Let's go! I'll be right back! Bye! Bye! Bye! Bye! Bye! Bye! Bye! Bye! Bye! Bye! Bye! Bye! Hi, welcome to this special Sunrider basic education program, which has been designed with several purposes in mind. First and foremost, Sunrider wants you to succeed as a Sunrider distributor. During Sunrider's nearly nine-year history, tens of thousands of people, just like you, have been successful in either supplementing their existing incomes, or making their Sunrider business a full-time career. Many of the people who have already become the most successful distributors actually designed and helped produce this training program. Their combined expertise and experience is being made available to you. You've invested in Sunrider, and Sunrider is willing to invest in you and your success. Understanding the simple concepts of Sunrider will put you on the road to success. Sunrider is a unique company with products and a business structure that may be quite unfamiliar to many people. Most people are very responsive to issues of health, nutrition, quality of life, making money, and becoming financially independent. But they are usually unfamiliar with the value of herbs, the philosophy of regeneration, and the elements of good network marketing. This lack of familiarity creates both a challenge and an opportunity for you. You must be able to educate others and to tell an exciting and remarkable story. The message alone is persuasive, and this training program will help teach you Sunrider's basic messages. During the course of this training, there are key points that will be taught. As you master these key points, you'll both understand the Sunrider story and will be able to effectively communicate it to others. Our program consists of this audiovisual presentation and a workbook that will pause several times to allow you to use the workbook. Totally, the program should last about two hours. The basic education program is not meant to be all-inclusive. These are only the most fundamental elements of Sunrider. You'll want to review regularly the points covered. Your sponsor, or when necessary, the corporate office, is ready to address other questions or concerns you may have. With the help of this training, you will be better prepared to achieve your first major milestone at Sunrider, that of becoming a director. Good luck, and now, here's the story of Sunrider. Good timber does not grow with ease. The stronger winds, the tougher trees. The further sky, the greater length. The more the storm, the more the strength. By sun and cold, by rain and snow, in trees or man, good timbers grow. We live in a world of change, a world of challenge, a world where success may be fleeting, often born of adversity and is rarely a product of chance. Nowhere are these principles truer than in the world of business, especially in the network marketing industry. This is a success story. But more importantly, it is a story of growth, of stability, and of enduring in the face of adversity. It's the story of Sunrider. To understand the significance of the events that occurred in the small western community in 1982, we must first travel back further in time to a distant country. In 1972, a young couple in Taiwan made two major decisions. They decided to marry and to immigrate to America. Tay-Fu and Oi-Lin Chin married that year, and by the summer of 1974, Oi-Lin was living in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. As she remembers, we wanted to live the American dream. We thought going to America would be like heaven. In October, Oi-Lin gave birth to the couple's first child, and by December, Tay-Fu joined his new family. His first impression of America was the cold. His second realization was that he couldn't speak enough English to place a collect phone call. Like so many other young couples, the Chins attended college, worked, and began raising their family. They were independent, happy, and poor. Their first sofa had been thrown away by someone else, when they traveled, they carried an electric skillet and cooked instant noodles. At one point, they were down to the last $7. The American dream, it seemed, had lost some of its luster. The Chins soon began to realize it takes money to make money, and that the only alternative was to work for someone else. Both Tay-Fu and Oi-Lin believed in work and were willing to work hard. Tay-Fu worked as a lab assistant, taught martial arts, and was eventually able to pursue his first love as the director of research and development for an herbal food company. After getting her medical degree, it was necessary for Oi-Lin to take their three young children and spend a year in residency at a Pittsburgh hospital. Tay-Fu remained in Utah, continued his studies, his research, and his development of a powerful concept, a philosophy called regeneration. These were trying and lonely times for the Chin family, when most of their communications were letters or audio cassettes. 1982 proved to be a year of monumental importance for the Chins. Oi-Lin returned to Utah. A fourth child was born. The family bought a home where Oi-Lin established her medical practice. The years of study of Chinese herbs, to which Tay-Fu Chin had devoted himself, culminated in one of the most important decisions of his life. He quit his job and, in his words, began his walk with destiny. In November of 1982, Sunrider International was born. Tay-Fu Chin's dream was more than just starting his own business. Sunrider, to me, is not just a business. It is a passion, a passion to share the philosophy of regeneration, a passion to get bigger and stronger, so thousands of others can enjoy the health and prosperity Sunrider brings. Most will remember 1983 as the year that the U.S. invaded Grenada. The Soviet shot down a Korean airline, 747, and Chrysler posted its first profits under Lea Iacocca. Sunrider posted profits of its own at the conclusion of that first year of business, with total sales of 1.5 billion dollars. Dr. Chin recalls that each month when the sales reports were totaled, he would literally jump for joy with the company's success. In the first edition of the January 1983 Sunrider newspaper, a new distributor, the former Ruth Van Buren, predicted that success. And I quote, Because of the uniqueness and purity of Sunrider products, my professional intuition indicates that Sunrider could grow to incredible proportions. By August of 1983, Sunrider had introduced 10 new products, and the company was well on its way to becoming the leading herb food company in the world. These were exciting times, but they were not without their challenge. I attended one major opportunity meeting where only seven people showed up, and that included Rob Lover and me. In June of 1983, the Automobile Fund program was introduced, and Spencer Park became the first to participate. 