Live from Seattle, this is King Five News with David Kerley and Joyce Taylor, meteorologist Rich Mary and Blue Gala Sports, this is King Five News. Good evening. Some of those workers Boeing is laying off are fighting back tonight. The workers say they have been cheated, asked to move here and now told they don't have a job anymore. They've hired a lawyer and say they'll do whatever it takes to get relocation expenses. More than 2,500 notices have already gone out. They started going out in January. Boeing expects to lay off about 5,000 people before the year is over. In Everett today, workers gathered to organize their plan of attack. Many of them are from out of state and claim they were lured here with promises of long term employment. They say the company is guilty of fraud. Basically people were promised the same thing, either 5 years employment, 10 years employment or that they could retire with the company. And the company can't get away with promising people that it's an oral contract, it's binding upon the company and whether it's enforceable in court or enforceable through society and justice in itself, through the church, through public pressure, the company should not be able to get away with breaking those promises. And I'm mad as hell they made me take my kids out of school, bring them up here and now I have no choice but to pull them back out of school again. What they're doing I don't think is right and I'm not going to stand for it. Attorneys are hoping Boeing will negotiate with workers to help them move. If not, they say they will take the aerospace giant to court. Day three of the work stoppage by Greyhound drivers. Some stayed off the picket lines today to mourn yesterday's death of a picketer in northern California. The pickets were down in Olympia. But in Seattle the strikers manned the picket lines. A car briefly blocked a departing bus. Greyhound says it was a similar incident which caused a bus to swerve yesterday, hitting and killing Robert Waterhouse in Redding, California. In Olympia, a striker says he was bumped by a bus yesterday. Greyhound says it is running 25 percent of its routes. Teachers in three Washington State school districts will walk off their jobs tomorrow to press their case for a pay raise. The one-day strikes will be in Port Townsend, Chimacum and Quilstein, cap a week of walkouts throughout western Washington. So far the teachers have not gotten support for a raise from Governor Gardner or the Senate. And in Seattle tomorrow teachers and students will join in nationwide rallies protesting cuts in the federal education budget. Teachers will gather at Seattle Central College at noon in an effort to prod the president and Congress into increasing education funding. Striking eastern airline machinists rallied across the country today on the first anniversary of their walkout. As many as 3,000 picketers gathered outside a union hall in Miami, eastern's headquarters. They shouted, down with Lorenzo, the president of the airline. The machinists are on strike over a contract dispute which triggered eastern's bankruptcy. One day for most of the Soviet Union today, regional parliaments and local officials on the ballot in three huge republics that includes two-thirds of the population. They don't have any results and probably won't for a couple of days. The millions of ballots are being counted by hand. But it is expected that reformed communists and independents will make gains. President Mikhail Gorbachev believes the election will help push his reforms. He sees the vote as a referendum on his actions. The essence of it is that it is a people's referendum on perestroika. I do hope people will come forward and take greater responsibility for themselves. Reformists like Boris Yeltsin say if they do well in these elections, they will push Gorbachev to speed the pace of change. An escalation of violence in the Philippines has left at least 14 people dead. They were killed as the government tried to arrest a rebel governor. The trouble started when Governor Rodolfo Alginado and hundreds of armed followers seized a hotel and hostages. Alginado launched his rebellion after the government ordered his arrest for allegedly taking part in a December coup attempt. The government claims the rebels executed one of those hostages, a brigadier general. Troops were able to recapture the hotel, but Alginado escaped. New talk of talks to free the western hostages in Lebanon. A Syrian source says an Iranian diplomat today discussed efforts to free the hostages with Syria's foreign minister. The hostages are being held by pro-Iranian Muslim extremists in Lebanon. Eighteen hostages are being held in all, including eight Americans. The longest being held, journalist Terry Anderson, who was kidnapped five years ago. His sister recently visited the Middle East and returned very optimistic. But Vice President Dan Quayle was careful when asked about today's reports, saying he didn't want to say anything that would get expectations up because we've been through this so many times. An American serviceman has died following Friday night's bomb blast in a Panama City nightclub. 