Global emissions of carbon dioxide have risen by about a third. Tackling climate change is a global priority, but the UN report says the response thus far has been woefully inadequate. The creatures we share the planet with, only we don't seem to be very good at sharing. 30% of all amphibians, 23% of mammals and 12% of birds are now threatened. And if other species are dying out, it doesn't bode well for our own long term future. The trends seem unremittingly grim, but the report's authors say their real message is an urgent call for action. Protecting the environment needs to be at the centre of everything we do. We need to be a lot more green about our blue planet. Rachel Harvey, BBC News. You're watching BBC World News, still ahead on this programme. It's only a movie, but it's sparking a very real controversy about police tactics, violence and gang culture. Just an incredible flight, the description from one passenger on board the world's biggest airliner, the double decker A380. The first passenger flight operated by Singapore Airlines landed safely in Sydney, two years later than planned. The BBC's Nick Bryant was there. The super jumbo performed a lap of honour over Sydney's Harbour Bridge and Opera House, before touching down at the city's bayside airport. It's nearly two years behind schedule and way over budget, but on this it's maiden commercial flight. It arrived a few minutes early. After the seven and a half hour journey from Singapore, the pilot pulled off a pitch perfect landing, much to the delight of onlookers who lined the perimeter fence. The media, meanwhile, was given a runway side view. For the airline industry, for the plane spotting fraternity as well, this really is a major milestone. And for the Airbus Consortium, it's a major sigh of relief. With a wingspan almost the size of a football pitch, Sydney Airport has spent millions to accommodate the new plane. To cope with the two decks of seating, it's had to construct new aero bridges. It's also had to realign one of the taxiways and strengthen a tunnel which runs underneath the main runway. Is that through to the A380? I only feel the size when I'm in a cabin here with you. Once I sit in the cockpit looking forward, looking at the instrument, I don't feel the weight, I don't feel the size, I don't feel anything. Except it's just another aeroplane, a cockpit that I could fly, and the plane flies beautifully. Over 450 passengers made the flight, the oldest 91, the youngest just 10 months old. The plane also carried a Californian who's now pulled off an extraordinary aviation double. But he was also on board the Boeing 747 in 1970 when it made its maiden commercial flight. What does it look like when the very people who are supposed to protect civil society become some of its worst abusers? Ask the makers of Elite Squad, a major new motion picture made in Brazil which shows shocking levels of violence used by elite police officers in Rio de Janeiro. The film has prompted an unprecedented debate in Brazil about police tactics. Our correspondent in Rio de Janeiro, Gary Duffy, shows us what is sparking the controversy. Police dogs and heavily armed officers ready to face any threat. High in the hills above Rio de Janeiro, this specialist unit trains for every scenario. Rio's drug gangs are among the most dangerous in the world. Police believe their response must be superior to meet that threat. For these police officers, the risks are great, but so are the dangers to the public, caught in the middle of often ferocious urban battles. This is the elite squad or tropa de elite of Rio's police force preparing for their most difficult and controversial work, patrolling the streets of the city's favelas. In this case, the favela is real, but this is just an exercise. But these are the same police officers who will have to go out on the streets of the favelas just a short distance from here where they will confront a real threat from the drug traffickers. Now a hugely successful movie has placed this small police unit in the spotlight as never before. The controversial elite squad shows Boppe as a force ready to use torture and even kill unarmed suspects. But a commander from the unit who asks not to be identified says such methods are not acceptable. These are acts that are unjustifiable. The limit of police action and in particular Boppe is the law and the law doesn't allow that. But among the writers of the film's screenplay was a man who served with the elite squad for 12 years. For obvious reasons I will not confess to torture, but I would say to you that for two or three years I agreed with the actions of the character that I created for the film. The movie has attracted unprecedented interest in Brazil. Some critics say it seeks to justify police excesses, a claim rejected by the director. It's understandable that a percentage of the population feels like, you know, kill the criminals. We want to get rid of them, which is a completely wrong thing and which is something that's criticized in the movie. In the narrow laneways of Rio's favelas it seems attitudes about the police remain entrenched. They think whoever lives in the favela is synonymous with a criminal and must die, must be punished and eliminated. For the long-suffering residents of Rio's favelas this renewed debate is unlikely to end their problems. But it does seem Brazilians are at least reflecting with a new intensity about the violence which blights their society. Gary Duffy, BBC News, Rio de Janeiro. Now a quick reminder of our main story.