1984 brought the Summer Olympic Games to Los Angeles, a chemical plant tragedy to Bhopal, India. Thank you all very much. And Ronald Reagan was elected to a second term as President of the United States. Sunrider embarked on its second year of growth and success. Surviving its critical first year came as no surprise to the Chins. If you walk far, there is nothing you cannot achieve. Sales volumes doubled during the year, but it was not a time without challenges. Sunrider was pressured by government regulators to terminate production of its stevia-based product TruSweet. According to Dr. Chin, we were occasionally disappointed, but never discouraged. What seemed like a major setback soon faded from view, and Sunrider continued to prosper. With its opening of the Canadian market in 1984, the first step was taken in what would become just one of many steps towards Sunrider's ambitious international expansion program. In 1985, the Soviets discovered a new leader, Mikhail Gorbachev. The Titanic was rediscovered in its watery grave. And We Are the World, a song to raise money for Ethiopia's famine relief, hit number one. Considering Sunrider's growth and international expansion plans for 1986 and 87, the song might well have been Sunrider's unofficial theme. During 1985, the company again doubled in size, a growth curve that created many new challenges. Cash flow was not one of them. When asked whether cash flow was ever a problem during the early years, Oiland's response was very simple. No, there were times when we didn't have much money, but cash flow was never an issue because we never spent money that we didn't have. Instead, according to Dr. Chin, the primary obstacle during this period was the task of educating people and acquainting them with Sunrider's extraordinary products and its unique business plan. New marketing plans and communications tools were constantly being developed and introduced, and each one represented a positive step forward. 1986 and 87 were years of big headlines. Meltdown at the Russian nuclear plant Chernobyl. We have a report from the flight dynamics officer that the vehicle has exploded. The crew of the Space Shuttle Challenger honored us for the manner in which they lived their lives. The U.S. bombed the compound of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. A West German flew his Cessna into Russia, landing in Red Square. The Iran-Contra scandal unfolded, but the public was more concerned with Black Monday in late 87, when the bottom of the stock market fell out. Realizing that Los Angeles is the strategic hub to the world of international business, in 1986, Tayfu and Oiland Chin made one of the most difficult decisions of their life. They uprooted their family and their business and moved to Southern California. By 1987, their new international headquarters in Torrance, California was completed, and a new chapter in Sunrider's history was being written. It was time to change not only our base of operations, but to also change our way of thinking. The company was becoming big. The challenge was to think even bigger. With grand openings in both Hong Kong and Taiwan that year, Sunrider was not only thinking bigger, it was becoming biggest. During this time of rapid expansion, however, Dr. Chin disciplined himself to not lose sight of Sunrider's single most important mission, to develop superior and exclusive herbal products based on the revolutionary philosophy of regeneration. While Tayfu Chin's vision was global, his focus continued to be research, development, and quality control. Expansion plans could be modified, but quality of the products could never be compromised. Russia began its global retreat in 1988 with its withdrawal from Afghanistan, but things heated up in the U.S. as two-thirds of Yellowstone National Park went up in flames. Then, George Bush was elected as the 41st president and, like Sunrider, faced new and major challenges. Government regulators detected some product contamination at a warehouse, and Sunrider voluntarily issued a major product recall. In both Utah and Taiwan, news media attacks put the company under siege. Lawsuits were filed against Sunrider, threatening even greater negative news coverage. Certain Sunrider competitors also embarked on a bitter campaign of rumor and distortion. 1988 seemed to be the year of perhaps the greatest adversity Sunrider had ever faced. Some wondered about the company's stability, about its future, and what was Sunrider's reaction? 1988 marked the greatest single year of growth in Sunrider's history, with a one-year gain of nearly $150 million in sales. The adversity was great, but our resolve was ten times greater. Many people learned a lot about Sunrider's true character in 1988. 