Choose to be your most beautiful, salon beautiful. Salon Selectives from Helene Curtis welcomes you to this guide to achieving salon beautiful hair. In this video, two of New York's premier hairstylists will bring you styling and maintenance tips straight from the salon. You'll also learn how to select your perfect custom combination of hair care products so that you can look like you just stepped out of a salon every day. Choose to be your most beautiful. It's really very important to take good care of your hair and to maintain it. In order to do this in the best way, you've got to start out by knowing what type of hair you've got. One of the major concerns of our clients is that they're able to recreate at home the looks that we give them in a salon. So what we're going to do today in this video is describe three different hair types and the different styling options. We're going to talk about long, straight, fine hair, which we all know can be difficult to style. We're going to talk about curly hair, whether it be naturally curly or permed, and we're also going to discuss different styling options for short hair and show its versatility. We'll be pointing out the differences in maintaining oily hair versus dry hair, in maintaining chemically treated hair versus natural hair. As consultants to salon selectives, we keep up with the latest trends in hair styling and hair care in order to help them create new products that meet these ever-changing needs. The thing to remember about any hairstyle and any cut is that it has to match the individual and the lifestyle. Now when a client like Katherine comes into the salon, the first thing we do is a consultation. During the consultation, we take a look at her overall hair condition. In Katherine's case, her hair is long and it's color-treated, so it tends to be a little bit dry, particularly at the ends. What she should be using is a level three gentle shampoo that will be deeply cleansing for her hair but won't damage it and won't strip any of the color. Hair gets its body from the root area, so the last place that you want to apply conditioner to is at the scalp or at the root. For long hair, which tends to be heavy and sometimes limp, you want to apply conditioner where it is most often damaged. In Katherine's case, her hair is damaged from the mid-shaft down through to the ends. So a good technique for her would be, after she's shampooed her hair in the shower, to put her hair in a ponytail and apply a conditioner such as Salon Selective's Deep Replenishing Treatment on that ponytail from the mid-shaft down through to the ends and let it penetrate for a few minutes. After that, she can rinse it out and the results will be shiny, lustrous, much better conditioned hair. Hair like Katherine's can be very slippery when you're trying to style it and really needs all of the body that it can get. To achieve this daytime look for Katherine, what we use on her is Botifying Spray Gel Level 15. This spray gel is applied to the hair when the hair is damp, paying particular attention when blow-drying the hair to the roots of the hair to give it more lift and volume. If she wants to do something different with her hair, let's say sweep it back away from her face or remove her bangs, she can just hold her hair out away from her face, spray it with the Styling Spritz Level 15, that should hold it there all day long. Now we all know that long hair can be difficult to style, but it doesn't mean that you're locked into wearing your hair one way. There are many options available to you. What we're going to use on Katherine's hair is Botifying Extra Hold Level 10 Hairspray. That's just to make sure that it holds all of the stray ends in place. We're going to section her hair off from front of her ears forward, take it all to the top of her head, keep twisting and twisting and twisting it, wrap it around its base, tuck it behind itself, and just pin it in. It's really simple and just looks beautiful. If she wants to do a variation of that, what she can then do is either wear her hair down and maybe curl it in the back, or take it all, put it into the nape of her neck, twist it into a knot, and pin it in place. It looks very elegant and wonderful for when she's going out. You know, something as simple as the way you towel dry your hair can really have a great effect on the overall condition and the overall look of your hair. In a case like Diane's where her hair is naturally curly, the last thing you'd want to do is rub her hair dry with a towel. Instead, what she should be doing is blotting her hair dry very gently. This will preserve the nice curl formation, and it will ensure against any matting or any frizziness. On a daily basis, the best combination for Diane would be the Extra Body Level 6 Shampoo to promote body for her long hair, as well as the Sheer Type S Conditioner. She doesn't need a heavier, deep conditioner that might weigh down her curls, so the Sheer Type S would be best. I'd also recommend that Diane periodically use a hot oil treatment on her hair. The Salon Selectives Type O Hot Oil Treatment would be of particular benefit to her because her hair is naturally curly and could use an increased amount of shine and manageability. The Type O treatment differs from other hot oil treatments mainly because it gets shampooed out of the hair, guaranteeing no buildup or any residue. Now Diane has naturally curly hair. It's the kind of hair which can be affected by humidity. To keep it consistently curly and make sure it looks great all of the time, what she can do is some very few simple things. One of them is to use Perfect Curls in her hair. This is applied to the hair when the hair is wet. What it will do is revitalize the curl in her hair, make it look great for the whole day. If, for example, her hair were more coarse, or more wiry, or a stronger curl than she actually has, in that case I would have chosen to use a gel instead. Diane should always use a wide tooth comb on her hair. She should never brush her hair. Brushing just disrupts the curl pattern and makes the hair frizzy. Once the products have been applied when she's come out of the shower, she can just allow her hair to air dry. That allows the curl formation to form. After a few moments, she can pick up a diffuser and gently start to diffuse her hair using her fingertips to lift the hair at the roots to achieve a little bit more volume. For a lot more volume, she can even toss her head upside down, diffuse it upside down, swing her head back, and she'll have her head full of bouncy curls. Missing her hair with a water spray bottle at the end of the day will reactivate the products in her hair and make her curls look great throughout the whole night. Now what about those days or those evenings when she wants a different styling option? She wants her hair to be straight instead of curly. What we would do is spray on leave-in conditioner type L on her hair when she's come out of the shower and her hair is wet. This product will strengthen and fortify her hair and protect her hair from any damage caused by excessive blow drying. To start to blow dry her hair, what we'll do is section her hair. This will make it easier to work with each piece at a different time and give her the smoothest possible look. One of the most simple and effective ways to blow dry your hair straight is to always use upward motions when you're brushing your hair. This will ensure that your hair will maintain some sort of fullness although you're doing it straight. I think it's really important to remember that curly hair like Diane's or straight hair like Catherine's can be just as versatile with the right customized hair care products to meet your needs. Like many redheads, Sandy's hair has a lot of natural highlights. To bring those highlights out and make them shine even more, the highlighting type H conditioner from Salon Selectives is her best choice. She shampoos her hair every day so the frequent use level one shampoo would be the best one for her. But because she uses a lot of styling products in her hair on a daily basis, she is prone to some product buildup and some residue. So for that I would recommend that once a week or maybe even twice a week she alternates with the deep level seven shampoo to ensure deep cleansing of all that residue and buildup that she may have. Sandy's daytime look is sort of casual. She wears bangs. It really looks pretty on her. To achieve fullness in any style that has bangs, use Botifying Moose Extra Control 10. When you style your bangs, what you should look to do is not necessarily dry your hair downwards. Use upward strokes up and away from the face and then just pull down the pieces that you want to cover your forehead. To achieve a look without a part, something completely different, we use Style Freeze Ultra Level 20. This will hold any hair in place without a part or however you want to do it. Now if Sandy wants to achieve an evening look, something perhaps a little bit more sophisticated, what she would use is Sculpting Gel Maxima Level 15 to slick her hair back to do it with or without a part. Generally speaking, if you want the slick look, you apply the gel when your hair is still wet and just sculpt your hair into place. It will hold throughout the whole night and look beautiful.
