As a matter of fact, some of you may know it by another title. I think it may have been the title of the film when it was released in Australia theatrically years ago. The Boy from Barnardos. The Boy from Barnardos. That was the title of Lord Jeff when it came to Australia around about 1938-39. It's very good and I think you'll enjoy it very much. It has an excellent cast with Freddie Bartholomew and Mickey Rooney. Before I go, may I remind you that next Saturday night on the Golden Years of Hollywood, I have a beautiful romantic program for you. At 8.30 on the Golden Years, I'm presenting Three Coins in the Fountain. Remember that wonderful music? Frank Sinatra singing the title song. Three Coins in the Fountain next Saturday night at 8.30. And following that, something that's absolutely out of this world. The magnificent David O. Selznick film Portrait of Jenny from the novel by Robert Nathan with Jennifer Jones and Joseph Cotton. That's a program you wouldn't want to miss. And as I said, next Sunday at 12 noon, Lord Jeff with Mickey Rooney and Freddie Bartholomew. This program is brought to you by Ampol. Australia's own. And now we continue our Laurel and Hardy season with Swiss Miss. Released in Australia in 1938 by MGM. Now those who write about the stars of this film tend to put it down. And the reason they put it down is they don't seem to appreciate the fact that it's not just a comedy. It is a musical comedy. Therefore, it has musical sequences. Now if you like musicals, you'll enjoy Swiss Miss for some of its delightful songs. If you love Laurel and Hardy, then you'll be in a comedy lover's seventh heaven as you watch them going through some brilliant routines in Swiss Miss, particularly this one in which they have to deliver a piano to an inaccessible situation. It's very funny with a great tag to it. That's one of my favorite moments in all Laurel and Hardy films. Their scenes are great. Included in the cast and scene in the background of the shot is Walter Wolf King. Now, Walter Wolf King appeared in quite a few movies that had musical elements in them. And one of the most famous would be the Marx Brothers Night at the Opera, in which he had a prominent featured role. His leading lady in the film is a Viennese stage star named Della Lind. From what I can gather, she came to America to appear in Swiss Miss under contract. She was well known in Vienna and also appeared in leading roles in quite a lot of musicals, operettas and so forth, stage in Austria. Eric Blohr is also in the cast. Now there's one special thing I want to tell you about Laurel and Hardy. You know, there's a basic realism in their relationship. Yes, they're friends, but each one is a very selfish man. And sometimes he thinks of himself first, whether it be Ollie or Stan. And there's one classic moment to display Stan's selfishness in Swiss Miss. A scene where Ollie's in dire straits and Stan sees a St Bernard dog. Now it's not the scene you'll see early in the film. It's much later in the film. And he leaves Ollie in a terrible situation because he follows the St Bernard's so he can see if he can drink the brandy that's being carried in the cask that's tied around the throat of the St Bernard. The selfishness of each of these men is one of the real things about their friendship which makes their film so piquant. I think you'll really enjoy Swiss Miss. I do.
