Welcome back to UPN9 at the Fair. One of the things we talked about earlier is the fact that when you get to the end of the fair, television stations like to show up and show you all the tons of garbage that's at the fair. What you didn't know is that all these cups, what they do is they shred them, they ship them out to Michigan, and it comes back to you guys in different forms. One of the proudest things I have in my wardrobe is a coat that's made out of recycled pop bottles. So recycling is really important. It's a beautiful coat, you would never know it. People come up, they give me all kinds of compliments. But recycling is so important. And the Fair, folks here at the Fair, we have one specific office that makes sure that we get all the garbage, we collect it, and find out all the different things that we can do with garbage. We've got a little video we want to show you. So take a look at how we recycle. My name is Jeff Stewart and I'm with the Minnesota Office of Environmental Assistance. We have a great exhibit here at the Great Minnesota Get Together, Minnesota State Fair. We're located in the Empire Commons Building. And we have great video footage here. One of the things we have in the play in this game, it shows you how to separate your recycling and compost and reuse it in trash. There's all kinds of good information on how to reuse and recycle at home, the little things you can do. We also have some friendly staff here at our information booth. All kinds of good information, especially for educators. We have educators' orders for them, a lot of fact sheets for us. Most of the stuff is printed on two sides and on recycled paper. We have mail preference slips here you can mail in to get your name off. Some junk mail lists. Also at our exhibit here in the Empire Commons, we have a six foot by 12 foot video wall. Throughout the fair we're showing educational and informational videos regarding reducing the use of recycling. People here are sitting in these benches and they're made out of 100% high density polyethylene. That's milk jugs. It's great benches to sit in, people are enjoying them. And while they're sitting here eating, they're learning about what they can do to help make Minnesota a better place to live. Also on our exhibit, we have all kinds of good information on these kiosks where we have hand notes you can grab, stuff you can take home with you. One of the big things we're talking about now is a forest pollution prevention link, which happens September 21st through the 27th. We have informational packets of what you can do throughout the week to help make Minnesota a better place to live. And that's about it for our exhibit here at Minnesota State Fair. We'd like to have you stop down and check it out. And remember, reduce, reuse, recycle. Okay, and with me now is Art Dunn, who is with the Office of Environmental Assistance. And he's going to show us some tips on how to recycle and the things that you probably don't know that people should recycle, right? That's correct. All too often we think about recycling as the only thing we should be doing to cut down on the amount of stuff that we generate, the amount of stuff we throw away. Really it's reduce, reuse, and recycle. And a lot of times we can put a lot more emphasis on the first two, the reduction and the reuse, and then we recycle those things and we can't do something else with. We generate about 500 million tons of garbage in this state a year, and we're recycling about half of it, but we've got a long ways to go. I have my little goody bag here. Okay, what do you got? I can bring some things out on reduction. You go to the store, you can either buy items in bulk or you can buy them in individual packets. If you buy items in bulk, you normally can save money. You also reduce about 97% of the waste buying this versus this. So think about how you purchase things. Okay, now you also said there's a good way to, I'll take that from you, a good way to just conserve on paper cups and plastic cups, and you have something. That's correct. Reduction is another thing you can do is don't use disposable containers. This cup here is made out of recycled materials as well as can be reused many times. The coffee cup I have in my office is about 20 years old. Of course, it looks at it as well, but it's the same cup I've used every day for the last 20 years while I'm at work. I don't purchase the disposable cups. This bag that I have is another place where we can practice reduction as well as purchasing recycled. This is made out of the same material that your coat is made out of. That's made out of pop bottles? It's made out of recycled pop bottles. It's a bag you can take to the store with you. If you're only going for small items, you don't need to worry about paper or plastic. You bring your own bag with you, and you can use it many times over and over again. Now, you talked about water conservation. You have something in the bag to show us? Yes, we have a reduced flow shower head. These cost about $5. Morehead State University installed these in all of the showers in all of their dorms and saved over $8,000 a year on water and on water heating. So it's more than just the waste side of things. It's many things that we can do to cut down on the resources