The Soviet music scene may still be reeling in the aftermath of last week's Moscow Music and Peace Festival, which drew a sold out crowd of 150,000 people to Moscow's Lenin Stadium over the course of two days to catch such visiting Western acts as Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne, Skid Row, and the Scorpions. As an unprecedented dose of capitalist glitter and noise, then it went like this. Wow, are we in Russia? Is this Russia? Is this Russia? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. They lit the Olympic torch and they gave us this kind, you know, act of kindness, right? And then what do we give them? Sebastian. Oh, there goes East-West relations. Well, not exactly. The Moscow Music and Peace Festival was the rock equivalent of man's first trip to the moon, a place that may well have more to recommend it in terms of good food, comfort, and fun than Moscow currently does. The five Western acts on the bill were all stars back home, but the big attraction for the Soviet fans on hand was the high-tech event itself and all of its attendant Western-style glitz and hoopla. In fact, many of them weren't even in the stadium when Skid Row, the first of the visiting bands on the bill, took the stage. You know why? Because they were chasing the damn merchandising truck trying to buy t-shirts. Yeah, right. It's not like we stopped that damn truck so the people would come in and watch the show. The Western bands generally exhibited a touching faith in the power of music to transcend political boundaries. Kids are the same everywhere. They just play rock and roll and they'll dig it. One, two, three, four. I don't know what they think of us, things like tattoos and our freedom with our expressions and the way we wear our clothes and the way we do everything, it blows them away. Two years and three rehabs later, we're ready to kick ass and it just all came to a head on stage and felt good. Motley Crue celebrated their long-delayed return to the stage with an instrument-wrecking finale of a sort probably unseen since the heyday of the Who. And Nicky just picked it up and shredded, man. They slaughtered. They slaughtered. They always throw the bands that get their gear for free because they're the ones that smash it. One man who felt no need to resort to such antics, however, was metal legend Ozzy Osbourne. Ozzy wins the All-Star Award, you know Ozzy was great. Osbourne's reputation for sleaze and outrage had obviously preceded him to the Soviet Union where the kids know and love him. They were also particularly wild about another band on the bill that's played Russia before, Germany's Scorpions. Here we go. The Scorpions may well have been the original models for Spinal Tap, but they got an obdurious response in Moscow, making them a hard act for the headliners Bon Jovi to follow. John Bon Jovi countered with an elaborate entrance through the sea of fans, parted for the occasion by a detachment of Red Army soldiers. MacArthur did it. Washington's done it. Why not me, right? Bon Jovi also brought a bit of Bruce Springsteen's act to Moscow, a place the boss has yet to play, with a keyboard-backed reverie on the deeper meanings of this unprecedented event. But even after that flame goes out tonight, all your dreams should stay in those lighters. And even when they go out, keep them in your heart. And so a good time was had by all at the Moscow Music and Peace Festival, at least on stage. But what did the Western bands really make of the Soviet culture they'd come to visit? Living here is just completely different than what we're used to. It's a different world. Convenience is a real luxury. The people are wonderful. Just wonderful people. I recommend it highly. Russia the Bahamas. Russia the Bahamas. I take that. Well, if you too would like to do something to help Glasnost along, now you can by joining the third annual American-Soviet Peace Walk. It's being held from October 2nd through November 3rd, and it will consist of 200 Americans and 200 Soviets walking more than 200 miles together from the Caucasus Mountains to the Black Sea, with the Americans eating and sleeping in Russian homes along the way. The purpose of the Peace Walk, of course, is to improve Soviet-American relations. And if you'd like to take part, all you have to do is send $20 and a two-page essay explaining why you want to, through International Peace Walk, P.O. Box 2958, San Rafael, California, 94912. If you can't make the trip this time around, well, a similar Peace Walk is scheduled to take place here in the States next spring. That's the news for now. Stay tuned for more music on MTV. MTV News. You hear it first. Are you crying tonight? Are you feeling alright? I told the world that you were down on your luck. You were one of a kind. I want to never give in. Even when they burn my prize. Oh, yeah. Has anyone heard the test you've done? I see the scars you have. Did anyone speak up when you fell? Does anybody care? Rise again, little fighter. And let the world know the reason why. Rise again, little fighter. And don't ever forget the things you do. And you were one with the cause. And the reason for