Hi, I'm Nina Griscombe for HBO Entertainment News.
In a welcome home fit for heroes, singing superstar Whitney Houston
paid tribute to the soldiers returning home from the Persian Gulf.
With a spectacular concert performance,
an HBO presents Welcome Home Heroes with Whitney Houston.
The March 31st concert event, which aired live on HBO,
took place at the Norfolk Naval Air Station in Virginia,
before an audience of returning troops and their families.
Houston's welcome home to the troops actually began two days earlier
when she boarded the naval aircraft carrier USS Saratoga
on its return to its home port of Jacksonville, Florida.
The Grammy Award-winning artist met with troops
and received a tour of the Saratoga,
making stops in the ship's hospital to visit some of the injured
and addressing the crowd as they prepared their return to the U.S.
I heard I'm the first woman you've seen in a long time.
And the troops were no less grateful in Norfolk,
where Houston put on an hour and a half concert
filled with many of her greatest hits,
as well as songs specifically selected for the returning heroes.
It's great that she's doing this for us, you know,
and we really appreciate her. We love the girl.
It's great to be home. It really is.
I think it's great that she decided to come out and give the troops a show.
The troops have to feel great to know that people welcome them here, love them.
HBO viewers also turned out in full force for the event.
HBO presents Welcome Home Heroes with Whitney Houston,
beat out all other network competition in HBO homes,
and ranks as one of the most watched concert events in HBO's history.
And making another small piece of history,
Paul Newman celebrated the 10th anniversary of his Newman's Own Food Line
with a party at New York's Russian Tea Room.
Newman started the venture marketing his own recipe for salad dressing,
branching out with a popular popcorn brand and other famous-faced products.
Newman's Own now sells at an annual rate of $55 million.
Since the beginning, the company has donated all after-tax profits to charity.
I think in 1988 we had 400 and somewhat requests,
and this year we had almost double that,
which tells you something about the recession.
So the business is a very whimsical business,
and the way we choose our charities is probably also very whimsical.
But despite the fun of giving away all those profits,
his partner admits he was a little taken aback when Newman first brought up the idea.
He said, because you make your money from writing and I make my money from acting,
and he said, we are going to give it away,
and I said, yeah, we're going to give it away, and that's how it was.
So far, Newman's Own has donated more than $40 million to charity.
