You would vote for him on pro-choice, but the people are still homeless in the streets, according to you. Really. Well, I mean, that's a bigger issue about freedom and the American way. Okay. And so you made your decision for Dukakis based on? I think the sincerity that comes across in the man, I think he comes across as a much more honest candidate than Mr. Bush. Uh-huh. No way. No way, Bill. Why? Oh, I think George Bush is an extremely qualified man to run for president, and I think the most qualified ever. And what do you base that on? Oh, it's history of being in the Congress. Oh, no, because he's a Republican. Well, that helps. That helps. Only because he's a Republican. The head of the CIA and the Vice President, of course, in the last eight years. And he's done such a good job. Okay. And so you feel that she's all wrong. She's all wrong. Well, certainly. Okay. Have you both always been staunch Republicans? I thought so. And so all of a sudden this year, what was it about Mr. Bush that changed your mind? If you've been a staunch Republican all of your life and all of a sudden this year, 88, you changed your mind, Louise, why? I just don't think he comes across as the candidate that I'd like to support. I think there have been a lot of small issues that have surfaced. I'm not sure either candidate is just my ideal final choice. I don't like the way the media has handled some of it, but I have to look at both gentlemen. And somehow Bush just has made a lot of mistakes. I mean, he's not even sure when Pearl Harbor was, you know, I mean, you know, what can you do? How can you have a confidence in a man that makes so many small mistakes? You wonder when it's the big one gonna, gonna fall. And couples divided on the debate. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. The following commercial was made by California school kids for proposition 98. Hey, we're out of time, Deborah, see if the custodian has a folding chair. Take a moment to think about what it would be like to be in our shoes, because then you'll vote yes on proposition 98. The woman's day starts, it never stops, which may be one reason women suffer from constipation. In fact, they're constipated three times more often than men. Fortunately, there's today's correct all its special formula combines a mild laxative with a softening agent to work gently, work effectively overnight to help you feel like yourself again. Today's correct all works gently, works effectively. One paper towel really asks for it because it's tall enough to take Viva. Viva looks, acts and feels so much like cloth, it begs to be worked over. Don't tear it, don't spare it, let me prove that it's the one for you. Viva, towel enough to take it. Remember your last insurance bill, how high it was. That's why you gotta vote no on proposition 104, the insurance industry scheme. Remember proposition 104, the insurance industry plan to punish good drivers and reward bad ones. Don't forget it. Prop 104, write it down, Prop 104, bad news for good drivers. No on 104, the insurance industry scam. We got their number. So we're talking today to couples who are divided over the election. Is it true that Margie, you told Mark that Reagan was a liar and he said that he's lying about all the right things? Right. I said, how can you listen to him talk like that? You know he's lying. It was about the Contra issue or whatever and he said, yeah, but he's lying for all the right reasons. That's a typical democratic twisting of the truth. What did you say, Mark? What did you say? I said that there was a matter of national security and that we'll never know and I don't believe we'll ever know for many, many years what really happened and that if there was some changing of some facts or some covering up of some things for security reasons, that that's a valid, it's a valid reason for the voters. I could tell that kind of ticked off a bit. I think that lying about that, Nixon definitely did not get away with it, none of his administration did and now all of a sudden Reagan and Bush, it's okay to lie. It's okay to sell arms to people that have taken people hostage, American people hostage. Now they're our buddies. It's like Noriega was our buddy, oh, but now we don't like him anymore. Say no to drugs. Say yes to Noriega. Jeff and Paula, you all are just living together right now. That's correct. Don't tell my mother, okay? I will not tell her. Thank you. Is it a source of great discussion? No, show vote is basically how I express her to vote. No. This man thinks that he needs to form, this is the first time I'm voting, I'm 22. I love America, vote Bush person and from everything that I've heard from him and on the media and watching the debates, I've decided that I'm going to vote Democrat. So he says that that's the end of the relationship if I vote Democrat. So Marjorie and I, we're moving in together. The government subsidized housing. Why are you a staunch Republican? And I want to ask all of you who are voting Republican, particularly you, Bill. You've been a staunch Republican for all your life? Yes. And so does it not matter who the candidate is, as long as the candidate is Republican, you vote for them? It doesn't matter. Oh, it matters, but I believe in the