1989, the year which would prove to be the epitaph of communism, opened with a retrenchment, as the Chinese government crushed the pro-democracy movement. I live in East Germany, and I've been so happy united we are. But to the west, the Berlin Wall cracked, then fell as the Iron Curtain began to lift. Meanwhile, as the nation awaited the outcome of the World Series, the Bay Area shook under the force of a devastating earthquake, and Sunrider continued to take the world by storm. New operations were established in Thailand, in Australia, New Zealand, and in Korea. Growth and expansion continued to exceed even the most lofty expectations. Sunrider concluded 1989, and the decade of the 80s, with a record of growth, stability, and success that would be envied by any Fortune 500 company. And what will the decade of the 90s bring? Is it possible that Sunrider can match the same phenomenal growth and stability in the next decade that we have witnessed for the past eight years? Dr. Chin's answer is a question. When have we ever been stronger, wiser, or better prepared than we are today? Take a hard look at our achievement in 1990, and you will have a good sense of where we are going in this new decade. In 1990, yet another international market was opened in Malaysia. In 1990, an outstanding, even revolutionary new product line was introduced, Sunsport. Perhaps the world's largest and most state-of-the-art herb processing and manufacturing facility was dedicated in the city of industry. And on June 10, 1990, Tay-Fu Chin returned to his native Taiwan, where the Chinese Cultural University bestowed on him an honorary doctorate of extraordinary significance. Dr. Chin became the first entrepreneur ever so honored by this university in his homeland. From a teaching assistant in a chemistry lab, to one of the most respected and renowned individuals in the entrepreneurial world, from a fledgling startup company in Orem, Utah, to a $300 million institution represented by thousands throughout the world, it is a world and a time of remarkable change and extraordinary growth. And yet, as is often said, the more things change, the more some things remain the same. The philosophy of regeneration has not changed and continues to improve the lives of thousands. Our commitment to superior quality has not changed. The unique Sunrider business opportunity hasn't changed. It's only gotten better and will continue to be the single best chance for individual financial independence as thousands each year are discovering. And the mission of Sunrider remains today what it was when the company began. It is very simple and very direct. Together, each of us can help other people to enjoy better health, financial independence, and a better life. Sunrider's mission is to be the true enterprise system where any person, regardless of age or education or experience, can succeed if they have the desire to succeed. That is Sunrider's mission. That is my passion. And that is our future. And lastly, what of the adversity? What of the setbacks? Will the extraordinary challenges continue as well? The vision of Dr. Chin is both prophetic and profound. As long as we are succeeding, we will face adversity. Because we have met these challenges head on, we have overcome each and every obstacle with our honor and our company intact. Adversity has made us a better company, a stronger company, a wiser company. And I have greater hope than ever before. In thickest stands the forest grove. We find the patriarchs of both, who hold a converse with the stars, whose broken branches show the scars of many winds and much of strife. This is the common law of life. Where strong winds blow, good timbers grow. Now that you are better acquainted with Sunrider's history of challenges and success, hopefully you are impressed with several key points. First, Sunrider's foundation, its basic roots, are the result of the vision and dedication of Dr. Taifu Chen. His leadership has helped steer Sunrider through many difficult periods, and each year Sunrider has prospered. Still, Dr. Chen believes that the greatest opportunities in Sunrider have not yet been realized, but will unfold in the decade of the 90s. Sunrider has a great future in store. Sunrider is a stable company, a strong company, a company that has demonstrated consistent growth year after year after year. You can have confidence in Sunrider because past performance is a great indicator of future potential. And Sunrider can offer great future opportunity because of the universal appeal of its products and philosophies. In country after country, throughout the world, Sunrider is succeeding. Each year new markets are open, and each year thousands of new people will experience first-hand Sunrider's success. You deserve to be one of them. Again, Sunrider has a future. When you've finished, push the play button again on your VCR. Now that you have a good understanding of Sunrider's background, it's time to help you better understand what truly sets Sunrider apart from any other herb food company, and from most other companies in the world today. Sunrider's extraordinary success has been built upon superior products, unique and revolutionary philosophies, and upon sophisticated manufacturing processes that assure outstanding product quality and product features. In this next sequence, you will learn about these products, philosophies, and the processes which are the true heart and soul of Sunrider. You'll see first-hand the Sunrider difference. If you believe that we are truly what we eat, that how we feel, how we look, and how we function is a direct result of the foods and nutrients we put in our bodies, then what you are about to learn may mark an important turning point in your life. This is the story of one of the leading herb food companies in the world. This is the world of Sunrider. Good health and nutrition have been pursuits of mankind in every land and throughout all generations. Basic principles of good health were mastered centuries ago in China. History tells us, for example, that during the period called the Golden Age in China, the focus was on food, health, and eating the right combination of herbs. But that was then. Today, while millions do eat well, more so it seems, in this fast-paced world where