Music Good evening and welcome to Movie Legends. Our film tonight comes from India and was made by one of that country's leading directors, Shyam Benegal in 1975. This was Benegal's second feature film. Nishant, or Night's End, takes place in a small village in the year 1945. A schoolteacher, played by Girish Karnad, newly arrived from the city with his wife, Shabana Azmi, and their baby son, soon discovers that there's no law and order in this remote backwater. Provincial and federal police forces seem to have given up on the place, which is run by a local chief with three dissolute brothers who rape and steal with seeming impunity. That's the background for a gripping drama which pulls few punches in its denunciation of feudal India. The performances from Karnad and Azmi as the beleaguered couple are particularly good, and the film has some links with the powerful Sam Peckinpah thriller, Straw Dogs, which was made a few years earlier. Here it is then, Night's End. Thanks for watching!
