of a movie and it's been made by people who know the scene inside out the director of the movie within the movie is played by Steve Buscemi who has been an independent features by everybody from Scorsese and Jarmusch to Ferrara and Tarantino and in this scene he's having a very bad day one of those days when everything goes wrong starting with a hot young star who thinks he has it all figured out not into that hostess Twinkie hostess Twinkie Hollywood man you know it's all fluff these are the kind of films I want to be doing hey thanks man I gotta say I'm really glad you feel that way and I'm excited to be working with you yeah me too you're a great director man your films are totally wack that's James LaGrosse there as the whacked out star later he and his co-star played by Katherine Keener have a lot of trouble getting even one scene right the movie uses both black and white and color I've always admired you from afar Mark sounds rather professional well then left how does that sound sounds like champagne I've loved you from the moment we met we were working together I didn't want anything to interfere God cut there are a lot of little touches that are just right like this one where a grip wants the star to read his script I thought you might want to take it hey Bill you see the top of that light there bring that down about three feet and of course nobody can remember how to work the smoke machine the movie was directed by Tom DeChilla who also knows the independent world he was a cinematographer for Jim Jarmusch and then he directed Johnny Swade starring Brad Pitt who is not he insists the model for the egotistical young star of living in oblivion now this is a good idea for a movie and a lot of it does work but the inspiration ends before the movie does I was also not particularly fond of the idea of the dream sequences it would have been better maybe to just go ahead and make a straightforward satire about the strange things that can happen on the set of a low-budget movie I can't recommend living in oblivion except for people who are curious about the movie making process and they will like the inside view but it does wear out it's welcome pretty quickly I think that if they had left the movie set in other words we have all these jokes about what can go wrong or on then in the second half of the picture take these characters out into another world then I think this picture would have startled you because you know where it's going you know a lot of this stuff and it was like an idea and we'll pull together some scenes but not a fully written script okay coming up next a controversial film from India about the infamous bandit Queen but so many pain relievers today you might be confused about which ones you choose you should know Tylenol is different than the ones doctors call NSAIDs to varying degrees every NSAID brand can sometimes irritate your stomach aspirin can even ibuprofen can you may have heard of a leaf with naproxen sodium that can too Tylenol won't irritate your stomach the way NSAIDs can Tylenol is definitely gentler for your stomach another good reason to choose Tylenol the pain reliever hospitals use most just released it's Disney's newest sing-along songs video now your kids can learn all the words to their favorite songs from Disney smash hit Pocahontas it's not only a must-own for everyone who featuring songs from Pocahontas and other Disney classics part of your collection Poole on Debbie is one of the most famous women in modern Indian history born as an illiterate lower caste girl from a small village she defied two barriers her sex and her social class to become a folk hero as the leader of her own gang of bandits bandit queen which tells her story is not an entertainment like Bonnie and Clyde but a relentless indictment of a social system that allowed her at the age of 11 to be forcibly married to a man three times her age escaping from a husband and a marriage that she hates Debbie returns to her village where every man assumes that all she wants is sex played here by Seema Biswas she is kidnapped by bandits but in the gang she at last finds a man who respects her a bandit named Vikram this is an extraordinary scene right here she wants to kiss him but she hates men so much that she wants to hit him too Debbie's gang dominated the headlines in India for years until finally in 1983 she was convinced to surrender in an event that turned into a celebration of her cult status bandit queen could have been one of those glorifications of a charismatic outlaw that are so familiar at the movies but it's not it's an indictment of a system where women have few rights and no one ever takes their word above that of a man with a hot temper and violent passion Poulan Debbie fought against that system with the only avenue open to her which was banditry she became a national heroine because she struck a chord especially with other women this is an angry film and a fascinating one oh it sure is I mean as we see our national cinema develop you're gonna be finding people particularly women being pulled out of history and have their stories be told it's happening all around the world it's happening with this picture and I agree with you it is not a celebration of the bandit life it really is an indictment of the struggles that forced her to be one and so that makes it a much more interesting straightforward picture does one interesting thing about the film there's a lot of depiction of the way she was sexually mistreated by men in the film the Indian censors have banded it can't be shown in India and Poulan Debbie herself has sued to keep it from being released because she's embarrassed by this depiction of what happened to her so you say that a lot of people really don't want the truth to come out for various reasons you know that's surprising I think she's not being authentic to her experience that that catches me totally by surprise when we come back a wonderful youthful romance that virtually no one went to see in theaters here's your second chance our video pick of the week is next ah hi hi I'm Julie Julie can I ask you something finest and luxury service in Southern California style adjacent to Beverly Hills on LA's fashionable West Side the Century Plaza Hotel and Tower a Western Hotel my video pick of the week is one of the best romances of the year so far before sunrise it never really caught on with a lot of the public it didn't have big stars or a big advertising campaign behind it but it was charming and truly romantic telling the story of two college-aged students who meet on the train in Europe and in one of the great pickup scenes in movie history Ethan Hawk takes a risk and approaches Julie Delpy just before his scheduled stop in Vienna all I know is I have to catch an Austrian Airlines flight tomorrow morning at 930 and I don't really have enough money for a hotel so I was just gonna walk around and it'd be a lot more fun if you came with me and if I turn out to be some kind of psycho you know you just get on the next train all right all right think of it like this I jump ahead 10 20 years okay and you're married and only your marriage doesn't have that same energy that it used to have you know you start to blame your husband you start to think about all those guys you've met in your life and what might have happened if you picked up with one of them right well I'm one of those guys that's me you know so think of this as time travel from then to now to find out what you're missing out on see what this really could be is a gigantic favor to both you and your future husband to find out that you're not missing out on anything I'm just as big as losers he is totally unmotivated totally boring and you made the right choice and you're really happy the two spent an enchanted day and night together mostly just walking and talking in a beautifully written script by director Richard link later you know my parents they're still married and I guess they're very happy but I just think it's an healthy process to rebel against everything that came before yeah you know I've been wondering lately do you know anyone who's in a happy relationship yeah sure you know I know happy couples I think they lie to each other before sunrise our video pick of the week now let's recap the movies we reviewed on this show two thumbs up for Amy Hector wings charming comedy smart comedy clueless starring Alicia Silverstone a split vote on an awfully big adventure starring Hugh Grant as a cruel controlling theater director Roger felt the different story threads didn't quite work together I liked its bittersweet mood and insights into theatrical life two thumbs down for free willy to
