. Every time I open my mouth, it's Harvey. Go finish your breakfast. Harvey, go watch some TV. Harvey, go stick your head in the toilet. They're just upset, boss. Why do they have to take it out on me? Your bonus is causing all the trouble. They'll ease up, don't worry. No, they won't. They're trying to even make them crazier. Why do you have to go wreck everything? You think I brought the grandmas back on purpose? You didn't have to go sue Mom and Dad. Well, excuse me for wanting to get rid of my seizures. I didn't realize I was ruining your life. I'll never win anyway. How do you know that? Look, Dad always wins, and you can't stop him. You want him to, don't you? You think Dad'll bring order back into your selfish little world. That's not true. You can just walk yourself to school. I've had it with you. Kellan! Kellan! Kellan, wait! Kellan! I'm worried that all this stress is just going to speed up the return of his seizures. What can we do about that? We won't listen to reason. Maybe we can send him back to therapy. We can't force him into therapy. He chose to quit. He's got to choose to go back. Proponents from both sides of the issue were out in force. Also on the local front, a 16-year-old boy filed suit against his parents today in a case poised to set legal history. I can't stand much more of this. Wake up, Dad! We're going to be late for school! Well, sure, we're all going to be late. Because I've got to spend time talking on the phone to my lawyer. It's okay for me to live with daily seizures, but it's not okay for your life to get a little ruffled. Kellan! I'm sick and tired of fighting about this all the time! Dad, maybe it would be better if Kellan moved out for just a few days. No. It's better than all of us being at each other's throats. I'm going anyway. Now, you get in this car! Get in! I'm moving out. Well, you're not. Yes, I am. Uh-uh. And I can get a court order if I have to. Harvey, get in the car. Hi there. You must be Kellan? Yes. My name's Richard. Welcome. Glad you found us. Nice place. Thanks. Oh, Suzy called. I invited her up to dinner. Because this is a juvenile proceeding, we can have the press excluded, but frankly, I was hoping the press would be able to get in on the case. Okay. You okay? Don't stay up too late. Okay. I was thinking about Harvey. What about him? I don't know. I mean, he's caught up in all of this, and no one's thinking about him. You have enough to worry about without worrying about Harvey. In the Sampson case the court ordered the parents to allow cosmetic surgery to proceed for a young boy whose face was so disfigured that he could not lead a normal life. Clearly not a life threatening situation. Indeed disfigurement is trivial compared to the torture that my client will suffer if this court does not clear the way for his surgery. No dungeon can compare to Kellyn's claustrophobic terror of grand mal seizure. A primal spasm beside which our darkest nightmares pale. Setting aside legal semantics for just a moment. What this case boils down to is the question of who has the right to make medical decisions on behalf of this 16 year old boy. A minor child cannot legally consent to medical treatment unless it is a specifically defined special circumstances which this case clearly is not. This is not just the law of the state. It's the law of nature. It's the mother dove who must decide when her chick is ready to leave the nest. And if the fledgling climbs out on his own before he's ready to fly he will fall to his death. Doctor you've testified that comissarotomy poses unique surgical risks. But isn't it also true that some 1.3% of all persons with epilepsy die every year from injuries sustained during seizures. I question your statistics. A specific percentage is almost impossible to pinpoint. And isn't it also true doctor that less than 1% of all comissarotomy patients die as a result of surgery. Again your statistical methodology. Alright doctor let's skip the numerical tap dance. Generally speaking isn't it true that comissarotomy is less life threatening than uncontrolled grand mal epilepsy. Yes. No further questions. Mr. Goodman. Now you've already testified about the dangers of the comissarotomy process doctor. What about the after effects? There have been reports of memory loss, disorientation, difficulty with mathematical tasks. One patient reported disconnection between his hands. Could you be a little more explicit? He reported trying to get dressed in the morning and having one hand pull up his pants while the other tried to pull them down. Now would you call this normal behavior doctor? It's rare. Even for comissarotomy patients. There you go. Thank you. What do you want to do about dinner? I don't know. I hadn't planned anything. I don't want to go to hung far lows again. The more they stare at me I feel like some kind of a criminal. Hi. Hey. Hi. Do you want to see my picture? Sure honey. It's very nice Harvey. Dad? That's very nice. Dad? Mm-hmm. Can I borrow your such a paper album? No, that's not such a good idea. Why not? Because you scratched the last album you borrowed. I'm sorry. Now they're talking about transferring me out of grants into tax litigation? But you hated all that. Tell me about it. Why do they want to move you? Too much publicity from the case. Something about corporate image. It's ridiculous. Oh my God. What's going on? Harvey. Why? Huh? Talk to me. Why should I? You don't talk to me. What's that supposed to mean? You don't talk to me. I'm not talking to you. I'm talking to you. I'm talking to you. I'm talking to you. I'm talking to you. I'm talking to you. You're not talking to me. Why should I? You don't talk to me. What's that supposed to mean? How come the newspaper knew about killing before I did? You're nine years old. That's my brother. How old do you have to be to get in this family? If you felt left out, you should have said something. A lot of good it would do me. You only care about killing. Oh, baby. How about if you come to court with us tomorrow? I know it hasn't been easy for you. Having to leave all your friends, give up your big room, get used to a whole new school, all because of Kellan's treatment. It's not that bad. We love you so much. Don't you know that? You know, this really is pretty good. It got an A on that. Yeah? I don't know if it's that good. Oh! Dr. Tobin, would you please tell the court why you so strongly recommend comissarotomy for Kellan Taylor? Kellan has had a six-month remission from grand mal seizures. As a doctor, I've got to consider the effects of a resumption of daily convulsions on his mental and emotional stability. The stress could dramatically increase the frequency of his seizures, and this in turn further increases his physical danger. Grand mal seizures can, after all, result in serious injury or even death. You must understand that from a medical standpoint, Kellan Taylor is a classic comissarotomy candidate, and as such, he's extremely rare. There's no question in my mind that Kellan will opt for this surgery in two years if this court does not let him have it now. If there were no legal issues involved, my medical opinion would be that two additional years of seizures will unnecessarily jeopardize Kellan. No further questions. Mr. Goodman? Dr. Tobin, have you ever performed a cerebral comissarotomy? No, but I've assisted in four of them. But you've never performed one? No. Doesn't that concern you, doctor? It's a fairly straightforward... Just answer the question, yes or no, doctor? No. Have you ever actively participated in a controlled follow-up study of comissarotomy patients? No, as I said, I've assisted. These weren't my patients. Ever examined a recovered comissarotomy patient? Yes, I have. Just this morning. This morning? Yes. Was this by any chance an opportunity provided by the attorney for the petitioner? Yes, it was. And would you say that this patient was perfectly normal, unharmed in every mental capacity? You tell me. He's sitting in his courtroom. Your Honor, may we recess? Well, it is almost lunchtime. Court will recess till two o'clock. Are you scared? A little. I mean, it's really weird to think that someone's going to sew into my skull and start slicing around in it. You know, even if you win, there's no law that says you have to have the surgery. My parents would kill me. That's hardly reason to let some bozo slice your brain into. It's really strange. I mean, I'm not going to be able to do that. I'm not going to be able to do that. It's really scary, I admit. But that doesn't matter if you think about it. It's all right. Just stand back. He'll be okay. Move the table, please. Here, take my billfold. Put it in his mouth. No, you must never put anything in the mouth. Somebody please move the table. Helen. All right. I'm here, Helen. Just remember to breathe. I'm right here. I'm right here. It's okay, Helen. I'm right here. Just remember to breathe. You're going to be okay. Everything's fine. Just breathe deeply. Breathe deeply. In. I'm right here with you. I'm right here. That's it. Breathe. Everything's going to be okay, Helen. The Disney Sunday Movie will continue after these messages. Hey, good lookin'. What you got cookin'? How's about cookin' somethin' up with cheese? What are you doing up? Why can't Kellan have the operation so he can come home? It's a very serious operation, sweetheart. We're worried for Kellan. Could Kellan die? Come here. Ah. I had it, boy. It's gonna be okay. You're still here. I wanted to be here when you woke up. You surprised? You never know how someone's gonna react to a seizure. Well, you've been asleep for like eight hours. I feel like I've been run over by a truck. You hungry? A little. Now, let me go downstairs and fix you something neat, okay? I dreamed that you took me bowling. Do we have a good time? Yeah. Until my dad showed up... and ate my bowling ball. I didn't know you liked to bowl. I don't know that I do. I've never tried it. Well, sure, a lot of things you've never tried. It's only human. Yeah. But not everybody has an excuse to get away with it like you do. You call epilepsy an excuse? There's no reason not to go bowling. I could have a seizure. Well, that's what you used to say about jogging. Your doctor said it was okay. No, it was you who made it okay, not my doctor. Maybe I do worry too much. It's only human. And in your everyday life, do you notice a difference between the way you function today and the way you functioned before your chameleonatomy? I have some trouble connecting names with faces since the surgery, but other than that, I don't notice much difference. Except, of course, my grand mal seizures have stopped. Entirely? Yes, ma'am. I still have some petites, but I've been able to control them pretty well with drugs. Eli, we've heard evidence that the two halves of your brain have been almost completely separated. Are you saying you notice no major difference in your mental functioning? Yes, ma'am. You know, Mom and Dad, really freaked when you had your seizure. I know. Mom called me yesterday morning. And this morning, when the doctor talked about it, how many people died from epilepsy, I got scared. Oh, come on. I'm not gonna die. How do you know? Because my history grade is still in the toilet. Dad would kill me if I died. You know, we really miss you. I miss you too, boss. And I'm sorry about some of the things I said. Well, I said some stuff too. Let's just forget about it, okay? Oh, you're so... You okay? Yeah. Come on, Hart. Your Honor, I'd like to call Dr. Leonard Faraday, Eli's neurosurgeon, to the stand. Proceed. Eli, can you see anything? No. Would you hold out your hands, please? I'm placing an object in your left hand. Can you tell me what you're holding? I don't know. Doctor, in lay terms, could you give us the medical explanation for what we've just seen? Well, Eli's left hand is connected to the right side of his brain, but he has almost no language on that side, so he can't name the object that he holds. Thank you, Doctor. Eli, again with your left hand, would you please feel the objects in front of you and tell me which one goes with the object you've been holding? Can you tell me what you're holding now? I don't know. Would you please switch hands? Now what are you holding? Matches. Thank you, Eli. You can take your blindfold off now. I'm going to go get the doctor. I'll be right back. I'm going to go get the doctor. I'm going to go get the doctor. I'm going to go get the doctor. Thank you, Eli. You can take your blindfold off now. Doctor. With the object in his right hand, he was able to get the message to the left side of his brain and find the word for them. Of course, when the blindfold comes off, his sense of sight becomes a communications link between the two halves of his brain, and the disconnection symptoms disappear. So the split brain syndrome we've seen here only occurs under controlled situations, is that correct? Yes. In his everyday life, Eli has very little awareness of the fact that his brain is split. Thank you, doctor. I have just one further question for Mr. Rhodes. Do you ever regret having had this surgery? Your Honor, with all due respect. No, no, Mr. Goodman. I'll hear it. I wasn't like most epileptics, who can lead pretty normal lives, except they can't drive. I couldn't do anything normal. My seizures would hit me a couple times a day, at least. You people can't understand what that's like, except for Kellen. This operation gave me a life. I don't have any regrets, not even a second thought. Thank you, Eli. I have no further questions, Your Honor. Eli! Eli! You got a minute? Sure. Hi. Hi. Oh, honey, we didn't have that much time this morning. I just wanted to ask you, what's it like? What do you mean, the surgery? Yeah, what's it like waking up with a split brain? Well, the first couple of days, I couldn't talk, and the whole outside of my body wouldn't move. I acted pretty infantile. Is that normal? I mean, considering. Yeah, that's disconnection. It didn't take me very long to get over it, though. What was it like after everything was healed? You're not going to feel half as different as anybody else is going to treat you. What do you mean? It's incredible how many people treat you like you've had an IQ transplant or something. Why would anybody think the operation makes you any smarter? Lots of people think seizures make you stupid. And you know all those people that keep things from you because they're afraid of upsetting you and setting you up into a seizure? Well, pretty soon they get to be your best friends, and you can't get them shut up. It is kind of scary going under the knife, though. But it's the best thing that ever happened to me, Kellen. Don't be afraid. We'll continue after these messages. Announcing the Ace Note Track SnapLock Heavy Load Easy Buy Save Cash Sale. The what? Well, you don't think I mean it? Well, if you do, you need glasses. That's ridiculous. When I met you, my first thought was, you look too good to want to hang out with a geek like me. How could you think that? What would a beautiful, intelligent, normal girl want with a guy who flops around in public? Hello? Why are you crying? You can be really stupid sometimes. What's wrong? Nothing. I embarrassed you again, didn't I? No. No, it was great. I mean, it was wonderful. I just have never kissed a girl before. Well, it's easy. Just don't forget to breathe. I'm willing to practice all you want. You know, when you had the seizure in the restaurant, I sat there holding your hand, asking myself if this is something I wanted to do on a regular basis. And I decided that it was better than thinking of you going through it alone. This is the decision of the court. The court is always reluctant to intercede between parents and child, especially when there's been no apparent discord in the family except for this particular issue before us. These parents' rights as the child's guardians cannot be lightly overruled. Kellan Taylor's parents have provided for their son a good home, an excellent medical treatment, but they have exhausted every viable medical alternative to comissarotomy. If the court were to find against the petition, to wit against the surgery, then the state would in effect be subjecting Kellan to two additional years of considerable risk from further seizures. This is not the intent of the law. Furthermore, according to competent medical testimonies, Kellan has made a reasonable choice, weighing the consequences and demonstrating a maturity beyond his years. The court is impressed, and therefore directs our Thaddeus and Margaret Taylor to consent to the operation. They had a very strong medical case. I still can't believe she overruled your parental rights on that basis alone. This is a bad judgment. I promise you this, it'll never stand up on appeal. We're not going to appeal. I'm hungry. I'm hungry. I'm hungry. I'm hungry. I'm hungry. I'm hungry. I'm hungry. I'm hungry. Come on, boss. Only Kelley gets to call me that. Well, what'd you want me to call you? Mr. Taylor. Okay, Mr. Taylor. Let's go eat. Retractors in place. It's going to be okay. I know. I only wish the operation was over. You can make a wish come true if you really believe. Kelley tell you that? Too many crickets. Okay. You can call me boss if you want to. Thanks. I'll need a craniotome next. We need some ready? Yes, sir. Okay. Let's separate the hemispheres. Just retract against the right one. Okay. Let's not get near a speech center. They say this is the easiest way to change a politician's mind. Easy does it. Okay. There it is. The corpus callosum. The