Well John Tudor rarely throws a ball in the center of the plate here's a change up Dempsey drives at the left field and Coleman turns in a line drive into an out now in between innings white he says how do you feel he's been talked the last couple of times that tutors had a sore shoulder he said that's not the case he he's had a little stiffness but nothing to worry about fourth hitter up this inning white he wants to see how he feels may pinch his head for daily up in the bullpen right can daily up in the pan for St. Louis as we go to the eighth inning a three three tie there is daily throwing as pain if it's Gerald and Okendo come up in the game you over to plus a sacrifice fly takes high ball one tutor at stiffness in his shoulder a couple of outings ago and went out and threw 93 pitches and shut out the Phillies on two hits that's when Whitey had three other guys ready to pitch if he couldn't go to the point I said was that really true he said I just didn't feel too good as you take a look at Pena pretty good fastball hitter against the fastball pitcher especially we have that for 11 lifetime batting average to do with Luis Alex on the bench bringing on there is tutors work thus far the one walk was an intentional walk to Marshall and now an unintentional walk from Pena to paint no relation to start the eighth inning so Tony Pena leads off the eighth inning with a walk only the second time in the game the cards have gotten the lead off man on and Fitz Gerald comes up so Nick Lava after sending down the signs watches Fitzgerald standing Hamilton has to shorten up at third so Lava sends the signs down again as Dempsey visits the mound Pena has now missed with his first five pitches here in the eighth inning and they've all been up in the strike zone of course Rick caught me many years in Baltimore you throw five straight pitches he'd say please throw one low and I'd say Rick that's a ball too but really what he wants is you to make an effort to try to get your body through land on your toe and get the ball down Fitzgerald swinging away lifts one in the shallow right center field Marshall comes charging in and makes the play for out number one Pena remains at first Okendo comes up the right hander is Tim Belcher the lefty is Jesse Orozco Alejandro Pena is due to lead off when the Dodgers come up in the bottom of the eighth inning now Okendo on his 25th birthday one for two plus a walk I guess Whitey Herzog would have more of an inclination to keep running with Fitzgerald if Tutor is not going to stay in the game because then you could pinch it for John but by swinging away with Fitzgerald it's pretty good indication that John will hit for himself and that's grounded through the middle over second and in the center field for a base hit team you will stop at second and now we'll see about Tutor who is removing his jacket in the on deck circle runners at first and second and one out and Tutor do up in the eighth inning and coming up just a ground ball but Pena you can see him not picking the ball up well falls off towards first base the balls in the center field for a base hit could have been a double play ball again there's so many pitchers in both leagues that do not follow through properly it's good to get your arm through but you should be ready to feel the ball some of the truly great pitchers have not followed through well you follow through but it just did not ended up like Jim caught which is standing with both feet more or less like a tennis player when we saw Wimbledon today trying to be able to go right or left like an infielder but most pitchers would rather think that the most important part of throwing the ball is just be able to get the ball with some velocity so it gives it guy you caught a shooter squares lays one down foul ball on one tutor tonight he led off the third inning by swinging away and popping out and he tried to sacrifice in the fourth and struck out his pain he goes back to second and then he did lay one down successfully in the sixth inning to move Okendo over to second and then he went back the first year all in one and Anderson and Hamilton both come to the mound to discuss the possibilities it seemed to me that Anderson was talking about charging to Jeff Hamilton and telling pain you that which is where the first baseman and third baseman charge the short stop goes to third and sacks the second baseman goes to first base the problem with that play is that the whole middle is open you have to use it against a guy with who doesn't handle the bat well see if that's what they indeed put on and they do and he swings away and fouls it away so first and third charging with Anderson going to third and tutor noticing it and trying to have one back to the middle instead fouling it off going to on deck is Coleman so we'll see what Herzog has up his sleeve here with two strikes and one strikeout they don't rotate Tudor Buntz foul strike three so again Tudor can't do the job now and the Cardinals with two gone here in the eighth inning sent Coleman to the plate who is not driven in a run as we take another look at the attempted sacrifice with two strikes which ends up being a strikeout Coleman now one hundred and four at bats without a run driven in painful look on John Tudor not from anything that occurred at home plate just not