21-year-old Anthony Ward of Houston died of wounds he received from flying glass and shrapnel. Six other American servicemen remain hospitalized. Several Panamanians were also injured in that blast. No group has yet claimed responsibility for throwing the bomb through the window of that nightclub. Much more ahead on KING 5 News tonight. Andy Rooney's apology. A moment in time remembered today 25 years later. The Selma March, which ended with police attacking marchers. Today, many of those who marched then came back. Some well-known, others you've never heard of, like Forrest Kimbrough, who returned to remember the terrible and the good that came from it. The terrible was scenes like these, Alabama state troopers charging the voting rights demonstrators. Kimbrough was arrested but not injured. And he remembers the good, the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. See, that being accomplished with so many people together, black and white, that came, you know, to just so, so this was really a thrill. But Kimbrough says the fight isn't over. That's why he brought his children to Selma today, 25 years after he walked for equality. Alleged comments about blacks and homosexuals landed Andy Rooney off with some, off rather without pay. But after three weeks, the popular TV commentator is back. His three-month suspension was cut short. The controversial CBS commentator returned to 60 Minutes tonight, defending his record of supporting racial justice. As much as I love my work here, I could get out of the Andy Rooney business tomorrow and have a great time, if I could leave here with my reputation. Rooney was suspended after a gay magazine quoted him as saying that blacks had watered down their jeans because the least intelligent among them had the most children. He said he doesn't want to be remembered as a racist for remarks he says he didn't make. The space shuttle Atlantis is back on Earth tonight. High winds threatened today's landing, but the weather front passed enough to allow the perfect landing of the shuttle. Atlantis took an all-military crew into space, reportedly to launch a spy satellite. The first member of the crew down the stairs was the commander, John Creighton, a Ballard High School grad whose chest cold delayed the shuttle's launch a week and a half ago. Someone launched another attack against the New York investors who owned some of the buildings at Pike Place Market. The word public disappeared from the Pike Place Market sign overnight. Someone draped black plastic over the word. The Citizens Alliance to Keep the Market Public has been trying to remind Seattleites about the situation at the market, but a spokesman for the group would not admit on the record that his members may have been the culprits for that action. Well, in case you missed it, the Cougars creamed the Huskies in Tacoma today, or maybe we should say they egged the Huskies. The final was 210 to 170. As John Sanderfer reports, the whole thing was child's play. The popular TV cable service Nickelodeon and its game show Double Dare is on the road, appearing at the Tacoma Mall to a crowd of excited kids waving their hands to be picked for one of the messy challenges that make this show a success. Did I say kids? Some adults got into the act, and the act involved breaking eggs over one's head against a 22nd time clock. Host Mark Sommer told us earlier he likes working with the kids better than adults. Yeah, it beats working. I really enjoy performing for the kids, and they obviously feel the same way about it. Yeah, I think it's just talking on the same level. You don't talk down to them or you don't talk up to them. You just find out that they're human beings like everybody else. Sommers asked the teams of boys and girls to pick team names, thus the Huskies and the Cougars. After the King Kong paper airplane grab, the Huskies had the lead, but only by a hair. It was neck and neck for a while. Both teams kept pumping up their scores. The Cougars slipped a bit on the banana peel garbage can toss, but the yolk was on the Huskies as they failed to convert during the blindfolded symbol egg catch. Just wait till the apple come. John Sand at 15-5 News. Yeah, looks like they had a lot of fun. Sure does. Actually, quite a tragic story in sports tonight, one that's rather difficult to talk about and even actually see. Well, actually, we're talking about Hank Gathers, who died tonight, the player for Loyola Marymount. Only two players in NCAA history have led the nation in scoring and rebounding. Xavier McDaniel was the other, so that gives you an idea how good of a player this one was. Hank Gathers died tonight. We'll be back with the details after this. The strange thing about it is that we see players go down all the time and you never know really how serious it is. Nobody really knew initially and then it just got worse and worse as time went on. The all-time leading scorer in the West Coast Conference and the 11th all-time leading scorer in NCAA history, Hank Gathers, is dead. Gathers collapsed on the court tonight in the middle of the game and died a short time later. He had just scored against the University of Portland on this alley oop. As Portland moved to bring the ball up court though, Gathers backed down court to get into his defensive position, but as he passed mid-court, he crumpled to the floor. Doctors in attendance rushed to his side as did his mother and sister, who also raced onto the court. Gathers tried to get up at one point, then lost consciousness. