Set at the turn of the century
And devoted to a 73 year old gentleman
A painter in the old world style
Whose repeated still life model
Is a certain portion of his large house in rural France
He lives quietly with days of walking and painting
Look after by an attentive woman servant
The story occurs on one sunny Sunday
When he is visited as you are
By his son Edward and Edward's wife and three small children
Edward, clearly not father's favorite, is dutiful
And one feels his longing for his father's affection
But Edward is a bore
And his pill of a wife is merely endured
But courteously by the old man
On this Sunday in question
There suddenly arrives his attractive daughter Irene
A happy surprise for her napping father
For she rarely visits and is resented by Edward and his wife
Gathering up their little girl from the lawn
She sweeps in for her hellos
Breezing energy and effervescence into the house
Irene is a mover and a groover
She owns a fashionable dress shop in Paris
Clearly her father adores her
Much to Edward's discomfort
And furthermore
She has that turn of the century rarity in automobile
And soon she is taking her delighted father out for a drive
But all is not gaiety
Her phone calls, though urgently whispered
Cannot conceal from us her unhappy romance
The script is spare
But each word matters
And much that is the matter among these people
Is illuminated by their actions
Their exchanged looks
And their responses to the restless children
Irene has more to say than do the others
As in high spirits
She cheerfully chides her father for the subject of his paintings
And takes him out to an outdoor country cafe
Where the dancing brightens his eyes and lifts his heart
For his rarely present daughter
This long and beautifully photographed sequence
Of which we see just a few seconds here
Tells us a great deal in the very few words
About the feelings of daughter and father for each other
