Hi there everybody. I'm here to tell you that the songwriter is not always the person who gets the glory for a hit record, but it's their contribution which is the most crucial. They have the task of sitting at the piano chasing the inspiration. Whether it's the lyric or the melody, there has to be some magic. And a singer needs to make that magic connect before they can make a song their own. The 1993 song of the year is going to be some of those things and more. The nominations are. Crookshank Perkins Rumor. For The Honeymoon Is Over, The Cruel Sea. Crookshank Perkins Rumor. For Black Stick, The Cruel Sea. Diesel. For Never Miss Your Water, Diesel. Neil Finn. Thanks a lot. It's been a funny old year. This is the song of it. And thanks a lot to James. He's not here at the moment. And see ya. Thanks Wendy and congratulations. What a great song. Top breeders recommend pal meaty bites to build a healthier dog five ways. It was from this very harbor on the Clyde Estuary in Glasgow in 1889 that Sir Thomas Lipton first set off to salon. He went in search of rare and precious teas for his motto was direct from the tea garden to the tea pot. His clippers, the fastest in the world, allowed him to transport the best leaves selected from hundreds of different teas without losing an ounce of their quality or freshness. Today the Sir Thomas Lipton tea is bear witness to his great adventure. Sir Thomas Lipton, teas of a unique character. Speed, like all amphetamines, is made from dangerous chemicals. Look at this, 50 pages and you reckon they could get my name in once. Don't you think that? Hi, welcome back. The eighth ARIA things and boy are we having fun. Ladies and gentlemen, quick take that, say nothing. Right now, and for God's sake don't push me backwards. Right now it's time for a young man who's, what a year, 93 has been for him. He's been touring with Madonna and East 17. He's already won one ARIA and he is a great Australian talent. Would you please give it up and make sure it's generous for ladies and gentlemen, Peter Andre. Take it to the top. Come on. Can I be the special one? All right. To the top. Here it is. Make this thing feel so good. To the top. To the top. To the top. To the top. To the top. Peter Andre, congratulations. Well done mate. Peter Andre, ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together for him and his posse of dudes. I play no instrument myself and yet I am a master of air guitar. I say that with quiet understatement. I feel for me anyway with your guitar, there are four basic positions. Stupid, who would play like that? Let's see, I guess your classic rock status quo. Big favourite, still is, big heart of Bon Jovi if they're watching. I also particularly like the David Bowie early one, Ziggy Stardust, you know, well Ziggy played guitar, one leg back, one slightly bent. That's a nice one. And of course now we have a new one, the McDonald, which is the lean forward and the hey, but your hair's got to go in your eyes. Now you might judge by that that yes, our next presenter is a guy who can do them all and do them in just one take. Joining him is a woman who's had a sensational last album with Bitch Epic. I'm tipping the next one will be just as good and it's probably going to be called Michael. Michael, would you please welcome Deborah Conway and Tommy Emmanuel, ladies and gentlemen. I know all those positions. Yeah, yeah, I bet you do. Well, Tommy, we're here tonight. Watch it. We're here tonight to present the Jazz Award. You know, I was almost a jazzer, Tommy. You were. Except unfortunately I didn't, wasn't born with enough rhythm. But then that was almost a qualification. Really? Yes, that's right. Such a simpatico with jazz. She's got great dynamics, this woman. This month, an album by a new jazz band known as DIG went straight into the national charts at number seven. That's just one example. That's just one example of how alive and healthy the jazz scene in Australia really is. And it's a credit to DIG. Tommy? On your dig. Australian jazz musicians like Dale Barlow, Bernie McGann and of course Paul Grabowski, just to name a couple, have international reputations in their field. With that in mind, let's look at the nominations for the best, hello, the best jazz album of 1993. Atmosphere for flying. Judy Bailey for sundown. Mike Bukowski for wanderlust. Catholics for Catholics. Knock for touch. And the best jazz album is won by... Wonderlust. Picking up the award is Wonderlust member Tony Gorman. I'm pleased to accept this on behalf of Mike Bukowski, who's on tour at the moment. The album wouldn't have happened without Jim McLeod, ABC Jazz Tracks, Tim Dunn of Rupus Records, Neil Sandbach, Ace Engineer. And I'd like to thank all the band for playing beautifully. Thank you very much. Congratulations and thanks, Dan, and thanks, Tony. Next up we have the first of two new categories that have been introduced into the ARIAs this year. Here