corpus callosum. Self-rotating retractors. Then the scope. Well, there go 150 million nerves. How much longer? Maybe another 45. Do you have a problem, Martha? I'm fine. Mr. and Mrs. Taylor, Dr. Tobin is just closing. It took us nearly five hours, but as far as we know, everything went according to plan. As far as you know. Did it work? Recognition is one of the first signs of recovery, but don't be disappointed if he doesn't know you right away. He'll probably be disoriented for a while. Come on. Let's go take a look at it. It's all right. Come on. Hi, honey. The two halves of his brain have to get used to a new way of relating. Can you hear me? It's dead. Come on, son, give us a sign. Hi, Kellen. Do you know who I am? I'm here too, kiddo. We're with you all the way. Come on, Kellen. Just a little sign. Did you know we're here? I'm here too, tough guy. Just don't forget to breathe. I'm here too. I'm here too. I'm here too. All right. We'll come back after these messages. I'm here too. I'm here too. I'm here too. I'm here too. I'm here too. I'm here too. I'm here too. I'm here too. I'm here too. I'm here too. I'm here too. I'm here too. I'm here too. I'm here too. I'm here too. I'm here too. I'm here too. I'm here too. I'm here too. I'm here too. I'm here too. I'm here too. I'm here too. I'm here too. The great wall of China where they practice in a snowstorm. We feel it's especially fitting that they are performing today because it is the energy and dynamism of young people and their belief in the future that best reflect Martin Luther King's dream. A dream in which there's room for everyone. And now, up with people. And now, up with people. Hey, somebody turning up. Yeah, something in the sound is changing. Hey, somebody tuning in. We're picking up a brand new station. Busting through the time zone. Shifting through the gears. The sound of tomorrow springing in our ears. Hey, yeah. It's the beat, it's the beat, it's the beat, the beat of the future. Calling like a heartbeat, the beat of the future. Rolling like a rhythm, ringing like a rhyme. Ripping along at the speed of time. Rocking me down to my beat, the beat of the future. Out in the country, down in the street. Everybody's in the band. You can hear it happen like thunder and lightning. The beat is in our hands. The beat, beat, beat of the future. Hey, yeah, yeah. Rolling like a rhythm, ringing like a rhyme. Ripping along at the speed of time. Rocking me down to my beat, the beat of the future. Oh, yeah. The beat of the future is all around us. It's the players on the field, the kid in the stands, dreaming of being out there himself someday. It's a feeling that's hard to describe, and when you can't say it with words, you can always say it with your feet. Hey, wanna be in the country, talking with my feet. Wanna be in the country, talking with my feet. I've got something I wanna say, but the words are getting in the way. Ain't gonna worry, cause I know everything's okay. Wanna be talking, talking with my feet. I've got a tingle down in my shoes, a crazy itch that I just can't lose. My soul's a-singing as I'm strutting down the street. I'm talking with my feet. Wanna be talking, talking with my feet. I'm talking with my feet. Wanna be talking. And when I hit the floor, well, I'm a talking fool, oh, yeah. Everything is too cool, too cool. And if you catch my drift, now let it rip, cause the feeling can't be beat. Well, I'm talking, I'm talking with my feet. I'm talking, I'm talking with my feet. I'm talking with my feet. I'm talking with my feet. Wanna be talking. Born in the USA, born in the USA. The Super Bowl was born in the USA in the 60s, and here it is 20 years later being seen around the world. It was on the wave of the future then, it's still moving in that groove today, just like the music of the 80s. Born in the USA, born in the USA, yeah. That's the power of love. Don't need money, don't take fame. Don't need no credit card to ride this train. Seldom is sudden and it's cruel sometimes. It might just save your life. That's the power of love. I just called to say I love you. I just called to say how much I care. I just called to say I love you. And I'll mean it from the bottom of my heart. Everybody cut loose, cut loose. Kick off my Sunday shoes. Please, Louise, hold me up on my knees. Jack, get back, don't long before we crack. Blues, you're blues. Everybody cut loose, cut loose. Kick off my Sunday shoes. Please, Louise, hold me up on my knees. Jack, get back, don't long before we crack. Blues, you're blues. Everybody cut, everybody cut. Get up, get up, get up on your feet. All right now, I want everybody to get up out of their seats. Get up on your feet and jam. Riding on a skateboard, strolling in the park, yeah. Kicking at a football, making it look like a work of art, yeah. Jamming on the song, jamming on the job. On the job. You can jam while you job. Jamming on computers, I'm driving a cab. In Frankenstein with jamming, in the lab. When you see it, you know. Somehow you know. Better start the show and it can jam, jam, jam, jam, jam. Everybody's doing it, doing it, doing it, jamming. Oh, yeah, jam, jam. Everybody's doing it, doing it, doing it, jamming. Jamming. Jamming, yeah. Kicking back on the go, people everywhere, don't you know. You're jamming. Jamming. All right. Oh, yeah. When you see it, you know. Somehow you know. Better start the show and you can jam, jam, jam, jam, jam. Everybody's doing it, doing it, doing it, jamming. All right. Everybody's doing it, doing it, doing it, jamming. Jamming. Jamming. Everybody's doing it, doing it, jamming. I said jamming. Everybody's doing it, doing it, doing it, jamming. Jamming. Kicking back on the go, people everywhere, don't you know. You're jamming. Everybody's doing it, doing it, doing it, jamming. Jamming. As our small planet travels through the universe and those of us who live here and try to imagine the future, we share Dr. King's dream that we'll be there someday in a world where there's room for every nation, every race, every creed. We live close together in worlds apart. We'll be plenty of room inside our hearts. We share the sky, we share the sun. And we share the world with everyone. Sometimes, sometimes time has come and there'll be room for everyone. A place to walk and a place to run. Got to be a place to run for everyone. Got to be a place to run for everyone. Sometimes, sometimes time has come and there'll be room for everyone. A place to walk and a place to run. Got to be a place to run for everyone. Everybody's gone. Sometimes, sometimes time has come and there'll be room for everyone. A place to walk and a place to run. Got to be a place to run for everyone. Sometimes, sometimes time has come and there'll be room for everyone. A place to walk and a place to run. Got to be a place to run for everyone. There's a place they call tomorrow, somewhere in the regions of our minds. To find the road together ain't easy, there's so many different sides. But we've got our hopes and we've got our memories. And I'm feeling that tomorrow will be made of these. We'll be there, we'll be singing one more song. We'll be there, even though the road is long. We'll be there, the feeling's growing stronger. When tomorrow comes, together we'll be there. We'll be there. And a fitting tribute to the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Hundreds of people have worked thousands of hours to bring you this entertainment, and our special thanks go to Lynn Morris and Steve Rokowski from Up With People and Jim Stig of the NFL. The halftime show, you can see the fans themselves involved in each section, they wave different colored banners, was brought to you by GTE, the telecommunications consultant to Super Bowl XX. We'll be back with the second half after these messages from your local station. The legend of the incredible man who followed a dream and became Russia's greatest hero. Peter the Great next Sunday. The magic of gold. The new California Gold Rush from the lottery. Find another and your instant prize could double, up to $50,000. And there's something even bigger, the multi-million dollar growing grand prize, the California lottery. It's richer than ever. Fat kids have a lot to lose. 5 p.m. on 4, Wednesday. 23 to 3 is the score at halftime, but it should be 20 to 3. The last play of that first half has involved some controversy, Merlin Olson. It certainly has. The officials have explained to us that the Bears snapped the ball before it was ready to play. And in the process of doing that, deliberately tried to extend time or extend the play. Now when it happens, the rule book is very specific. The officials must count 10 seconds off the clock. There's only 3 seconds at the time. 3 or 4 seconds to go at that time, that means the half was over. But the error was made. The NFL says that when that happens, even though they're wrong and they have admitted that they were wrong, that they will not take the points off the clock. They're off the scoreboard. So we have a most unusual call. Let's go back and look at that last play. Now again, because the ball was snapped before it was technically ready for play, here it is. No one is lined up properly on that play. McMahon just trying to do his thing. This is the play preceding them. Okay, we'll watch it. Then keep this, keep it running if we can. It's the next play where they're trying to get up and get things going here. This is the one. They end up... Well, if we can. It's a whole new play. But Keith Van Horn, as you'll recall, came in to hit Marion, who was trying to hold McMahon down. There was a lot of confusion. And the illegal procedure was called against the Chicago Bears. What they're saying is they rushed in, they snapped the ball, it was not ready for play, not prepared. So they should have counted the time off the clock. In that situation, they were dead wrong. So the Chicago Bears, as if they needed an extra three, get 23-3, although the officials admit the error. Now let's go back here as the play involved with the illegal procedure. See, McMahon... We're just going to run it through to where he lines up. Look, he's saying, quick, get up to the line, get up to the line. The ball is not prepared for play here is what they're saying. You notice the officials are still standing on the line. And that's what the penalty was for. They had to wait until it was prepared for play. It simply was not done. Now the officials have admitted they blew it, but they can't go back and take the points off the board. Well, that's kind of a sad situation for them. I know they feel worst of all. But the Bears will take the three. They lead 23-3. We'll examine that incredible Chicago Bear defense when we return to the Superdome. The Bears leading by 20 at the half. America loves its sports. America. NBC style. America loves its sports. America. Across the land a tradition stands of sports and NBC. America loves its sports. America. NBC style. America loves its sports. America. NBC style. America loves its sports. America. NBC style. The K to this first half with the score tied 3-all was number 95 Richard Dent. He forced two fumbles that led to 10 points and it was the Bears galloping from that point on. The first fumble he took from Craig James. He literally stole the football. Coming quickly from the outside. Well, at this one I take it back. The first one was by Eason. Coming from the back side. Watch him reach inside and pop that football. The football was loose instantly. Here's the second one. He comes in and takes the football out of James' hands. Again, aggressively stripping after that football. Dent from Tennessee State on his way to the Pro Bowl. He said at one time he didn't know whether he'd play in the Super Bowl. He's not signed his contract this year. He's been unhappy before the Bears. Bears are glad he's here. You better believe it. Those were back to back offensive plays for New England. Back to back fumbles forced by Richard Dent. Ten points for the Bears and they have parlayed that into this lead at halftime. 23 to 3. We'll be back in just a moment. Once there were two Bears, a big Bear... I'll have a Coca-Cola Classic. ...and an even bigger Bear. Give me a Case Coke. This Bear loves the big, bold taste of Coca-Cola Classic, the original. And this Bear loves the light, smooth taste of Coke. Because it goes down real easy. Ah! How about another? Yeah, another Case. Another Case. You gotta keep a lot of Coke in the refrigerator. Coke and Coca-Cola Classic. Both teams are back on the field. The New England Patriots will get the football first here in the second half. Steve Drogen apparently will be the quarterback. Tony Easton starting and he was shut out. Let's go to the statistics and the miseries of the Patriots reflecting in those minus hash marks. Even in the two earlier games against the Giants and the Rams, who must be feeling a little bit better after watching this game, the stats were not as negative at the half. Nine first downs is the fewest anyone has had in a Super Bowl game and the Patriots picked up only one in the entire half. What great frustration. All of the plans, all of the expectations of this New England Patriot team. They really felt that they were going to be able to establish themselves on the line of scrimmage. A couple of things to think back on. Raymond Barry's decision to come out throwing the football. They got here basically because they were able to run and establish themselves on the ground. They had a perfect opportunity to get that first touchdown on the board. They opted to throw the football and Stanley Morgan came within a fraction of catching a ball that would have given them the touchdown. They can look back. That's history now. Of course, there were other opportunities and a play that we looked at with a negative view, in particular, that clip that could have moved the Chicago Bears out of what turned out to be a touchdown. Bob Gracie, as you look at it with your quarterback's eye and you're glad you're up in the booth. I know that. None of this is the Patriot quarterback's. What is it that is so difficult for that New England offense? Well, Merlin mentioned it, Dick, for New England to have a chance, they have to control the line of scrimmage. They are not doing that. They're giving that to the Bears. The Bears are controlling the line of scrimmage. So where New England has to be tough is outside here on the outside where they get one on one with a wide receiver and the defensive backs. Now, these defensive backs need to be running some slants and some quick patterns, but the Bears are controlling the line of scrimmage and New England needs to get something done outside with a quicker pass. In the meantime, the Bears benefit from the extra three points. Let's hope that that isn't a factor in the final score. You watch there another play that illustrates the the clock that the Bears put on you. They simply don't give you the time and they got to be quick passes. Bob, I'll tell you that. Well, that's the way if you think back, the only loss that that the Bears had was at Miami against Marino. A lot of quick stuff. The quarterback wasn't protected all the time, but he got rid of the ball quickly enough. We start the second half. Butler drills it deep to Stefan Starring. A yard into his own end zone brings it out. Starring to the 20 and to the 22 yard line and a good hit by Brian Cabral, number 54. Twenty four yard return and the Patriots. Let's see what they have devised for this second half. Steve Grogan, the veteran of 11 years out of Kansas State, the quarterback. Well, I don't know if you've got enough band aids to put on the game plan to get you back to where you work after this one. But believe me, one thing you know about Grogan and one thing you've got to know about people like Hogg Hannah and Holloway and Brock, they're not quitters. This New England team has fought through some tough times during the year. This is maybe the toughest they've looked at all year. The long shots, the going into the playoffs and three upset wins. The quickie is to Morgan and he's ripped out of bounds at the 30 yard line. Reggie Phillips for the injured Leslie Frazier with a tackle after an eight yard game. There's exactly what you talked about, Bob. The quick pop to the outside and New England comes up with a with a pop here. Jesse Craig James, the leading rusher for the Patriots. And that's it. Three yards is the long game. In fact, Morgan's eight yard reception is the longest of the entire game for New England. They haven't missed much if you're a New England offensive fan. And the second first down of the game is Tony Collins up the middle. Wilbur Marshall made the hit. The Patriots and the quick out of eight yards and three yards on the run by Collins have the first down out at their 33 yard line. There are the fewest first downs. Minnesota and Super Bowl nine. And also the Dolphins surprisingly in the Super Bowl 17 against the Redskins had only nine percent. Tastes the bite of that defensive rush. Steve McMichael 76 was their first and 95 Richard Dent to polish him off. McMichael, who after the football season will go back to his hobby rattlesnake hunting in Texas. Dent all the way on the outside here and what he's going to do is come completely around from the backside using his great speed to get into that quarterback. They're trying to get Holloway out to block him, but they can't do it. Watch him. Dent is just too fast. He comes in from the back side to polish off Grogan. Fourth sack for the Bear defense. They had six. Looks as if the Patriots pulled off the line of scrimmage. McMichael started but didn't make contact. The onus is on the offensive line. Look, you guys are giving us enough problems when you come after we snap the ball. Come on, let us get the ball snapped anyway. Ball start number six against New England. Richard Dent from high school football in Atlanta, Georgia. Look at the speed of this man. Six five and 263 pounds. Does he close? Almost runs like a linebacker defensive back. Got to be frustrating for Grogan. We mentioned that severe leg injury and the fact that he has just taken a few snaps, but that that didn't frighten Barry so much. He said the last time we put him in hadn't taken any snaps with the offense. He came in instantly through for over 300 yards and led us to six victories in a row. So they have confidence in him. He's hit a pass here in the first play of the second half, but now he's facing long yardage situation. The Bears defense paid for a kind of yardage. Second and 20. They come a jailbreak. Wilson and Hampton this time. If it were a fight, they'd have to stop it. The Bears second only the Giants and most sacks for the year. New England in the top half of the NFL. Watch the number of bodies and bare uniforms that are coming in. Three of them clean and Grogan had just barely had time to set up back there. Wilson had stunted to the inside Hampton from the outside. Boy, they're putting a squeeze on. And when you're ahead like this, you just go after the quarterback. That's the name of the game. Third and thirty three. And the fade works to starring who's wrestled out of bounds at the 34 yard line. He got 24 of it, but that'll leave them short of the first down. That's the longest play of the game for New England. Dave Doersen made the hit. Rich Camarillo comes in to punt for the Patriots. So there's how Grogan buys time. He has to lob the ball, rainbow it up there and hope that eventually it'll need a receiver fading downfield. Or to go stands at his twenty three. It was just bad enough to get a tremendous role and Chicago will start inside the five on a 62 yard Camarillo punt. This is a promise from the people of Holiday Inn. I promise. And by the Coca-Cola Company and your local bottler of Coke and Coca-Cola Classic. Benefiting from about a 25-yard roll, Rich Camarillo set a Super Bowl record. 