I hope this works. Hello everyone I'm John says and I'm Mary Hart Americans own more television sets than ever but according to a newly released Nielsen survey they are watching them less viewing time is down from a survey taken two years ago and the culprit may be found on the shelves of your local video store. The survey concludes that because more than half of the nation's homes have VCR's people are running to their local video stores to purchase and rent the latest movie releases rather than sitting in front of the television set to watch prime time TV the number of viewing hours per family dropped dramatically over last year and one industry analyst believes the networks are at fault. They're repeating programs more and so if you've seen it there's less of an opportunity to keep you in the audience a lot more channel switching zipping and zapping of the industry phrases that are used and people tuning out or tuning to alternative media's. In addition to VCR use audiences have been switching their channels to cable stations more than 50 percent of American homes have cable and it's estimated that more than a third of all television households can receive 30 or more channels. A lot of people who are just getting cable or just realizing hey I bought this VCR I can go out and rent a video cassette and watch it or I can tape a program and watch it at my own leisure and my own time think that what's also happening is that a lot of people are taking control of their viewing and are realizing that they're not slaves to network prime time anymore so that obviously has an impact. Overall the network's share of viewing audience continues to be eroded by cable and home video dropping from just over 72 percent last year to 68 and a half percent in the latest tally. All but one of the us most beautiful women have starred in movies and by the way back in October Entertainment Tonight picked Emmanuelle Berte as one of the hot young film actresses to watch. Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder but one of the top beauties of all time feels its only skin deep. Sophia Loren is more concerned about beautiful roles. I never consider myself very beautiful so I always try to do things in my profession like I wanted to emphasize my acting most of it than my beauty because beauty if you have it anyway doesn't last very long. So I mean I always try to do the best I could in choosing in my profession roles that could make me go forward instead of going backwards. Loren will star in the upcoming NBC mini series The Fortunate Pilgrim as an unglamorous Italian immigrant struggling to keep her family together. No one knew how they got away with it but for a few brief shining moments the Smothers Brothers tweaked the nose of the establishment and spun music, comedy and political satire into a hit series for CBS. Then at the height of their popularity CBS lowered the boom. On CBS February 3rd at a 20 year reunion Tom and Dickie will exact their revenge. Eric Burns reports. It was the Smothers Brothers social commentary that made CBS pull the plug on their show back in 1969 but sometimes even in television you can go home again. The Smothers rehearsing for next month's special have assembled most of their original co-stars and writers including Steve Martin who was among their Emmy winning writing staff and later a cast member. Times have changed and they want the excitement too just like we like the excitement. It works for both of us. They're interested in a little bit of the conflict that people can remember 20 years ago. That adds to the spice of the mix. I'm very excited to be here. 20 year reunion show with my close personal friends Tom and Dave Smothers. For some of the old regulars getting back together was essential. The reason I'm doing it is everybody thought I was dead so now I'm not okay. It is just so much fun and from looking at the run through today it's something that Variety should be on television today I think. I thought you said passed away. The obvious thing that comes to mind about you doing a 20th anniversary show is the irony of doing it on the network. Not the network you left but the network that kicked you off 20 years ago. I think a lot of our audience feels the same way. It feels denied that the show was taken off in its prime and we do a few digs here and there. Do you do everything CBS tells you to do? Yep. You do? Yep. You do? Tell me would you jump off a bridge if CBS told you to do it? Not again. How do the masses feel about The Last Emperor? You'll find out next in our exclusive movie track. The movies The Last Emperor and Empire of the Sun were released about the same time. Although the titles are similar, moviegoers know the difference between the two and are casting a vote for their favorites with their ticket dollars. Even though Emperor is in one seventh the number of theaters, it's earning almost half as much as Empire. That's a remarkable performance. You know what it means to be an Empress. You are an Empress. The Disney Company announced that Three Men and a Baby has become its all-time top-grossing movie. It's earned over $85 million in its initial release, beating out previous record holder Ruthless People. Disney also reportedly has plans for a sequel with Ted Danson, Steve Guttenberg, and Tom Selleck starring, and Leonard Nimoy directing once again. And the producers of a movie set in a small New England town are hoping their story will capture some of those ticket dollars. Bristol, Vermont. Classic small town New England, the kind of place where just about everyone knows everyone else. The kind of town where it isn't too hard to imagine what it looked like almost half a century ago during World War II. And Bristol, Vermont proved to be a perfect location for a film called The Wizard of Loneliness. The Wizard of Loneliness stars Leah Thompson and 11-year-old Lucas Haas who made his mark in Witness. The movie is about a boy who comes to live with his grandparents after his mother dies and his father goes off to war. I'm kind of sad and mad at my mom and my dad for letting me go and being kind of mean to me. It is pretty challenging actually. I've never been in a movie quite like it. Leah Thompson plays Lucas's aunt. He sees all these tragic things happen to me and he sees how vulnerable I am and I think he learns through my character to open up his heart. For the people of Bristol, turning back the clock to the 40s has meant an influx of 1980s dollars. We've heard some suggestions that a million to a million and a half dollars is being left here. They changed the window around to make it look a little more like the 1940s which is the time of the movie but did not impair our business at all and for the most part it's helped our business because there's 70 more people in town. The Wizard of Loneliness is scheduled for release in July. Shooting in a small town created some interesting situations for the producers. They had to convert the local barber shop into a drug store but then had to shoot around people getting their hair cut and when they asked the Bristol townspeople to bake a few pies for a Thanksgiving dinner, they wound up with 46 of them.