to do the honours for best alternative artist is a man who is a successful stand-up comic. He had his own record out last year and he also has a high-rating TV show. I may have to have him killed. Would you please welcome the ARIA nominator, Jim On, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Sure look, they've used to be Dazzler on the podium. A very good job. Right, I'm reading out the nominee for the best Australian alternative release. That means you get great reviews, you don't ever get paid any money for it. So they've got a bit of a pre-prepared package, so can you please play that? No. No. Clouds for Thunder. The Cruel Scene for The Honeymoon Is Over. The Night of the Wolverine. Dave Brainy and the Coral Snakes for Night of the Wolverine. And you and I for Sound as Ever. And the winner is, you and I, Sound as Ever. This feels really stupid, I still don't know what alternative means, but thanks very much to Kate Stewart, to Mark Tunley, who played on the record. Thanks. I'd like to thank Todd and welcome on Russell. Cheers. Congratulations, you are mine. Thanks, Jim. We'll be back with more from the 8th annual ARIA Awards with special appearances by KD Lang, Peter Gabriel, Al McFeast and a very special performance from John Farnham when we return to the ARIAs. The Night of the Wolverine. The Night of the Wolverine. The Night of the Wolverine. The Night of the Wolverine. The Night of the Wolverine. The Night of the Wolverine. The Night of the Wolverine. The Night of the Wolverine. The Night of the Wolverine. Cool. The Night of the Wolverine. The Night of the Wolverine. The Night of the Wolverine. The Night of the Wolverine. The Night of the Wolverine. The Night of the Wolverine. The Night of the Wolverine. The Night of the Wolverine. Take it away. Please make a speech. Actually, I had a few people I wanted to thank here on the back of my doll check. Which I didn't have to say. We just simply want to thank our manager Wendy. We want to thank Polly, especially Dicko, Red Eye. We want to thank TC, Tony Cohen, Matt Crosby, our crew, Damian and Kel. And Kelvin Flanders. I want to thank everybody who has supported us and come to see our gigs. Thanks a lot. Cheers. Seriously, thanks a lot. Congratulations to the crew. Thanks, McConnell. Next up we have the second of our new categories. It's for Best Pop Dance Release. Dance music now dominates the charts and Australian artists are making some of the best of it there is. To present this inaugural award, we have two presenters who have the key and the secret to making dance music. Direct from London, from the Urban Cookie Collective, please welcome Rowan Heath and Diane Charlemagne. Hello Australia. It's really fantastic to be here in your beautiful country. We love it. Pop music is by its nature a creature of fashion. It's also quite sophisticated, you could have fooled me. In terms of production and performance, to do it well it means that you have to master rhythm, melody and match that with the best sound or so this says. Well, all five nominees have done that, so let's take a look at the contenders for the Best Pop Dance of 1993. Peter Andre for Peter Andre. Bellydance, One Blood. Girlfriend, It's Up To You. Erin, I Want You. Sound Unlimited, One More From The City. And the winner is, I'm sure you've all guessed it's Peter Andre. Where are you, where are you? Alright, well I'm told I have to accept it on his behalf. Thanks very much. See ya, thanks a lot. Nice try Pete, don't worry about it. And congratulations by the way. Our next performer is a great look running in. Am I late? I am, I'll leave. Our best performer is perhaps best known for crying in the chapel. He lives in New York now, but we're fortunate to have him here tonight to perform the Madison Collector's classic Throw Your Arms Around Me. Ladies and gentlemen, with some friends from the Conservation of Music Conservatory, I'm even better, please welcome Peter Blakely, ladies and gentlemen. I will come to you at night time. I will raise you from your sleep. I'll kiss you in four places. As I go running along your street. I'll squeeze life out of you. You will make me laugh and make me cry. We'll try to forget it. You will make me call your name and I'll shout it to the blue summer sky. And we may never meet again. So shed your skin, let's get started. And you will throw your arms around me. I dreamt you at night time. I watched you in your sleep. Met you in higher places. I touched your hand and touched your feet. But if you disappear out of this world, I will never ever say goodbye. And we'll try to forget it. You will make me call your name and I'll shout it to the blue summer sky. And we may never meet again. So shed your skin, let's get started. And you will throw your arms around me. Yeah, you will throw your arms around me. Oh, oh, oh. Oh, oh. And we may never meet again. So shed your skin, let's get started. And you will throw your