62-yard punt breaking Gerald Wilson of the Chiefs' 61-yard or he'll tell his kids a beautiful spiral. All the way on the floor. McMahon with good play action going for the bomb from his own end zone to Galt. They won't catch him except by the shirt tail. Marion saved a touchdown. So the Bears unloading with that great defense. They're showing all the weaponry and McMahon from his own end zone hits Galt for 59 yards. How many times can you see a quarterback freeze a defense with a fake? That's what McMahon was able to do. And then Galt just uses his speed. It's all Marion can muster to get a handful of jersey. But it was enough to pull Willie Galt down. And this Bear defense has done what really very few teams have been able to do during the year against the Patriot defense. Repeatedly strike for the big game. And Galt who has had his critics in Chicago, he's had some drops during the course of the year. He's been perfect at 60 yards on that one. He has 130 yards for the game. Emory Morehead gets to the act. And the tight end has another first down at the 22-yard line. Let's go back to the fake by McMahon and Bob Greci. Here's Galt over here, Dick. He's just going to release inside and go across. The play action fake is going to hold the defensive end. Marion in the middle of the field is not faked out at all. But the two corner, the corner and the strong safety to the right of your screen right there were both beaten. And that's why the play worked. When you consider you're working against a man who runs about a nine to a hundred. That was a pretty good play by Marion just to get the shirt to it. It makes you want to line up awfully deep in that safety position. I'll tell you that. Thanks to Galt McMahon's yardage up to 222. Walter Payton to the 20-yard line. And they throw those away just a couple of yards. The danger now for the Patriot defense is that they're getting desperate. They're trying to make the big play. And very often when you're trying to make the big play, you lose the integrity of the defense. There are going to be some holes in there. That's the time that you see a Walter Payton pop a long one. There's Rod Rustin. Oh, what a horrible day for him. His defense has been so consistent. In fact, that's been the mark of his defense. They've been on the field the whole day. Yes, they have. Yes, they have. Drawing a crowd, picks up five more. Adams and Tippett and Varus and Nelson all in on the stop. Steve Nelson, the inside man, linebacker, does for this defense what Singletary does for the Chicago defense. He calls all the signals, calls the adjustments. Heading out to the Pro Bowl. He's had another fine year and is playing hurt. You see the tape on that arm. He's got that shoulder strapped down from an injury he suffered in Miami. You'd have to knock him out and drag him off the field, even in a losing game like this. Brinklin trying to at least force a Butler Field goal. Sui. He's trying to be close. In that last effort, it appears they've marked it inside the 12, which would be a first down. It is. Steve Fuller, the backup quarterback, a Rhodes Scholar candidate when he was at Clemson. The Bears have three of those, Brian Baschnegl on the injured list. Another, Stefan Humphries at Michigan, a great student, was a Rhodes candidate. First down at the 12. Let's listen. So he inside the 10. Julius Adams dragging him down. Adams, who played his college ball at Texas Southern, joined the Patriots in 1971. This is not the way that Julius had planned this season. I don't know that he ever dreamed of being in this game except idly because of the way the Patriots' seasons of the past had gone. And now to get here. To have this dream apparently shattered. Frustrating for that man. 23-3, the Bears lead it and are growling for more. Incomplete. Intended for Dennis McKinnon. Ronnie Lepet on the coverage. Well, it goes a long time for those in Chicago. 1963. And Mike Ditka was on that George Hallis coach team that beat the New York Giants in the cold at Wrigley Field 14-10. With all those great teams and the fantastic fans that have supported them in all sports, they come ever so close. But it's been nothing but frustration for 22 years for the fans of Chicagoland. Ditka is ever closer to changing that. And will there be a celebration? Wide open, Ken Margerum stopped just short of a touchdown by Roland James. But that is another bare first down, first and goal inside the one. McMahon is arguing that Margerum had that ball over the goal line. Guess who's coming in? Let's see where he is when he catches that football. He's well outside. He'll turn back. Well, hard to see Roland James doing a good job of stripping him. Here's a better angle of it. It appeared that the ball did not cross the plane of James. Twisting him down. Perry is in the refrigerator. He's a lone setback now. And it's all disguised. McMahon rolls in. A somersault six and the Bears lead 29-3. Well, just like those hot players in Las Vegas, the Bears keep rolling those sevens all day long. And McMahon and his offensive linemen have been celebrating with those headbutts. There may be a couple of headaches in that group tonight. I hope that doesn't catch on around the country, especially in the broadcast booth. Well, he marches to his own drummer. Dick says he's young. He'll draw out of some of that stuff. You don't want him to forget how to do some of those things, Dick. Butler adds the extra point. That caps a 96-yard drive and nine plays for the Bears. They've done it from short range. No, they've done it the full length of the field. Quarterback sneak. Nick, as you told us earlier, put it back into the book for him. There's McMahon, the spike, and the headbutt. Tom Sayre and Keith Benorn, a guard and a tackle in the act. We'll clear that up when we return. There's a lot of paperwork here. There's always paperwork when you buy a house. The first one says that you lose the house if you don't make your payments. You probably don't want to think about that, but you do have to sign it. The next says the property's insured for the amount of the note, and you sign that in the lower left corner. This pretty much says that nobody's got a gun to your head, that you're entering this agreement freely. Next says the house is free of termites. The last one says the house will be your primary residence and that you won't be relying on rental income to make the payments. I hope you bought your checkbook. This is the fun part. I say that all the time, though most people don't think so. You begin with raw steel. Shape it with fire, muscle, and sweat. Polish it to raise a sharp perfection. We're looking for a few good men for the medal to be Marines. America loves its sports. America. Across the land, a tradition stands of sports and NBC. America loves its sports. America. NBC style. On the touchdown by McMahon, apparently a penalty marked off, but now at the 50 yard line, here's McMahon. He's scored. Roland James will reach in. McMahon wants to spike it. James just casually knocks the ball out of his hands. McMahon in turn throws it at James, and after that a little push and shove and the penalty went against New England. 15 yards and the Bears will kick off from the 50. And starring will sit on that one and the Patriots will play it from the 20 yard line. Dick, you get an idea of McMahon's spiciness and toughness. They were telling me that in the giant game that Lawrence Taylor came by McMahon chasing in pursuit on a play, and McMahon threw on the back of his legs in the legal clip zone and knocked him down. Now how many quarterbacks are going to go after a linebacker like that on the field? He thinks he's a, well, Ditka says it, he thinks he's the best running back we've got on the team, thinks he's the best quarterback, and also thinks he's one of the better blockers. And he's got a good eye on him next to Perry in the middle of the line. He does have a lineman's mentality. Well his teammates love him for that too. He's really a favorite with him. I say that in a positive way. It sounds like a knock on him, but he's a tough guy. That's not a boy's game. That's not a knock on me. I gotta go home with you. James can't catch the ball. It'll be second and ten. Chicago Bears Chief Executive Officer and President who has won some awards as the executive of the year in the NFL and deservedly so. And how granddad George Hallis must be proud of Michael McKenskey, the 43 year old. But there he is, 43 year old grandson of Papa Bear there without the jacket on. What a year. He's got to be terribly thrilled. Just terribly thrilled for all of the people in Chicago. Second and ten for Grogan. Down 30 to 3. James gets 2. Duerson makes the tackle. You wonder at this point Merlin, 30 to 3, if Mike Ditka will call off some of that 46 defense and just play it a little straighter and not really punish the Patriots. What answer is that in this game? Well, I gotta remind you that Buddy Ryan calls the defenses. In fact, there's been a little bit of friction between he and Ditka because this that's the option play. Grogan coming down on the option. They're pulling out all the stops. He just comes down and flip that ball out to James. But even then, he can't do it. Interesting story. I'll tell you about him in just a second. James 3 on that carry. Here they come. And intercepted for a touchdown, the rookie Reggie Phillips. Reggie Phillips from SMU, a second round draft pick this year, playing because of the injury to Leslie Frazier, and he will tuck away a Super Bowl thrill. He's still got his hands on that football with its special commemorative Super Bowl 20 on it. That'll sit proudly. That ball not badly thrown bounced in the air. That's just like serving it up. Twenty eight yards unofficially on the return by Phillips, who did not have an interception during the course of the year. Kevin Butler and the extra point. No doubt about this one. The Bears long drought for Chicago will end here in New Orleans. The tight end. That ball was thrown behind him. He had to turn back. Just got enough to bat it up. Phillips knew exactly where he was going. Joining her batterly, Willie Brown and Jack Squirick with Super Bowl intercept TDs. Don't just ask for a light beer. Ask them to bring out their best. Will Mark Hamill's dreams come true? Then the spectacular premiere of Peter the Great next Sunday. Down to starting comes the kickoff. And he's bumped out of bounds at the 30 yard line. Dennis Gentry in on the tackle. I started to tell a story about Buddy Ryan. This is not the first time that Buddy Ryan has lined up opposite of Coach Berry on the other side of the field. You mentioned that Raymond Berry's father is coaching down in Texas. And Ryan also coached down there. Raymond's father is in Paris. He coached at Gainesville in that 6 AAA league. And he said we always called him Coach Berry because he was a little older than we were. You know Buddy Ryan came to the Bears with Neil Armstrong and when Armstrong was fired as the head coach Gary Fensick wrote a letter to George Allison said we want Buddy Ryan to stay. He was going to be swept out with Armstrong. Long to Morgan and broken up by Mike Richardson at the last moment. Just as a tag to that story Mike Ditka was not terribly happy that he couldn't choose all of his own staff. But let's look at Morgan on that play working man to man on Richardson with time for Grogan. He gets that ball deep but Richardson again closes as that ball slightly under thrown. He gets his hands on it and knocks it away. Well we start to deal in those kinds of statistics and we're only six minutes left in the third quarter. Could be the biggest round in history as all the earmarks doesn't. Complete and then a fumble and the Bears have it again. Wilbur Marshall at the 40. Marshall laterals to Wilson. Hello and finally Wilson down at the 38 and they're playing playground with the Patriots now. Cedric Jones belted after making that catch and the Bears have another turnover. Grogan did his part got the ball downfield had enough yardage for the first down but Cedric Jones is just going to take a real hit right there. BAM Fencing number 45 looked like he'd been fired out of a cannon. That ball took one hop and Marshall who has great speed for a linebacker. It looks like a little rugby going on there. Oh my. So the Bears have it at the 38 yard line leading 37 to 3 with 543 left in the third. Walter Payton tackled by Steve Nelson and now as long as the Bears seem to be on a touchdown tirade. I think the fans even the Patriot fans who might be succumbing to all of this would want Payton to have a touchdown. There's going to be another bear to score. I think everyone's rooting for this man. He's mounting some yardage obviously and you have to know that he is the number one priority of that Patriot defense. They're chanting Walter Walter using that little stutter and that limp leg and then the charge driving inside the 25 for a first down a six yard carry. That helmet look worn. He's been wearing the same one since his rookie year in seventy five. A few grooves and scratches on that helmet. There's the little stutter step you talked about it. Payton has his own way of striding in the open field. Almost his signature with that ball. Well documented. He was a winner of the Soul Train Dance Contest out of high school and he's used that fancy footwork well in the NFL. This time drop for a loss as Roland James and Steve Nelson make the hit. You could hear Nelson popping in on that play from up here. Dick one of the things that Mike Ditka had to do when he went to Chicago was to straighten out a real feud between the offense and the defense there. The defense had become so dominant that they were actually intimidating their own offense. Ditka could remember that because back and even in 63 when the Bears won the championship that was a team where the defense dominated again. The Bears won that championship averaging only about 10 points a game on offense and the offense would come off the field after making a mistake. The defense would push them around and shove them so that they had some experience there. That is an incomplete pass ball whistled in. Well that was a let's remember as a Fortunato and the Morris and Obradovich and Bill George the middle linebacker Doug Atkins all time greats. And you know we saw the score earlier for that championship game which was what 14 to 10 right. And in that game the two scores came off interception returns that set up field position on the 14 yard line in the seven yard line. They ended up taking it in for scores to get the two touchdowns. Well there's one man watching today that can identify with the Eastern and Grogan that's why a title. Remember how they battered him that day in 63 third down and long. Why. Touchdown Dennis Jeffrey. No he said that amount of the one yard line. First and go all at the one gentry so close to his touchdown. And I wonder who's going to get the call on this one yard line. Well Walter Payton doesn't have one. They're sending in Perry or are they. Yeah they are. Here's McMahon again using his mobility to get open. Nobody home. Oh I don't think that he was out of bounds when he caught the ball wasn't he. We can look at the end of that play. Not that they need any extra help but