Top runners and it'll be very hard for the others now to pass from there because remember they're all equal powered cars Anne-Marie Sparklin well back on the grid. That's a bit surprising Donna Gardner That surprises me back on row seven because she really was going very hard But Wayne told me that she scared herself in the first couple of days and said I've really got to slow down I'm scaring myself. Well the first day here. Yes She was having a bit of trouble So she slowed it down a bit and she's you know getting her apexes and got the car on the track where she needs to be So she's coming on is that strange at Dame Edna Everidge is bringing up the rear Okay All set for a start Red lights just a few seconds to go Revs are filling up away. They gave a shell gets a very very good start five laps race distance 19 kilometers and here's the drag down to the start line I'm not sure who's gonna get the first corner Kirsty might come across years right here. Hang on. We're just a muscle. Oh, she's having a go. She thinks he's in the snow She thinks he's gonna be in the snow. She keeps jumping curbs like that Bradley Did you teach him how to jump curbs like this or was his crumpton that was crumpton? I was telling him stand the black stuff. He has he's really keen to do well here today she's been trying so hard and listening and asking so many questions and Michelle and Kirsty been the peak and they're gonna put on a great race I think well the field now streams through you can see all the different lines and angles and of course They've been taught this racing line But let me tell you Kirsty Marshall is one of the most competitive people you'll ever meet in your life She really whatever she does she attacks and she said to me on the grid the other day I'm pretty nervous about this if I relax will I be better? Have a look at it a day wonderful start from Kirsty Marshall Well, actually not only curse me I think there's a lot of them out there which are wanting to do extremely well because as I said before that they're taking it Very very seriously and asking a lot of questions and and Joe Bailey for one is one person I think he was hell-bent on sort of doing very well here. They yeah, they're all very keen I'm glad they were very worried about the concertina effect in the first corner. There's Juliet going out She's having a bit of a go there and you know, it's good for them No, it's always a problem to get through that first corner. Here's a replay of the stunt Have a look at the job. He's got a fire going in the front of a car really smoked a bubble Of course, that's really just held the back hasn't she just sat in a spot spinning wheels You can never get anywhere doing that and you know with they had a little few little races at AIR the other day Oh look at Kirsty hang on to it. She's working like that pretty hard So you have a look at the mirror really quickly too. She got it back straight and a big look to see what was behind her Ha ha ha terrific stuff into the straight here now. Now. This is a difficult corner and I bet you that's Donna Gardner Yes, it is Donna Gardner with a bit of push and shove trying to bust the way through the pack because this is the hardest part all equal cars So you really have to be neat and tidy. Well the added AIR They're all saying, you know, there's something wrong with my car I can't pass them down the straights. Well, they're all the same You know the deal is you out break them into the corner so they've been you know, okay working hard on that But you don't tell everyone that because otherwise they'll all be trying to out break each other into the same corner And we've seen what happens when you do that in the group a race. It's a great promotion Look at Donna Gardner under brakes. Thanks very much. Just picks up one spot Oh, Lisa Hensley won't like that much. She's a fairly competitive She's driven to the racetrack a couple of times with Wayne I think Oh Donna with a great move there pulled herself up under brakes beautifully Now you can see what I mean about equals speed down the straight see all of the cars Donna really had Got the move under brakes, but she can't make a lot of ground down the straight Here she comes over the curb again. Well Brad she's gone. Okay, she's going very well You know, she's keeping her eye on the job and she's getting all the apexes and not hitting too many curves Well, she's up to 13th already. So she's doing extremely well after one lap It's Marshall Phil Key has the Bailey Lewis. So Hayley Lewis up into the top runners now That's how they stand Kirsty Marshall with a wife is going there's a little spin of Ryan It's hope it holds off for the rest of the day like she's cleared out and left them. They Kirstie Michelle are very smooth, you know, they've got their lines right We were out at AIR practicing Kirsty went past about three or four of the girls and going a bit of a scare I said Kirsty great move, but you know, they're There's you know, so intent on doing well Gotta say to you that when we're doing our snow shows down the snow this year when Kirsty Marshall announced She was going to be part of this I said you win this because I just seen her so many times I mean to go