that we consume. You know, a lot of times people say, okay, I see the different bins. You got one for aluminum, you got one for paper, you got one for glass. You know, I really just don't want to be bothered. Besides, I'm just one person. What am I going to do? You know, my little contribution of garbage is going to mean one bit of thing, but that's not true. That's not true at all. Every little bit helps. And the reason why you want to have this material separated when it's collected, it's more efficient. Once you mix things up, then someone has to unmix it, and it's much easier to separate it at the source. Each one of us can do our own jobs to make sure that once these materials are collected by the people who come, then they can market those materials much more easily. There are many people who will take them and sometimes pay for them depending upon the materials. So it's critical that we do our part in order to make this whole system work. Well, Art, you've given us some valuable ideas. You got one more thing in that bag? I've got one more thing. I'd like to have you folks stop by our booth. We're in the Empire Commons building, right next to the Butterheads and the Maltz. We do have a lot of information there that you can browse. We have website address, telephone numbers that you can call us at. We also have pencils that are made out of recycled materials. We have them made out of blue jeans or denim. This one is made out of recycled currency or money, and it's about a million dollars, I think, worth of currency in here. A million dollars? This is my money pencil. That's your money pencil, and it's a reminder that you will save money if you shop smart and reduce trash. Well, Art, thank you so much for coming out here. Then the one last thing I want to mention, we're all residents of this spaceship Earth. Let's not waste it, and let's do what we can to do our part to save these resources. Thank you very much. Let's give Art a round of applause. Art Dunn from the Office of Environmental Assistance. Thanks. Let's take a seat real quick. We're going to go to a commercial break when we come right back. We're going to have Stefan, and you know what that means, a little bit of crazy, so come right back. Hi, everyone. It's Ruth Kozlak at the Fireside Corner Building at the Minnesota State Fair. For tugging fun, I know the one I'd really want to be. Like Tugger, the playful pup, and he could just be me. I'd pull and yank and fuss and tug and growl between big hugs. And when the tugging fun is through, I'd start again, wouldn't you? When it comes to tugging fun, he's a tug dog. Tugger, the playful pup from Playmates. Instant on, instant on, the flame's an instant phenomenon. All that comfort makin' me sing, goodness gracious, the flame's a thing. It's American, it's apple pie too, natural gas, it's red, white and blue. The flame's got a rhythm, the flame's got class, clean economic, natural gas. Letting all my praises ring, woo, baby, the flame's a thing. Brought to you by the Minnesota Blue Flame Gas Association. Welcome back to International Day at the State Fair and UPN9 at the Fair. I'm Robin Robinson and Stephans here. Hola. Hola, you did that so well. ¿Qué pasa? I'm sure your parents are so proud that they spent so much money and you only can say just that. And el hot dog, remember. Oh, I'm sorry. Los cervezas. Dos cervezas, por favor. I can say that. Is there anybody that can't say that? Unless they had too many cervezas. And then they can't say that. No. But besides your flair for foreign languages, you have a flair for the stage as well, do you not? I've heard this. I didn't even know it. You're a fine lesbian. Thank you very much. You're quite welcome. Yes, I had no idea. Yes, I was invited to partake in Tony and Tina's wedding. They did it here yesterday at the fair on the grandstand because did you know that yesterday they did their one thousandth Tony's and Tina's wedding here? I did not know that. One thousand everybody. Can you believe that? That's incredible. So of course they wanted to do it in grand fashion. Yeah. What better place than at the fair, right? Of course. So they came here to the grandstand and they invited a few people to make some special appearances and I was one of the lucky few that got to be a part of Tony and Tina's. So please watch with me, enjoy, for your approval, my stage debut, Tony and Tina's wedding. This is my wardrobe, huh? You know, I thought I was going to have my own dressing room. Do you know if something got goofed up or what happened there? Yeah, I understand that Ruth Kozlak took your dressing room. Ruth is in my dressing room? Yeah. How did that happen? Can I get a stage manager? It is now time for Tony and Tina to exchange vows for the one thousandth time. Absolutely, sure, sure. Hey, I'm with you, right? Yes, you are. Your evil sidekick? My evil sidekick, Ronaldo. Ronaldo? Stefan Reynolds. He is now to be among you. The motorcycle is going to come in, ride around, and we're going to go up on stage and try to get Tina back. Both of us? Both of us. We're both going. Did we both used to date Tina? No, I did, but I told you you had to come with me. There we go, we're going to get her, we're going to get Tina. Okay, okay. Now what do we do? We wait for another hour until we