It's Gene Wilder, Madeline Kahn, and Peter Boyle in Mel Brooks' hilarious Young Frankenstein, next on FXM Movies from FOX. When you see an FXM movie like this, there's a reason for it. These black bands are called letterboxing. They enable us to see cinemascope movies in their original perspective. Cinemascope was invented in 1953. Let's watch the FOX Movietone that announced 20th Century Fox's commitment to this new technology. At a laboratory in Nice, France, famed Sorbonne optical scientist Henri Chrétien demonstrates the anamorphoscopic lens for the cinemascope system to Spiros P. Skouras, who acquires the world rights to the invention for his company. A revolutionary development, cinemascope throws realistic images on a screen two and a half times larger than the present screen with a third dimensional illusion, audience participation and greater enjoyment. In acquiring it, 20th Century Fox this week changed its entire production technique for all of its principal pictures and started the production of Lloyd C. Douglas' famed story The Robe in Cinemascope. Cinemascope says Mr. Skouras is destined to bring a new era in the motion picture theater and provide greater service to mankind. Immediately, people really love the realness and magnitude of cinemascope. 20th Century Fox introduced this process to regain the theater audiences that had started staying at home and watching TV. And it worked. Within a year, every major studio was producing cinemascope movies. Right. It was a big thing. Theaters had to be completely redesigned to accommodate the new screen size. Now, using a scene from the Fox epic The Robe, this is what you saw with the old conventional screen. Now, look at what moviegoers saw with cinemascope. Boy, who even knew there were people on the sidelines. Exactly. And the great thing about cinemascope was that directors shot these movies with this perspective in mind. Right, which is why here at FXM Movies from Fox, when we're airing a movie shot in cinemascope, we give them the chance to see it that way letterboxed. Look for the word letterbox next to the movie title in our schedule to see if that movie is airing in letterbox format. You know, my Aunt Blanche always thinks she's getting jit because the picture looks smaller to her when she sees a movie letterboxed, but if those black bands weren't there, she'd miss half of the scene's action because there wouldn't be room on the screen to see it. And since 20th Century Fox developed cinemascope, we feel it's our duty to show you these films as they were intended to be seen, and that's what makes us FXM Movies from Fox. Exactly. Plus, we always show our movies in their conventional format as well, so you can enjoy your favorite movies the way you want to see them. And that's good for your Aunt Blanche. Well, she deserves it. I'm gonna be directing my first feature at the beginning of 99 and this is great preparation. I want you to practice that much for me, okay? I think the movie is basically saying having a friend is being a friend. The script was honest and truthful and simple and it called back to me my own innocence and the innocence of childhood and how we lose that innocence. Whenever I write anything it usually comes out of just one image or kind of a moment and I build out around that. That was the original idea of the woman walking through the park with Tupperware and just seeing this boy with a kite and it just really rocked her world. Russell and I had a meeting and we were talking about, you know, what his inspiration was for these two women and at a certain point in the meeting he said to me this is my mom and her friend Becky. It's cool because I called my mom and she was like I want to read the script and I said not yet mom. He has memories of his mother helping her friend and the best friend being around a lot so I thought that was pretty neat. If we can capture that I'll be really happy. Lily Tomlin is part of an all-star ensemble in Tea with Mussolini, a film written and directed by renowned Italian filmmaker Franco Zeffirelli. The story Tea with Mussolini is based on some of Franco Zeffirelli's memoirs and his recollection and one of his fond memories is of these this colony of English women who lived here who were nicknamed the Scorpioni and as one character in the play asks why they're called that and I reply because they bite. After a three-year absence Cher returns to the big screen as the spunky misfit Elsa. She doesn't really fit in but she kind of comes in and out and leaves a trail. Are all American women as exciting as you? Alas no. Ten thousand meters men. Endurance follows in the footsteps of last year's Without Limits in telling a true story about long-distance running. Writer director Leslie Woodhead was able to craft a compelling drama from the seemingly monotonous content. Fundamentally it's the story of how one remarkable athlete became the athlete that he is. It's a it's a story that starts out here in the country and ends it with an Olympic gold medal of Atlanta. Although legendary distance runner Haile Gebrselasi had never acted before he almost had to play himself in the film due to the physical demands of the training scenes. When it was all done he was pleased with the movie's many positive images of Ethiopia. This film is very important for you know people now they will see not only the athletics also they will see all our culture. Tell them thank you for a wonderful day's work. Endurance was executive produced by a Hollywood player better known for his directing recent Academy Award