down a mountain the way she does I'm doing a slalom down the straight now Yeah, she's trying to shake Michelle up all Michelle's done a pretty good job hanging on to her though it's not over yet Michelle's been you know, the quickest the last couple of days and You know, she's hanging on the Kirsty. So I really think yesterday there were just nothing between them and And he needs to make a little mistake and I think Michelle would be right there But you know, Kirsty's really see the thing is though that somebody who's as competitive as Kirsty Marshall is used to having pressure you know, they know what the adrenaline is all about when they sort of stand up there ready to come down on a run or whatever and she That's one of the reasons I think why she's doing so well Michelle Filkey the Australian netball captain trailing and she's made up a little bit of ground there on Kirsty But Kirsty has a pretty well covered she keeps looking up into the mirror. She's aware that she's there now She comes up under brakes Michelle. That's a good job there Look at the attitude of the car But they're doing a great job because they they're using all the right and a bit of the green stuff too Which is not unusual for these types of cars because group B type cars use the the verges very very often But dick that's where you pay the price don't you get a little bit sideways under the grass there Then you've got to try and make that up a game Well, you're not going to do it in straight line speed. So I've got it through the corners of bikes did right You know, you've got to be very very smooth with these cars You know some of these some of the other drivers who aren't used to sort of competition you see Bradley did you tell them that you drew a dotted line down the middle of the road then he used half the road or what's the Story, we actually told him to follow all the black stuff. So You know that doesn't matter how many times you tell them like It's so aggressive and they want to go and then so they start ducking and diving and getting defensive But they're um, there's a land George. She's been going quite well this weekend. Obviously through this is going to you through the chicane You're taught a few of them that the quickest way between two points is a straight line Donogardner attacks that corner again trying to pick up another place. She's been spectacular under brakes and now the tight corners Donogardner Well, that's Rachel McQuillan. She's chasing down Rachel doesn't take too many prisoners either She doesn't mind passing on the outside inside. Oh, we've got one off there a bit strange line that one was that Cathy Freeman? so she's Straight is great sprinter having a little sprint up on the inside of the curb there Cathy Freeman Wonderful prospect in the world athletics is and I mean just to see the people they're all out of their environment We've only had a few days to work with them. It'll be an experience. They'll never forget I'm sure they've all said that and they look we had a bit of a dinner last night They also they're having a great time and you know, it's great to meet people, you know They're going through lists and saying this is my hero. So it's great. I wish first he'd drive straight now The curse is obviously coming down the mountain again because she's got the slalom I tell you what they're going fairly deep under brakes. Yeah, and they're running nose They're tailgating one another. She's trying to cover a line She's fairly you know, that's that's the problem I think they have most of them is the fact that they really should concentrate on what's in front of them rather than what's behind them Yeah, that's right. I'd like to have James behind me mate. I can tell you I'd be taking a second look Ha ha ha ha. I tell you what they're putting that. It's a good dice sister I mean they haven't been much further there. There's the gap back now So the field not too far back not as strung out as we thought it may have got there It's Clive look at the concentration. I have to noon drive. Look at this Look out the window down again. We'll do a right turn here. Very nice Quite comfortably in 17 place at the moment is our Clive this shuffles himself into the seat again They look on the face in the intense concentration four laps gone now as Clive James Where's Dame ender? We haven't seen much of dying because prompting are sitting beside her Neil prompting who is Had all of that work to do it'll be interesting to have a look at the look on his face If you get there we go. There we go I've been maybe prompting is using half an easy Is it like prompting might be using the pedals and Dame Ed is using the steering wheel? This will be an experience he won't forget Oh Well Kirsty now will be fired up Kirsty was saying yesterday She feels comfortable being behind and in front I don't know that this is running perfectly to plan because it's only a lap to go But it'll bank for an interesting last lap I would the thought she wanted to do it on the last lap now Kirsty mask with a race in her hands down She's got to try and get past Michelle filthy. You got to remember equal speed down the straight So she's got to do it through the corners or under brakes