actually go on. Oh, good. I hope I can get that back. I think you can. We'll work on it. Now, Michael and his evil sidekick, Ronaldo, will make a grand entrance in this motorcycle right here. But because they don't want the actors to get hurt, because that could be bad, the show wouldn't be able to go on. We've actually got body doubles to do this very dangerous stunt. And it's like looking in the mirror. This is uncanny. Woo! Yeah! Hey, hey! Yeah! Ah! Stand on me! Come on! Stand on me! Come on! Undoubtedly on this motorcycle is Tina's ex-boyfriend and Tony's arch nemesis, Michael Just. Look who's back, baby! Come on! Just who do you think you are barging in like this? And who is this Ronaldo standing next to you? Are you talking to me? I'm talking to you. Michael, is he talking to me? Tell him who you are, Ronaldo. You've heard of the Chicago 7? Have you there, buddy? I'm one of the Minnesota 9. One, two, three! Yeah! Bravo! Oh, thank you very much. Thank you. Yes. Yes, what a milestone. One thousand weddings. And of course, if you want to see any more of the one thousand plus weddings, you do so at the Hay City Theater, and that is a gas. Have you done Tony and Tina's Wedding? No, I haven't. Do you get to go back and do that again at the theater as well? Do you get to reprise your stage role? No, I'm worried that maybe I would not equal my brilliance on the grandstand stage. I just know that you were fabulous. You were fantastic. You just took over the whole production. Maybe they're just afraid that you'll come back, you'll upstage everyone. You're too kind. You're too kind. The thing is, is that I heard that it was not completely fulfilling for you. It was one thing missing. Yeah, you're right, Robin. They escorted me out of there kind of fast right before the show was over. I wonder what that means. I don't know. I think it was a security thing. They didn't want me to get mobbed. I never got to take my bow. Well, you know, I would think it would only be fitting if the audience here would let you live that magic just once. Can we all give a standing ovation for Stephen? Stephen Reynolds, ladies and gentlemen, master actor. Standing ovation for Stephen. Bravo! Bravo! Ronaldo, bravo! Bravo! Thank you for indulging me, Robin. The magic is yours. Oh, that was wonderful. The magic is yours. I'm so glad that we could fulfill your dreams. Okay? Hey, I'm back tonight. You are? What are you going to do? Oh, I'm going to be out and about. You know, it is International Day. It is International Day. So we're going to celebrate diversity by seeing what's in people's bags, you know, because there's all kinds of a variety of stuff. That's a personal thing, man, looking in people's bags. Yeah, that might be kind of dangerous, but hopefully we won't get slapped. It could be fun. Yep. No slapping, no punching. So if Stephen stops you, just don't hit him. Be kind. Be very kind. And we'll look into your bag. And then you're going to give us a little feature tonight at 9 and 10 about what you're going to do? That's it. I'll be looking at people's bags. Okay. Then we will see you then. Excellent. Thanks, Stephen. Everybody, Stephen Reynolds! Hey! Ronaldo! Ronaldo. The evil Ronaldo. Right now, we are going to get an update on what else is happening at the fair. Sam Scammon is here. Sam? Hi, everybody! How's everybody enjoying their afternoon at the fair? What a fantastic Friday it is and what a fantastic fair it has been weather-wise. Beautiful! Yeah. No doubt about it. And speaking of beautiful, we have our sky pick for the day that we would like to share with all of you, and check this out. Check out this great sky pick because this young lady actually drew a picture of you guys, the people. She drew the people! And there's UPN, and there's the umbrella, or the tree, and there's the sun drinking some lemonade and having a snow cone, and watching the show are all the people. Can you see yourselves? There you go. And Jamie Scott is the person that drew that. And Jamie, how are you today? Good. And Jamie, where are you from? Chanhassen. Chanhassen? Did you know that you are my neighbor? No. Yes, because I am from Chanhassen, too. Where do you live? Um, Lake Susan Hills Drive. Can you bring me by some ice cream sometime? Sure. Oh, what a nice young lady. Jamie, thank you very much. Finally, the last question for Jamie. Jamie, how come you're not in school today? Um, we don't start school until next Tuesday. Good answer! Good answer, Jamie. She doesn't start school until next week. So thanks, Jamie. Thanks for the sky pick. Owen, you know what? I have something for you. A pick, a t-shirt, a sky pick t-shirt for coloring that for me. So, Stefan gave you a t-shirt earlier. I'm giving you one right now. And if you're coming out to the fair tonight, it's going to continue to be a fantastic evening. Temperatures are going to be falling out of the 80s into the 70s. And then into tomorrow, the heat, the humidity return. We're going to be looking at a high approaching 90 degrees. Then it will be a little cooler, just a little cooler, Sunday and Monday. Robin? Okay, thanks, Sam. Coming back, we're going to meet a buffalo, so don't go away. Hooray! Frosted Cheerios, so good this box never closes. 