Republican philosophy, yes. Okay, so, okay, that's sort of like a double answer there, Bill. You believe in the Republican philosophy, so in your opinion, the Republicans are always going to have the best man. That's correct. Okay. And you feel the same way, Jeff? Basically, I'm a product of the Reagan generation. As far as Reagan was in president, I voted for both terms. And I'd like to carry that on, because it's increased my spending power, et cetera, my job security, et cetera. I'd like to see that continue. Let's talk about the wives of. Are you influenced in any way to vote for a candidate based on his mate? Louise? I think Oprah, we do a lot of talking about politics in our home, obviously, and a lot of heavy-heated discussions. And I appreciate Bill's opinion. I listen, but I'm going to make up my own mind. Just what he has said and what Jeff said down here, that just because they're Republicans, and they always vote Republican, Bill's father, his grandfather, they're all Republicans. And I say it's got to go beyond that, that our country needs to, we need to look as a voter. We need to look at candidates, whether it's for the office of president or right down to council people, whoever. We need to look at the individual, not which party. What are they going to do? What are they going to do? I asked a question about the candidates' mates. Are you influenced at all by Mrs. Bush or Mrs. Dukakis or Mrs. Quayle? I think most definitely that I think Kitty Dukakis is one that I would be proud to have as the First Lady in the White House. I think she is outstanding. I listened to an interview yesterday that she was on Face the Nation. She came across as a very intelligent, informed... Does that mean you don't think Mrs. Bush is intelligent? I think if I look at both the candidates' wives, I'd have to say that I think Kitty Dukakis could represent our country much better as a First Lady. And the reason is? And the reason is? I think, you know, First Ladies are not paid and it's kind of, they're in the background, but I believe they are just very important to our country. We've seen it in the Russians when we're debating back and forth and having these conferences. And I really, I have to look at both women. I have to look at the families. I have to look at relationships. I feel that is a stronger relationship. She is a stronger person, I feel, as far as coming across to generally to the public. This woman is skeptical. I can't believe she's saying that. What were you saying? Yes? Yes? Well, you haven't said one bad thing about Barbara Bush. It's like Barbara Bush doesn't exist at all. How can you stand there and say that, you know, Barbara Bush isn't a strong woman, but Kitty is? I mean, Barbara's had her share of problems, you know, through her life, and she's been really supportive of George. I don't see anything wrong with her. I think that she's just as qualified. I can't see that there's been that much information given that Kitty Dukakis stands out so much more than Barbara Bush does. I think Kitty Dukakis shows me a First Lady, if she becomes a First Lady, that I would not have any regard for, because she doesn't seem to have regard for herself. Anytime her husband can get on national TV and say he would not properly defend his wife if she were raped and brutalized. Did he say that? He said that during the debate? Yes, he did. Because he said he would not feel for the death penalty. And I also interpreted that way, and I don't think a lot of other people interpreted it that way. You did. I significantly did. I also wonder about a woman that accepts a toaster from a rich man on Valentine's Day and says that's great. I wonder about that. Is that real? Maybe she's the kind of woman who doesn't want a lot or expect a lot, so what's wrong with a toaster? I just question the reality and sincerity of that, and is it for real? I'm not saying that it's wrong to accept that. I'm saying I just question that kind of sincerity. It doesn't even sound real. This man is a rich man. But don't you relate more to a person who gets a toaster on Valentine's Day than you relate to the wives of the Republican Party who walk around with all their faces closed? Who said no? Who said no? Who said no? She said no. I do not want a toaster. No, I totally disagree. Why should you relate more? Because a wife would get a toaster on Valentine's Day versus one who would get an outfit. Personally, I can't relate to it. It's the quality of a person, not necessarily the gift. But to add to me, line yourself up with someone. You know, I'm a Republican. I'm a black Republican. As a matter of fact, I'm a black elected official in the city of Chicago. But I look at people. I do not look at parties. And especially as a minority, I find this very insulting to the extent, you know, you're not right because you're Democrats. You're not right for your Republican. You should start looking at individuals. That's what's wrong with the country today. All right. Back in a moment. Back in a moment. The delicious taste of Stouffer's fresh bread pizza, explained by my brother Dick. You get plenty of pepperoni, cheese, all the good things. Say it. Say, say, help yourself to Stouffer's pizza. Help yourself to Stouffer's pizza. Thank