And so other people's money led the list of this week's top movies but the people who doled out their money to make it number one for the most part are now wishing it was other people's money. What have you been living on Mars Yorgie? It's called a corporate takeover. A little more than half those people polled in our exclusive movie track thought the film was above average or outstanding. Only 10% said they would fork over their money to see other people's money if they had the chance to see it again. Can I talk about what I want to talk about? What's that? You and me sweating between satin sheets. Danny DeVito received raves as the slimy corporate raider. One person said he was perfect for the parts. Another called him a hoot. And eight out of ten people picked his performance as the best thing in this movie. It's simple. I do it all the time. The responses went downhill from there. One called the film slow-moving. Another claimed it is, quote, sexist and offensive. And a third was disappointed by a, quote, gutless Hollywood ending. In fact, the ending drew terrible reactions from many people but it was not the original ending included in the film. Studio had felt the first ending was too depressing and shot this new version that drew all the fire from movie track audiences. Well, the endings of Chuck Norris' films are usually no surprise to his legion of fans. Norris hasn't become a one-man Hollywood wrecking crew by being a loser. But it may surprise those who think of him as the man who draws the line between good and evil. This time, Norris is stepping over it. In his 19th film, Norris is the hitman, a cop who goes so deep undercover to crack organized crime, he becomes a cold-blooded killer. This film is about a man on the edge. I talked to people who had been deep covering syndicate and one said, when you go deep cover like that, you sometimes become worse than your enemy. Norris has been starring in films for nearly 20 years and admits making movies has gotten tougher. When I first started films, I had no experience at all. I had four months of acting classes and then I have a starring role in a movie. But I was too stupid to know that it's supposed to be that stressful and I just did the movie. But as you gain experience, it becomes, you know, you demand more of yourself and it becomes harder. Norris fans may be surprised to find there's a tender side to this film. He teaches a neighbor boy to defend himself after threats from bullies. Block, punch, good. Norris sees no threat to his career from the new crop of martial arts stars like Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal. It's like Steve McQueen and Paul Newman being competitive. You know, the market's so big, you know, you can't say no one can monopolize a market. You just try to get your share of it that you can and do the best that you can and the only person you compete against is yourself. However, there is competition that has become Norris' passion. That passion is powerboat racing. It's not a safe sport. I guess it's just the idea of something different and doing something that maybe a lot of people haven't done before. I stuck with it. I went up winning the national championship last year. Norris says it's speed that drew him to boat racing. He's also participated in off-road racing and he cites a ride in an F-14 and landing on an aircraft carrier as the biggest single thrill of his life. That would do it. Corbin Bernsen has been racing from one project to another. There's a role in a new film, a return to the season's LA law, and now he is using his star power to play out a lifelong dream. Shoot me now. Sorry. It was a reflex action. I just went on autopilot. Most LA law fans probably have no idea that Corbin Bernsen has a master's degree in playwriting and that his first love is theater. Corbin is using his success on the series and in movies such as his current one, Shattered, to bankroll a dream to bring high quality theater to smaller Midwestern cities. And let the people who may never get the chance to go to New York see what it's like to have something come to their town that's first rate. My first card, my first mistake. I'm a little rusty. I haven't been doing much typing lately. Don't throw that away. If he sees it, he'll raise the roof. Corbin is producing, directing, and starring in two one-act plays with soap opera star Kim Zimmer. The typists is about two people who work side by side for 40 years and grow to love each other but never act on their feelings. They've kind of become complacent and they've let this complacency become the definition of their life. I hope the plays inspire people to get up and act and do things and whether it be tell your wife you love her or tell your wife you hate her, but don't just do nothing about it. You know, life is too short and there's too many greater issues out there. Wearing three hats, producer, director, and star has warned Corbin to a frazzle. He had to go to the doctor to get shots of vitamin B12 to perk back up, but he says it was important for him to have control of every detail. People have said I'm foolish for putting my own money in and whatever and I have to do this. It's a dream. I've got to do it the way I want to do it and I can't have anybody who's given me a buck to do it tell me to do something differently. Well, Corbin will be taking his dream to Columbus, Ohio next weekend, followed by trips to Kalamazoo, Michigan, Cleveland, Ohio, and Louisville, Kentucky in the coming weeks and more dates will be added later on. Good for him. Our