me. You were a fighter for peace on this Earth. And you were never afraid. You put your life on the line. And you were always alone down on the sea. Without a weapon to fight it, you came to fight a war. That took your life, but did you know that you would never die? Rise again, little fighter. And let the world know the reason why. Shine again, little fighter. And don't ever forget the things you do. I feel alright. Yes, I can. Oh, oh, oh. You got it all, little fighter. Oh, cause I will stand beside you. Never stop believing. So rise, rise, rise. Rise again, little fighter. And let the world know the reason why. Shine again, little fighter. And don't ever forget the things you do. Rise again, little fighter. Don't stop and let the world know the reason why. Shine again, little fighter. And don't ever forget the things you do. Yeah, don't ever forget the things you do. Well, it's about time you showed up. It's MTV's Big Riot Show, where tonight we give you the freedom of television assembly and the chance to win big. Get your electronic billy clubs ready and get ready to tell us what you want to see first on tonight's show. Press one for an outbreak from Winger. Or punch two to hear our video dominatrix repeat the riot act. Back three for the nerve wrench. Or bludgeon the reckless abandon number four to see the damaging effects of police brutality. Whatever. Raise your voices now. Well, we asked this restive mob what they wanted to see. And an amazing rrrrrr-bo. 43% wanted to see Winger. I hear it again on the club. Counting every day I've been alone. How long before you're coming back? If I don't see your face, I'll turn to stone. I can't keep holding on this way. I can't go on another day. Can't you hear me when I say, girl, I'm hungry. For your love, girl, I'm hungry. Baby, let me in. I'm hungry. For your love, girl, I'm hungry. I can't get enough. Your eyes are the color of my heart. And I look in your eyes, everything so clear. So still together when we part, I begin to die. I can't keep holding on this way. I can't go on another day. Can't you hear me when I say, girl, I'm hungry. For your love, girl, I'm hungry. I can't get enough. I'm hungry. For your love, girl, I'm hungry. I can't get enough. I lie awake all night. I can't stop remembering. You're not to make it right. I can't hold it in. I'm hungry. I hear the chicken on the door. Can't take it every day. I've been alone. I'm hungry. I'm hungry. For your love, girl, I'm hungry. Baby, let me in. I'm hungry. For your love, girl, I'm hungry. Baby, let me in. I'm hungry. For your love, girl, I'm hungry. I'm hungry. Baby, let me in. I'm hungry. Oh, that winger. You know, when it comes to crowd control, nobody does it better than their very own contest host, Sergeant Vince. Vince. A new movie starring the one and only Mr. Hulk Hogan. Our grand prize tonight, a trip to Hulk's hometown, Venice Beach, California. A private workout session and movie screening with the Hulkster. A lifetime membership to Golf Gym. And a prize package of neat stuff from the movie. Plus, there's lots of other prizes I'll tell you about later. Out of those guys do this voice all the time. Here's how you win. This eyeball will appear in several of tonight's videos. Count the number of times you see it. One, two, three. Call me up with that number. If you're right, you'll get to answer the big question. Get that right and you could win dinner with the Hulk. Get it wrong and you could be dinner with the Hulk. Just one more thing. We're expecting a surprise visitor later. Go ahead, try and guess who it's going to be. And now, here's Living Colour with Open Letter to a Landlord. Now you can tear a building down, but you can't erase a memory. These houses may look torn down, but they have a value you can see. This is my neighborhood. This is where I come from. I call this place my home. You call this place your slum. You want to let the people out. This is what you're all about. You treat both people just like trash. Turn around and make me dance. Now you can tear a building down, but you can't erase a memory. These houses may look torn down, but they have a value you can see. Last month there was a fire. I saw serums in the dark. You set a fire so I fell in. You got your sympathies alive. Girl, there's a feeling that you're burned. It's more blood money that you're worth. We are forced to relocate from the pain that you created. Now you can tear a building down, but you can't erase a memory. These houses may look torn down, but they have a value you can see. Now you can tear a building down, but you can't erase a memory. These houses may look torn down, but they have a value you can see. We lived here for so many years. Not as possible to be here. For a profit you will take control. Where will all the older people go? They used to be with kids to play. Without the scourges of decay. Now our kids are living dead. They crack and blow their lives away. Now you can tear a building down, but you can't erase a memory. These houses may look torn down, but they have a value you can see. Now you can tear a building down, but you can't erase a memory. These houses may look