...singled out for sheer annoyingness, where a couple stands in awe of a single grape nut. Also making this year's baddies list, Guess Jeans. Adweek says their ads can hardly be interpreted as anything other than sex relationships between people. And the Energizer Battery ads featuring Aussie spokesperson Jaco, who they claim looks like a post-nuclear punk. It's true. Adweek also announced the Tin Trumpet Awards for those who have hit new low notes in advertising, and included on that list, Capitol Records for allowing the Beatles song Revolution to be used in a Nike commercial, American Express for depicting card carriers as fools constantly losing their wallets, and Adidas for naming men's cologne after sneakers. As the Winter Olympic Games sneak up on us, ABC is preparing to broadcast a hot event on the ice for fans of grace under pressure. America's finest amateur figure skaters will square off in Denver to decide who will be representing the United States. For the first time, ABC Sports will air the U.S. Figure Skating Championships live in prime time. Always one of the most popular of the Olympic contests, ABC is hoping that the evening exposure will build interest in the upcoming games in Calgary, as well as creating new fans for the sport. It's a very entertaining sport, and to see it in the quiet of the evening when people are really calm and ready to see good competition and an artistic competition as figure skating is and can be, I think it's very good for our sport. Many figure skating stars have gone on to careers in show business, and this year's competition has some very strong athletes who could become household names in the future. We have many stars already. We have three wonderful women, Debbie Thomas, Jill Trenory, and Karen Kedavian. One of them is going to emerge even more significantly as the Olympics come along. ABC will telecast the championships tomorrow night and begins its coverage of the 15th Winter Olympic Games on February 13th. Fahid from the Untouchables movie has touched off a new NBC TV movie with a similar storyline called Man Against the Mob. It's billed as the struggle of a group of honest detectives who try to keep Los Angeles free from organized crime. LA could be the biggest prize of them all, but if we want it, we're going to go for it now. George Papard stars in his 40s drama as one of the few honest cops on the Los Angeles police force. Man Against the Mob finds him leading a special task force determined to run a gang of Chicago mobsters out of town. But Man Against the Mob is also a love story, says Papard, after his character meets Catherine Harrold. Man Against the Mob will air on NBC's Sunday night at the movies this weekend. Bob Hope is back at home in Southern California after completing another in a long line of whirlwind USO tours. This tour was taped for an NBC special called Bob Hope's USO Christmas Show from the Persian Gulf and has Hope doing what he's famous for in front of his favorite kind of audience. I just want you boys to man your battle stations and back down the hatches. Hope, who's been entertaining American troops for 46 years, took Barbara Eden, Connie Stevens, and country singer Lee Greenwood along on this trip. There's nothing like a good audience. They're the best audience when they receive you. And the treatment you get, you know, that's better than I get at home. Now that special airs Saturday night. And although Hope would not say he absolutely wouldn't tour for the troops again, he wishes there isn't a need to next Christmas. There's a hot new movie called Action Jackson due out early next month. And to heat up the action even more, it's being accompanied by a new single from the Pointer Sisters. The song is He Turned Me Out and featured in the Pointer's video are Action Jackson stars Carl Weathers and Vanity. The hard driving music is accompanied by a storyline that has the sultry Vanity beating her macho costar in a heated billiard match. She comes in, does a job on me, and what can I say? When a beautiful woman, which is what usually happens with a beautiful woman, you know, they wipe the floor up with you and leave you there bleeding, figuratively speaking. All you can do is smile and say, well, it was good while she was here. And the Pointer Sisters jumped at the chance to participate in the videotaping. You gotta be ready, you know. That's part of the trouble. That's part. When they call you, you gotta be ready. Say, let's do a video next week. Okay. Let's go. Sort of like the Marines, you know. Attacks. Coming up next is America Ready for the EastEnders. The hit British TV show Comes West. And ahead, this American upholds law and order, but do you know the cartoon crime fighter he played on television? Ready? One, two, up, down. If your image of England is upper crust, brace yourself for a big revelation. The BBC series EastEnders premieres on many public broadcasting stations tonight. What you'll see is the Cockney side of London. We are having the baby. We, not you. Yeah. Who do you think you're shouting at then? You, you! Well, just you remember all of ya. This is my house, so. Premiering with a two and a half hour episode and then airing every Monday through Friday, the half hour long program centers on the lives of average working class people in London's East End. It's a far cry from life at Dallas' South Fork. We do everyday life like rapes and muggings and single parent families and things like that and drug abuse and that. So that isn't always shown on those sort of soap pop frizz in America. Do you think Chummy's behind this? Cutting us out because he thinks we're in the fiddle, eh? And with fast talking Cockney accents coming into American living rooms, will viewers be able to get a hold of what's happening in Albert Square? I think so and I think part of the fun is going to be getting familiar with Cockney and having new, new words in your vocabulary. We learnt to understand Brooklyn, so never underestimate Americans. And just in case English doesn't sound like English, FOX TV's Tracy Ullman will be tutoring those watching tonight's debut episode during its breaks. When Mark Fowler greets someone he says, watcha, what he means is, hello? Now I've got a flash for ya. If we don't stop mucking about and bunking off, Auntie B will get in a proper old flat full of aggro and give me the push. And after they're educated properly, Ullman hopes that once and for all the Colonials get the real picture of life in the UK. So much of the stuff you get here is all about the upper classes and about Princess Diana and Prince Charles and really they are like half percent of our population and not really representative of Britain at all. You know, anyone for tennis and jolly hockey sticks and all that sort of stuff, nobody talks like that at all anymore, darling. Only in sort of very bad BBC productions. And so watch these tenders and see what people are really like in England now. Get with the Times America. These tenders will air five nights a week on