it looked as if he did. He didn't even have one foot down much less to. From that angle. May we get another view. First of all the reality of first and goal. That one registered three point eight. Another Super Bowl record the first refrigerator to score. And the largest running back ever to score at touchdown. And Walter Payton I guess they figure they got a whole quarter to go. And they're going to run out of football is the way they're going. Well they had thirty six to start. Butler to add the extra point. Well there is some drama left. Who will score next. Forty three to three. Look at this. Better better open the door at that end he's coming. At UPS it was never our intention to become a tourist attraction. But every year scores of efficiency minded Japanese businessmen show up and ask to tour our facilities. Tuesday all the way to all these rich folks are crooks. Hannibal gets teed off at some high class creeps. We've got is our rough punch. Bingo. Tuesday. All the Super Bowl shuffle is on the other sidelines. Occasionally you'll see a patriot player lift his eyes and look at the scoreboard. And the clock. And the clock. And I'm sure they can't believe what they see there. And who does he get hit there. Well I thought the Dennis Gentry catch was not in bounds and the Patriots aren't the only team that's had a rough day. The officials have had some problems too. Right here touches the ball and the first foot neither foot was in is on the line. The second one is on the out of bounds. So well thank goodness that isn't in a in a 3 3 game that that play occurs. That'll open up that can again about having television as a as a element for the officials. Well and that's a camera that aims right down the sidelines so the angle won't lie. Starring. And Richardson bumps him out of bounds. After a game of 18. Make that 15. Tony Eason starter went 0 4 6 sack three times fumbled the ball and gave way to Steve Drogon came down with the flu late in the week running a temperature. Well I'll tell you I think it was sick to his stomach before I left the field that I'm not so sure it was the flu that was still after him. Might have been the way the Bears were after it. Look at that 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 men on the line of scrimmage. Is he in bounds. Yes. Complete at the forty seven of the Bears. And this is the first time on their own. But man having that left hand wrapped in ice. First time that the Patriots have driven into bear territory on their own their score. The field goal came after they recovered a Peyton fumble inside the Chicago 20 early in the game. I remember they only made one excursion into Patriot terror. He's in he's in the outer space. Starring almost intercepted by Mike Richardson a flag is down. Dave Doerrson was the defensive back charging through on Drogon but picked up neatly by the New England line offside against the Bears. Here's a man who has paid his dues veteran Steve Nelson 12 years out of North Dakota State. I'd say nobody worked harder today. Something that people don't understand I think who who haven't been a part of a team on a day when you're losing you often play so much harder and burn so much energy you come out of here almost crawling. And yet nothing has gone right. Frustration. Oh almost almost an inner rage along that sideline but that and disbelief. Robert Weathers hit by Doris and here's Weathers at 222 and Doris and 20 pounds lighter and was that a picture book tackle. What a bright man to it. There's a great story out of the Ram playoff game. They said that as the Bears had gone into that nine man front that Dieter Brock had lined up and Dickerson walked up to Brock and said you are going to audible aren't you. Notre Dame or Dorson. That was offside. I'll go through the play. Derek Ramsey to the 28 flags down Reggie Phillips made the tackle a game of a dozen. We'll see if it counts. The penalty is declined. First down. So with a score of 44 to 3 Chicago New England a first down at the Bear 28. In their eagerness to get to that football dent and one of the linebackers on the other side Wilson I believe. And I think Grogan using that cadence he's always done that very well barking the count. Finally got something going here but it might be just a trifle late. Most of that yardage coming here in the third quarter. And then the second half of the game. And then Grogan scrambling to the 26 yard line again of about three that bear defense will be well represented in the Pro Bowl dent and Hampton the two and single Terry and Wilson two linebackers and Dorson made it at a safety and now you wonder what Todd Bell. He's got to be a very important man in the defense team. Buddy Ryan said very simply he was the most important man in that defensive unit because he had to play the linebacker safety had to handle so many responsibilities and yet they have operated beautifully without any kind of pressure on the linebacker. Richardson again getting a hand on a pass intended for Stanley Morgan going back to Al Harrison and Todd Bell the two bears two starters two outstanding players who decided to set out the year. I think he felt he was hit late on that. I think he did. And I'm not so sure he wasn't right. He didn't see the ball. Well Miss Morgan. That's not why he was reacting. And the Bears have called a timeout. It's also talking about Bell and Harris. How about a guy like Jim Osborne or Terry Schmidt who retired last year after all of those losing years. And here are the Bears with a big score on the scoreboard and all the celebration to do. You know almost say well how couldn't I why couldn't I have just waited one more year. Well I know one thing Al McGuire and Marv Albert who did the basketball game preceding today's action Gary Fentzik you know he drove Al around he's a former limo driver and security guard he's out there on defense and he came this year when the doctors checked on him they looked at that shoulder. The first answer the first diagnosis was an operation for McMahon. They got a second opinion happily and they said a couple of weeks a week's rest would do it which was true. First down from the 18 when Brogan touched it down at the 30 yard line and Dan Hampton gets the sack this time Hampton who didn't play football till he was a junior in high school he played the drums guitar saxophone piano and now plays on quarterbacks. Oh does he ever. And I've got to believe that with this overwhelming performance on defense not not just here today but throughout this year. We'll have more mini bear defenses popping up very soon and we'll be back after these messages from your local station. The last precinct breaks their huddle their wide receiver moves into position while their tight end makes an adjustment. Shotgun formation the ball is snapped and here comes the blitz. It looks like a handoff but wait he fumbles. There's a came up with the Bears and so is everything else. 44 to 3 we open the fourth quarter Patriots their deepest drive here to be an offside Bears and mostly to to pooh that's first time he's been in the backfield unable to handle a pass. One Samoran and the crowd here at the Superdome the International Olympic Committee President as NBC looks ahead to 88 and our opportunity to cover the games in Seoul Korea. Two penalties against the Bears and that was why the confusion both illegal use of the hands and offside both five yard penalties but the penalty one penalty carries the first down. So the Patriots take that one in 1963 it was a great year for the Bears the Patriots the only other time they went to a championship game was in the American Football League Championship. Julius Adams was not in that one he came a little bit later and that also was a disastrous result out of Balboa Stadium in San Diego where the Chargers beat them the Boston Patriots 51 10 and Stanley Morgan has first and goal at the end of the season. He's a defensive line coach for the Patriots Eddie Kayak was on that team that lost his Astor Lee and disastrously and he said he actually was on the team that was going to try and have a chance at the first Super Bowl which was later. That's 19 years ago and he said that Mr. Solomon had bought them sport coats. Let's watch the refrigerator getting iced down on this one. You think that helmet is in a weapon. To two boy and two men there and Doris and and Richardson just quickly to finish that story. Nineteen years ago Eddie Kayak was playing for Mr. Sullivan playing for the Patriots. They were hoping to be in the first Super Bowl and he bought them sport coats. Three button sport coats to wear to the game to the Super Bowl. They never got a chance to wear them and Eddie's wife kept trying to throw it out over the years. He wore it on the way down here for this game. Maybe now he'll let her throw it out. Sweet story. Morgan and he's down for a loss case you're wondering only one team has not scored a touchdown in Super Bowl history. The Miami Dolphins. You remember that one. Well Bob Gracie was involved and we'll get his reaction in a moment. We'll get that microphone open there Steve Fuller getting ready to replace Jim McMahon. Bob were you healthy that year. I'm sitting here cringing during this whole ballgame thinking back to when Dallas beat his whatever it was 24 to 3 or something. Right. But I remember very well not scoring a touchdown. Well here's Grogan trying to get the Patriots off the hook on third and go. Mrs. Stanley Morgan fourth and goal. That was Super Bowl six and the Cowboys prevail 24 3 but greasy and the Dolphins would make amends they won the next two years. You should see Bob orchestrating that you look like John Williams in the Boston Pops. That's the undefeated season and then they handed it to the Vikings. Well the Patriots obviously aren't going to go for a field goal here and the Bear fans don't want their team to give up a touchdown. But they get it Irving Friar first time they throw to him today and Friar clutches the Patriots only touchdown. Friar as we said once wanted so desperately to make a big play to do something felt he'd let his team down. Well there's a little face saving and putting a touchdown on the board even though the score is 44 to 9. Well the Bears have only had to kick one so Friar Friar hasn't had any chance to return any and that was that long kick by Buford that Friar unable to return. Franklin adds the extra point 13 minutes and 14 seconds left and the Bears lead by 34. You broke it they won't give you a new one. We'll see about that. When Fred and Raymond Gillette drove all the way to Sears and Rockland to get their hammer replaced it had been a while. Say would you look at that. Probably don't even sell hammers anymore. But they found a lot of things had changed. This way. Excuse me would you like to try some. What. What. Oh you're going to smell pretty. Fred what are you doing in there. What about our hammer. But you could still count on Sears. It's a craftsman. Right craftsman hand tools have an unlimited warranty. There. Just for our records can you remember when you bought it. Tony Franklin about to kick off 44 to 10 the Bears have already established a Super Bowl scoring record. Forty four points the last two Super Bowls San Francisco and the Raiders scored 38 and we have almost a full quarter to go. Willie Galt. And he's to the 24 yard line. Good hit by number 52 Johnny Rembert. Dallas Cowboys. That's a small world this world of football the team picture in 1969. It featured the two coaches in the game today. Raymond Berry was an assistant coach for Tom Landry and the veteran tight end was Mike Ditka. We asked him how that there was as a player and he said when that could got there. That his body had really been hammered and he was not able to run but he was still doing some great things. He came back the next year after working out twice a day through all of the spring and summer and actually ran a four seven in the trading camp. Steve Fuller has taken over at quarterback and he knows who to give the ball to. Walter Payton Roland James makes the stop after a seven yard game and again for those of you that may be joining us in progress with a score 44 to 10. William the refrigerator Perry has a touchdown the quarterback McMahon a couple of sneaks for touchdown but Walter Payton does not have a touchdown and so much focus on Payton who labored through years where well it's the first year he's run behind a man judged in the Pro Bowl alignment. He's picked up all those record setting yards behind men judged by their peers as not being Pro Bowl players. Nothing there. Dick we have talked about the domination by the Bears defensive line. How about this Bears offensive line. Covert and boards and Hilgenberg and Thayer and Van Horn. They have been almost as awesome in the way they have been able to control the Patriots defense and move that ball down the field clearing broad holes and alleys for their running backs. You know this is a team that's not exactly gray in the mustache either. They are the youngest team in the NFC. They average only twenty five point one years of age. The Bears did go has really built something special here. Payton out of bounds at the 33. That'll be short of the first down by a couple of yards. It's been said of the Bears that they are a traditional team featuring the running attack featuring their defense. But they also do something that you have to know about if you if you know that can unhappy even there with a mistake as he talks to his quarterback they've controlled the line of scrimmage the best running game in football in the last three years. And of course the best defense against the run this year. The number one defense this year to Maury Buford a former San Diego charger acquired in the summer this year by the Bears Irving Friar. Looking for his first chance to return this is Buford's second kick of the game that statistic revealing the dominance of the Bears. Another good one. Friar. At the 30. Tripped up at the 38 and he had a lot of blockers out in front. Jim Bowman made the play that might have saved the touchdown. Or actually made the block. This is my uncle Ebenezer a small businessman who still has his first dollar his last dollar and everything in between. Not true. I just bought him an altar personal copier. There's a bizarre twist in the contract. Derek Ramsey another fumble and the Bears have it at the 43 yard line. Or are they going to rule that an incomplete pass. No it's a fumble. Mike Singletary when you hear the popping you know he's right around it. It was Sean Gale who delivered the blow and Singletary covered the ball. Sean Gale doesn't get many chances except in the long yardage. He takes advantage of it here as you look from high above. Good pass by Grogan to his tight end across the middle. But watch the hit by Sean Gale right here. Head on the football. Nowhere to go. Singletary so alert. Fix it up. Here's Gale again as Ramsey comes out gets the ball and gets Gale. Or they. We've seen it from every man on the team. They just don't hit. They don't just grab you. They really bury a shoulder and a helmet into it. Steve Fuller the marcher on incomplete broken up by LaPette. Well this game is being televised not only in the millions of homes in the United States but around the world carried in England live and France and Italy. And I know there is someone special watching in England or daddy. Well I'm going to get a critique from my daughter Kelly who's over there in Cambridge watching this live staying up late. A long game for those fellows. Walter Payton a little misdirection. And down at the 41 yard line. LaPette. Ronnie LaPette has played a solid game at that corner against pass and run. Heard a couple of times early but has come back to make some big hits and make some good plays. He like Peyton the man he just tackled. And they're not playing football like to work behind the drums. They can both handle the skins. Miami or Florida. Marjoram. Ortego. Two backup receivers are in Dennis Gentry is in and gold in. So they go at four wide. Third and eight. Wide open as Peyton. But the pass just out of his reach. Peyton along with all of his many marks as the Bears all time receiver. Four hundred and twenty two. Ditka had four hundred and twenty seven but some of those came when he was with the Cowboys. The Bears have put together an offense that has poked holes in the defense of the Patriots all day long. That ball thrown just a little bit further and Peyton is off and running. Could you walk on your hands. Could you stand on your hands. They say he can go 50 yards on his hands. Walter Peyton. I'm afraid I might have broken my neck if I had tried that. Please bruise your nose. Buford DePont to Friar. Beautifully kicked by Buford and down to the four yard line. This one for Papa Bear, the patriarch of the National Football League. Forty years he's coached the Chicago Bears. Another thriller in the Super Bowl. I tell you Dick, I still believe that that two week wait really hurts the teams. Makes it so hard for them to keep the rhythm that they have established during this season. I don't know that the game could live up to the hype that we as part of the media put on it. But I do wish that there was a way of playing that with a seven day delay. Patriots start from the four yard line. And Brogan from his end zone unloads to Friar. Just misses connections. Friar frustrated. Will return to the huddle in the end zone. The G.S.H. is most all of you know but some of you perhaps watching the Bears for the first time. Of course is in tribute to George S. Hallis who told so