you very much. I appreciate it. Help yourself to Stouffer's pizza. What's the easiest way to top a salad with Velveeta? Try Velveeta shreds. Easy-to-use shreds of the great Velveeta taste no other shreds can match. That's Velveeta shreds. Original or Mexican. What's this? Huh? Oh, it's nothing. Nothing? No. OK, it's a game, a jenga. But how do you play? You take a piece off the bottom, you put it on the top, but don't. Don't. Eat, talk, circulate. Don't play the game. Come on, Charlie, you've got the fastest hands in the room. Food! Careful. That's the best move I've come to make all my time. Jenga. Once you touch it, you can't keep your hands off it. Hi, I'm Elliot Gould, and I'm standing beside Jenny Craig, a woman who has helped me to eat better than I ever have before. Thanks, Elliot. Only Rilt has sponge wraps that grip like ordinary and papers can't for smoother, quicker roll-ups. Limp. Do a beautiful, easy hair, huh? Yeah, you say what? What are you screaming about? I mean, what have the Republicans done for the education? When Reagan stepped into office, he wanted to blatantly get rid of the educational system altogether. But he realized he couldn't. So he wanted to get rid of the entire educational system? I mean, the educational system has been cut. The energy system has been cut. And I mean, you have to look at the person. You cannot say just because the Democrats said, well, we're sure of the black vote, that you are going to stick with the Republicans just because of that. That is absolutely ridiculous. You say that you can't blame that. Part of that deals with local politics. The federal government issues money to the local governments. What do you have in Chicago and Cook County? For 45 years, the Democrats have run and controlled the entire city, and it's getting worse. And you want to tell me that the Republicans are responsible for that? Go look at the country. Look at the country, OK? When we look at the country and we look at foreign affairs, OK? We talk about experience in foreign affairs. Reagan didn't have much experience. And we have Bush here, a CIA person here, with his covert operations. I mean, that's pretty scary. We still don't know what's going on with the Iran-Contra scandal. He hasn't let up much. You know, you're talking education. You want to go to defense. Don't tell me about defense when you don't want to defend our country. We have never been a ravaged, torn country. And if the, if the communists get into South America, do you know that a missile could hit Chicago in 30 seconds? Dukakis has not said that he is against those things. They're supporting me and my family. I like America. And I like not having to duck a bomb every second or so. Yeah. I find it strange that the minorities would be doing the most arguing for the simple reason we caught fall short on a lot of things. Our support is taken as a rubber stamp for a lot of these candidates. We ought to stop and start looking at individuals. And I still say it's individuals. And personally, how I relate is my personal opinion. But blacks as a whole should start looking at individual candidates versus parties. How can you be a black Republican? How can you be a first Democrat? We were Republicans first, ma'am. You said Abraham Lincoln was a Republican. You said Abraham Lincoln was a Republican. Blood was shared during the Civil War. But Republican blood was shared for blacks and not Democrats. So get your history down. All he wanted to do was migrate us. Okay, that's all we've seen. Freedom doesn't come cheap, but we're still free. You know what? Like I say, I am not arguing with you. Wait a minute. One at a time. One at a time. One at a time. One at a time. Now you asked her how can she be black and be a Republican. I would like to know that. How can you be a black Republican? First of all, why not be a black Republican? Why let me be rubber stamped by the Democratic Party? For however, whoever best serves the needs of the people I represent is who I am not concerned about. Wait a minute. Now she is going to speak. I'm a black Republican. As a matter of fact, I am also a candidate. Let me tell you one thing. You are not going to put me in my pocket and the Democrats, Jesse Jackson, all over the papers this weekend. I guarantee black support for Dukakis. You cannot guarantee my vote. I am an individual. I have the right to choose. I do not need your permission to make my own decision. I don't need your permission. How can you sit here and ask us how we can be black Republicans? Especially after Jesse was treated the way he was on the ticket. Alright, I'm moving on. Yes, yes, yes. Let me get back to her question on education. Governor Thompson downstate, the Republican, took the money away from the city of Chicago. Not the Democrats, okay? Ronald Reagan cut back funds. That's the truth. The city of Chicago gets less money back than they put in. The lottery money that comes out of the city stays downstate. That's a fact. The city of Chicago gets $0.89 and gets back $1.20. They get more than any other group in the Illinois district. Okay, yes, yes, yes. I think anybody has a right to be what they want to be, whether you're black, white, purple. And I think every American. And I agree with