And I'll tell you another thing, I also went back again. To the top again? Yeah. Wow. Because she was now, I'm not an obsession, but she was, she thought back. I liked her. Bet yourself what they said. Yeah, I did her. Well, that's hard for us to hear. Had you known that he'd returned to your home the third time? No. No, I knew he was there the second time. I just, I saw a shadow under my curtain where it didn't touch the top of my windows still in my kitchen. And the sunlight was shining in under it. In the daylight, so this was, was it also? It was in the morning. It was my time getting up, getting ready for work. But I could see a shadow. The sun was coming in and the shadow kept moving. It was only a small slit. And I'm going, God, somebody's out there. And it was him. But I didn't know he came back a third time. Ronnie Shelton's terrifying story is chronicle in this book. It's called Unfinished Murder, the Capture of a Serial Rapist. And author James Neff joins us. I heard Ronnie told you that the women, if they had fought back, he wouldn't have raped them. Shelton told me that when he, if someone put up a fight or there was a dog, something like that, he would race out and go to a backup target a couple blocks away because he wanted victims he could subdue easily. And he went in with his knife, put it at their throat and said, you know, I need money. Don't fight with me and you won't get hurt. And then, then he would rape after he had subdued him. He'd break in when someone was at work, go in and unlock a window. And then the next day, on the morning, while they're getting dressed, he'd watch. Maybe he'd go in, maybe he wouldn't. But later that week, next week, the wet window would be unlocked and he'd go in. So the woman's in her house for a day, days, and doesn't know that the window's unlocked. I mean, how often do you go and check your window lock? But he says, over and over after today, daily. Yeah, I mean, it's probably a good idea. Well, Ronnie Shelton's story should be proof that there is really no such thing as an innocent peeping Tom. But the good news is that Ronnie Shelton was sentenced to 3,198 years in prison. Later on, we're going to talk with Karen and her husband, Lee. Karen was also attacked and raped by Ronnie Shelton in her apartment. And we're going to learn about other hidden apartment dangers. But first, do you think your home could stand up to an intruder? You may think so, but J.J. Bittenbinder shows how many of us are still making some major mistakes. All of these homes are basically the same, and they've got the same kind of people in them, and they've got the same belongings. So he's going to pick the one who gives them the easiest access. It's like the story of the Big Bad Wolf and the three little pigs that we learned when we were children. The Big Bad Wolf went to the house that was made of straw first. That's the weakest one. We've got a note left for somebody, and we've got papers on the front driveway. Obviously, these people here are not home. Okay, now in this one, we've got a house up here with a real estate sign on the front lawn, but you see hooked right to the front door are the keys to that house. What you need to do is put a reinforced striped plate on something like this and make sure that your trim or whatever you have is not this loose. He could kick this door in in about a second. That's it. Boom. We don't have to be victims in our homes. Our children do not have to be victims. Our families do not have to be victimized. We can make ourselves safer. And one of the ways we do it is to increase the awareness that a good perimeter is going to keep the bad guys out. So we're not even selected as victims. And one of the most important things is keeping all the doors and windows locked because it really isn't how tough we are. It's how tough he thinks we are. Meet crime survival instructor Sanford Strong. He adds that the reason home intruders are so dangerous is because they attack you in your home where you are completely isolated and you are trapped. But his new book could help you. It's called Strong on Defense. And meet Paxton Quigley. She's an expert on women and home intrusion rape. And her new book is called Not an Easy Target. We welcome them and we'll be right back to talk to them in a moment. This isn't the surface of some strange, lifeless planet. It's the surface of a dining room table. Well, we're talking about the frightening reality of home intrusion. And let me just say that if the information in this program doesn't scare you into trying to at least improve the safety of your home, nothing will. I know it may be difficult to watch, but so, so important. We're joined by crime survival instructors Sanford Strong and Paxton Quigley. Paxton, you say women should have a safe room in their house. What's that? Yes, what you should do is have a solid corridor on your bedroom plus a deadbolt lock. And before you go to bed, lock it. Because if someone breaks into your bedroom other than your, you know, if they don't break into your bedroom but into your home, you've barricaded yourself into your bedroom. And that gives you a chance to escape, call 9-1-1, or do whatever you plan to do. So it's very important. And cell phones are very important. Cell phones are very important, yes, yes. So make your bedroom into a safe room and that means getting a solid corridor and a good deadbolt lock. And that is the key, not being an easy target. That's for sure. And a lot of people forget that they're very predictable. We have to stop being predictable in our lives. You have to have a survival mindset and it has to be a part of every family member. You have