These two are having a very good battle. I tell you it's interesting that you're very well Here's the move Michelle coming round the outside. Mr. G there. That's what's happened So that's where Michelle passed Kirsty Marshall Kirsty will be kicking yourself about that But you know, it's all to do with being smooth and in control and you know, you rush for a gear change You miss it. There you go. You lose the lead. Okay breaking joke Oh, yeah, she'll up the inside. Will she do it fellas? Can she do it from there? I think so. I Reckon I'll try and go side by side around the corner at the end of the straight She's gonna pull Michelle's going back. She could should have moved out there He gets a lot of cost up a Michelle Comes back well Kirsty's trailing away there She outbribe her and then got sideways If Kirsty needed to move over when Michelle did and she might have got away with that one, but you know as I said They're not taking too many prisoners here. It's very difficult to get a lot of experience in a week, isn't it? Sure in three days. You'll have a go here though to Kirsty Marshall have a go Michelle will know that she's only got to keep it Cover the Australian netball captain now leading on to the last corner If I go Kirsty Marshall trying everything she can puts the nose up behind her Here's the drag to the line Michelle should be able to hang on That's one of the best celebrity races dices we've had in all of the years the event now look at Dave Dave did have almost left. I'm Edna. This could be drama I don't know what problems gonna say to Dave Edna here because it's it's either put your indicator on and move over Yeah, they can't you look you can see crumped and looking for them up behind. I'm Edna. We thought that was the last time This is the final lap now. So Kirsty Marshall still got some time to get past Michelle It's time to get him out of the way. Something's looking around Yeah, I can see me his dog He had a comic for breakfast so he could band her properly with Dame Edna. So he'd be hanging on about now I think Well, what a good guy stick it is an excellent dice as a matter of fact And they're doing an extremely good job of it because like it's not easy to drive that post to another car They're in around a racetrack like this using all the certain. This is right there Considering they've only been driving for three or four days. It's just amazing So Kirsty Marshall a champion scare sitting right in behind the Australian netball captain Michelle Filky here they come around this corner She goes From there Michelle in the slipstream Michelle's very calm, you know the whole way she's she handles it Well, she's smooth and she's calm and it's interesting that they it by so competitive I tell you what, it's very it's very difficult to be calm in a situation like this Yeah, nose to tail and you know, they were you're not gonna pass anyone in a straight line. That's right Gotta be at the end of the straight only chance Kirsty's got to get back up to the other side of the track under brakes if she makes her lunch, you know Here we go. Here we go Gets up Well done Michelle Filky what about that? She's sugar straight off. She'll ever in the car park shortly Kirsty Marshall with a big bird There goes Joe Barley just thrown away third place. Oh, that was magic stuff Did you see him weaving and trying to break the slipstream? It's not over yet. She might stop on the back another car here Yeah, Crompton the shell Phil keys gonna take this the Kirstie Marshall has a go what a fantastic race the best we've had for a long long time many a year So Michelle felt give you Australian netball captain. She comes over first Kirsty Marshall second A little bit of push and shove on the straight. That's a strange looking rear vision mirror I've seen for a long time. So third place is who? The plastic place was Juliet Juliet has the Juliet has them was third. What a great dice that was congratulations Brad because obviously you've taught him a lot in the few days He's done a gardener coming through now. I could say the rest of the field I'm James. Where's live? Oh Don't be hanging on about anything. He's got the hand out the window. What's going on here? Her cars a bit hard to pick that's about the only left-hand drive Calibra around here I think you imagine prompting can't you what a great job you're doing. Well, there she is our winner Michelle filthy What a great drive gee that was a terrific battle, but she did your right friend. She kept the cool She didn't let it get to her and I quit Christy was throwing everything out about the kitchen sink at the end there And it just you know Michelle was nice and cool and calm looking down the list Donna guard to finish 10th Clive James 17 I think it's very started. So he just had a nice Sunday drop well when you consider that you know Michelle and Kirsty they're two people that are used to this sort of pressure because They get it every every time they go and compete they feel the same Look at the crowd to they're really responding to the two girls. That's been a fabulous drive I mean we've had a lot of celebrities go around here, but nobody's because that there's Joe Bailey But very very aggressive toward