With Elle we conclude this series of rare films made by Luis Buñuel in Mexico in the early 50s. Not all of them were masterpieces by any means though I do think that tonight's film comes pretty close. It's actually one of my favorite Buñuel films. It encompasses all his themes so neatly and contains his savage sense of humour as well. There are still some great Buñuel films which I haven't been able to bring you. I hope to do so sometime in the future. Meanwhile next Saturday a classic of a very different kind, Jean Renoir's La Régle du Jeu, The Rules of the Game. It's indisputably a great film made just as World War II was beginning. It was misunderstood in its day, cut, restored and can now be seen in all its original glory. That's next Saturday. Meanwhile in just a few moments Ange Weider's Man of Iron, the sequel to last week's Man of Marble, a film made in the white heat of solidarity. A film very much of its time but still I think a film that impresses with its immediacy and its power. That'll be on in just a few moments. From me now, good evening. Saturday's cinema classic is The Rules of the Game. Jean Renoir celebrated satirical comedy. A complex web of love and intrigue in a small world without values. A subtle painting of a social class in De Kenne. La Régle du Jeu, The Rules of the Game, 8th 30 Saturday on SBS. Beginning Tuesday, next left, the film is set in the heart of the world. An investigation of the future of socialism, taking new directions to meet new challenges. Step by step we are rolling back the frontiers of socialism. You can't sweep away socialism. Socialism is about people. I believe socialism lives every day of the week in the battles you do with fire in your belly against injustice, against the squalor of poverty. The government has to take responsibility for a fair distribution. Europe is redesigning socialist thought for a modern world and creating a new vision from an old ideal. If socialism didn't exist, we'd have to be inventing it. The Future of Socialism, Next Left, begins Tuesday at 8.30 on SBS. Watch a smooth, white belly. Listen to my heartbeat.