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital a short time later. At no point in time, from the time that he arrived here, when we could obtain tracings of what rhythm he was in, was he in any rhythm compatible with life. We continued full resuscitated measures for over an hour and were unable to sustain any form of cardiac activity. Gathers was 6'7 and projected as a first round draft choice in the upcoming NBA draft. Doctors who collapsed during a game in December, but was cleared by doctors to play anyway, was 23 years old. That tournament now has been cancelled. The Pac-10 tournament though begins this week and the Huskies will not slide in on a good note. The Huskies lost their final regular season contest on the road at UCLA. Trevor Wilson is UCLA's force. He converted this driving layup to extend UCLA's lead to 15 points, 49 to 34. The Bruins were never really threatened in this contest at Pauley Pavilion, they got the break going. Tracy Murray found Don McLean who scored 19 points and the Bruins rolled to a 74-61 victory. Around the country, the higher ranked teams in the top ten all lost their games today, upsets all around. For the second time this season, unranked North Carolina collared Duke. The Tar Heels led by as many as 11 points in the first half. Kevin Madden was a big reason for that with 10 first half points. Duke pulled within three at home with about seven minutes to play, but could get no closer. North Carolina held them scoreless for almost five minutes and won easily over Duke for the second time this year. Here's Georgetown coach John Thompson so irritated that he drew three quick technical fouls and was ejected from this game. He gave the Syracuse crowd a sendoff as he left, but all those technical fouls and then these two baskets gave Syracuse 12 unanswered points and the lead. And they needed overtime though to win over seventh rated Georgetown. So the scores look like this. Seventh rated Duke lost, seventh rated Georgetown lost, and eighth rated Michigan lost. Number 14 LaSalle won, Illinois won as well, and that Portland Loyola Marymount game was canceled. In NBA play, the Sonics don't play until Tuesday when they host Cleveland. Four games today though, one of them involving the Cleveland Cavaliers, they lost as you see to Phoenix. Chicago beat Boston, Detroit over Indiana, and the Lakers beat Minnesota. With the class A and B state champions decided last night, the high school focus turns to the triple and double A state tournaments. The pairings for this week's tourneys have been drawn and we have them for you. First triple A for the boys, things get underway Wednesday morning at nine with game number one. Garfield faces Walla Walla in game number two. The hottest team in the state is Redmond. They drew Lincoln for its opening contest. Curtis faces Eastside power Gonzaga prep in their opener. And here is the pairing list for the triple A girls. Some excellent matchups right out of the gate for the Wednesday start at the arena. The Mamish has a tough start against 24-1 Auburn in its opener. Shorewood could be a favorite with a 21-2 record facing 16-9 Decatur in the opening round. And here's the draw for the double A tournament at the Tacoma Dome this week. Again, beginning Wednesday, first the boys, 23-2 O'Day faces 11-12 Woodway in the opener. Pullman, a record of 24-2, will tackle Sunnyside. For the girls, Anacortes is undefeated 23-0. Well open with battleground, 20-2 in game five on Wednesday. Another dynamite matchup game two where 22-2 Lakeside will face Enumclaw at 20-4. Hockey tonight, the Seattle Thunderbirds pack the arena again and won again. This time, six to four over Spokane. The star tonight, the rookie, number 17 Peter Nedvid, five points for Nedvid tonight. Seattle took three swipes at it before he waited for the puck. Nedvid then pushed it home. That tied the game at one. And this goal tied the game at three. Nedvid again. Second goal of the night. He scored two more, and Seattle won six to four. In golf, not a good day for the local products, which dotted the top of the leaderboard at the Doral Open. Fred Couples began the day tied for the lead, but a final round of 72, which unfortunately included some trips into the sand, did him in. Paul Aizinger came to the final hole tied for the lead, needing only that putt to win, but he missed, forcing a four-man playoff. And on that first extra hole, Greg Norman, who fired a final round course record 62 to jump into contention, dropped this chip shot to break the tie. Greg Norman began the day seven shots behind the leaders and won the Doral Open. Mike Reed of Kirkland finished in third. Fred Couples dropped to fourth. On the ladies' tour, Beth Daniel birdied the final two holes to win the Kemper Open in Hawaii by a single shot over Rosie Jones and Laura Davies. Daniel also won the Hawaiian Open last month. Ever wonder what it's like to crash at 200 miles per hour? It's this. Kyle Petty avoided that kind of mishap to lead over two-thirds of this race. Petty the pole sitter won an extra bonus of $228,000 for winning the Goodwrench 500 