being able to sacrifice the runners because if Coleman does get a hit it cost you a run and if he does get a hit the chances of him getting in getting an infield hitter great and a little half swing grounder to third and you will work out of it as the Cardinals lead to it's three three at the end of seven and a half and we'll be back after this word from your local station this is Corey McFerrin in New York the Royals tonight first team in twenty three years to pull off a triple play against the Red Sox in the fourth Mike Greenwell at second Ellis Berks at first Jim Rice against Rick Anderson here's the pitch and Rice pops one in the center field Willie Wilson coming on the sinking line drive makes the catch sees Greenwell off second doubles him off there the relay back to first Berks is out at triple play despite that play the Red Sox still lead nine to two in the seventh inning back down and back in Los Angeles as we go to the bottom of the eighth inning before a sellout crowd the Dodgers have a promotion going on this week and that's the perfect picture to describe it think blue there it is and there's a sign I love the Hollywood sign that graces a surrounding hillside here and Chavez ravine think blue as we go to the bottom of the eighth inning and Jose Gonzalez bats for Pena facing John Tudor and Gonzalez takes the first pitch low ball one one and all Jose Gonzalez called up from Albuquerque he's been up and down the last couple of years good speed and the Dodgers are hopeful that someday he'll blossom one and one talk about good speed they rate him right with Kirk Gibson maybe a little bit quicker a leadoff pinched double by Gonzalez in the bottom of the eighth inning and out of the top of the order position of the ball is so important you take a look at Terry Pennell he's playing in respecting Gonzalez's feet has no chance for this ball position of the ball the plate when I talk about John Tudor not overpowering was a change up down and in instead of down and away allowed him to pull the ball Steve sacks coming up here with nobody out Fitz Gerald is in on the grass at first guarding against the possible fun and Pendleton has to shorten up at third and sacks around a perfect one single by Steve sacks even in their worst days the Dodgers could always do the little things to win baseball game an absolute blueprint down the third base line Tudor did all he could a wild throw to first field it nicely by an infield bunt base hit by sacks now Anderson was Smith and O'Kendall playing halfway a short and second tell you this is a tough play for the runner at third base because on sharply hit balls to the middle of the infield you don't know whether they're coming home or not and you have to figure they would come home because that's the go ahead run on the bottom of the eighth inning so there's Gonzalez Cardinals have only three outs to create one run if they give up one here even if they get the double play so Kendall and Smith are both halfway they can go either to second if you're Gonzalez at third you've got to draw the throw home or actually make them think you're going home and prevent to make them look you back at third base and stay at third base with less than two outs so you can score on something other than a hit so there's anticipation on the offense with Gonzalez at third and also anticipation from your middle infielders if Gonzalez doesn't break Smith and O'Kendall will go to second if he breaks after that they'll come home Tudor delivers and the pitchers but Gonzalez has to stay at third that's a case there normally on the ground in the third you've got to go home and right there getting the second base Pendleton did his job by making a good play and Gonzalez did his job by not allowing Pendleton to go immediately to second to complete the double play that look cost time and Anderson was able to get the first base that's all Gonzalez can do and you have to think of those things before they take place now your middle infielders if they get the double play with Gibson running they're out of the inning so still first and third with Gibson at the plate perfect night for Kurt a 3 3 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning in the early innings if you're the runner at third you know that they're going to go for the double play if it's a scoreless ballgame or something like that in the second or third inning but later on in the game you're truly playing for one run this is a one run situation right now Gibson gets a very big out number two is Ozzie Smith makes the catch Smith trying to get away with dropping it and maybe seeing if he can catch somebody off base but the out had been recorded two down and Marshall is the batter here's Gibson's reaction well not very happy because he swung at a ball he swung at John Tudor's pitch instead of a pitch that he could drive want to categorize Kirk Gibson he's a better low ball hitter than a high ball hitter as you take a look at Whitey Herzog with Mike Marshall on deck John Costello excuse me yes John Costello out the bullpen for the Cardinals they're deciding do you want to pitch to Marshall or do you want to pitch around and pitch to John Shelby because again you're in a one run situation did it last time and a little pop up to third base so what Whitey Herzog's job is and Tudor knows he