the Republican, although I don't often, when she says that we should look at individuals, and if we look at individuals, I can't see how any decent person can now vote for George Bush. That's right. I want to tell you that I just turned 75 years. I voted for Republicans in my life. I voted for Senator Percy. I voted for others in my time. But I have never in all these years seen a campaign as dirty as Bush and Quayle have made this campaign. No, it's not both sides. I really and truly hope that I haven't lived so long that I can see the policies of sleaze coming to the White House. We once had a Watergate. Please be polite. We had a Watergate under the Republicans. We had Comforgate. And now we have Shanegate under Bush and Quayle. Yes, ma'am, yes, ma'am. You say what? Yes, yes. I would like to answer those ladies down there. The reason why I don't understand you voting for Republicans, if you look at the promos as Bush, you'd think the country had nothing but whites in this country. Why are you black Republicans? Why are you black Republicans? You as black just rubber-stamps the images. You start looking at local people and what they stand for for the whole country versus just lining up and saying, you're a black Democrat. Excuse me, Vidoliak is not the Republican Party. Would you please answer my question? I did already, ma'am. Why isn't he Republican? Not because I stood up and said I'm for Bush or the cops, not once. I'm more about local politics and what they concern here in the city of Chicago versus what's happening with the Bush or the cops. What I'm saying here is we've got all jumping up and down. Would you come up here? Would you come up here? I have no problem. I understand we're all jumping up and down about what's going on nationally. If we do not educate ourselves and start dealing more so on a local level and make these politicians on a local level more accountable, we're blowing in the wind. I agree with you on that. I agree with you on that, and I am a person that changes my vote. I'm not strictly for anyone. I am for the goods of this country, and I don't think that Mr. Bush has this country in his heart. And when it comes to black people in this country, I have not seen one black person in his commercials. I do not totally agree with anyone. America is completely white. Excuse me, ma'am. Well, hold on. Even if I don't? What I'm saying is it is not—you made me lose my train of thought— I am still definitely dealing with individuals. I do not agree with anyone, let it be Dukakis or Bush, 100 percent. You get certain issues, and you align yourself with that. It is not 100 percent this and 100 percent that. I agree. You know, it's adamantly that certain people are for Bush and certain are for Dukakis, but no one deserves blind support. You say what? Yes, ma'am? I think the problem is the educational process, which we have not taken the initiative and responsibility to educate ourselves on politics. Most of us do not know who spends the money. It's not Bush. It's not going to be Dukakis or Bush. It's going to be your Congress. And that's democratic. And they're the ones that's not making sure that people aren't fed. They are the ones that are spending their money for other special pet projects instead of making sure hungry are fed. They're also the ones who take that education dollar that you say that Mr. Reagan has cut back, and no, he has not cut it back. It is your Congress who has affected that. Back in a moment. Back in a moment. Why is he bouncing around like it's a great morning anyway? Well, I'm so tired and cranky and headachy, I can't even get started. Why? Because last night when he said, let's take Nyquil so we can have a good morning, I said, why? What's the nighttime stifling, sneezing, coughing, achy, scuffy head fever so you can rest medicine? Got to do with morning, silly. He took it. I took these. Quiet! Nyquil. It's also the bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, fully rested, so take it at night and have a good morning medicine. Hello, caller, hi. Hi, good morning. Morning. Your show is really interesting to me because I broke up with my girlfriend about a month ago because she was voting for George Bush. Yeah! I couldn't understand how a woman could vote for Bush. And when we were on our way to dinner on our first date, we were getting out of the car, going into a restaurant, and she said that she was voting for Bush. We had just started talking about politics. I just stopped in my tracks when I said, I'm sorry, you cannot go to dinner. I just wanted to go back in the car and call it off, you know? So that sort of was like foreshadowing that the relationship wasn't going to work out. Oh, really? Yeah. Oh, yeah. So you didn't think it was something you could kind of talk through? I really like her, and we did try to work through it, and we ended up putting a moratorium on talking politics. But that didn't work because one day we came home, and she turned on the TV and wanted to watch the Republican convention. And she was getting all excited about the Republican convention, and it was making me crazy. I was like, this is really annoying me. Marge, you're shaking your head because you lifted. It's hard. We were talking about it