from the pole position. And finally, MISL played Tacoma beat Cleveland. Final score was three to two. 200 miles an hour? I'd say ouch. Yeah. Boom. And then he spun like this for a while. I'd say more than that, probably. It's amazing how safe those cars actually are. They really are, sir. Thanks. Well, what's the weather going to be like for the next workweek? Ouch. Oh, no. Yeah, yeah. I hope you didn't get too spoiled by last week because it's pretty much over with. It looks like we are going to be shifting into a more seasonable pattern. But check out all the forecasts through next Friday right after the break. Don't go away. She sat behind bars to protect her child. What he has done to our child is clearly evil. Maybe it'll be sunny after all, no? Tomorrow. There's going to be some sunshine tomorrow, but that may be it for a few days. Yeah, well, it's that time of year, it should rain. Maybe is the key word then. When we have forecasts in the future, it's always maybe. It does look like it's going to get a little bit wetter, though, as we head into Tuesday. Trust me. We now are starting to see things clear out, though, from the last weather system that moved through. We currently have partly cloudy skies downtown. Temperature is 46 degrees. The winds are northeast at 2, and our barometer is rising. Temperatures last hour across western Washington. We're mostly in the 40s. Temperatures on eastern side of the Cascades. We're in the 30s, all the way up to 44 degrees at Walla Walla. A satellite picture tonight does show a lot of cloudiness over the state, but the showers are pretty much diminished on both sides of the Cascades, and things are drying out. If you are heading across the Cascades tonight, good driving conditions up there. A little bit of light rain being reported at Snoqualmie Pass. Otherwise, somehow the highway is bare and dry there, which surprises me that they do clever things up there. Stevens Pass, no tires are advised. Same story for the Crystal Mountain Highway and Snow and Slush on the Highway at White Pass. Our national forecast map for tomorrow afternoon shows mostly sunny skies in the eastern third of the country, except for a few showers down in the southeast corner. The temperatures will continue to be chilly, though, in the northeast, with a high in Boston of only 30 degrees. Outer in the west, though, quite a different picture weather-wise. A lot of activity. Some thunder showers moving over the central part of the country, and we see this system that moved through here is now moving into the Rockies. That'll give some heavy snows to parts of Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah in the next 24 hours, which is good news for them. They need the snow. You see the low-pressure area that moved through here yesterday is starting to drop to the southeast. It brought some heavy snows to the Sierras today. There is a little bit of a breakout here, but you see, already starting to move into the picture, the next weather system, and that should be in here by Tuesday. A forecast for tonight, though, not looking too bad. We'll see partly the mostly cloudy skies over the area. Temperatures tonight ranging mostly from the upper 30s into the low 40s, but right in the mid-30s around Olympia. For tomorrow, we should see morning low clouds, maybe some patchy fog, but that should burn off the partly sunny skies by afternoon. The temperatures tomorrow, comfortable again, ranging from the low to mid-50s. In eastern Washington, about the same kind of weather, partly to mostly sunny skies there, and temperatures about the same range from 48 degrees in Spokane to 54 degrees in Yakima. If you're traveling across other parts of the northwest tomorrow, it looks like most of the precipitation is going to be in Montana and Idaho, but have some morning rain and Boise turning to showers in the afternoon, mostly rainy day in Helena. Temperatures tomorrow should range from the mid-40s to the mid-50s over the remainder of the region. Mountain forecast for tomorrow, partly sunny skies, the snow level up near 3500 feet, afternoon past temperatures 38 to 44 degrees, and in our extended forecast, now I promise you it is going to rain this week. We should see increasing rain on Tuesday, turning to showers on Wednesday, and partly sunny, a little bit of a dry spell for Thursday and then back into rain for Friday. So if you did lose track of your umbrella last week, well, dig around tonight and be ready for Tuesday. So, honestly, it will rain, it will rain this week. See, one bad forecast and I lost all my credit cards. Never, never, never. Okay, thanks. Thanks, Fritz. The latest on Lenin now, Lenin stands still in Bucharest, but his foundation is gone. For the second day, workmen tried to topple the statue of Lenin in Romania. Jack hammers, blow torches, and even a wrecking ball were used today. About a thousand people stood by and watched their Sunday entertainment, waiting for the seven-ton bronze to be banished. But with nightfall, Lenin stood for at least another day, but it looks like it will be the last day. Engineers say with the foundation gone early tomorrow morning, the communist symbol will come down. Seven tons is a lot to move. I'm sure we'll show it to you tomorrow, too.