arms around me. Yeah, you will throw your arms around me. We may never meet again. So shed your skin. Thank you. Thank you. So we've hung for about a semester and she's amazing. She slurps coke, speaks a gazillion languages, is intellectual. That's why we get along. Because I love her lips. Congratulations, Stan. The presenters for the award for Best New Talent are known to most of us as actors, although she has already had a number one hit. He was the hottest actor of last year with his role in The Heartbreak Kid and is now the star of Heartbreak High. Please welcome Tony Perrin and Alex Dimitriadis. Hi Alex. Hello Tony. Always nice to see you. How is everyone tonight? Very well. We're here tonight to present the award for the Best New Talent of 1993 and some of the past winners of this have gone on to greater heights like Crowded House. Diesel. Yes. Archie Roach. Things of Stone and Wood. And what about yourself, Alex? What about a music career? I'll sign you up. I think I'll just take one step at a time for now, but why don't we take a look at the nominations for Best New Talent of 1993. The Bad Lucks. Get on board. Robertson Brothers. I Know Why. Swoop. Thriller. Margot Smith. Sleeping with the Lion. Vincent Stone. Assumption. And the winner is The Bad Lucks. Congratulations to The Bad Lucks. Formed almost four years ago, they shared a mutual love for the Memphis sound and it was these influences that gave The Bad Lucks an edge as a young band playing the pub. Their first single, Lost, was an instant smash. The band toured extensively and then released their debut album, Get on Board. It was the most critically acclaimed album of the year. Follow-up singles, I Remember, Green Limousine and Memphis have ensured The Bad Lucks consistent chart performance. The Bad Lucks are currently on tour in Europe with Jimmy Barnes. Congratulations to The Bad Lucks. We'll reach over one more to go. We did have a thank you speech from them on tour. Tragically though, they're on tour with Jimmy Barnes and the result was unintelligible. Sad but true. It's time now for the best adult contemporary record of 1993. Our presenter is a man who summed up the 60s with his song, American Pie, and I guess in doing so left a lot of questions unanswered like, why did they drive in a Chevy to the levee and what is a levee anyway? And why would you ask old men who are drinking whiskey and rye anything and expect a straight answer, much less confusing stuff about planes? Anyway, sorry. Please welcome, ladies and gentlemen, Don McLean. I started singing why, why Mr. American Pie, drove my Chevy to the levee, drove the levee to the sky. Aha. Thank you very much. I'm doing the adult contemporary. And all I can tell you about that is when I was a kid, my father told me you'd be too contemporary. I'm going to kick your butt. And he was an adult. But they're really not like that anymore. This year, the nominees are from the fields of country, jazz, folk and pop. And some of the records were really big hits and others deserve to be. So let's take a look at the nominations for the best adult contemporary record for 1993. James Blunder, Touch of Water. Tommy Emmanuel, The Journey. Grace Knight, Gracious. Rick Price and Margaret Ehrlich, Where is the Love. The Seekers, 25 Year Reunion Celebration. Okay, the winner is Tommy Emmanuel, The Journey. Oh, I didn't expect this. I thought the Seekers would get it, you know. But there you go. Now I'm very nervous because I didn't have a speech ready because I didn't expect to win it. This is fantastic. First of all, I want to thank all the people who voted for me. Thank you so much. I want to thank my wife who puts up with my ridiculous schedule and my daughter who's out there watching, hi, and all my family, my band and my crew and some of the most important people, the record company, Sony. Thank you very much. Congratulations, Tommy, and thanks, Ron. Well, we're going away, but still to come, Peter Gabriel, you and I, KD Lang, Marsha Hines, and a special performance from some of country music's finest stars. When we return with the Arias. From the creators of Cheers. Hello there, Frasier. Oh, what fresh hell is this? Comes a new hit comedy, Frasier. I can't read my paper Eddie's staring at me. Just ignore him. I'm trying to. The reality with taking speed is you never know who made it or what's in it. Just breathe deeper. Hear me? Speed catches up with you. Australia, it's a weird country. Like Ginger, the garage cat who thumbs rides with tracks. If you think that's weird, get a load of this week's Aussie Post. There's the bizarre sport of putting terriers down tunnels. The store that stocks Dr. Williams pink pills for pale people. The town where it rains fish. The crock with skin cancer. The women who run their own quarry. And a last salute for the ordinary seaman who died for his mates. You know even Ginger reads your jokes. We're a weird mob, alright. And it's