the end Joe Bailey did a great job And of course Julian has them coming in third and we really didn't see that much of Julie because we're looking at the front dice No, but she and Joe were having a great dice there and so is Harley. They're all together and you know, they've Mirror now be quite honest, you know For the number of people you've had in the event and I think that yourself and and cropped and have done a great job Because there's certainly not too much carnage which we've seen on thanks. Thank you. I tell you what Jackie was also impressed Missed I mean it one time I came up the straight in fifth gear which wasn't too good consider We never hit fifth gear here So it was I didn't realize how nervous I would be and I kind of I was happy to be in second position So I could chase and to get out in front at first. I was I found I was playing defensive Which is the wrong thing to do. I played too many spots to know that are you really angry that you finished second? Oh god. No, I'm just happy I finished alive Great race though. Good entertainment. Thank you. I think the crowd do you love I saw it we swap first and second Maybe five times so for the crowd. I really do hope they enjoyed it. You did good. Thank you Well done Kirsty and did you see Clive James going by there in the background being always going being escorted? He looked a nervous wreck with its noise drama and danger formula one has been often described as a Crawl pray and somebody's left. It looks like Mark Blundell has been left on the line It's it's it's Martin Brunnell Martin Brunnell has been left on the line having worked so hard during practice Now he's actually got away And if he got away before the last driver on the line passed him and it doesn't look to me as though he did He would have been able to take up his place, but no he has not succeeded So poor Martin Brunnell having worked his heart out for two days to become the top Passively suspended car driver in the Ligier Renault on the grid in eighth place has now got to start 24th behind the Japanese driver Toshio Suzuki and Eric Comas in Larousse Lamborghini's it's very frustrating indeed two days of hard work planning Scheming adjusting the car getting the umpteenth little tenth of a second out of it Just to have it not start properly on the grid and they have to start at the rear of the grid of all circuits To do it on this is probably one of the worst Let me remind you that when they come up to the grid Ayrton Senna will be leading the field the other 23 drivers up as slowly as he can they haven't gone berserk Dodging and diving and weaving down the Sir Jack Brabham straight. What a wonderful wonderful picture That is they are warming up their tires by putting the maximum sideways load on them So that the trades are good and hot and they can maximize their grip at the start they'll need plenty of grip because this circuit has been very slippery during the Two one-hour qualifying sessions on Friday and Saturday in the background That was Jean-Marc Gounon in the white car number 23. It's only his second Grand Prix drive He's gone a lot better in practice for Adelaide than he did in Japan But Senna will slowly lead the other 23 up to the start so that they spend the minimum time On the grid waiting for the lights to change from red to green to start the 81 lap Australian Grand Prix there is Jean Alessi number 27 behind him Riccardo Patrese That is a Guri Suzuki with the yellow band. It is Carl Vendlinger. That is JJ Leto behind him is Rubens Barricello There is Mark Blundell. This is Andrea de Cesaris. There is Martini Derek Warwick Okiyo Katayama Eddie Irvine Johnny Herbert. They're streaming through our fans Toshio Suzuki Jean-Marc Gounon Pedro Lamy the Portuguese driver. That is Suzuki. I'm sorry and poor Martin Brundle. He must be fuming inside the cockpit Although as Alan told you he will have tried like all the rest of them to psych himself virtually to a standstill So that he's all cool for the start and the green will follow the red four to seven seconds later The Waiting this is a long hold. This is a very long hold somebody's waving his hands in the background And it looks to me as though somebody's engine has stalled and they are holding the grid You can see Martin Brundle as yes. Well the visors go up. Well, this this is an unfortunate start But it's not nearly as unfortunate as somebody sitting stationary in his car With someone accelerating up behind him and not realizing because he's unsighted and going into yes It's it's a real anti climax and now the drivers have really got to bring themselves back down again and start all over again The five-minute board has been shown but Murray as you quite rightly said there's not much room at this circuit you really can't afford to have somebody crashing up the backside of somebody because You've only got to be about four or five rows further back and you can still be up to a speed of a hundred and thirty 125 mile an hour and that can be a very nasty accident So in many respects they've done the right thing and let's go around again and get them all fired up Oh, they've done the right thing. No doubt. Ah, and this is a mega mega bonus for Martin