yesterday just before the show, and I realized it's hard. I mean, all kidding aside, it's hard for me to realize that the issues that are so important to me, that people are hungry and that the education doesn't matter, that they don't matter to Marge, that he's more concerned with the country prospering and the government prospering and the military prospering. And it's hard to realize that I'm living with and sleeping next to a man who doesn't care that people are hungry. He doesn't care. Oh, he's putting food on the table. Can I give that response? Yes, Marge, yes. It's, I don't care one little iota less than you do. I feel I care more because I educate myself. But I just feel that I know of a better way to solve these problems than you know. And that's through strength. That's correct, Marge. What concerns me is that I think that there's a perception, a misperception that the Democrats are bad for the economy. And I think as a result of that, there's this willingness to accept a certain amount of lack of integrity in the Republicans. And the reason I say that that's a misperception is that the stock market since World War II has increased more under Democratic administrations than under Republican administrations. Secondly, the primary impact in the 1980s on the economy has been nothing that the Republican administration has done. It's been the low oil prices. As we've seen in the 70s, if we go back to the 70s, we had two OPEC oil shocks. And these were the primary impact on the economy back in the 70s. In the 80s, we've had very low oil prices. As the people in the Southwest will tell you, that's the biggest impact and the negative impact on their economy and the largest impact on the positive impact on the rest of the country. You say what? Yes, sir, yes, sir. I have two words to respond to that. Jimmy Carter. I think that explains a lot. It was basically weak, ineffectual leadership. And, you know, when you do caucus, I'm afraid it's going to be exactly the same thing. He's going to bring in the same crowd, basically liberal. And I don't know why he runs from the label. It's like Goldwater saying, I'm not a conservative. And it's that weakness that I'm afraid is going to come back, if he becomes president, and it rubs off and it affects things. Yes. I want to know why you think the Republicans haven't done anything for the economy. By cutting taxes, they've been able to let businesses invest more money in their workers and produce more goods. Our imports are up since Carter's been in office. Our imports are higher than they've been in almost 40 years by a percentage. The country hasn't been sold to other foreign nations. 5.6 percent of our total net worth is owned by foreign nations. Not all of it. Very, very little of it. Yes. You know, my concern today, I have a friend who needs a liver transplant. And national health care is a very important issue. We have about 300 people needing a liver transplant. And in order to get this transplant, you've got to have money. We're talking about $200,000. So what does the government say? Let them die? My position is, let's find out. If those companies are growing, then give those people who work health insurance. It doesn't make sense. They're lining up pockets more than that. You have more people in a man today than ever before in this history that are employed and working, but there's no health care. Yeah. I've got to go to break. I've got to go to break. I've got to go to break. Back in a moment. Should your child have imaginary friends? Some theories say they help your kids by giving them a sense of control. Other theories claim that every time your kid wants to go to the movie, you may have to pay for an invisible friend. Well, theories come and theories go. But I say, give your kids lots of love. Some fruity jello gelatin. That's forever. May I have some? It must be a dream. Pancakes and syrup for under 200 calories? Impossible. Aunt Shemima? Now there's Aunt Shemima light pancakes with her light syrup for under 200 calories, and they taste too good to be light. It is a dream come true. Proposition 99 is very simple. It adds a 25 cent tax to each pack of cigarettes sold in California. Here is where the money will go to educate children to the dangers of smoking, to fund tobacco related research, to prevent forest fires and repair the damage they cause, and to provide health care for those who cannot afford it. Vote yes on Proposition 99. It is a healthy proposition. The election is just two weeks away, and there are polls that show that many people are frustrated, fed up with both candidates to the point of not even wanting to vote. My next guests have made that decision not to vote this election for either party because they don't believe in either Bush or Dukakis. First, I'd like you to meet Pam, who says she really likes to vote, but feels that this time around there isn't anyone or anything to vote for. She says she's sick of the two candidates making fools of themselves with their TV commercials and debates. Next, meet Norma, who says she refuses to waste her time voting for either candidate. As a single mother, she disagrees with Republican philosophies, concerned with their lack of care for the less fortunate, but says the