went to a young pitcher he'd say I don't know what I haven't faced these guys enough Tudor and I even if he tries to pitch to Marshall it's going to be the type of pitching where he's going to make him hit his pitch or none at all. At least that's what he's going to attempt to do very little success for Marshall against Tudor lifetime tonight he's grounded the third round of his short and he drew the intentional walk the only walk issued by Tudor in the game outside for one of the sort of watching a man third with nobody out now become a man the third with two down three three tie on the eight Gonzalez the go ahead run at third Anderson to his lead at first the chance of a wild pitch there's a big difference pitching around the hitter with a runner at third as opposed to a runner at second a wild pitch with a runner at second he ends up at third the other way he scores and they won't mess around three and all they were working around them and they'll just make sure ball four doesn't result in a wild pitch and that'll load them up for Shelby so once again Marshall gets the walk the last time they walked Marshall to get the Shelby he grounded out again Shelby better from the left side this year but as Jim pointed out historically a better right handed batter bases loaded two down pavilion shaking and that's the reason the camera shake foul away on one tell you Tommy Los Orto be thinking blue if they don't score this in black and blue and he's yelling encouragement but basically is wait wait and Shelby a very aggressive hitter but known to expand the strike zone and this is exactly what John Tudor wants to rather get him out with a ball than a strike doesn't want to get the ball over the plate unless he has to. What do you mean Broadway was on Sunset La Cienega you can see the frustration he's really has not pitched that poorly but at the crucial time to Gibson to Shelby he's made bad pitches where you can understand the pitch to Gibson because it was two balls and no strikes but to Shelby it was all in one I thought you set it up very nicely Jim outside ball to do it all the Cardinals in the ninth inning Smith McGee and Brunanski coming up the most difficult thing as a pitcher is once you've given up to go ahead runs is to get your composure back even if you're a veteran like John Tudor and get the next out and have a chance to have your team come back because if he doesn't get this hitter he's out of the ballgame no chance to win the ballgame in case the Cardinals rally and after talking to himself on the mound the two all pitch the Hamilton the major leagues top players showcase their skills in their midseason classic it's the nineteen eighty eight All-Star game next Tuesday night on ABC Sports alone with his thoughts and they're not very happy thoughts right now is John Tudor really angry with himself between innings venting his frustration and fade to black that's where the glove wound up nice fit yeah so Tudor angry with himself giving up the two run single the Shelby 5 3 the Dodgers on top and Tim Belcher comes out of the bullpen to try to wrap it up and hold it for Alejandro Pena you could sum up his personality as being a perfectionist which is probably one of the reasons he's been as successful he has been the last few years doesn't handle defeat or bad performance very well Ozzie Smith takes outside Belcher who was in the rotation has gone to the bullpen as the short man we mentioned before with the injury to Jay Howell he's the right handed closer for the moment and he tries to close it with a victory here before a sellout crowd and as Tudor agonizes Smith swings late and the count is one and two Belcher does have the kind of stuff that would be make a good closer he's got an overpowering fastball Rick Dempsey said earlier in a year a blazing fastball almost a strikeout for any he had Dempsey shaking his hand he had to take his glove off and Smith whacks one in the left field for a base hit so the Cardinals will not go down with a whimper yesterday they rallied with two out of the ninth inning on a two run homer by Brunansky to beat San Diego now Smith starts the ninth with a single and that's three hits tonight for Ozzie not a very good two strike hits to me through the fastball by him down and got it up and he just slapped at the left well he's trying to get Ozzie to hit the ball in the air the other way and he did but it was a line drive and not a fly ball that's one of the big differences between Ozzie Smith and years recent years past and him in the early eighties Willie McGee takes a strike Ozzie strong enough to get on top of that high fastball now I'm a little surprised Stubbs is holding Ozzie on the Dodgers do have a two run lead after all if not playing way behind him at least a step or two off the bag you take a better chance and I think Franklin Stubbs is going over to talk to Tim Belcher right now to say I'm either going to be behind him or I'm going to be a step or two behind him give you a better angle to get a ground ball and keep the winning run to come into home play not that you want to give Ozzie second base but the hitter is the run that's important that's the tying run not Ozzie Smith 0 2 is a little chopper down a short one of those in between what do I do with it. You shovel the sacks and have to turn it or do it yourself. He