torn down, but they have a value you can see. You've got to fight, you've got to fight, you've got to fight for your name. You'll be happy, you'll be proud, you'll be proud, you'll be proud for your name. You've got to fight, you've got to fight, you've got to fight for your name. Wipe the Blood Object Club dented face later. Our video dominatrix is next on MTV's Big Riot Show. In Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, a mother of two receives a visit from a rap musician. Soon she is swilling funky cold Medina and live in large with $5,000 in cash. In Winter Haven, Florida, a 22-year-old bank teller is struck by an offer to change her miserable life. Within weeks, she is whisked away to a whole new world of her choice, more than 15 miles away. In Richmond, Virginia, a bartender abruptly acquires the Batmobile, a vehicle with $25,000 under the hood, and the same first two letters as his vocation. The events that so-called scientists dismiss as mere evidence of the occult all share one striking characteristic. The people involved are MTV contest winners. My miserable life? Not any longer. I win $25,000! The eerie, inescapable truth. People really win on MTV. People really do win on MTV! What makes birthdays so special? Is it the party, the presents, the cake, or is it something more? Perhaps birthdays are special because we're celebrating the most precious gift of all, life. Unfortunately, there are many, many boys and girls in this world whose lives offer little reason to celebrate. Did you know in many countries, two out of five little ones never even make it to their fifth birthday? In Bangladesh, a four-year-old must drink from the same disease-infested water that the animals bathe in. And in El Salvador, a little girl lies in a dark corner of her family's hut stricken with tuberculosis, too weak to move. But there is something you and I can do. Together with the people at Save the Children, we can help bring years and years of healthy, happy birthdays to little children all over the world. All it takes is $20 a month and a little love and compassion to become a sponsor. And your sponsorship dollars combined with others can do so much, like provide immunizations to children threatened by disease and help build wells for families who lack clean water. I can't think of a better gift than one that comes from within. So why don't you reach down into your heart and call? There's no obligation. You don't even have to send money now. Just call. In a few days, we'll send you a description of a child who needs you. Just read through the materials, then decide. Nothing compares with the joy you'll find in seeing your sponsored child grow and mature in a healthy environment you helped provide. So please call and help give a little child what he or she really needs most, another birthday. Bring a lifetime of happy birthdays to a child who needs you. Call 1-800-367-7070. That's 1-800-367-7070. On the street, you don't get another quarter. Well, here she comes singing that long walk down Passion's flight deck, our very own Video Dominatrix. Hello, my name is Luca and I live on the second floor. Yes, I think I've seen you before. Have you been splying on me? What are our three video choices for today, Louise? Luca, pardon? We have three, Scott. I mean Chuck. One is Jodie Watley, two is Richard Marks, three is Leda Ford. Choose whichever one you want to. So hit those lap toys now. And tonight's sponsor, Louise? Tonight's Tri-Vid Audience Pick Pack is brought to you by Plasticine Tires. They're for real. They're plasticine. Oh, love it. And it seems that our big, big how much for our audience? What do we got? Whoa, whoa, 49% went for Leda Ford. Obviously inspired by this rubber look you're sporting today, Luca. Like that? Well, thanks. Thank you once again. It's Louise and keep it under your hat. Get a hat. Always the fun stuff, the video dominatrix. Here's Leda Ford now. Baby, I get so scared inside that I don't really understand. Is it love that's on my mind or is it fantasy? Heaven is in the palm of my hand and it's waiting here for you. What am I supposed to do in a child and tragedy? If I close my eyes forever, will it all remain unchanged? If I close my eyes forever, will it all remain the same? Sometimes it's hard to hold on, so hard to hold on to my dreams. It is the only one it seems when you face the face with me. Like a dagger, you stick me in the heart and taste the blood from my blade. And when we sleep, would you shelter me in your warm and darkened grave? If I close my eyes forever, will it all remain unchanged? If I close my eyes forever, will it all remain the same? Will you ever take me? No, I just can't take the pain. Will you ever trust me? No, I'll never feel the same. I know I've been so hard on you. I know I've told you lies. If I could have just one more wish, I'd wipe the cobwebs from my eyes. If I close my eyes forever, will it all remain unchanged? If I close my eyes forever, will it all remain the same? Close your eyes, close your eyes. You gotta close your eyes for me. Be it government censorship or a match head pipe bomb, nothing will stop Vince from doing what