Dukakis might get too liberal and let homosexuals take over the country. She doesn't feel that either man is worth her time. My next guest was born and raised a Republican, but for the first time, he disagrees with George Bush, won't vote for his party. In a recent talk with his mother, she told him to do the right thing and vote Republican, even if he doesn't love Bush. He says it's not right for him to do that. He probably won't vote this election and is disappointed with his choices for President Dominic. And my next guest, Mia, who can't agree with either candidate because they aren't making any decisions or addressing the real issue, she says that she's looking for a president who will do something more than make personal insults against the opposition. Welcome my guest to the show. There are a lot of people. And I'll start with Norma and Mia. I'm trying to remain totally unbiased during this show, but I will start with you all because, as black people in this country, I just find it difficult to believe that you're not going to vote for somebody since so many of our people died for the right to vote. I can't believe it. So you have to address that issue for me first. Well, I guess basically I feel that who am I being true to first, myself or my country? I don't want to be a hypocrite and go in there and not vote for, you know, somebody that might do the job right. I don't know. I just feel that... Let me tell you this story. There's a Reverend Otis Moss in Cleveland who told this story in a sermon that he gave. He was born in a little town, I think, in Georgia. I can't remember the name of the town. I'll try to make the story brief. He says he remembers the day his father, as a black man, was first given the right to vote. His father walked six miles to the voting pole. He got there, and the people told him there, you're in the wrong place, boy. He walked another eight miles to the voting pole, and they said, you're in the wrong place. You should be seven miles up. He walked another seven miles up and got there, and it was too late to vote. After his father walked all those miles back home, the children were waiting to see, daddy, what did it feel like as a black man to vote for the first time? And he had to tell them, his father had to tell them that he didn't have a chance to vote because he went to the wrong place and was denied the right to vote. And Reverend Otis Moss says that now, because when four years later came around, his father had died and was not able to vote as a black man, that now every time he goes into the pole and pulls the lever, he pulls that lever for his father, a black man who was denied the right to vote and died before he could. Just remember that story on election day, okay? But I don't mean to sway your opinion. I don't mean to sway your opinion at all, but I understand what you're saying. You're frustrated. Yes, I am. I'm relatively young, too, and that's the surprising part of it. I think that I can't find a candidate to vote for. The last election, Reagan and Mondale, I went and wrote in Mickey Mouse, okay? So it's like, I know it's a wasted vote and everything, but I mean, they're not saying anything. Nobody's making a stand. You feel the same way, Norma? I really feel the same way as Mia does. I don't want to be a hypocrite either. I understand what you're saying as far as the right to vote and everything that black people went through to get the vote, but as far as I'm concerned, from what I see from either candidate, I would not vote for either. There is another campaign. Nobody has discussed Falani, the black independent female candidate. So if you don't feel that either of the Republican or Democratic candidates are worth your vote, then you could at least vote for the independent. Yes, yes, yes. There was a news item on yesterday about South Africa and that the blacks are getting to vote in some of the elections, but they have to spread the voting days out over 10 or 15 days, I believe. I just can't believe that in this country where we have the right to vote, that not every single person votes. More importantly, when you vote for Bush, you vote. I mean, it's your right and your responsibility. Something's really twisted when the convicts in Massachusetts are allowed to vote from prison and us out here are sitting on our behinds because we can't make up our mind about which of the two candidates. But the question is, the question is, how many people in this country are so frustrated that they feel as you all do? There are a lot of people who feel exactly as you do. I'll let you speak when we come back. Back in a moment. I'll let you speak when we come back. New Crunchier Life Cereal. Relax, your kids will eat it. Life is still deliciously frosted on the inside, but new life is crunchier on the outside. Life tastes so good, even grown-up kids will eat it. There's a monster behind the chair. And all your cereal. New Crunchier Life Cereal and Cinnamon Life. Unless they're weird, your kids will eat it. Leo McCarthy's ads attacking Pete Wilson are false. Newspapers from Sacramento to San Diego call McCarthy's ads unfounded, false, sordid, smear tactics. The LA Daily News call McCarthy's campaign low-rent character attacks. The truth is, Pete