opts to do it himself and that's a tough play to make against the Willie McGee running down the line one out. I think what Dave was thinking also is to make sure of one and by tossing it to sacks the chances are not as great of one as touching the bag yourself. And I think that's the reason he went to second base and you really can't fault that reason Ozzie Smith in New York a couple of weeks ago made a very good point you have to protect your other infielder talking about the second baseman. He shovels the ball to sacks sacks can't see the runner he had a much better perspective and he did get the one and that's the most important out right there like to get to but you'll settle for one now Brunanski trying to repeat yesterday's heroics takes low ball one Dodger bullpen and left hander Jesse Roscoe and Tim Cruz the right hander is also throwing see the graphic another good matchup I think Brunanski does not get cheated with fastball pitchers he is going to get his rips and he does have holes you can pitch him down and away and high and tight but you can just about do that to anybody Cruz the righty or Roscoe the lefty just observing Ken Daly and Todd Warrell in the cardinal pen should we have a bottom of the night but the Dodgers lead five three Ozzie Smith who was forced at second back in the dugout with McGee at first base and won out I think of the Brunanski a better fastball hitter but I can remember the two run home run with the one run deficit hit off Mike Botecker there's a high fly ball a center field he got under it and Shelby gets under it to God Cardinals are down with their last out as they sent Terry Pendleton to the plate and Timmy you talked about trades Tim Belcher is the recipient the Dodgers got in the Rick Honeycutt trade so Honeycutt has helped as you look at it this consulate John Tudor he's helped the Oakland A's but here's Belcher in a closer roll with the Dodger bullpen and disarray to some effect because of of the injury to J how Tim's done also done a good job as a starter this year also a lonely voice in the wilderness right now go cards in a hurry and Stubbs will now play back of the runner at first base with McGee there and two down and Terry Pendleton all for three and hit by a pitch on that right arm in the third inning not much life on the bench at the moment down by two and three Stubbs behind McGee a victory would give the Dodgers a five and a half game lead over the Giants who have already lost the game runner goes and Pendleton it's a fly ball a shallow left field and it's a Fourth of July to celebrate John Tudor sits in agony as Tom Lasorda and the Dodgers celebrate Tudor goes all the way to lose and the Dodgers use more pitchers to win Shelby's two run single in the eighth inning is the difference as the Dodgers beat the Cardinals by a score of five to three and the standings right now in the National League West pending the outcome of Houston's game and they're at home and trailing Montreal at the moment Dodgers five and a half over the Giants Astros six behind Reds win they trail by nine and then San Diego and Atlanta there are the totals came against the wind Belcher the save Gibson the homer and Shelby the game winning hit and we'll be back in Los Angeles after this message and a word from your local station well the Dodgers will definitely go into the All-Star break with the lead in the Western Division they cement that tonight with a victory at Dodger Stadium where the crowd will stick around for the fireworks and they've already seen enough to make them very happy and they have thought blue all week and certainly tonight and John Shelby's two out single in the eighth inning is the difference as the Dodgers defeat the Cardinals five to three no Monday baseball of course next week but the All-Star game comes your way a week from tomorrow from Cincinnati and we'll be there we'll also be back in a moment ABC's Monday night baseball brought to you by the heartbeat of America today's Chevrolet by Nickelode one taste will tell you why the night belongs to megalov by hurt plus shampoo plus complete conditioner in one so you just wash and go and by AT&T the right choice final score Dodgers five Cardinals three and the executive producer of ABC's Monday night baseball is Jeffrey Mason tonight's telecast was produced by Kirk Gowdy Jr. directed by Craig Janoff our associate director Earl Priman assistance to the producer Bill Vanell and Patty Rodoloso technical manager Tug Wrencher unit manager Hal Danforth telecommunications manager Lee Kalinsky and our thanks as always Steve Hurt and to Alan Roth and until the All-Star game next week Al Michaels along with Jim Palmer and Tim McCarver saying good night from Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles with a reminder that Saturday ABC's wide world of sports features the U.S. Olympic boxing trials live except on the West Coast coming your way from Concord California a week from tomorrow ABC Sports presents exclusive coverage of the 1988 All-Star game live from Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium now stay tuned for ABC's nightline following your late local news over most of these ABC stations tonight's topic what comes next after the downing of an Iranian jetliner this has been a presentation of ABC sports recognized around the world
