Hello again from Ralph Neill in Melbourne for the National. Another 100,000 chickens infected with the rare form of influenza will be destroyed in Victoria. The Federal Government announced tonight that more farms in the quarantine area near Bendigo had been affected with foul plague. However, despite the new outbreak, the Government says there is no evidence of the disease spreading beyond the Bendigo area. The County Court jury hearing charges against BLF Secretary Norm Gallagher has retired for a second night without reaching a verdict. Mr Gallagher has pleaded not guilty to 43 charges of corruptly receiving secret bribes. Today the jury presented a list of questions to the judge presiding at the trial, Judge Waldron, and further questions will be dealt with tomorrow. The Victorian ski season officially opens this weekend with resorts promising everything, even skiable snow. As the guest reports, big snowfalls have been reported and most resorts will have at least some lifts operating. Victoria's Mount Buller Resort was deserted today, except for the maintenance crews busy grooming more than half a metre of pristine powder snow ready for the weekend onslaught. The last time there was this kind of snow so early in the season was 1977, and the last time the resort saw good snow all season was four years ago in 1981. Resort managers aren't pinning their hopes on this year's early start, but they say it's a good sign. It is certainly a very good start so far, but the prospects, it's the weather and in the mountains you never know of course, but we've all got our fingers crossed for a very good year.