Wilson voted for asbestos cleanup, for a crackdown on toxic polluters, for clean air, and for clean water. The truth is, you won't hear the truth from Leo McCarthy. Mommy, I don't want to play with Jason. I hate you. We both loved Wendy, but the temper tantrums, the fighting in school. When we heard about Charter Hospital, we had to give it a try. I'll save you time, save you money, save you trouble. We'd love to talk to you. Pick up the phone. Call us, collect. It's Worthington, Toyota. Rancho Cordova. Open till midnight. So, we're talking about people who are so frustrated they're not voting at all this year. Pam, you're one of those people, too? That's right. I take a lot of enjoyment in the process of deciding who to vote for normally. This year, I just am so totally frustrated because I watch the debates, I watch the news, and all I see is Bush saying Dukakis did this, and Dukakis says Bush did this, and I don't think they're getting to the issues. And I have a lot of questions on the issues that I want to know what they stand for. Yes, yes. You know, what I want to say is something. You know, I understand that people can get frustrated, but I myself, my mother and I, we just became citizens in 81. Where are you from? Where were you from before? I'm from Columbia. Okay. And the race and vote, I mean, it's something we are so proud of. And this is my second election, and I am so proud to be a Democrat. It's something I look forward to. And for you to do that right now, I mean, my God. I think it's something we take for granted. I think your comment, if you think of the people in South Africa and all over the world who are not allowed to, it's something we just sort of take for granted. And I'm sure that you are a concerned citizen, Pam, and I didn't have you all on here to bash you for not voting, although it certainly appears that we did. That's questionable. But, yes, yes, yes, yes, your comment. I want, I agree with the lady that says that she's proud to vote. I have been in this country for 25 years, and this is the first time that I'm going to have the opportunity to vote. And I feel proud because it is going to be my choice to decide who's going to represent this country, not somebody else. You feel yours is a wasted vote, though, Pam? I cannot, with a clear conscience, vote for either one of them. Who would you have liked to have voted for? Was there anybody running that you would have liked to have voted for? Not really. Out of all the candidates, nobody, nobody, nobody. I didn't hear enough to decide. I did not hear enough on the issues. Yeah. Dominic, Dominic, you feel the same way? No, Oprah, I'd like to clarify one thing. I'm undecided at this point. I have always been a Republican. I usually vote Republican. I find a frightening trend in America today that many, many people are undecided in which way to vote. And I just have not come to that decision yet. So you're still on the line, on the fence? Yes, that is correct. When we come back, all of you on the fence, it's your last chance in this audience to lobby for your candidate. Why should we vote for your men? We'll talk to our audience. You know they have plenty to say. Thank you. We'll make up a game, okay? But I mean they don't have their family gathered around them on the side of the road. Why, yes, Barney. I have to go to the bathroom. Go ahead, you got the whole valley. My name is Chris Fowler, and I'm the state chairperson of California Mothers Against Drunk Driving. We're joining with Attorney General John Van de Kamp and nearly 100 other organizations to support Proposition 100. We believe safe driving, good driving, should be rewarded. And Proposition 100 is the only initiative that rewards good drivers. 100 is the best choice for voters. Mothers Against Drunk Driving urges a yes vote on 100. On Sunday, most people in Waipahu, Hawaii, don't do much more than walk downtown for a shave ice and a little conversation. The rest of the week they go sugarcane for C&H. So they figure they deserve to enjoy a little taste of what they've worked so hard for. We hope you do, too. Walking sugarcane in Hawaii, C&H. Hey, let's be honest here. Dressed up potatoes are not all that exciting. So if you want something a little more special, here's the new fall line of savory classics from Rice Alone. Chicken and Broccoli Dijon, Mexican Fiesta, Almond Chicken Wild Rice. Because no matter how you dress up a potato, it's still just a potato. Save a potato. Serve savory classics from Rice Alone. Okay, I am trying to be as unbiased as possible. Those of you who are watching, who are going to write me and tell me I was on the Republican side or Democrat, I'm just going down the aisle and whoever wants to speak can. So, yes? Well, I've been canvassing for Michael Dukakis and I've found a lot of undecided voters. And what I need to say to them is that this election is about change. We've had eight years of an administration, a laissez-faire administration, a real every man for himself administration. And it's time that another policy take the place of this government. And we have a government that is a caring government that addresses the needs and the suffering of the people of this country. I'm a part-time citizen of Massachusetts