many marvelous stories remember sitting in his office one day and regaling me for a couple of hours as we did a feature on him and told us about when he went to see Calvin Coolidge the president of the United States in Washington D.C. And Mr. Coolidge not a football fan when told that George Hallis and the Chicago Bears were I thought he was going to see a circus act. He was looking for the for the for the animals not the football team. Morgan. And he's out to the 18 19 yard line. That'll be a first down Ron Rivera made the tackle. So the Bears now you see Cliff thrift in there Ron Rivera as Mike Dick is going to give everyone a chance to play important that each of those players be able to say not only was I a part of that Bear team but I played I think you'll see Ray doing the same thing toward the end of this game giving each of his players a chance to at least get out on the field wholesale changes. There's Michael McCasky the 43 year old grandson of Alice. Now the president of the club Tony Collins and he's out to another first down at the 30 yard line. Mike Harden Stein the veteran from Penn State the oldest bear made the tackle and gave him a chance to get out on the field. The oldest bear made the tackle and congratulations already being sent and accepted on that bear sideline. Billy Galt said well Mr. President how about a bonus. How about a raise next year. Gold had a big game and when they needed long yardage he was there. I wonder if maybe Richard Dent won't stop him and say look I didn't hold out in fact I was here all day long today. Maybe we ought to sit down talk about my contract prior out of bounds at the 45 yard line with another first down a 16 yard play stops the clock eight minutes and eight seconds left in this Super Bowl 20 dominated by the Bears. The Patriots forced a fumble early from Walter Payton got three points out of it but they struggled after that and the Bears dominating in fact New England with only one first down the entire first half today. That's Dawson Lynn Dawson on the sideline with that knee propped up. Certainly one of the blows that these Patriots took early took them out of some of their game plan offensively. The Patriots 10 was injured on the first scrimmage play. Another intercept. On his way. Tim Morrissey to the five yard line. Jim Morrissey the rookie from Michigan State. Tony Collins saved the touchdown. Morrissey a ninth round draft pick. 48 yards on the return. Well everyone not only in the act but everyone doing something they can talk about. That was a gimme ball thrown over the head of Collins. Morrissey just tapped from behind on the heels 83 Cedric Jones polishing him off after he'd been hit on the heels by Tony Collins. The national football league is intended for the private use of our audience any rebroadcast or other use of this telecast without the express written consent. Now the National Football League is prohibited. Tony Collins still down on the far side of the field as he dove he must have banged his head on the ground. Looks like he's getting up now but very slowly. Looking right down from the gondola high above. You see Grogan and that ball zipping over the head of the intended receiver. And then it's another bear celebration. But look at Collins how he hustled to get to him. He he went after him with pride did he not. He certainly did. And so we see a number 72. Will Walter Payton get his chance. I wonder I wonder if this you know that Patriot defense has got to feel like they've been out there all day because they have they have literally been on the field almost the entire day. Oh it's first and goal with just under eight minutes left 44 to 10 the Bears have invited the Patriots into their den and the Bears were hardly in hibernation but they'll sleep well after this. Everyone in red knew was going to get the ball. He pays for it. A couple of yard game. Those folks out there aren't lying down on the ground. Did you hear the popping on that play. Payton said he wishes he could play defense he said I just love to hear. And he is the kind of back that doesn't come in there side saddle in his way he comes right at you. Perry goes out. John Hannah the great old pro guard of the Patriots. I got to wonder what must be going through his mind right at this moment. His brother Charlie has a Super Bowl championship ring with the Raiders two years ago. Steve Moore. Derek Ramsey. Steve Nelson. Certainly King on Peyton in this situation. You have to wonder Dick the Bears talked about the fact that that that loss that very one sided game to the 49ers really set their emotional key for this season and pointed them at this Super Bowl. They flew through the season and they arrived here to carry home their victory. Perhaps this game may do the same thing for the New England Patriots who proved to be such a wonderful and surprising team in the in the AFC and yet have been destroyed. They're number eighty seven on the offense still second down. Amory Moore had the tight end with a block a 10 yard penalty out to the 14. Well the Bears Hey you know the perfect season of the Miami Dolphins was not equal to only because the Dolphins were able to beat the Bears on that Monday night. They had to block a kick and do some other very special things and it was a well constructed offense by Shula. As Miami beat them 38 24 to deny them the perfect year. Fuller had already crossed the line of scrimmage when he threw the ball. That's a penalty. Illegal forward pass. And Brett Cashon agrees. Steve Drogon was actually joking earlier this week he was going to try to put himself in on special teams. He didn't think he'd get a chance to play at quarterback today and a slow start by Easton the way they battered him around and perhaps he since flu had something to do with it. Drogon thrown into the fire. Illegal forward pass beyond the line of scrimmage number four on the offense five yards from where it was thrown plus loss of a down the third down to get a double dose on that penalty five yards plus losing a down. And so now it becomes third and goal from the 18. And that's a good thing. Dicke with a deep set eyes and they're close together in that pearl brown the way he does his hair even has a bare look does he not. It's a lot to bring him down at the 12. Tells you the most about his character. There's Peyton downfield to throw a great block on Steve Nelson I'll tell you that hurt. He's got to have another injury downfield blocking by backs and wide receivers Bob Gracie it's something we don't often catch with what the real good teams their receivers do it. Turnovers on the other hand Don Shulow already had to play aggressive high risk football almost has to play double up and catch up. Well he's got Dan Marino and he'll get the ball first to start the second half the statistics in the first half were basically even except for those big turnovers the two fumbles. Here are those statistics and of course one that jumps out at you those two fumbles and that has been a great story for this New England team. They've had 10 takeaways only two giveaways so far during this playoff and I'll tell you that when you can keep your mistakes low and give the ball up only occasionally and that's what Barry talked about error free football. They have played it. It has been successful. You've got to believe that's what he talked to him about it. Miami with its final word from coach Don Shula and Marino and the Dolphins well know their position. One of the things you have to be concerned about Dick we watched that a little of the locker room scene last week from Los Angeles. Highly emotional team there that's New England team weeping and crying and it was such a great victory for them. They poured out a lot of emotion Raymond Barry deliberately took some time off gave his team a couple of days off to try and regroup that emotional energy. They've had a very emotional first half a very successful first half. Now the key to winning for them to maintain that emotional intensity through this second half. I wonder how much they have left in those reserve tanks. Thirty minutes to the Super Bowl unless of course we have a sudden death overtime. Tony Franklin to kick it off Lorenzo Hampton at the other end for Miami 17 7 as we open the second half spins down short Hampton at the nine. He has some running room. And Greg Hawthorne recovers for New England. Oh my the turnover table continues to rock in the direction of the Patriots. They are now 13 and two and that takeaway giveaway department in the playoffs. Don Shula and Chuck Steadley both referred to waking up last week after that big 61 yard run to start the second half by the Cleveland Browns. Well time running out here and again it's that hard hit Raymond Barry. You see the numbers right there. Raymond Barry used that as one of his strategies one of his keys. We've got to strip the football away and take it or they have done it today. Greg James first down has nearly 10. You green finally made the stop and the Patriots with a 17 7 lead could not get a bigger break than stopping Miami on the opening kickoff recovering the fumble deep in the dolphin territory where they have recovered two other miscues that led to 10 earlier points. Coming out of that locker room you establish the momentum of the second half in this first series. Miami with all its plans offensively and with all its thoughts suddenly is on defense again. Collins who caught a touchdown pass in the first half slams to a first down at about the 11. Don Schuller undoubtedly thinking what everyone else is in this stadium you can't turn it over and when the big ones and he's down in that department three turnovers to none. First down at the 11. And the big one for about four yards. But Brown and on the stop for Miami. The danger now for this Miami Dolphins defense things are getting a little desperate and occasionally you try and do more than your job you try and do something extra. You still try and stay within the integrity of the defense and try and force the turnover. James appears to be close to a first down at the two. And they have rushed the football Miami's weakness it's Achilles throughout the year shown again last week when they barely scraped back against Cleveland a team that rushed for over 250 yards and the Patriots beating them to the punch on the ground today. And he said it right after that game he said when a when a team like Cleveland averages six point eight yards per carry. What do you think the New England Patriots are going to do. And indeed, that's exactly what they have done. The measurement third and that much. But New England recovered a first quarter fumble at the Miami 20 Nathan fumbling on the first play of the first half just as Miami has fumbled the ball away on the first play of the second half on its possession. Miami was able to stop the Patriots and force a field goal at the spot. This is third and inches. Tony Eason watch him check that dolphin defense. No touchdown but very close it appears to having the first down Jackie ship leading that hard dolphin defensive charge. And now we're talking to Tom Ramsey as quarterback here to signal a play in Barry calling more and more of the plays himself less Stechel did a lot of that early in the season. But now as Eason has returned to the lineup we might add that Grogan called his own plays while he was quarterbacking. Now there's signal in and Barry has taken a lot more of that responsibility during the latter part of the year. But make it ships defensive play denies the first down until fourth and the same distance. Now having made conservative decisions up to this point. What does Raymond Barry do. I think he's going to go for it. That's interesting isn't it. But the night out of character he has been while conservative also a gambler all season long. Big big play early in the second half. Wide open Weathers touchdown flag is down. Robert Weathers all alone. A flag is down in the end zone. No it is not. It's against Miami. And the Patriots ever closer have opened a twenty three seven lead. And he can only shake his head as his defense again pulled on a play faking into the line the running game again making that play go you have to respect it down there with inches to go. And Barry willing to go with the unusual play the play action pass and third and inches. Franklin has the extra point. Tony Eason has thrown touchdown passes of one and two yards three fumbles. Cars and trucks. The more you look the more you like Mazda value by Coors and Coors life. Here's with a difference worth tasting and by Hewlett Packard the people who turn your business computing problem into a business computing solution. New England Patriots capitalizing on a third fumble recovery of open a twenty four to seven lead against the Dolphins here in Miami and Tony Franklin roots at high. Hampton the rookie at the 20 and to the twenty four yard line Miami will begin there. Let's go to Bob Gracie. Dick here is Weathers lineup in the backfield. He just got around a play action pass. Ramsey is going to sneak out but send line 51 is grabbing a hold of him and you know sometimes when you're so predictable and conservative as Raymond Barry has been this year. And if you do a lot of self scouting you can use that to your own best efforts because you know you're conservative and you know the other team doesn't expect it. And then some big plays can come of it. Very the only one not showing emotion on the sidelines. That's true to character. That's true to Marino a lot of work to do one hops it out to Nat Moore and the reason why the pass was short was Don Blackman 55 was on his chest. You can afford to play more aggressively now on defense. Now this Miami team is as we said really got to double up and catch up time becomes a factor. You feel more comfortable defensively you can start to blitz more and this Patriot defense is not a blitzing defense. But I wouldn't be surprised to see them coming more now at Marino with that nice cushion. Reno has been sacked once. And almost intercepted by Blackman again and he's having a big game. There's Rod Rust defensive coordinator signaling his defenses onto the field and interestingly in his own way he may be the man responsible for getting Barry into this coaching job. That's right. Ron Meyer was fired because he wanted to fire Russ. Well he actually fired Russ. The players revolted had a meeting. Meyer ended up being fired. Touch for five sets of hands before it falls in complete a flag is down. Look like a volleyball game out there. Motion against Miami how the Dolphins unable to gain a yard in that position. I think that ball is going to be batted about four or five times. The first bat by Marino or by Duper as he goes up. That's one. Lapette two off the helmet there. Marion Marion three four. Well it falls just out of the reach of a lot of eager Patriots. Roland James back at the thirty two. Roby. Dying spiral. James Fubbles. And the Dolphins have recovered. A flag is down. But Brown recovered the ball. Let's see if it counts. May have been a question. There's the first mistake by New England. Let's see how it picks up Miami. We mentioned at the top of the show that New England would probably be able to overcome Irving Friar's loss as a receiver. But not as a punt returner. Right there of the return scene. That's Roland James. Only two punt returns on the year coming up. And in a situation where he could have just caught it and tucked it away. He turned it over. Miami gets a break at the forty three trailing twenty four to seven with eleven minutes plus remaining in the third quarter. Joe Carter. The second year man from Alabama. Well these fish ain't dead yet as they would say here in Miami. Carter pulls out of a tackle by Nelson. Gets away from. McGrew number fifty. Got a whole horse to host the Patriots on his tail. But ends up with a big game. And lights up this Miami offense a little bit. Carter who had a 12 yard run in the first half. And now an 18 yards camper boy did he deny some tackling. And the big fullback is to the New England 17 where it'll be second and three or four to go. You see the power of Davenport. That was illustrated last week as he made that big 31 yard run bouncing off people. Watch him here as he pulls away from Steve Nelson who's a deadly tackler. Look at that leg strength gets away from Nelson and almost from Roland. Makes a big gain on that play second about three and a half yards. Offense on the sidelines Tony Collins of the Patriots. He has a touchdown a four yard pass. Easton with one two and four yard passes for the Patriots for scores. Second and short Marino. Into the end zone. Intercepted. Fred Marion. And Marion who has an interception in each of the playoff games has made it a hat trick. Three for three. And the Dolphins tonight again. Shula wondering what happened on that play. Literally staring out in disbelief. His receiver fell down but I don't think he could have caught it anyway because the ball is right to Marion. Clayton coming to the inside and watch him as he trips over his own foot. I think LePet maybe touched the back of his foot. An idea doesn't conform to a nine to five schedule. So at Hewlett Packard we're always thinking because even though we sell business computing systems. What we really do is solve problems. We never stop asking what if. Jim Mike I've got an idea on that branch office network. What if we connect all their PCs. The more things cost the better they are. That's not always true. Consider Barbasol. Barbasol has a thick and rich a lather as any other leading foam. But Barbasol can