most public TV stations. What'd she say? Phil Collins, also from Britain, is a risk taker. As a child he gave up a promising career as a stage actor to become a drummer. Then as a drummer he established a solo career as a singer. And now singing is on the back burner as he pursues acting. Conspiracy to obtain for sale a felony. Post-carsports and an assortment of fraudulent schemes, right? I'm a regular little ne'er-ever, aren't I? Phil Collins' guest appearance on Miami Vice two years ago caused him to get bitten by the acting bug. And as a result he's now playing the title role in his first feature film, Buster. When this opportunity came to do Miami Vice I took it because they were nice people and very friendly. So I did that and I enjoyed it and I was kind of, I thought I was okay in it. So I said, you know, if there's any scripts come in, you know, I'll get my manager Tony Smith reads them and he gives them to me if he thinks they're good. And he gave me this one and I read it and loved it and I could see me doing it. The whole world watched as the London police tried to solve one of Britain's most infamous crimes, the Great Train Robbery. Buster is the true story of one of the thieves, Buster Edwards, who flees to Mexico to escape capture with his wife June, played by Julie Walters. She eventually becomes homesick and returns to London without him. It is a very romantic story and it's more about the romance than the robbery. The robbery is just a small part of it. He couldn't stand it out there without her. And he knew when he came back that he was going to go to prison. That was inevitable because there were, you know, the eyes of the world were basically looking for these people. And he came back for the love of his wife. As soon as he came in the country, they knew that he was in the country and they found him. And he only had a couple of days with her before he went inside for nine years. So is Phil Collins, the actor, going to continue his career as a musician? I am going to do this, see how good it looks. I'm enjoying it so there's no problem with that. But just see how good I am at it. And I won't know until I've seen it really. And if I'm good at it, I'll do it again. But I'm doing another album on my own so that will come out probably towards the end of the year. And there is a film on the vague horizon which I would love to do because of the people involved in it. So yes, I'll try and fit this in amongst all the other things I do. A businessman who moonlights as a real life cop got his professional start as a TV crime fighter. The story behind this transformation unfolds in Where Are They Now? What actor played the role of Ken Madison on both Surfside 6 and Bourbon Street Beat? Who later co-starred with Walter Brennan in the comedy series The Tycoon? Who nine years after his biggest TV success returned to television with the Saturday morning show Westwind. Van Williams was Britt Reid, editor and publisher of the Daily Sentinel, but better known as the crime fighter The Green Hornet. The 1966 series lasted just one season, but it made an impression on viewers that for many fans has hardly diminished. I still get quite a bit of fan mail. I understand there's kind of a Green Hornet cult out there. What's amazing to me is they still recognize my voice. Suppose I set up a demonstration, just the three of us, Trump, you and me, open and above board. I can always tell when I'm on the phone that all of a sudden there's a big dead pause there and they said, you sound like the Green Hornet. Williams and his servant Cato, played by the late Bruce Lee, were popular, but just as he'd foreseen, Williams was typecast. Private eyes have come a long way in 20 years. Tom Selleck is a friend of mine and Tom is playing himself and he's no mask, no nothing and he's Tom Selleck. That's what he really is. I never had a chance to do that on that show. I always kind of looked at it as a business and I think that was primarily the reason when I was doing the Green Hornet I decided to get out of it because it was not a good business. In the late 60s, after a decade as an actor, Williams shifted careers. Today he's a successful businessman running a home security company, but no doubt his greatest satisfaction comes from his work as a reserve officer with the Malibu Sheriff's Department. Tom Williams has managed to turn his TV crime fighter role into a real life passion. I really enjoy it. People have asked me a lot why I got involved with it and why I still do it and everything else and I really don't have an answer for that. Maybe it's part of doing a little civic duty, it might be part of it. There's a real need out there I think for an auxiliary or reserve corps of people to get involved in this. Well Mary, it's hard to believe it's Friday and that means it's time to check it out. Control ourselves. Okay. Well we just introduced you to the star of the Green Hornet TV series. The Green Hornet was also a comic book hero, one of a number of popular characters of the 1930s and 40s which included Batman and Captain Marvel. Now interestingly enough at least one reference book claims that Captain Marvel is modeled after a well known actor so we decided to check it out. The books claim Marvel was drawn to resemble Fred McMurray and as you can see there is a strong similarity. The company that owns the Captain Marvel rights says the story is true. He does look like him. That was Fred McMurray pumping iron. Really? Did he know anything about that? We know when we called McMurray's office they said they'd never heard this story before but anyway Fred congratulations for earning a place in comic book history. Now this weekend most Americans are going to be glued to their TV sets for the latest round in the NFL playoffs. One viewer asked a football trivia question that was just too good to pass up. He wanted to know what the little label on the back of all football helmets says so we checked it out. This is the label and it's on every pro and college helmet. It says do not use this helmet to butt, ram or spear an opposing player and it warns of the ramifications including injury and penalties. And I'm sure everyone in both leagues completely abides by that little rule. All I'm glad about is the fact that you're holding that thing. It weighs a ton. That's right Mary I want you to wear that the rest of the show. I wore it for the morning and it was just too much for breakfast. Anyway we want to thank the Denver Broncos for loaning us this helmet. It's got to be FedExed immediately. They needed something for a game on Sunday. I think so that's what they're saying right. Yeah well anyway when we come back Jack Klugman he doesn't get the helmet but he gets star treatment. No I can't this thing won't. It began as pure research. Going into another person's dreams. We've done it Dennis. Not once but three times. It soon became a living nightmare. Dennis Quaid and Kate Capshaw. You just keep yourself alive. Where dreams end and reality begins in Dreamscape.
