I broke them with a screwdriver in the trunk, and I tried to pick the lock, but I'm not a locksmith. And so what happened? After I pulled the brake lights, I was passing in and out in the trunk. And when I came to, I heard police officers' voices. And they were saying, could you please step out of the car? And they were very loud. And I just started kicking and screaming on the trunk and kicking and screaming. All of a sudden, the police officers got very aggressive, and they were like, get away from the car. And put your hands up and keep them in sight and yelling and screaming, and they put them in custody. And took me out of the trunk of my car. And that's why you're alive today. This is Chris, who at age 14 was one of three buddies who were kidnapped, locked in the trunk of a car also. Chris's two friends were murdered. He survived because he had the quick wits at the time to pretend to be dead. You said that you wish you'd known those trunk techniques then? Yes. There were three of you stuck in the trunk of the car? Yeah. Because at the time it happened, a year later I went and looked at my trunk to see if there was anything I could do. But I didn't know how to do it. So how did three of you get thrown into a trunk? He had taped us up and put us in. And as you know, he had a gun, so he forced us in. And it was stuffy and we didn't even think we'd get out alive. And your friends did not. They got out and then they were shot. Yes. And you survived because you rubbed blood over your face and pretended to be dead. Coming up, one of the best ways to get out of a kidnapper's car is to cause an accident. Details on how to do that when we come back. Go. You can do anything. Go. Out the door. Go. Right now I'd have to lean over here to get you and I'd wreck my car already. You made it. Well, I bet you didn't think you'd run into somebody else who would have been thrown into a trunk and survived as you had, right? Yeah. Because you already know each other? No. We met before the show. Met just before the show. That's a bond that a lot of people wouldn't want to have, but since you do have it, that's pretty good. Confident in each other. Yeah. Well, today we're coaching your children on how to escape from abductors if they are ever kidnapped. Your children have to know how to save themselves. Again, I know a lot of you might think it's scary to talk about, but it's the talking about it that allows your children to be able to think about it differently, should it ever happen to them. Everybody thinks they're the ones it's not going to happen to, that it happens to other people on the news. Not true. You might think that once an attacker traps your child in a car, that there is no hope. But Bob Stuber taught our students that even in an abductor's car, your child can still be in the driver's seat. And we can't say enough that the time to get away is right away. Take a look. Okay, if you were in a car and somebody was driving away with you and you could not get out that door right there, the side door, you could get out the back door. So you have to jump to the back seat. When I say three, you pretend I'm driving and you're going to jump to the back seat and you can use any means you want to get to the seat. You can kick me, you can scream, you can do anything. Okay, ready? One, two, three, go, go, go. That was really good. Another thing you could do is if I stopped behind another car, say at a stop sign, you could smash the accelerator and move me forward into another car. And this way other people would get involved. Something else you can do is you can jump down on the floorboard, stick your hand under the dashboard and pull the wires. If you pull those wires, the car is going to stop. If you can get out of the car, do it. And if possible, take the keys and throw them away while you're running. In an abduction situation, one way to attract attention is by making as much noise as possible. And you can do that by honking the horn and screaming at the same time. You want to try it? Okay. Ready, set, go. Scream, scream, scream. Well, this is Jesse who was savvy enough to use that horn blowing technique to outsmart his kidnapper. Tell us what happened, Jesse. Well, I was walking to my friend's house and this man came up in his car. How old are you? Well, I'm turning 12. Okay. And when did this happen? It happened last year. Last year? And he asked- So you were walking to your friend's house. I'm sorry. Go ahead. And he asked for directions. I told him the directions where they were. And he left and he came back again. The only thing, he said he forgot the directions and he asked me to tell him again. The only thing, to take a little bit, a step further and- Well, was he in a car? Yeah. Okay. So I took a step further. This is classic abductor behavior to him. Oh yeah, absolutely. Yeah. So I told him and all of a sudden he grabbed my jacket and pulled me in. And I started making as much noise as I can. And I was honking the horn and kicking and everything I could see. Because it was from the driver's side he was trying to pull you in? Yeah. Uh-huh. And he grabbed onto my jacket and I got out of my jacket and I had a sweatshirt on. And he grabbed my sweatshirt and I was struggling and I