nominee Terrence Malick. This is it the week of what looks to be the biggest event in movie history the release of Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace. We've waited 16 years for this movie but for fans on the internet the official Star Wars website has been doling out advanced information for months. We asked Ed Margulies the webmaster of movie line magazine online for a tour of Star Wars comm. Anakin Skywalker meet Obi-Wan Kenobi. With the recent re-releases of the three movies that stirred up interest that people of all ages who would kind of put it aside they're now dying to see the new Star Wars movie. You said people gonna die? Fox is being very smart about giving them previews and teases and coming attractions all of on the net. They have this great site www.starwars.com which is just about the most exhaustive information you can find anywhere and you can see trailers from the moving and coming attractions to whet their interest until they race to see the movie on opening day. The Star Wars site is comprehensive but as with everything George Lucas touches it's also very careful about what information it gives and what secrets it keeps. Lucas controlled everything not just the release date of the movie but also the introduction of the slew of Star Wars merchandise. If you have kids you probably already know that Toys R Us stores across the country anticipated the frenzy opening at one minute after midnight the morning of the merchandising release. We rigged up our producer Jimmy Rhodes with a miniature camera to capture a fans-eye view from the merchandising stampede. You refer to the prophecy of the one who will bring balance to the force. You believe it's this boy? Jimmy was on a mission to find an action figure of Darth Maul, a character whose runaway popularity grew out of a striking look and a single line from the film's trailer. At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi. I got my inflatable Darth Maul chair because it's the most comfortable chair I've ever sat in. I have a bunch of useless pieces of plastic. I don't even know this one I just grabbed one because it wasn't the frenzy of it all and you know the pod racers and oh Darth Maul doll. My fiance doesn't have him he's mad he wants him. I said you're not getting him you can fight and kill me whatever you're still not gonna get him. And it would be worth getting killed over. It's so way down because he's really cool-looking. That little Mace Windu, little Santa Poppeteen who is gonna become the Emperor and that whole thing. We just tested him out in Denver and it's like this huge inflatable chair it's so comfortable you just sit and rock in. Why Denver? Well they had the Star Wars celebration up there. And you went for that event? Yeah we were up there for three days. And you came to this opening? Yeah we just got off the plane and came straight here. Have you been planning your life lately around Phantom Menace event? Hasn't everybody? C-3PO got the Queen, Natalie Portman. June 8th she'll be 18. Had a big party for her. Are you sure about this? How does the trade go down? It's cool you know someone just comes up and then they just say oh I need a battle droid what do you got? And then most people want Darth Maul though or a battle droid. Assuming you had the Force, which maybe you do, would you have the dark side of the Force or would you be the light side of the Force? Actually I like to say I'm by force so I'll not go both sides of the force. It can mean only one thing, invasion. Good or bad whatever it takes I'll go for it. Thank you for that honesty. Kegon Jam, Dusted is bad guy. What's a bad guy? You seem to know all the characters how do you know them all? Wow I'm a geek. I got it baby. At last we will have revenge. Websites and toys are great but fans agree it ultimately comes down to the movie itself. We visited a landmark theater near Hollywood to see what motivates the fans at the front of what could be the longest lines in movie history. It began April 7th at the Mann's Village Theater in Westwood. Yeah I grew up on Star Wars. A group of fans ranging in age from 15 to 45 set up camp for a 41-day premiere vigil. It gives me the ultimate way to pay homage to George Lucas and his creation. I'm 17 I want to be a filmmaker. You still have much to learn my young apprentice. That explains why they do it but how do they hold a spot in line for over a month and how do they fill all that time? We just try to work out shifts. Some people are here from like 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. Others are here like 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. whatever. We got a we have a small TV here we have power and certain nights I bring out a larger 27 inch we watch movies we play hundreds of video games that our friends have supplied. Seeing such tenacious squatters begs the question what is it about the Star Wars films that breeds such loyalty? There's commonality is we love this we grew up with it and and if you think about it where can you say there are three generations involved in something like this? What's so impressive about Star Wars is that it transcends that every generation every race every gender every class every religion and at the same time it is modern American mythology. They will never get me onto one of those dreadful starships. With such voracious fans out there I think we'd better wrap up and get in line. Don't forget to look us up on the web at www.fxnetworks.com log on and find out about FXM the showtimes of your favorite Fox movies and more.