he feels is right on MTV's Big Riot Show. MTV presents News at Night, your world. When you see an ad asking you to help people who are sick and hungry, do you ever wonder where your contribution really goes? A Save the Children sponsor knows. The part that I like best about Save the Children is the fact that while you're sponsoring an individual child, the program is geared to benefit the community. It costs so little to do so much good. It gave, I think, both of us a feeling that we were doing something for somebody very specific. Please call now and let us send you a photo and description of a child who needs a sponsor like you. No commitment. Just look them over and decide whether you'll become a Save the Children sponsor. If you want to make a significant difference in a child's life, this is the way. As we noted not long ago, the Parents Music Resource Center, or the PMRC, had to withdraw and re-edit its sensationalistic home video, Rising to the Challenge, after it was revealed that the tape included a fabricated Bruce Springsteen quote that implied his support of the PMRC. That disinformation was exposed by Springsteen's biographer, rock writer Dave Marsh. Marsh is a member of the music industry's anti-censorship coalition, Music in Action, a group that believes the PMRC is really a reactionary fringe group with little popular support and deserves to be challenged at every turn. Music in Action recently held a press conference in New York City to announce that it will no longer be sitting back waiting for the PMRC to make mistakes. Marsh was there, as were such performers as Run DMC and Markey Ramone, and here's how it went. We're here today to announce that on September 25th, the 200th anniversary of the Bill of Rights, we will be in Washington, D.C. to present to Attorney General Thornburg or his representative signatures in the amount of 45,000 or more on a petition calling for an end to music censorship and harassment in the United States. Well, I'm just, you know, I'm kind of mad at Tip O'Gorn and PMRC talking about stuff that, you know, they don't know. They say my music incites violence and it's anti-educational, anti-inspirational, all that. It's a bunch of garbage, you know what I'm saying? And it just seems to me that these right-wing, ultra-conservative extremists are going back, trying to go back to the 50s around that witch hunt era. And what they're trying to do is just, first they'll take away what you want to read, then what you want to listen to, then what you want to watch. Soon they'll be trying to tell us what kind of car we should drive, what kind of clothes we should wear, what side of the street we should walk on, and what kind of restaurants we should eat in. Artists like Peter Gabriel, Keith Richards, and David Byrne have also gone public with their support for Music in Action. Still, the group needs artists to take part in the September 25th rally and in a planned Right to Rock concert later this fall. DMC from Run DMC is optimistic that other musicians will realize the urgency of the cause. And if they see me doing it, that'll give them the strength and energy and the courage to come and take a stand too, because if nobody does it, who's going to do it? Somebody got to do it. One of the many characters who's not too high on the PMRC's popularity chart is cross-dressing English singer Boy George. He first burst on the scene back in 1983 with his group Culture Club and a string of international hits such as Do You Really Want to Hurt Me? Then in 1986 came tabloids, scandals, and omissions of drug addiction. Suddenly Culture Club was history. Boy George was persona non grata in this country. But that's all changing now. George recently scored a top five hit on the U.S. black charts with Don't Take My Mind On A Trip. He started writing and recording with his Culture Club colleagues again, and he's finally secured a visa to visit these shores once more, something he plans to do real soon. We sat George down in London recently and got this update. I've been giving my visa back for two months, and I think that's probably just to find out if I'm going to behave myself. But I am anyway. I've been clean for three years now, and I'm a lot healthier than I ever was before my drugs problem. I go to a workout now. I walk for half an hour every day. I take singer lessons now. I think a part of it is to do the fact that I'm 28 now. There's something about being 28. A lot of friends of mine that are 28 have started working out and are becoming vegetarians. I think it's a paranoia rage. But I'm going to be going to L.A. later this month or next month to do some promotion. Because obviously a lot of people in America haven't had the opportunity to see me. And obviously they've all got these same ideas about what I'm like and what kind of state I'm in. So I guess it'll be good to just go and say hi everybody. Next month Boy George will release a new single called Whisper from his current album Hi Hat. That's the news for now. Stay tuned for more music on MTV. MTV News. You hear it first. It's extra special. It's one of the first songs that we worked on together as a band.