and he has done nothing for the poor there. He has done nothing for the lower education there. He won once, he lost, then he won again. I don't know how those people voted him in. He hasn't done anything for the state of Massachusetts. His record speaks for himself. He hasn't done squats for the poor or the lower education. We need to start putting more money into this country. I saw a man walking down the street with no shoes on the other day. The Republicans are for the rich, white people. We have to start helping the less fortunate people. You all think Dukakis is poor. He has a trust fund that we should all have. Secondly, I'm from Massachusetts also. And he brags about balancing the budget. He's borrowed $1 billion since June to balance that budget. And he comes out and says that our budget is balanced in Massachusetts. And lastly, as I left Massachusetts, the polls were tied as to who was going to win the election. So if Massachusetts is coming out saying they're not supporting Dukakis, that's coming right to the front here. In my opinion, Jesse Jackson was the man with the best issues running for president. And I'd like to say that I will vote for Dukakis. And it's not because I'm a staunch Democrat. It's because his issues are closer to Jesse's. And I hope that he will gain more motivation toward Jesse's platform. Yes. One thing that I think is even a greater issue than taking for granted the right to vote is the embarrassment of being a citizen of a country as great as the United States of America that can't produce someone who is a leader, who can run this country the way people would want to. But we have to turn and raise, I've read, between $250 million to half a billion dollars to try and have people campaign in press agencies, make them look like maybe they could possibly be a leader, because we can't even produce that in this country. It's embarrassing. We'll be right back. Music People often ask me what my dad does for a living. When I say he's in politics, they don't say much. But when I tell them my dad's father meant to, they seem really impressed. It seems like everybody has a story about totally my dad's son from Sacramento. They talk a lot about trust and respect and say he's special. And you know, that makes me feel pretty special, too. Congressman Bob Matsui, integrity succeeds. I was in Phoenix, I had to give a speech. While I was working on my speech in the hotel room, I started coughing. So I called down at the front desk, sent up some cough syrup. Not all cough medicines work the same. This stuff was for kids, they weren't for me. Then I sat down for something stronger, and they sent up X44. Today's formula 44 contains maximum strength dextromethorphan, as effective as codeine, but non-narcotic. That Vicks formula 44, kick that cough. Formula 44, maximum strength for maximum relief, from Vicks. I don't want to cough again, but if I do, I'm taking it. Do you think for yourself, or do you like other people telling you what to do? I know I have the right to make my own decisions. Have you heard about Proposition 99? That's the one that's going to triple the tax on cigarettes. I don't even smoke. This is a freedom issue. Prop 99 is designed by one group to punish others and keep the money for themselves. In America, we just don't do that. And when they start fooling around with my freedom, well, those are fighting words. Vote no on Proposition 99. We touch the heart of your life, day after day, while we bring you the news in our own very special way. We're new girls, bringing back the feeling again. Because I may not vote in this election does not mean I wouldn't vote in another. Because I care enough not to vote and waste my time when I know it's not right. You say what? I say that we need to vote for Dukakis because we need more social programs, crime prevention, safety programs for the city, for the nation. Otherwise, the crime is going to run rampant. How can you say Dukakis aligns himself with the average man? He's aligned himself with average first-generation Americans. His parents are average immigrants. The average immigrants did not go to Harvard. The average immigrant, the average immigrant's parents, the average immigrant. I want to know what to do to you. I'm an immigrant, too, and I came here and I worked very hard to do this kind of thing. All of my grandparents were immigrants, too. I'm going to vote for change. I'm going to vote for change because I'm sick and tired of all these things happening right here. That's right, I'm lucky. This is a free country, and you're lucky that you can come in here. Yes, and I will vote for change, most of it, not because I like one or I dislike the other one. I need some change. You need a child, too. Because eight years ago, my texts were $4,000. Well, why come here? Why me? I'd like to know what tax bracket she's in. None of your business. I'll tell you what it is. It's the same tax bracket that Michael Dukakis' family is in. Well, all I suggest is that regardless of whether you vote Democrat or Republican, we hope that we can change your mind and get you to vote. And those of you who are watching, vote for somebody. Today, watch News 10 when you get home at 5 and 6, the early news a little later on KSTV.