cost half as much as the higher priced foam. Consider also Barbasol Glide Stick deodorant. It has a fresh clean scent like any deodorant should. But Barbasol can cost as much as a dollar less than the high priced sticks. Barbasol Shave Cream and Barbasol Glide Stick. Look Miami is trying to get the ball on a slant right here in this area to Clayton. Now watch Marion. He's going to drift over there if we could go ahead and run the play. Watch as Clayton goes in there. If you stop it right there you can see that he tried to get it beyond there. He tried to hit it past Marion. Marion stopped right in the path of the ball. There's the trip. You'll see it right there. The foot coming in. LaPette look at that. Just a tap on the back of the heel. Incidental contact but it cost the interception. Craig James falling straight ahead and good yardage again for New England on first down. Second down that will be a first down out to the 37. Dick and talking to both Duper and Clayton. It was their feeling that the officials in that Cleveland game not calling nearly as many penalties down field. Giving the defensive men more latitude. Let's look in at the battle on the line of scrimmage. That surge and again New England taking advantage of its size going right at the heart of that Miami defense. Charles moved out of there by Wooten the left or the right guard. Brock up to pick up one of the linebackers. The man of driving out of their hallway. Boy I tell you they just keep pushing and pushing more that whole offensive line driving Miami off of the ball. Rain falling in Miami's Orange Bowl. Less than eight minutes left in the third quarter. New England with a handsome lead as Collins carries out to the Patriot 40. Doug Better has made the tackle. No question. We expected the Patriots to out rest the Dolphins and Miami was hoping in fact Doug Better said we're going to try to hold them to four yards or less per rush. Not so. Second down and seven. A long seven. Alan squirts for four. He'll green with a hit. It's such a big advantage for running backs when their offensive line is getting into the defense and moving them off the ball. There's time then for them to get their good drive upfield and make the cuts from a positive position to make them at full speed. The defense on the other hand having to try and react laterally. You end up trying to arm tackle it gives those offensive backs a chance to go for an extra two or three yards. They better their average the six best in the league on the ground and we still have 20 plus minutes left. Craig James running the daylight in a first down at the 43 of Miami. Well we've been talking about that Patriot offensive line three first round draft picks on the left side of the line. Holloway Hanna and Brock Hanna driving his man back off the ball. Holloway getting a piece of his and James just exploding through there out of the tackle by Bud Brown out of a second tackle by Judson makes the extra yardage. Jackie Shipp who made the tackle limps off the field for the Dolphins. Mark Brown has replaced him. No Jay Brophy goes in first down at the forty three six minutes left in the third quarter and the Patriots lead twenty four to seven. Weather stopped on first down Bob Merlin and Dick you're talking about the blocking up front of the offensive line. Let's go back to that last play and watch the straight blocking Hanna right here and on the linebacker and you'll see James finding a little hole right in between here and running right up through James with the good eyes and good feet has the ability to get through the hole after a good block by Tony Collins. James said something very nice to me last week and talking to him he said you know I don't run with my feet to run with my eyes. My feet just kind of follow along behind. You're right Bob great eyes on the part of James on that play. Weathers carrying his two hundred twenty two pounds to the Miami 40. You green and Mark Brown with the tackle. That's a colorful stop green and brown and a black wood there as well. You see you green going to that face mask and eye injury early in the year and he has a clear mask across his face. Steve Nelson in fact wore an identical mask during several games this year after an eye injury and I haven't talked to you about the mask but Steve said something interesting he said I got an echo all the time. It sounds like I was talking in a cave. Third and seven big play for the Miami defense. He's in a rare throw. And he hits his man to two. It'll be close to a first down at the thirty four yard line. Here is to be a little shy. And again when you're running game is going when you can force those linebackers and those linemen to concentrate on the run. You've got time to throw the football linebacker isolated there that's Brzezinski trying to get out to the outside to cover to two to two. Usually the short yardage runner did a good job of hauling that one in and on fourth down in the yard again. Barry going to go for it. He went for it and forth and go. There are some interesting stats before Brogan played. Look at the numbers for recent and then look at the numbers after Brogan was hurt. He has had a great last half of the season. Weather is on the pitch. It's going to be close. Miami fans think that he was stopped. New England fans feel that he has made the first down and it's the Patriots who are right again. Dick maybe we can as as we look again at the hard jaws of Don Shula. Maybe we can go back and get that statistic again because I really think it's interesting. One of the things that really helped Tony Eason after a bad start on the season and he was dealing with his third offense in three years. Barry putting in his own offense. He had a chance to watch this man Steve Grogan go in and run the offense. Look at those latter numbers. The reversal in touchdowns and interceptions. A lot of that I think came because he was able to get himself calmed down and able to learn by watching on the ground. And that figures now for the Patriots with a big lead. He's trying to chew up that clock and it ticks away against Miami 333 332 331 left in this third quarter. The Patriots with a 24 7 advantage. The only Miami touchdown came in this second quarter when the Dolphins took a 7 3 lead. It was Marino today and Johnson. But four turnovers have not only stopped the Dolphins but New England has taken advantage on three of those for a score and trying to do that now on this pass intersection that started this drive. Collins plowing for six or seven to the 24. Just shy of another first down. First turnover a fumble led to a field goal. Then the next two fumbles became touchdowns. Those fumbles recovered by New England were at the Miami 20 the Miami 36 the Miami 25 the last one on the kickoff to start this second half. Then when the Dolphins finally got one of their own Marino was intercepted by the omnipresent Fred Marion. Oh he seems to be in the right spot. That ball has been in his hands in the several key games Seattle game last week the week before he really has been something. Collins is denied the first down and the Dolphins say they got the football but too late he was already down. Brzezinski again reaching to strip that football and got his hands on it got it away from the running back. It's the second time we've seen him reach in and take that ball right out of the grasp of a running back. Coming in from the left side of your screen watch number 59. Here he comes as he gets in there he'll reach up underneath and jerk that football out of it out of the hands of Tony Collins. You see him there that's just powerful hands a linebackers in particular will work long hours on those wrists in the hands. Tony Franklin with an apparent 41 yard field goal attempt. If successful it would be a three touchdown lead for New England. It is no good wide to the left. One of the few things Dolphins fans have had to cheer about in this second half timeout 137 left in the quarter. Nothing clears my head better than a romp down a road like this. If that doesn't make sense to you then this car probably won't either. The new generation Mazda RX-7 pours out power. A remarkable story being written by the New England Patriots the long shot Pats wild card members in this Super Bowl tournament and they have a 24 to 7 lead. Time running out less than two minutes left in the third quarter. Tony Eason has thrown three very short touchdown passes one two and four yards. After the miss field goal this is Joe Carter. Whirling Gervish has about 10 more Carter running like a man possessed. Rod McSwain made the tackle after nine yards. A key to any team success how well you take it away. That's 14 in three games. They've given it up only three times. Those numbers are amazing enough but I think it's the result of those turnovers that we often don't see. We'll give you an idea of the impact of that in just a moment. Carter now with 41 yards second and short. Marino goes to the shotgun. Has to throw too soon. Duper on a deep pattern hadn't quite turned but Marina was about to get hit so had to unload. I asked Raymond Claiborne about those two wide receivers. I said are they alike to cover. He said almost identical. He said they have some of the same breakaway moves from the line some of the same moves downfield. He looked at me and said I think Nat Moore taught him all of this and he said I think he learned from Paul Warfield. Here's that break off the line. Good receivers are tough to stop at the line of scrimmage. And there's the break but Marino simply did not have time. Had he been able to wait I think Duper would have been open. Might have gotten it in there to him. Third and one and Carter does have the first down at the 35 yard line or is that Tony Nathan? Let's see if the veterans back in there. They lead by that amount 17 points directly out of those four dolphin turnovers. They have put 17 points on the board today. That is a wonder. Not only does a turnover change the emotion of the game but very often as we've seen today gives you that ideal field position. Final minute third quarter Miami won't have too many possessions. It's almost you must score every time out for Marino. Carter oh he's tough to bring down 41 yard line. He may be building himself a job for the future. Right now the future is only 15 minutes for these two teams. One will go on to the Super Bowl against Chicago. We'll be back after these messages from your local station. We're at number 73 and would be in there pacing like a lion as we were away on that last commercial break. Baumhauer out for the year with a knee injury and they hope he'll be back next season. Standing on the sideline you feel so helpless too. As Ken Sims a brilliant young defensive tackle for the Patriots must feel but it's a little easier when you're head 24-7. You see him flexing that leg and I'm sure he's thinking boy if this leg will just get a little bit better I'm going to be able to get back in there and play before this season is over. We open the fourth quarter 24 to 7 New England. It's a second and four for Marino. Going deep for Clayton. And he was well covered. Ernest Gibson was with Clayton stride for stride a reminder we will be naming our Budweiser most valuable player for today's game a bit later. You saw the results on one side of the field. Let's go to the other side of the field where Duper is working one on one little fake to the out and a little chug right there. Raymond Claiborne almost undressing Mark Duper. The official downfield did not spot that one jerked his shirt so hard the shoulder pad popped out. Patriots have been tough in the second half their defense and they've shut out Miami thus far in this one. Third and three and a half. Incomplete Tony Nathan covered well by Don Blackman and what a game Blackman has had. And I've said all along if it weren't for Tiffit this would be the man that everyone would be headlining and he's shown that today and Miami unable to pick up the first down. One of the patterns that Marino thought would be very effective against this defense is working underneath in front of those linebackers. But Blackman with great speed and good hands reaching right out in front to knock that ball away. Roland James back as Roby kicks drives the ball to the 10. Fumble Miami who has it. Dolphins. Miami had a couple of shots at it before they finally cover at the 10. And the only two mistakes by New England have been by Roland James trying to feel punts and of course an unfamiliar task for him this year. Special teams coach Dante's Garnecke was worried about this. He said there's no question James has to be rusty. We want him just to secure that football. Any yards are just a plus here. Most importantly they're giving us the football and a punt. We don't want to give it back. They've threaded a good hit Alex Moyer 54 the first man to reach in and knock that ball away. They could actually make a first down without a touchdown just by an inch or two. Marino shotgun wants to get it on the board in a hurry. Exactly what Miami had to have a five second touchdown drive denied early in this ballgame and feeling frustrated I'm sure. Tony Nathan must feel a little bit vindicated right now. Rovase try for a point. It is good and the Dolphins have cut the lead to 10 with almost a full quarter left. What a big play the fumble by James the next play Marino hits Nathan from 10. Fourteen minutes 28 seconds left. Give me a light. No no no no no Bud Light. If you just ask for a light beer. Thanks. You never know what you'll get. Give me a light. No Bud Light. So if you want the less filling light beer with the first name and taste don't just ask for a light beer. Give me a light. Ask them to bring out their best. Bud Light. Bud Light. Because everything else is just a light. Olsen and Bob Gracie at the Orange Bowl in Miami. Fumbled punt by Roland James to the Patriots recovered by Miami at the 10. A quick touchdown has put Miami back in the game and certainly the Miami fans are back in it at 24 14 with 12 minutes 47 seconds left. Miami's ball at its 37. No he trapped the ball is the call no catch. Raymond Claiborne right there on the sidelines. And Mark Clayton unable to come up with it. Great battle going on over there to experience pros looking at it from the other side of the field. We get a better view of it. Moreno with that quick throw ball down in the dirt. And I think indeed he had his hand on top of the ball and drove it into the ground. Carter. And I believe Julius Adams has it for New England. He does. The veteran. Carter who has given the extra effort throughout this game. But you had a feeling when you get hit that many times and bounce around somebody's going to finally knock it free. And Adams was the man who finally saw that precious pumpkin and the New England Patriots have it again. Again you sense not only the change of the football but the change of emotion. The ball right there begins to get away from Carter. It's on the ground Roy Foster 61 is right on top of it but it rolls out from underneath him. And there is Julius Carter or Julius Adams right there to scoop up the pumpkin. That was one of those presidents. First down at the 45. Twelve and a half minutes left. James. And Jesse Craig James from Houston Texas and Southern Methodist University trying to do something that his former teammate with the Mustangs won't get a chance to do. Go to the Super Bowl. Dickerson stopped by the Bears in Chicago earlier. I'd like to go back and make a point that I made earlier. One of the priorities that Raymond Barry said as he took over as head coach. He said we have got to take away the football more often. We're going to do that by practicing stripping the football. And oh how that has come to be a technique that's paid big dividends for the Patriots. Second and two. James. Close to a first down. That was back in the American Football League days only to lose out at Balboa Park in San Diego. Fifty one to ten to the Chargers who had just recently at that time moved from Los Angeles to San Diego. That is rather a long drought. Well sixty three may have been the year. Wasn't that the Bears last championship season. The Bears and the Patriots the last glory years were sixty three. Until 1986. James needed to get right to the 35 and that's where he was hit. It'll depend on the spot. Carter perhaps that old expression in sports stay within yourself trying to do too much and the fumble. And the sage veteran Adams who said earlier this year this would be his last that he would retire at the end of the season go to his make in Georgia home and farm and raise black Angus cattle he said but I don't want to go home too soon. They've been trying to talk him out of that retirement announcement. He has had a remarkable year. James did get the first down and with it. Usually comes about three more minutes off the clock if you're running it. Kim Bo Camper wraps up James after a yard gain at the 34. One of the loneliest feelings in the world is is the sense of of having made the costly mistake. There's Hampton talking to his young friend in the backfield saying hey you got to put it out of your mind. A lot of people have made mistakes today and indeed they have. But that was the one knock on this talented young a young runner from Alabama that he is fumble prone. It doesn't make you feel a lot better when you've made a big mistake. I can tell you that from experience. Less than 10 minutes left at Collins. Bob Brzezinski he and Don Blackman of New England the two be linebackers for each team have been absolutely outstanding in this