The Cyndi Lauper's and the Tina Turner's and the Madonna's. I mean, those ladies were out of town or wherever. And then there was the Madonna and Naomi, the Judds. Well, you know, they always look like they're going someplace special when they go to these kind of things, and I like that. You may not always like the way they dress, but boy, they're festive, and I appreciate that. It's special for them. Can we assume that cleavage is in? Well, it is for mama. Whitney Houston. Well, you see, I like Whitney in this outfit. I didn't care for her in what she sang in. It's a designer's dream as far as her body. Oh, I'd like to get my hands on her. I bet. Oh, I like the way Olivia looks. It was fun and young and squeaky clean and just looked like her. You know, it looks like she always has the right attitude about how she should look. Doc Severinsen is not exactly unnoticeable. No, but he's always dressed up. I mean, he always has something kind of wild on. Oh, Herbie Hancock. Well, he looks kind of fun. I just don't think that looks like a formal outfit, and that bothers me. He looks like he's going to a football game. Yeah. Are these guys a nightmare or what? Now, these guys have class. That's really, you know, that's the way I dress. Oh, sure. Right. Give us your overall grade. Was this a boring year? You hit it right on the nose. Everybody looked nice. Nobody looked terrible. But basically, they just looked nice. They didn't look exciting. I miss Bette Midler and I miss Cyndi Lauper and I miss Madonna. And you always say, oh, they look just terrible, but you pay attention to them because they were exciting. You know, my mother always said, oh, I hated the way she looked. I hate the way she looked. But she doesn't remember anybody else. She only remembers the ones she hated. And usually they're the ones that look exciting. This year, your mother would probably have worn all those outfits. Absolutely. She could have worn anything on that stage except for maybe Olivia Newton-John. And I've been very happy in it. America's favorite television commercials for 1986 were revealed in a published report by Adweek Magazine today. Thirty thousand consumers put Isuzu's liar ad in tenth place among last year's ads. And in ascending order, Bill Cosby's Jell-O commercials came in ninth. The infamous herb of Burger King fame placed eighth. And Light's popular Funny Lights was ranked seventh. Those rustic Hucksters Bartles and James were sixth. Pepsi Cola's Michael J. Fox spots placed fifth. Miller Lite was the fourth most popular campaign. The California Raisin Advisory Board came in third with its Motown theme. The runner-up placing second was McDonald's highly praised Silent Persuasion ad. And the winner? If you had listened to the advice of the Hollywood experts, singer Willie Nelson would have abandoned his dream. It took him more than a decade, but he saw it to the end. Now we can see it on the big screen. Redheaded Stranger is based on his 1975 concept album of the same name. It's a gothic western rooted in love and loss, sin and redemption. Unwilling to sell the rights to a major studio and insisting on playing the title role himself, the picture took Nelson almost 12 years to get to the screen his way. I just didn't think anyone knew the project well enough to make the movie as well as I did. I knew the songs, I had written most of them. I knew the album, I sang it every night. I knew what scenes should be where and what the guy should say and how the other guy should react. Because I'd done it all the time, every night for years. I just didn't think that I could put that through another two or three minds and have it come out on the screen the way I wanted to see it. Nelson shot the film in and around his native Austin, Texas. He took a risk and put the financing together himself and learned a lesson about partnerships right from the start. Things got hectic real quick because everyone was there, all the stars were in town, the cameras were rolling. And me and the money guy had a falling out. Lord, the devil's own disciples have gathered in our door today. On shaky ground with cash depleted, the redheaded stranger's salvation came as if by a miracle. A Boston woman and a fan of Nelson's anteed up a half a million dollars as an investment in the production. Out of the blue, here come the lady with the big $500,000 check and it was just enough to take us on out. Nelson said the wait was well worth it. This one has been an obsession for like 12 years and it's like labor pains for all those years that I had to get it out. I thought I'd stay with it like Rocky. Willie Nelson is back on the road again playing a concert Friday over in Yuma, Arizona. The outlook at the video stores this weekend is just about as bleak as the winter weather, but Eric Burns has discovered a few good prospects among the duds in this week's video preview. Eric? Before we get to that, let me ask both of you, if you saw Aliens. And you liked it? Yeah, I thought it was a good movie. Terrific. Well, what would you say if I told you that the person who reviews videos on entertainment tonight is in that tiny minority of people who didn't like it? This could very well be the stupidest person on the face of the earth. Well, he may be right, but I can't help it. I thought Aliens was poorly acted, poorly paced, and filled with stereotypical characters. I guess we're not going to be leaving now, right? I'm sorry, nude. You don't have to be sorry. It wasn't your fault. Ta-da! Why is Danny DeVito so happy? Because somebody just kidnapped his wife, played by Bette Midler. Nice butt. The butt belongs to her kidnapper Judge Reinhold, whose attempts to make the kidnapping a success run into a lot of complications. Do I look that stupid? Yes, you do. This is Ruthless People, a crass comedy which is the week's best bet. Other movies new to the video store this week include a highly regarded, but somewhat cold and unengaging French film called Vagabond, about a woman living on the underside of life, and 42nd Street, the classic Busby Berkeley musical. As you saw, 42nd Street, originally in black and white, has been colorized. Next week, another old movie, a superb old movie, which has not been colorized, but has been restored to its original length and condition. It was quite a project and worth it, and it's out on home video next week. Can the two of you wait? Not a chance. What a tease. When we come back, Ricardo Modelbon tells us about his first star-studded lunch at the MGM Commissary. I am on the contract to this studio with all those people, you know, people that I had admired from afar when I was growing up in Mexico. I couldn't believe it. I was a part of that. And that's a Hollywood that will forever live in my mind, that I shall never, never forget. Now people react that way to meeting him. Yeah, I tell you, the guy's delivery is amazing, whether he's telling a story or acting or even selling a car. Right, it is. He's a real gentleman. Tune in tomorrow as we investigate, speaking of gentlemen, the qualities that drive women wild in Hollywood's Sexiest Men Part II. And Jonathan Winters may not be one of Hollywood's sexiest, but he certainly ranks as one of the craziest. We'll try to rein him in just long enough for an interview. Tom Cruise shot the fame in Risky Business. The movie is now out on Warner Home Video. And here now as we say goodbye is the scene that helped make Cruise your choice for Hollywood's Sexiest Man. Take care. Bye-bye. – Just take those old records off the shelf. I've never listened to them by myself. Today's music ain't got the same song.