exclusive movie preview today draws fire with a new film about gangster Dutch Schultz when we return. The most advanced role then. The most advanced role now. During the Depression of the 1930s, Americans searched for a better life. Could a kid from New York's East Bronx beat the odds and become a somebody? That's the theme of Dustin Hoffman's new movie, Billy Bathgate. You in a gang? No, sir. No. How do you expect to learn anything? Dustin Hoffman plays the latest mobster to fill the big screen in Billy Bathgate. With Nicole Kidman as his girl and fellow gangster Bruce Willis by his side, Hoffman rules the underworld with an iron fist. How does it feel to be public enemy number one? I'm no public enemy. Public benefactor. Charmed by Hoffman's glamorous life, a boy played by Lauren Dean befriends the tight-knit group with hopes of someday becoming an equal. I love it. What'd I tell you? The kid's all right. He's my prodigy. I know I'm taking my words to my prodigy. Get in the car, will you? We ain't going all day. But Billy's quick study puts him at risk in a world where no one trusts anyone else. To make matters worse, he finds himself attracted to the one thing Hoffman treasures most, Kidman. You're Mr. Schulz's girl. No, I'm not his girl. He's my gangster. Besides, you're the one who's been looking after me. And since gangsters always come and go, when Hoffman's time is up, paranoia sets in, and even those who are closest to him are subject to his rage. Look at it this way, Paul. I'm the one sitting here, and you're the one sitting there. Now who would you rather be at this moment? Billy Bathgate opens Friday, coast to coast. Mary Steenburgen is happy even though she's singing the blues. She plays a full-time choir teacher, part-time blues singer in a new movie, The Butcher's Wife. You know, with your hair done up and some nice shoes. Been a while since you were in church. Mary Steenburgen may be a church choir teacher on the outside, but on the inside she wants to sing the blues. And with the help of a clairvoyant butcher's wife, played by Demi Moore, she sets out after her dream. Mary says it was fun to slip out of the more serious roles she's had lately into something much lighter. My first few films were more comedic roles, and I've missed doing comedy. I really, I love it. I mean, I'm somebody who likes to laugh, and making people laugh is an extension of that. Good evening. For my first selection, I would like to sing In the Dark. The actress also enjoyed the challenge of her first singing role. She worked with a voice coach every day for months, and she says she is proud of the results. In the dark, it's just you and I, not a song. I had never really sung in my life. I didn't even sing the shower, you know, and so I hear the part where I have to sing these blues songs. And it was just, it was kind of like climbing a mountain. I desperately wanted to do that, so it was great fun. In the dark No psychic had predicted that Mary would sing in her next movie, but she does believe that those kinds of powers do exist. Most of us have intuition that we either develop and encourage or sort of squelch in life. We either listen to it or don't listen to it as time goes on. But to be able to take something that's a secret desire and because of someone's encouragement to be able to let that blossom is a pretty great thing. The Butcher's Wife hits theaters this weekend. So you're casting a movie looking for a guy who's lovable, can cast a spell over an audience, but at the same time be tough as nails? Who are you going to call? Try James Kahn. Well, hi. Are you trying to get into my flat suit, honey? I'm just trying to debrief you. James Kahn is taking a walk on Hollywood's lighter side. He and Bette Midler play World War II entertainers in the upcoming movie For the Boys. And his next film is the comedy Honeymoon in Vegas. Comedy is great in that I think you really have to concentrate to be as real as possible, especially if the situations are bigger than life, you know. And action. In Honeymoon in Vegas, he plays a professional gambler who meets the lookalike of his dead wife. Sarah Jessica Parker portrays the woman. Nicholas Cage is her fiance. After making more than 30 movies, Kahn says he's still a hard worker, but now he's learned to find a balance. I think it's very important for, and I know too many young actors today who make it so important to themselves to live this crap, you know, 24 hours a day. And then when an inevitable step backward comes, you know, they can't handle it, and they're the ones that kind of wind up hurting themselves. Kahn says he's rediscovered the joys of family life with his new wife and baby. He's also happy about the new direction his career is taking. You know, thankfully you have a certain summons of success. Again, you know, the luxury of a success. The greatest luxury is to work with people that you like. So, for me, anyway. You can catch James Kahn and Bette Midler in For the Boys. That's beginning November 20th. Kevin Costner was criticized for everything from his accent to his acting in Robin Hood, but his fans loved the movie. It made more than $160 million at the box office, and now Robin Hood is about to add more money to his coffers. If you would be Freeman, then you must fight. Join us now. Join Robin Hood. Robin Hood Prince of Thieves makes its way from Sherwood Forest to video stores this week. Kevin Costner plays the swashbuckling hero in the film who joins forces with Morgan Freeman and Christian Slater to bring evil Sheriff Alan Rickman to justice.