all in the True Blue Aussie Post on sale now. This is the bigger Dolmio jar with a wider mouth so we can put more of the good things in. And your spoon fits perfectly. We even have labels so you can reuse the jars so you'll wear the Dolmio grin. Welcome back. This is the eighth annual ARIA Awards and you're watching it on Channel 9 and listening to it on Triple M throughout Australia. Country music celebrates our history and our future. And with that in mind we've put together a band that spans more than four, come them four decades of country music. I feel my heart start to jumble when I hear your voice. The sweetest kind of music just leaves me no choice. Tell the world about it, this man is mine. Play him to school and I can breathe his eyes. Take you to heaven, just give it a chance. And we might be winners in the game, or in the game of love. We might be winners in the game of love. We might be winners in the game of love. We might be winners in the game of love. We're happy winners We're happy winners in a game of love Happy winners in a game of love I'm a ringer from the top end Where you gotta know your job And what you do with each day On two million acres you know you've gotta earn your pay If you wanna take it on There's one thing that should be forgotten Nobody else can do the job like a ringer from the top end I roll out the swag, beat a bow and three And then I'm out like a light Dreaming about those girls in town Next thing is broad daylight No time to dream of what might have been I'm in a dirty bookcase, sure, where's the muster of tea? I'd better keep my mind on my job Cause I'm a ringer from the top end Nobody does the job better than a ringer from the top end Thank you very much. Thank you very much. It's great to be here and have this segment of country music and now my pleasure to introduce somebody who has so many millions of fans all around the world. He's a legend in country music and I'd say one of the greatest songwriters of our time. So let's begin with a big Australian welcome to a great friend of mine and he's a great friend of Australia. Your friend and mine, Mr Willie Nelson. Here he is right now. Thank you very much, Slim. We're glad to be with you folks here and thank you for inviting us over. We'd like to do a song for you. On the road again I just can't wait to get on the road again The life I love is making music with my friends And I can't wait to get on the road again On the road again Going places that I've never been Seeing things that I may never see again And I can't wait to get on the road again On the road again Like a band of gypsies we go down the highway We're the best of friends It's a state that the world keeps turning our way Our way is on the road again I just can't wait to get on the road again The life I love is making music with my friends And I can't wait to get on the road again On the road again Like a band of gypsies we go down the highway We're the best of friends It's a state that the world keeps turning our way Our way is on the road again I just can't wait to get on the road again The life I love is making music with my friends And I can't wait to get on the road again I can't wait to get on the road again I can't wait to get on the road again The Life I Love Sensational stuff. Put your hands together for them once again. Leon and Slymon Willie. They get to stand on the same stage as them, don't they? The next category honours the best folk and or aboriginal and or multicultural album of the year. Peter Gabriel has done so much for the cause of indigenous music around the world. He established WOMAD, which is an organisation that promotes and records indigenous artists. And with that in mind, we asked him to make this special presentation. Ladies and gentlemen, Peter Gabriel. Thank you very much. About 12 years ago, I started listening with a lot of other musicians to music from all over the world. And the indigenous music was a very rich source of inspiration and ideas for all of us. In this country, particularly, you have one of the oldest and richest indigenous traditions. And I'm very pleased to be here to be presenting the Australian Indigenous Record of the Year Award. I think what's happened with the music and the way some of the best artists today are integrating their own traditions with modern music is very exciting. Artists such as Yotoyindee and Archie Roche are great examples of all this. So let's take a look at some of this year's nominations for the best Australian Indigenous Record. Archie Roche, Jammu Dreaming. Tittus, Sing About Life. Yotoyindee, Freedom. And the winner is Tittus, Sing About Life. I want to cry. Oh, just quietly. I think I'm going to wet myself. I did. Jill's out now managing as an angel and she's done everything for us. And Tony Cohen, you're the most gorgeous little lippy person I've ever seen. I want to thank Amy Saunders and Lou Bennett for standing alongside me and