honked the horn like four times. And then I got out of my sweatshirt and I had a t-shirt on and I just ran to my friend's house. Whoa. Jesse did everything absolutely correct. One thing he forgot to mention was that in the struggle the abductor lost some papers at the scene which helped the police find out who he was. And Jesse's hat fell off in the car. And when the cops went and got this guy his hat was still in the car. Made it all fit together. Now, was it instinct that kicked in for you? How did you figure out how to do that? Well, I was afraid that I wasn't going to see my family again. So I just tried my best to get out. Uh-huh. Let's recap those tips, kids, on what to do in an abductor's car. Jump into the back seat to escape out the back door. Stomp on the accelerator if you can when the car is stopped at a traffic light. If you can bump the car in front of you, it will draw attention from other people. Yank the wires under the dashboard to make the car stop. If you can, take the keys and throw them away while you escape. Blow the horn and scream. Coming up, if your child is held captive in an apartment building, the toilet bowl can be her or his best tool for getting help. We're going to show you why, plus how the telephone can save your child. Back in a moment. Hello? She's busy right now. Never, ever tell a stranger that you're home alone. This is a show we're doing specifically to get you to teach your children how they can better protect themselves and escape if they are ever abducted. Bob, you made a good point during the commercial break, which was? Yeah, in most cases a child's going to do what the adult in charge tells them to do. And if that adult is a predator and nobody has told the child, you don't have to mind this person. If they say don't run, you can run. If they say don't scream, you can scream. They're just going to mind the predator and you don't want that. Yes, and be quiet or I'll kill you doesn't matter. They're going to kill you anyway. That's right. One of the questions that children ask Bob a lot is, if someone's after me, where should I hide? So Bob gave a guided tour of the best hiding places for children who might be in danger. Now an abductor will open the door to go look for you if he thinks you've already escaped. And one way to make him think that is by hiding. You want to find some good hiding places? Yes. Okay, let's go. Who would think to look for you under a pile of dirty clothes? Just make sure that you're completely covered up. Try hiding in a cabinet or under a sink. Once the door closes, you are invisible. After escaping, trash is a great place to hide until you think it's safe enough to move on. Bushes are everywhere. Just make sure that it hides you completely. Okay, so remember if you were going to hide from somebody, you would want to hide behind something like this big tree over here, not the little skinny tree so that they couldn't see you at all. And remember to stay far enough off the road so nobody can see you, but you can see who's coming down the road. Question is, how long should a child stay in the hiding place? It changes depending on the circumstance. It could be where a child might have to stay in a hiding place for an entire day or more. They need to know that they can move on when it's safe. And one thing that's very important for us to help children understand, if you escape, if you get away, this guy is going to come looking for you again. He doesn't just give up. So a child needs to know hide. When you feel safe, move on. When you see a place that you can go to for help, then jam straight for it. Next, Bob gave our escape school students some tactics for getting help, even if they're locked inside a house or an apartment which has happened to children. These are some good ones. Watch this. Now, if an abductor has you trapped in a house, there's some tricks that you need to know. Some of them will get you help, and then some of them will get you out. So come on and I'll show them to you, okay? Okay. One way to attract attention is by flashing the lights in your room at night. This SOS signal could attract someone's attention. If you're in an apartment or a motel room, one way to get attention is by clogging up the toilet so that it overflows. The abductor downstairs is sure to notice. Whenever you get a chance, try every window and every door. All you need is one, and you've found your escape. Okay, the light switch and toilet tricks can't help you if you're in an isolated area, so what can you do in that case? Well, in an isolated area, that's when you might try hiding in the house. The idea behind that is to make the predator think you've already escaped. When he leaves to go look for you, then that's your route to get out. Here's just a review of some places you can hide if you're in danger. You might be able to think of others. Under a pile of laundry. Underneath a sink. Behind a trash can. In a trash can. Behind a bush. Behind a tree. Coming up, hundreds of children have been yanked off the streets by abductors using an item that you'll find in every neighborhood, a mailbox. How your child can escape the mailbox lure. We'll show you what it is when we come back. Hey, can you boys help me a minute?