to have what I call a survival escape plan for both intruders and fire. When your world explodes in your home and all of a sudden, life or death decisions are made in seconds. You need to have survival plans to fall back on. My heart goes out to Mike. I teared up back in the green room. They're the worst criminals there are. Go around the large space department. Ask a cop, what's your worst case? He'll tell you it's an armed intruder. If an intruder comes in, they will use your children against you. They will put a knife or gun to a child. I don't care how big you are. This man, Mike, is a big man. I wouldn't want to go up against him. If he had caught that son of a bitch who raped Annette, it would have tore him apart. But the problem is they'll use his child against him. Well, that's why we're doing this show. Right now, though, I want you to meet Lori Chandler and her twin sisters, Karen and Sharon. They always assumed their mother was safe at home, but they were wrong. Because like many older people, she became the victim of a man that she hired part-time to do odd jobs. He, Justice Sanford described, taped her up, dragged her around her house, looking for valuables, then strangled and murdered her with her own belt. And so then, Lori, you found out that wasn't the first time he tried to kill an elderly woman? No. This was a career criminal that in 1988 was convicted of attempted murder on another elderly woman in San Diego, where he smothered her within an inch of her life, but her daughter interfered at the very last minute. And he ran off. He was caught and sent to prison for six years, at which time he returned. And within six weeks, struck our mother. Wow. There are really just two ways for somebody to get into your house. Either break in or fool you into letting them in the front door, like what happened to Lori's mother. The message here is that, unfortunately, you really have to be skeptical of everybody. In fact, you may remember a show we did call Stranger Danger for Adults, where we tested some homeowners and showed how easy it is for people to fool you and talk their way right through your front door. Well, that show was two years ago, and the rate of home intrusions has almost doubled since then. In a moment, we're going to show you some of that frightening footage again. Plus, if you think for a moment that your nosy neighbors would surely spot anyone trying to sneak around your house, wait until you see the results of our next experiment. But now, take a look at this. We picked a typical suburban neighborhood, recruited off-duty police officers with ordinary clothes and a false ID, and asked them to see how many unsuspecting women would believe their phony stories. I'm with the water department, and there's been a reported drop in pressure. I'm from the gas company, and we've got some pressure drops in the area. My name's Bruce Higgins. I'm with the Village. Have you noticed anything when you turn any faucets, pumping some brown water through there? Time and time again, these women let the strange men right into their homes. Could we check your sink just to make sure there's not dead yellow water coming out? Would you mind? Sure. Thanks. It's been a problem going on. How do you feel by letting me in the house? I feel awful. I'm scared to death. Are you scared? Yes, I'm so scared. I'm mad at myself that I did that. I'm very mad. I should not have done that. So why did you leave AT&T? I fell for the gimmicks. And I'm disappointed. I miss AT&T. AT&T misses you, too. So we're making it easy to come back. Anything that makes my life easier, I'm for it. How does up to 100 free AT&T minutes sound? I like free minutes. We'll send you AT&T long-distance certificates good for up to 100 free minutes. Just for switching back to AT&T. 100 free minutes. A lot of eyeglass stores say they have glasses for about $59. But what they really mean is they have $59 frames. If you want the lenses, you know, so you can see, that's extra. So, if you want a real $59 value, not an optical illusion, come to Vista Optical. Get three free options on all additional pairs. A $30 value. Today we're talking about home intrusions. I can't tell you how important I think it is for you to watch the show and tape the show and watch it later with your family members. It's hard enough for one person to escape, but it's practically impossible for an entire family to do it. And Sanford has said here to us earlier that a home intruder, somebody who breaks into your house and attacks you or your family in your house, is the worst kind of criminal. You know, Oprah, that's why it's so important for women to take some self-defense course, because at least it prepares them that they know what to do. So many women don't bother taking a self-defense course. Because you think it's not going to happen to you. Yes, and so it's important that you have to learn how to fight. It gives you a survival mindset. Sanford showed the Lick family here exactly what he's been talking about. How to make a plan. You need a plan to fall back on. Take a look. You know what I find? That a lot of families don't talk about an armed intruder plan because it's real scary. You don't want to scare the kids. You don't want to scare the kids. Exactly. Exactly right. Does that ever scare you, Mike? Do you ever think about what would I do if someone broke in my house? You're not going to be able to help your children in an armed intrusion. You're going to want to. You're going to cry. You're going to scream. But you're not going to be able to. The only way your children are going to get out is if they have an escape plan like this. Kids, did you understand that?
