Born Kaim Topal in Tel Aviv in 1935, Topal had already established a budding acting career
before he achieved international fame and a Best Actor Oscar nomination, incidentally,
as Tevye in tonight's Fiddler on the Roof.
His first acting experience came during his years in the Israeli army, believe it or not,
at which time he appeared both on the stage and in several Israeli-made films.
From 1967 to 1968, he appeared on stage as Tevye in the London production of Fiddler on the Roof.
Movie audiences will also remember Topal as the private detective who falls in love with him.