championship game. Let's see what Raymond Barry has up his sleeve here. It's like he's got a third wide receiver on the field in this situation often during the day and during the playoffs. They have run out of that shotguns out of that shotgun formation. Let's see what they do here 920 left. New England has now rushed for 200 yards. So many men on the field for Miami has better just barely made it off. There's the play that worked against the Raiders and it pays off again today. Collins out of the shotgun. That was such a big weapon in beating the Raiders in Los Angeles last week. That particular play some confusion on the defensive side for Miami. No confusion there. They simply hand the ball off. That's Ron Wooten 61 leading a ran right past Bo Camper ran out of the attempted tackle by Blackwood and Tony Collins has a big first down. One would surmise that a touchdown here by New England would get them to this Super Bowl. A field goal should Miami stop them would keep it at least within long range of the Dolphins. James battling for a couple might have three. You'll green in on another stop. Shula knew the one problem he had all season long is the one that is shown again today. Defense versus the run. The one thing that a good running game does for you and when you can establish it the way New England has is to keep the opponent's offense on the bench. And I'll tell you one of the best defenses against Miami is to keep Marino sitting down as long as possible. Second and seven. James what a move. Craig James out of bounds at the one yard line. Everything stacked up inside and James using that great vision has a first and goal at the one. One hundred and eight yards today for James Bob Gracie talked about it earlier. The eyes James seeing the opening to the outside and then has the quickness and the acceleration to get there. William Judson getting a good tackle there look at number twenty four weathers throwing a fine block right there on fifty five. You green green must contain from the outside on that play. And that's what James saw to take advantage of it to the outside. Mozi to two. And with just seven and a half minutes late even a great quarterback on an outstanding team going to have trouble making up that deficit. It's 30 to 14. New England Patriot fans have felt all year that their team was not getting enough respect. Believe me they have earned the respect of the entire league and the entire country winning on the road against the Jets winning on the road against the Los Angeles Raiders and apparently winning here to end the last of those big jinxes. Then we'll kick it off this telecast presented by authority of the National Football League is intended for the private use of our audience any rebroadcast or other use of this telecast without the express written consent. The Miami Dolphins and the National Football League is prohibited. Dying quail. That'll be a good kick. Lorenzo Hampton. To the 20. Spend 20 years since New England has beaten Miami here in Miami and what has happened to all of us in that 20 year period of time. Prices have gone up a bit. And for the New England Patriots at average income twenty five thousand one hundred they'll make much more than that. Just in their playoff activity. Tony Eason his role limited and he's played it well like a good part player in theater. He's only thrown the safe passes he's not thrown an interception in three playoff games and he apparently is going to lead his team into the Super Bowl. But now Marino has his say. This is what it is worth. The wild card was worth New England to New England six thousand dollars then ten thousand for the win last week. Eighteen thousand dollars for each team today. That's all guaranteed up to that point. Then the winner gets thirty six and the loser 18 in the Super Bowl. So you can just accept for the six thousand the Chicago Bears have those numbers as well. But that isn't really what counts right at this point. They're they will be happy to accept those checks. But believe me the greatest joy for them here will be whipping a jinx that has docked them all. Clayton tough catch Raymond Claiborne. No that was a Marod McSwain number twenty three on him. It took a circus effort by Clayton to get those 15 yards seven minutes left in the game. Four fumbles have led to twenty four of the points. Tony Nathan just fifty yard line and fifteen more yards. And you can see how well coached this Miami team is. They are wasting no time even though there's over six minutes left. They're going to spend every second wisely. They have to. A lot of teams a little careless guys not getting up to the line of scrimmage in time. This is Nat Moore and the veteran has almost enough for another first down may have it at the 40. This makes it tough on a defense to to operate without a huddle. If the Miami team can sustain this they can wear out a defense a little bit. I know that that New England defense that New England offense they all have to be emotionally drained after the tough road games they've been through. Going for it all. He's got a man open and good rallying by Claiborne. And there's the veteran from the University of Texas showing why he's a pro bowler beaten by a step and a half. He got back and foiled the attempt by Marino. Oh you need that speed. Look at him dogging right there watching the eyes and knowing when to turn around knowing when to turn around. I think Clayton having to adjust to that football. That was the signal that he was looking for. Claiborne able to turn back and bat that football away. Miami needs three scores which obviously means three possessions and thus Marino must score on this drive. I mentioned that Marino had been held under 200 yards five times on the year twice by New England. He needs one more good pass to go over 200 today. There it is. And that'll be near another first down. Joe Rose makes the catch. Roland James with a hit 10 more yards. One thing I know about Don Shula I don't think there's a coach that I've ever been around who hates losing more than Shula. Believe me I don't I wouldn't want to be a part of the locker room and a part of the off season of a team that lost in a game that he really felt that they could win. Valathy is not successful today. His perfect record in this title game will be gone. He's five and oh coming in and that 18 game winning streak at home against New England will be gone. Here's Joe Rose again making that catch and he pays for it. Roland James tipping Rose all the way to the ground. Rose had knee or shoulder problems all of last year. He's had foot problems as we mentioned has not been practicing this week. First down at the 30 you saw the clock starts right after that measurement. Tony Nathan written down by Marion after a game of six but the clock rolls five minutes and 20 seconds left. Patriot defense has done a good job of playing within themselves. Their philosophy very simple. We keep the play in front of us. Rod Russ signaling in his defense. He said the more the closer you are to the line of scrimmage the more aggressive you can play. We don't want the highly aggressive plays way back in the secondary. Complete and there you see the result of it. You notice that the defensive backs are laying off a little bit. They'll sacrifice yardage for time here. Dooper does a wise job. No one touches him so he's able to roll out of bounds and save precious seconds. He's down but not touched and gets out of bounds and stops the clock. Right. Right play and that's something that you've got to have. You've got to save those seconds. Four fifty five left the score thirty one fourteen New England. It's going to take something special for New England not to win. But this is a special player. Clayburn that was thrown right into his midst. Not a wise throw by Marino. Clayburn good good coverage in front of Nat Moore. Dan Marino's confidence sometimes gets him in trouble. He'll throw into the coverage believing that his arm can beat the coverage. Not true here. Clayborne dropping off his man Dooper to come back in and just about take that football away from the receiver. Two receivers much closer than they should have been on that pattern that allowed Clayburn to leave his man and come in. Flags are down free play for Marino and there's Clayburn again swatting it way up into the crowd. It appeared the Patriots were offside where they drawn. I believe that Marino with that sharp barking count had drawn them off sides. Let's see if anyone on the Miami side move. Gene Barth the referee over 80 years of NFL experience in this quality crew. They've had a good game. So there is no play. It's a five yard penalty but Miami also saves it down as that's an automatically dead ball. They add four seconds to the clock. Ronnie Lee right tackle the man who apparently moved before that ball was snapped. Chicago Bears played both these teams in the regular season beating New England at Soldier Field and losing their only game of the season down here on a Monday night when Miami prevailed 38 24. Joe Rose also in the area Rod McSwain on that particular play dropping off and then coming back up to make the hit. But look how they have forced Marino to throw underneath today. He got one long pass earlier I believe to Mark Clayton everything else under 19 yards. They have forced him to go underneath to be patient and in the process have been able to force the mistakes that have given them the football. Third and 15 in a must score situation for Miami. And again, Clayburn makes the fine play on Duper. Raymond Clayburn showing his considerable skill now a flag goes down. Is it against the Dolphins? It's against Duper for throwing his helmet. He lost his cool down there. Clayburn simply made an outstanding play at the end of it. We didn't see what happened earlier but Duper is going to be penalized for throwing his helmet. And as that helmet hit the ground everything came out of it. All the padding just bounced right out of it. Boy you can't lose your cool on the field. And up 15 yards from it are number 85 offense for throwing the helmet. It is game continues after the down count. Well it's after the play the down counts. So it will be fourth and 30 for Miami. I'll tell you the other thing. How in the world is Duper going to put that helmet back on with no ear pads and no padding in it? Watch the play. At the end of the play that's what Duper was mad about. Clayton did whack him on the arm before the play. It should have been a penalty. It should have been a penalty. Now watch the hat here. He's going to throw it to the ground and that got him the penalty right there. I think the official may have been blocked from that initial swat on the arm by Duper's body. So now fourth down and Biscayne Bay to go for the Dolphins. Duper again intercepted by Claiborne. And Raymond Claiborne completes a cycle of superb coverage as he picks off the pass. The sixth turnover of the game for the Patriots. And are they hooping it up in Grand Old New England? The Patriots always a quality team. Great players and Raymond Barry has made them believe that they are what they have proved to be a great team. If you just ask for a light beer, you never know what you'll get. Blood. No, actually, blood light. So if you want the less filling light beer with the first name and taste, ask for Bud Light. Yours? No. That's everything else. Give me a light. Showtime. Bud Light. If you visited all the places some nationwide long distance companies don't serve, you'd be on the road a long time. There are a lot of services you take for granted with AT&T that most companies don't have, like calling from anywhere to anywhere, operator service, and immediate credit for wrong numbers. Looks like most companies still have a long way to go to measure up to AT&T. The more you hear, the better we sell. AT&T, the right choice. January's champions take to the ice. Ty Babylonia and Randy Gardner. The beautiful Linda Fratiani. The proto-pop-obs. And everybody's favorite, Dorothy Hamill. The gathering begins at the World Professional Figure Skating Championships on NBC Sports World. If the Super Bowl is the symbol of success and the true victory, that means that the sad part of the whole tournament is that 28 teams start and 27 finish as losers. And the frustration and the emotions will carry that through the rest of the way with 429 left. He's right. He was hit on the arm. As he explains to Coach Don Schula. Robert Weathers to the 25. A gain of five. There's the situation. That was the second game of the season. The Bears beat New England 20 to 7. And following the game, a talk with their mighty happy head coach, Mike Ditka. Oh, how well he represents what George Hallis built there in Chicago, the patriarch of the National Football League and a sensational season. Very nearly a perfect one for the Bears. Only Miami spoiled that and they've been perfect in the playoffs. How often do we see coaches who are successful build teams in their own mold? I remember well playing against Ditka in a bear uniform. Cognitious, aggressive, knock you down and talk about it later. Ditka has created that same kind of image, that same kind of feeling in the Windy City. And with back to back defensive shutouts and fine offensive performances. New England, even though they're going to be elated about a victory here, might be thinking about soon about what they're going to have to do in the Super Bowl against Chicago. Irving Fryar in a domestic scuffle earlier in the week, severing a tendon in his little finger, will not play in the Super Bowl. And many teams with a jinx, 18 straight losses and lose a player that quality was said, oh no, here it comes again. But not this edition of the Patriots. I think that's the area that we can rely on most as a successful area of very endeavor. He got them. He simply said, hey, we can overcome the obstacles. Ken Sims went down. He was playing the best football on the defense. He overcame that. Grogan went down with an injury. They overcame that. They overcame Friar's absence here today. Short yardage. I was looking through some old notes on Raymond Barry when he took the job last year. And they certainly apply. Barry said that his biggest coaching influence was his dad, Mark, there in Paris, Texas. And he said, I learned these things from my dad. Always believe you can win to convince your players of their potential. Three, insist on balance, run, pass, kick and special teams. Can you be more prophetic than that? That's exactly what he's done. Those were the words of Barry when he took the job as a so-called interim job a year and a half ago. Times being spent by Miami. They've used two timeouts now. Boy, it's so tough to see it in. And I know you can relate to that, big guy. Dick, I got awfully close to a championship day or a championship opportunity in a Super Bowl. I lost twice in championship games against the Minnesota Vikings. And I can remember the crushing hollowness of walking off of that field and realizing that it had slipped away from you. Like an artist building a big, beautiful pot and you work and work for months and months and months. Then someone comes up and drops it on you and breaks it. It's gone and there's bitterness, there's frustration. And I could look across on the other sideline and see that kind of celebration. And I was angry. I was always angry at the end of the game. Dave Rogan. You know what he's doing. He wants the Patriot fans here to get a little action of their own. You got to love him. He came back off a broken leg, put that uniform back on because he knew he might be needed. And he said, hey, I'm ready to play. Third and three and a first down with just about in things here and Weathers has got it. And there's only one time out left for Miami and the 35 Weathers who had a 45 yard run in the first half that set up a touchdown. And now it's just a matter of watching the seconds tick away and the Patriots have earned this right to celebrate on the sidelines. Well, over 10,000 people, didn't they say, waiting to meet them when they came home from Los Angeles? One has to wonder what it's going to be like when they come home from this victory. Seventy four thousand nine seventy eight were the attendance here today. About a thousand people didn't use their tickets. Some of them dolphin fans have left, but certainly not those who carry the red and blue of New England. Weathers. Well, we have a moment. Yes, let's acknowledge our Budweiser most valuable players for this championship game. Raymond Claiborne of the New England Patriots and his teammate on defense linebacker Don Blackman. Budweiser will donate one thousand dollars to the United Way on behalf of those two defensive stars for the New England Patriots. They did shut down the Miami offense and made the big plays. They are two of many that we could point to today. There's another second down and eight. Most see to to poo. He has one of the touchdowns this afternoon. That was a team that has owner Billy Sullivan. I don't think Patrick is there yet. He's our list banished to the stands after his postgame activities last week that drew a slap on the wrist. But the interview is on already and we have to twenty five left. Miami spending its final time out. To you, Beachwood age for that clean, crisp taste that says Budweiser. An idea can happen anytime. When you work for Hewlett Packard, you don't just sell business computing systems, you solve problems. When you have an idea, you do something about it. You never stop asking. What if you know that electronic mail project for the bank? What if we used H.P. message? New England, thirty one, Miami, fourteen. The head man of the team has a chance to bask in the glory as well. He's got 156 yards rushing for this Patriot offense today. Back to back games, playoff games, Miami's defense giving up too many yards on the ground. And now the Patriots will use up those 30 seconds. In fact, now it'll tick down to the two minute warning. He may be happiest of all. In fact, the younger players all saying we love Julius Adams so much that, oh, would we like to give him a chance to go to a Super Bowl? The old man's going to get his chance. Alcoa presents Fantastic Finishes. 