a premium is placed on convenience, good nutrition is often taken for granted. But should it be? Many foods are synthetic or chemically treated. Some are sprayed with pesticides. Other foods are so over-processed that much of their nutritional values are lost. High levels of fats and sugars account for the fact that nearly two-thirds of all Americans consider themselves to be overweight. Eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia have become nearly epidemic. Those who suffer the negative consequences of erratic and thoughtless eating habits often seek out temporary solutions, yet still ignore the fundamentals of good nutrition. Billions are spent on fad diets, panaceas, or other quick fixes. This commonplace attitude is called the philosophy of substitution. But there is, in fact, no substitute for good nutrition. In a May 1991 edition of Newsweek magazine, it states, What's needed, even more than a whole new diet, is a whole new way of thinking about food. A fat-free pastry won't do it. A vitamin pill won't do it either. You've got to start fresh. At Sunrider, we offer the world an alternative, a better way, a natural approach that has been proven through centuries. Traditionally, the Chinese have believed that all life emanates from the five elements, and that our body's basic health systems correspond to these five elements. As important as the health of each of these body systems is, the philosophy of regeneration recognizes that equally important are the relationships between the body systems. Just as five great basketball players do not necessarily a good team make, five healthy body systems alone may not provide the balance and harmony we seek in our physical and personal health. When individual elements work together to create collective benefits that none could provide individually, the relationship is said to have synergy. And while it is easy to recognize the value of synergy, we must ask is there a synergy, a balance, in the foods we eat daily? Whole foods have a natural synergy, which individual chemical components may lack. For example, Sunrider believes a whole orange is better for you than a vitamin C tablet. So Sunrider strives to maintain the whole food synergy in each of its food products. The body, nearly perfect in its design, is meant to be self-regulating and self-renewing just as new cells replace old ones. Synergy, balance and harmony through eating the right combinations of whole food herbs, helping the body function as it was designed. This is the philosophy of regeneration, and it sets Sunrider apart from any other herb food company in the world today. This philosophy of regeneration is the common denominator around which all Sunrider product lines are developed. When you think of synergy, think of Sunergy, the premier herb food line of Sunrider. Sunergy includes all the essential components and herb food blends which, when eaten along with a healthy diet, can help the body attain its natural state of health and balance. The Sunsport line is designed to meet the needs of people with a fast-paced lifestyle who want convenient nourishment while they're on the run. Active lifestyles can deplete energy reserves. The Sunsport helps restore the time-proven principles of maintaining harmony. Vitalite is Sunrider's light herb food alternative and is designed to complement a lean diet without contributing excess body fat. Sunrider's personal and skin care products are called Candescent and are crafted from the finest ingredients in the world, including unique herbal extracts which help naturally nourish beautiful skin and hair. Yet another Sunrider difference is convenience. Sunrider products are offered in a variety of packs, so the right combinations and proportions of herb products are readily available. And Sunrider goes the extra mile in convenience by making its products available in capsules, powder, liquid, or bars, whichever you choose. For most herbs to have nutritional value, they would have to be consumed in such large quantities that it would be neither practical nor convenient. Therefore, Sunrider concentrates up to four to seven pounds of raw herbs for each pound of herb food. It's a real Sunrider difference. The formulas, or recipes, for Sunrider products are yet another important difference. All of the formulations are personally directed by Sunrider's chief executive officer, Te Fu Chen, who has devoted his life to the study and development of herbs. With his knowledge of Chinese philosophy and by utilizing the herbal knowledge contained in ancient manuscripts, which he alone possesses, Te Fu Chen has fine-tuned each formula to address the needs of a modern world, utilizing technological advancements of our scientifically sophisticated society. Just as the tastes of certain foods complement and enhance one another to create a collective effect that none could individually achieve, so it is with the herbs of Sunrider's special blends. Some Sunrider products contain over 50 separate herbs, each having been carefully selected and proportioned to enhance one another and to provide benefits that no single ingredient can. This concept of enhancement is an exclusive component of Sunrider's formulation strategies. And balance in Sunrider's formulations is the essential key in helping to establish balance among the body's systems. Sunrider products are not designed to replace a normal healthy diet, but are instead meant to enhance and to balance our food intake. And as our body systems work collectively in greater harmony, the body can function as it was designed to be self-regulating, regenerating, and fundamentally healthy. But perhaps the most significant factor that sets Sunrider products apart is found in the single word, quality. Quality that begins with Sunrider's many laboratories long before the herbs are planted or selected. Quality that is evidenced as herbs matured and perfected in the formulations of Sunrider products.