singing. That's a huge honour. Amy, do your thing. Thank you. Fancy letting me up here with this category to say what I'm about to say. Is there a difference between the indigenous category and the adult contemporary? Who knows? Or is it just maybe that more Aboriginal performers are in the indigenous? Sorry, David Brightey, you're not drowning waving. You're good musicians, but you're not black. Thank you. Lou Bennett, we did it! Thank you! Still to come at the ARIAs, John Farnham, Richard Marks, UMI, Grace Nice, Tommy Emmanuel, plus KD Lang, Russell Crowe, Magda Zabansky and more. You and I ladies and gentlemen, jazz together for the once again. I could have seen a stage go over. I'm going to have to do one myself. Ladies and gentlemen, our next presenter needs no introduction, but obviously when you say that there will be one. Otherwise there will be like silence and startlement. In fact, last year he was inducted into the Hall of Fame and he's back to do the honours for someone else for 93. Would you please welcome, ladies and gentlemen, the one, the only, Ian Molly Meldrum. Thank you Richard. Well I'm going to be very brief tonight because the group we're honouring tonight certainly helped change the view of the Australian music scene on an overseas level. I saw them in the early days at the crick of his arms and I simply had no idea then how far they would go. Well I'll tell you what, this is how far it goes because we're talking about men at work. Just have a look at this. Colin Hay, Greg Hamm, Jerry Spiser, Ron Strikers and John Rees certainly were men at work when they stormed across the charts of five continents in the early 80s. Colin Hay started the band at Melbourne's La Trobe University in the late 70s. However, they went largely unrecognised playing the crick of his arms in Richmond. In May 1981, after signing to Columbia, they released Who Can It Be Now? It was an instant hit, reaching number two on the national charts. Then came Down Under, the comic anthem about Australians with its jokes about Vegemite sandwiches. That song spent ten weeks at number one. In less than a year, men at work went from the crick of his arms to the biggest band in Australia. But no one expected what was to happen next. Men at work. It was hardly surprising that men at work were on it. They've taken America by storm with their Smash It album, Business and... In April 1982, the Business As Usual album was released in America. MTV loved the video clips, and the American public sent the album to number one, where it stayed for 15 weeks. It was an unprecedented success for an Australian band. The album sold more than ten million copies worldwide. Men at work then embarked on a world tour to answer, among other things, a million journalist questions about Vegemite. Oh, that's rippy. In 1983, they released a second album, Cargo. This shot straight into the US charts, where Business As Usual was still in the top ten. Cargo sold a million copies in its first week of release. Late in 1983, Down Under became the de facto theme song for the America's Cup Challenge. When Australia too went across the line at Newport, the song rang out around the world and went back to number one. Men at Work typified a new Australia that was ready to take on the world. Many bands make hit records. Men at Work made a national anthem. But success had its price. The band began to crack under the pressure, and members drifted away. By the time the last album was recorded, only Colin, Greg and Ron were on deck. The moment had passed. Few bands will ever penetrate the national consciousness as Men at Work did, and few musicians ever get to fly the national flag as they did in the early 80s. They did business, but it definitely wasn't as usual. Please welcome to the Hall of Fame, Men at Work. Thank you very much. We might have been accused ten years ago of being a little bit blasé about receiving awards, but trust us, this is very important to us. We'd like to thank the ARIA people for making this possible. We'd also like to thank in particular Dennis Hanlon, who I believe may have jumped up and down a bit to make it possible, and Peter Carpen, who had the courage of his convictions to sign us all those years ago. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. It's a great acknowledgement, and very well received. I think it's also an acknowledgement of amazing things that can happen when you get the right combination of people to get it. The chemistry can be huge. Thank you very much. I'm very, very honoured to get this after all these years. I just think it's incredible that it takes this to actually get us on a stage together. I'd like to thank my darling Rebecca for reminding me I had a bit of nasal hair before I came on stage. And all those people that came to see us and all those places, there were many, many sublime moments. And what a ride we had. Thank you very much. Thank you all our fans.