1984, Don Shula's Dolphins are tied with the Cowboys at 21 all with just a minute forty seven seconds left. Danny Marino out of the shotgun, fires complete to Mark Clayton at midfield. Could this be Marino's record forty eight TD fast, Mark Clayton's record eight TD reception? The answer is yes. What a fantastic year for Clayton and the kid from Pittsburgh. Glad we could get together. Oh, but we better hurry. Can't miss the concert. Right. Oh, no, we save our aluminum cans for the animal shelter. They raise money by recycling. What a nice idea. Hey, what kind of dog is that? A purebred aluminum retriever. Aluminum retriever. I thought of Harry. Recycle. Buy beverages in aluminum cans. And recycle. This is Bob Costas in New York following the final guns. Stay with us for the postgame show. It's the Patriots and the Bears in the Super Bowl. Mike Ditko will join us live from Chicago. His thoughts on his second meeting of the year with New England. They played in week two. We'll also have Ahmad Rashad in the happy locker room of the New England Patriots. For the final moments, let's go back to Dick Engberg and Merlin Olson at the Orange Bowl. All right, Bob Costas. And of course, everyone around the country already starting to anticipate two weeks hence Super Bowl XX in New Orleans. And we'll be pleased and proud to bring it to you here on NBC. I'll tell you what, Raymond, we'll chip in, we'll throw in our booty here just to see you jump in the air one. Show me some emotion. Come on, you're almost going to go to the Super Bowl. His idea of getting emotional is to smile hard. I'm afraid there's not even a prayer here for these Dolphins. On fourth down, Miami will get a final chance. They don't have a single man back. Eleven men on the line of scrimmage. Camarillo is going to see all of the Miami defense on this one. And it'll just roll. Played it just right. Didn't try to spiral it end over end so he'd get the good kick down to the 14 yard line. That guy had a chance to sit down and talk to Raymond Barry and I said, are you having fun? And Raymond said, you know, he said, being the head coach in New England is kind of like being on a trip through the desert. He said most of it is hard work and it's difficult and you're out there all day long. And he said, finally, you come to an oasis and for a brief time you can drink deeply. And he said that's the great the best part of the job is those brief stops at the oasis. Well, last week there are palm trees in Los Angeles. They had that oasis there and I believe looking out here there are some palm trees right outside the stadium. I think this might be the sweetest oasis that he's stopped at so far. And I got to tell you inside, even though he's not showing us, he has to be bursting with joy. This is some man. He was a 20th round draft pick by the Colts out of SMU. Talk about overachievers. He was slow, but he worked and worked on patterns, made himself a Hall of Fame record setting receiver. Moreno short again as down he goes under pressure. Both locker rooms will get a feeling from New England and Miami as well as Mike Ditka's feelings about his victory. Another shutout today against the Rams and maybe some early thoughts on these New England Patriots. Turn it over six times. Thanks, Shula. Pretty tough to beat a good team. And New England has proved that at six rings a bell. That's exactly the number of turnovers committed by the Raiders last week. I'll say what I said then. Forced errors. They're not unforced errors. Tony Nathan using the umpire as a shield and a little backyard play. And I believe that was a forward lateral and Miami will be penalized. It was a forward pass beyond the line of scrimmage. And that's a penalty. I believe it's a planned play. Here we go forward pass, a five yard penalty. It'll be enough for a first down after the measurement. Marked off from the spot of the foul. Gracie, you know Shula best of all. What do you think we're going to hear from him in the next couple three days? I think he's going to be honest and upfront about it. He's going to say the Patriots beat him. Obviously you can't put the ball on the ground, but I think he's going to have nothing but high praise for the job that Raymond Barry did and for the Patriots. They beat him fair and square. He has a special place in his heart for Barry, doesn't he Bob? Well, and he always tells it the way it is. If he gets beat, he'll come out and say, hey, I got beat. Marino had to throw it away because Garen Veras, that talented rookie defensive end, was on top of him. Bob, a question for you. Miami has given up over 500 yards rushing in two weeks. Is Shula going to have to rebuild this defense? Well, it's the same thing he said last year after he lost the Super Bowl. He said we weren't happy with our run defense. We're going to have to do it. But it's easier said than done. You go to the draft and how do you get good players? He lost, Bamar were coming into this year and that was a big loss. Larry Gordon, too. Larry Gordon and some other defensive players. So they still have the problem. They still can't stop the run and it's still a problem that he needs to address in the offseason. Triple right formation for Miami on second and ten from their 30. Brailing 31-14. Marino forcing it low and away again. Claiborne wearing his jersey right on Mark Duper. I want to thank all of our help in the booth and Bob Greasy for joining us. Looking forward to our next step, the final championship Super Bowl in New Orleans. Two weeks from today. Andre Tippett pressuring and it goes incomplete to Carter. The Lamar Hunt championship trophy for the American Football Conference title. That will go in, well, if you'd have said back in the middle of the season, New England Patriots would be the American Football Champions, especially after two and three start. You might have to run for cover. They would want to put a straight jacket on you. But Barry has brought this team together and made them believe and they have certainly played to their talent. This is the last gasp, fourth and tenth. To Duper. Knocked away by Marion. It's New England's ball. He's been a good player for him. Fred Marion all season long. Seven interceptions didn't make the Pro Bowl. The Patriots felt very badly about that, although seven of his teammates will go to Honolulu. Three games in the playoffs against three tough teams. Tony Easton, 69 percent completions, conservative attack. Albeit five touchdowns, no intercepts. He has done exactly what Raymond Barry asked him to do. One has to wonder at how they will match up against the Chicago Bears. That's the New England locker room. You saw for a moment Chuck Sullivan, the general manager. They call him John L. Sullivan in Boston. Raymond Barry with 45 seconds left. And there was the smile we asked for. I wonder if he's ever been carried off the field. I bet there were times United has wanted to. I bet there were too. Raymond Barry, the man in that maybe most famous of all NFL games, that sudden death championship game. He caught 12 passes. You can sense even then the embarrassment, almost embarrassed by that success, but loving every minute of it. Fifteen seconds left. Shula, who coach Barry, his final five years as a Baltimore Colt, searching out his opposing coach today. It's going to be a tremendous admiration these two men have for one another. One man will be in the Hall of Fame. Shula, that man's there as a player. You see him looking for Coach Shula. There it was, the handshake between the two of them. Jackie Gleason, longtime resident of Miami and one of their favorites down here, ran into him last night. And you can almost say, away we go is the story for the New England Patriots. They're on their way to New Orleans. The deck we set at the beginning of the broadcast, it was like a winner-take-all poker game. And indeed, the New England Patriots go home with all the chips. They played their cards well. Lexington and Concord and Brockton and Foxborough and Boston and the fans who have supported this team and know the other end of the emotion. Today they can cheer with the New England Patriots. New England, champions of the American Football Conference. A good idea by itself may go nowhere. It needs other good ideas. Technology from a company called TRW makes the most of ideas by helping them work together. And working together is the best idea in the world. Tomorrow is taking shape at a company called TRW. What's this tough guy? After-aftershave skin conditioner. I know, I thought I was the only guy with sensitive skin. Every time I shave, I get it right here. What do you fellas use? Because shaving irritates my whole face. After, try it. Looks different. It's rich. It's a lotion. After soothes razor-scrape sensitive skin. Hey, this feels great. And smells good too. Terrific. Sensible care for sensitive skin. After-aftershave skin conditioner. So the Super Bowl matchup is set. We'll see it two weeks from today, January 26th from the Super Dome in New Orleans on NBC. It begins with our pregame show at 3 Eastern Time. Super Bowl XX, an American celebration. The kickoff between the Patriots and the Bears shortly after 5 o'clock with Dick Enberg and Merlin Olsen. 31-14, New England ending all kinds of streaks. They go to the Super Bowl as a wild card team. Only one wild card team has ever won it. That was the Raiders a few years back. They also accomplished it in New Orleans. They end the long winning streak of the Dolphins at 8 and they snap the Jinx that had gone back to 1966. They lost 18 in a row at the Orange Bowl. Not today. They dominated, taking the ball away from the Dolphins six times. Earlier today at Soldier Field in Chicago, the Bears fulfilled their destiny. They are in the Super Bowl. 24-0 over the Rams. It's the fourth shutout of the year for the Bears. And remarkably, in 18 games, they have held the opposition to 10 points or less 13 times. Let's go to Mike Ditko who is standing by in Chicago. Mike, first of all, congratulations and some thoughts on the New England Patriots, your opponent now in the Super Bowl. Well, Bob, thank you. It's great to play the Patriots. We played them the second game of the season and we thought at that time they were the best football team we had seen on film coming out of the exhibition season defensively. And I think what Ray's done there is tremendous. They're a good football team with great balance and I think they play the game the way it's supposed to be played. They don't do anything really spectacular. They just do what it takes to beat you and I think that's a credit to him and his coaching staff. Obviously, they hadn't hit their stride in week two when you played them, but you dominated them winning 20-7 and it wasn't that close. Six sacks, four takeaways. Well, I think we caught them off balance. I think it'll be a lot different football game this time. I think their running game is much different than it was earlier. And I think, you know, the maturity of Tony Easton, the quarterback, has really helped him. He's done a great job for them and they really deserve to be there. I really feel that they're the best team in the American Football Conference. I'm sure that makes a lot of people mad, but that's what I feel. There were some skeptics who said two-thirds of the way through the season the Bears peaked and they were ripe to be taken in the playoffs. No sign of that with the back-to-back shutouts. Well, you don't know. You have to look hard and long to find those skeptics anymore, don't you? Do you feel right now at this point that you are at your ultimate peak or was there any time during the season when the Bears were playing better football? I think we can play better on offense. I don't think we played well enough on offense today. We had a great output from our quarterback and our receivers, but we didn't do a good enough job in the running game. We must rush to football better if we're going to be successful. But our defense has really played exceptional football. We've had, you know, 11, 12, 13 guys on defense who have really gone out there and played hard. And I think what Buddy has done with the different schemes on defense is confuse some people and he's put a tremendous amount of pressure on the opposition. So it's just a matter of we can take something away from them and we can play them all tough. Last question. Would it be fair to say there's a little bit of electricity and excitement around Chicago tonight? It's a great city and it deserves what's happening right now and hopefully we can carry it all the way through. Mike, thanks very much. We'll see you in New Orleans. The sound you hear in the background comes from the Patriot locker room. Let's go back down to the Orange Bowl. All right, Bobby, in a happy locker room, the New England Patriots have done it. Now for the presentation for the AFC championship trophy by Lamar Hunt. Lamar? I'm a thanks. In 1960, the Patriots joined seven other renegades to form the American Football League. And now 26 years later, that championship day has come for the Patriots. The last of those original eight, Bill, to win a championship of the Old Americans. And I think so highly of this man. He's the guy that was the father of it. He nurtured it. He kept it alive all through the years. And it gives me a fantastic pleasure to present the AFC championship trophy to Bill Sullivan, to my friend Raymond Barry, and to the New England Patriots. Congratulations, Bill. Thank you. Congratulations, Mr. Sullivan. He had to be just a gratifying year for you this year. I must say this, that if there's a happier man in the world than I, I don't know who he is. And I must thank God for all of his blessings, but particularly for bringing Raymond Barry, the loyalty of our fans, the loyalty of our family. Twenty-seven years old, Lamar Hunt founded the American Football League. And 27 years ago, he said, if you will have a $25,000 check on deposit at the Mercantile Trust Bank in Dallas by the close of business Tuesday, you own the eighth franchise. I had $8,300 bucks to my name. I wasn't a football player. And I borrowed the rest, and we got the money there. And Lamar, it's very appropriate that you should present this, because if anyone represents the success of the league, it's a guy named Lamar Hunt. All right, congratulations. Raymond, it just seems to me that it doesn't matter where you guys play. You've been on the road three weeks and you just keep turning it up. It's hard to believe this is all happening. We thought we could do it, but when it happens, it's still hard to believe. We have so much to be thankful for. For Mr. Sullivan and Pat and Dick Steinberg, who get all these players here, and our coaches, and our football team, and our fans. It's hard to believe it's happened. You've come a long way. About a year and a half ago, this team was in disarray. You came in, everything settled down. A lot of confidence on this team now. Yeah, they have played up to their capabilities. And I felt like, I told them yesterday, all I was concerned about was playing like they can play. And I thought things would be all right. I think they played pretty good. If they keep doing that, you'll have a Super Bowl trophy. All right, let's go upstairs to Dick Merlin and Bob. Congratulations to Ray Berry. That's the kind of offense you used to run. Twelve passes for Easton, one, two, and four-yard touchdown passes. They may not be able to do that against the Bears. The Bears are the number one team in the National Football League against the run. So it's going to be interesting to see what they come up with. They're going to make Easton throw longer than those one, two, and four-yard touchdowns. What were your impressions, and how do you feel New England will stack up against that Bear defense? Well, I think Papa Bear Hallis looking down from somewhere, and Coach Lombardi looking down has to be pleased, have to be pleased. Running game and great defense, those are the name of the game for the coming Super Bowl. And these are two teams that have done it best during the year. Traditional football at its best, and I think we can look forward to New Orleans. Gee, if we only could have a contrast in coaches' personality going into the Super Bowl, it'll be Mike Dicka and Raymond Berry, two former assistant coaches under Tom Landry. The Dallas Cowboys will meet two weeks from now in New Orleans, and we go to New York and Bob Costas. All right, Dick, thanks very much, and we'll see you all in New Orleans. Quickly, Axe, the early line, Bears and Patriots. Bears will be favored between nine and ten points. They will be because you think that's what the line is likely to be out of Vegas, or because you think that's about right yourself? That's what the line will be out of Vegas, and that's about right. Now, thankfully we have two weeks to work on this, though, and figure out which side is going to be the right side. All right, Pete, we'll see you on Bourbon Street.
