Dad could be under attack, they could be being hurt, and the people who are going to save the family won't be mom and dad, probably. It'll probably be you, Mike, Megan, or Matt. Little Mary Rose and your other littler sister, they need help to get out. But the bravest thing to do and the most important thing for your family would be for you to get to a neighbor, a safety neighbor. Sanford takes this family from room to room, showing them how to escape. In the bathroom, there's no place to get out, so you wouldn't run in here because you don't want to hide, you want to get out. Are we all in agreement that there's only one place out right here? Sanford has given this family an escape plan. They are now ready to practice. Let's pretend it's around one o'clock in the morning. Mike, you and Matt are going to be in your bedroom, and little Mary Rose and the other little girls will be in the other bedroom. Alright, so Mike, you're going to go out this one, that would be your first choice. Matt, you're going to go out that one, that's your first choice. Plus, over there's the neighbor's house over there. Sanford plays the bad guy attacking mom. Shut up! Shut up! Shut up! Shut up! Shut up! Shut up! Shut up! Is all of this too heavy for kids? No. Not when you consider that what you really want most in your life as a parent and for your children is for them to not just be happy and secure, but to be able to survive a crisis. Was it enlightening for you? Yeah, the kids, was it enlightening for you? It was kind of strong, you know, when he first came, I thought, oh, I don't know. But I had thought about that before, because we just moved our, our bedroom used to be in very close proximity of theirs. And now we just moved our basement into the basement, and I told Sanford that that was a concern. What if they come in, we're in a raised ranch, so if they kick in the basement window and they come in, they might surprise, we might surprise them as much as they surprise us, because we're in the basement now. But what if they go in for the, Sanford's, they always go for the adults first. So if they go up in their bedroom, they're going to find all the kids up there. So it was really helpful to know that he walked through every room and talked to the kids. Bottom line, moms and dads face facts. You are not going to be able to save your children. They'll probably save you because intruders will go for adults. You're going to have your hands full. You're going to be injured. You're not going to be able to save that precious child of yours. We have to take a break. We'll be right back. Hey, Sparky, how you doing? Oh, you flied it. And powder, too. You poor dog. Henry, time for your flea control. See you later, man. Claire! On Home Improvement. Wednesday, evening at 7. So one of the fears, I know we talked about this once before, and women have this, they often submit themselves or don't put up a fight because they freeze up. They also are afraid of being hurt. Yes. And so you're saying, are you both saying too, just give up the fear of being hurt. You may be hurt. You have to become angry. So many people don't become angry and they should get angry. You know, why should someone be coming into my home? My house, yes. Yes, and trying to hurt me. You've got to build up that anger and try and turn that fear into anger and fight. Because a lot of these guys are very fearful when they walk in because they don't know about the victims. And if you have the strength to fight back, oftentimes you'll be the victor, not the victim. When you got kids, lady, when that man had a knife to my neck, he threatened my children that were sleeping in the next room. You don't have time to do anything but react. You can't respond back. Oprah hit it on the nail. I can't fight. Oprah hit it on the... I was prepared. I was so prepared. You weren't prepared because you hadn't thought it out. I was molested when I was 13 also. So I knew about intrusions. I knew, and I prepared my kids for fire. But when he attacked me in my bedroom, there was no way. I knew I had a statue. I was so prepared. I was going to go into the fight mode and protect myself and stay alive out of the thing. But I'll tell you what, when you're actually in that situation, when he's got that knife to your neck, threatening your kids, and it's 6 o'clock in the morning, you're not even awake... What I'm telling you is that your mom's instincts are going to be there, but you're going to be controlled. You won't be able to get away to save your baby. So if your child is 4 years old and up, they're old enough to go to kindergarten. In most states, they're old enough to start hearing about fire escape. They're old enough to start you beginning to go within our escape plan. In my situation, I did what I needed to do to survive. Okay? That's the bottom line, too. Oprah said the whole point of the show is to get you to think. What she's telling you is this, the whole point of learning how to protect yourself, survival mindset, as I teach and wrote in my book, is this. Look at what other people have done. Rather than just take it in as tragedy, use this show as a learning tool. Make your decision about what you've heard people have done and say to yourself, I will do it the same way or I will do it differently. If you want it to end differently for you, you must decide, I have to do something differently. You know what else is important to know, that there could be an element of surprise on your side. Right, absolutely. That you might have to submit for a while, but then there could be an opportunity for you to take control of the situation. Afterwards, we're after the rape, and knowing that, you know, everybody asks, well, did you fight him? Well, I felt like an idiot. I felt like, God, I succumbed to this man because I panicked. But I didn't panic, and I know that. The whole point is this, not to make any woman who has ever been raped to feel guilty about the fact that it happened to her. The fact that you came out alive means that you were victorious. You understand? Yes. That's right. And so, if in your case, submission is what worked and kept you alive, then that was what you needed to do. That was what you needed to do. Yes, people don't realize that. People realize that, okay? When we come back, if you or anyone you care about lives in an apartment or condo, you must stay tuned for our next segment. Sanford's going to show us the hidden danger areas in apartment buildings where criminals can lurk. But first, Detective J.J. Bindenbinder gives us another great tip. Back in a moment. So, Sanford took us on a tour through a typical apartment complex to show us some potential danger zones. This will scare you. Nice apartment building downtown Chicago. Looks safe. You'd probably feel safe. And the first mistake you'd make is you'd look at this fence and you'd say, Fence, people can't get in. I feel fairly protected. The bottom line is, the people who are criminals, the ones who will come after you and looking for you, they'll hop this fence and be open in a second. I could even get over this fence. Let's go to the door. And the first thing I want to mention to you is that I'm not going to use the key to get in here. I'm going to use one of these bobs. The bottom line is it's one step up from the key. That's all. You see that security camera up there, folks? I want you to remember something about security cameras. Make sure it's maintained and working. It's a good help. We're inside the building. You see that mirror right up there? If you take a look at that mirror, you can see quite well if anyone's there. Look at it. Use it. It's meant for your security. And if someone's there, wait for them. What's two or three seconds? The majority of people, I'll bet you two, come over. They push this, and then they sit here and wait just like this. They don't bother to pay any attention to what's up that area right there. Or they don't have any idea that someone's back there. And then someone comes around, they get into the elevator like this, and then someone comes around and follows them in, and they don't listen to their gut. I've asked the crew to follow me into here because it's a little area off to the side that I looked at, and I thought, well, my gut just told me something could be awry here. It's not safe to me. I first walked by this door myself. I looked at this lock, and I thought, oh, okay, it's just an outside door lock. I pushed on it. This door opens to the outside. This door opens up with nothing, just a push. Right over there, there's a fence. Anyone could hop that fence, any crook. Folks, this is the raping scene waiting to happen. Laundry room notorious in all of Portland buildings for crime scenes. Over here, you see, the crook doesn't have to be hiding. He doesn't have to be lurking somewhere in another building or close by watching. He can be right here doing the laundry himself or pretending to be. He can make conversation. If she leaves, he knows exactly whether she's coming back or not. He can make a decision to wait till she comes back to make his hit or make his hit right now. Car crimes. And I'm telling you flat out, the most dangerous zone of them all is the parking lot where we are right now. If you're a woman, more than likely, they'll also decide to kidnap you. It's highly likely. Push you into the middle. You've got one last chance, folks, to crash that car. Whoa. Crash the car? Crash that car. Crash the car. And this is why. They get you into that car, they put a gun to your head, or they force you to drive. They got you in there. They're taking you somewhere else. You're leaving crime scene number one. First contact, folks. You're going to crime scene number two.