32, please. You're going to want a lot more than that. Sorry, break time. Hope no one's in a rush. See the Campfire Plus much more at the State Fair next to the Home Improvement Building. Buy now and save 15% on any gas fireplace, plus get a free standard vent kit. Fireside Corner has six Minnesota locations with the largest heart showrooms in the Midwest. Monday at the Fruit Roll-Ups Factory. Mayhem! Pure mayhem! Come on! Watch out! She's gonna go! Hey! It's new Factory Explosion Fruit Roll-Ups, a blast of fruity flavor, colors and factory parts peel-outs. New Factory Explosion Fruit Roll-Ups, exploding for just a short time. You know, it was all my idea. What fun Fruit Roll-Ups will we roll out with next? Special treat. Now, one of the things that we'd like to do is make sure that everybody gets to see the animals. And I'm here with Jim and Dave and a very special guest. Now, who is this? David, guys. And? Tim Necbel. And who is our friend? This is our little friend Scout. He's a four-month-old orphan calf. And we had a cow that had trouble calving. And so she abandoned it because she was sick herself. And so we went out two days later and then we found the calf laying out in the field. And the calf was almost dead. And we took it to the university, to the large animal hospital. And Dr. Susan McClanahan nursed it back to health. And it was 70 pounds at the time. And today it weighs 220 pounds. Now, how big will Scout get? When he's full grown, he'll weigh over a ton. Wow. Now, are buffalo a rare thing in Minnesota? Not so much anymore. We have 167 members in the Minnesota Buffalo Association. So we've grown. We started five years ago with 25 people. Wow. Now, buffalo, most people don't really know the history of buffalo. We've gotten far away from that. So why don't you give us the history of buffalo in this country? Okay. They were slaughtered and went down to numbers in the range of 800 or less head. And then the small pockets of buffalo left in Yellowstone and other places in the United States were brought together by parks like Custer Park and Wind Cave and other parks, national and state. And they've kind of taken over. And now the buffalo farmers are actually getting a chance to buy them from the parks. Buffalo and the country, we've roamed the country in millions. And many native people used them, not only looked at them as a religious icon, but also used it for survival. And then as years went by, people used to hunt buffalo as sport. Is that correct? Yeah. They hunted them down to almost extinction. But now the population is what in Minnesota? Probably about 6,000 animals. Now, people are starting to get used to the idea of, and I hate saying it in front of scouts, but they're starting to get used to the idea of alternative meat. Oh yes, it's such a healthy meat. The bison has 70% less fat than beef, and 50% less cholesterol, and a third more protein and twice the thymine, and it's a non-allergenic meat. Okay, now Scott has a special trick with you. Can we get Scott to do his trick? I understand that Scott loves Dan so much. He'd come in the house, he'd start to suck on my ear. So today he'll still do that, and I hope when he weighs a ton, he'll do the same thing. He's such a friendly little pet. That's an international language right there, so we want to thank Scott, Jim, and Dan for being out here. Thank you for coming to the fair. We hope you had a good time. We'll see you later. Join us for Minnesota 9 News at 9 and at 10 with Jeff and Angela. Bye-bye, I'm Robin Robinson. UPN 9 at the Fair is brought to you by All American Recreation, all we sell is farming, Fireside Corner with the largest showroom of burning displays in the Midwest, and the Minnesota Blue Flame Gas Association. This weather update brought to you by Minnesota Grown Fresh Produce. Hi again, everybody. It's me, meteorologist Sam Scammon. Looks like a fine Friday evening to head out to the fair. Under mainly clear skies, temperatures will be falling out of the 80s into the 70s, and then eventually later on this evening into the 60s. UPN would like to make an animated announcement. Dilbert, the television series, is coming! Angela Hampton on Minnesota 9 News at 10. Change your 10. I hope I'm not getting mixed signals here. Because I'd hate to think the fact that you're a few years older than me is putting you off. I mean, what is age, really? Would you shut up? You're winning. In that case, what should tomorrow look like? Ooh, three days in a row. I don't know, that's starting to sound kind of serious. I mean, how well do we know each other, really? Okay, well, let's start with me. Well, that's pretty much it. Don't talk about yourself, I want to know everything. Everything. Yeah, everything. Okay, uh, why don't we go back to my place? Yay. Eric, if you're going to have a relationship with me, there's somebody else that you're going to have to have a relationship with as well. This is Diana. Oh, no. This is too good to be true. You're vampires, aren't you? Okay, go ahead. No, no. Diana is the babysitter. Ooh, role-playing. Okay, I want to be the commander-in-chief of the allied armies. No, Diana is my babysitter. Okay, I get it. Yeah, yeah. Diana is my babysitter. Hi, Mommy. Uh, Mommy, that would be like... Eric, I would like for you to meet my son, Ryan. How fire-breathing dragon Scorch eats orices.