Brundle Because the rules now allow his liger to be moved up from 24th on the grid to 8th and he's going to be able to take up his correct starting position on Qualifying and it was Derek Warwick who we think stole the engine. It was Derek Warwick who had the problem anyway So behind every cloud there is a silver lining and it's shining for Silver line is conjoined. It's shining for Martin Brundle and I am unashamedly Delighted for the South Wotton, which is where he comes from driver That's near Kingslin in England because Martin is a lovely chap He I remember in his Formula 3 last year racing against Ayrton Senna It was very very close for the British Formula 3 championship that year 1983 and Martin Brundle actually beat Senna seven times in comparable equipment So he is has a very considerable talent Which he has not subsequently been able to exploit in notably the Zagspeed and Brabham teams with Yamaha engines and the race now of course as a result of Mark, Derek Warwick having stalled he's going to be over a reduced length of 80 laps instead of 81 laps of this 2.3, 4 7 miles 3.7 7 8 kilometer circuit One or two people getting in a bit of a mess somebody tripping over the electric start of trouble Trolley that's we're looking with a Damon Hills car now Damon's fairly well placed. He's on the inside He's although he's three or two cars back from Senna if he does a really good start He may be able to follow Senna through on the inside of cross So he's not that badly placed at all and does put him on the right side of the circuit going into the first chicane He has in the past done slightly better starts than frost So I think old Damon could be a bit of a dark horse here. Actually he say his performance in practice was very impressive He was quite quick this morning on pool tanks. So he could very well be the man to watch out for Yes Damon was was saying to me earlier on that he's just going to watch points when the start happens Alain Prost has similarly said that if he doesn't get into the first corner first he's going to relax for a while so far as you can relax in a Grand Prix and Wait till the fuel load goes down and then attack Ayrton Senna But of course if he does that he will have to be very careful that he hasn't long since said goodbye to the Brazilian Because Senna is a notable Super starter I expect him to be through the s's first and then he will concentrate on building up if he does get away quickly A cushion between himself and whoever is following him, but it's not just Alain Prost and Damon Hill It's Michael Schumacher who was second fastest I think I owe Derek Warwick an apology to be honest I was concentrating on the front of the grid and I've accused him of having stalled and stopped his car It was indeed Okio Katayama the Japanese driver and he's now having to start from the back Katayama has been doing as is his won't and I don't mean this unkindly a great deal of spinning here in Adelaide He's got a lot of determination, but I think he's also got a lot to learn Yes, well over exuberance and an experience and talent, of course You shouldn't get them confused and this is a very difficult circuit, but we've had some very lucky drivers here I mean, we've had a few good spins and it's a circuit that normally doesn't really allow you to spin all that often without Damaging the car, but we've had quite a few spins and surprising little damage you're looking at Katayama now who's been demoted for His dereliction if you like and is now starting 24th on the grid and a mightily relieved Martin Brundle back to his rightful position of 8th Look at that. You can see the Hite shimmering off the tarmac and away they go Yes, a few thousand multi thousand of horsepower taking off down there Murray Yeah, this of course is not the start just in case you've got and a Katayama getting away This is the parade lap again and I say again the Australian Grand Prix is going to be over 80 Laps instead of 81 as a result of that aborted start It will be no less demanding because the less experienced drivers Will have tended to become a bit unsettled by having wound themselves up for the parade lap and then the start Only for it all to fizzle out of the things to metaphorically go flat Now they've got to psych themselves up again Ayrton Senna leads down the straight ahead of Alain Prost Damon Hill Michael Schumacher in the yellow and green four-wheel steering Benetton gives me a chance incidentally to say that Benetton made the dramatic announcement yesterday that in 1994 they will be using a brand new Ford V8 engine not the Renault engine that a lot of people thought they were trying to get and that's got some Extremely advanced technology and they say the test results have been extremely encouraging Martin Brundle dodging and diving there Celebrating his move back to eighth position on the grid Eddie Irvine that's a helmet you won't miss look how high Eddie Irvine's head is in the Jordan and actually that is a big problem. He's got a long body and short legs as a result of which his helmet actually sticks up into the airbox And can reduce the amount of air that gets through to the engine and therefore reduces its power Also, uh buffets the driver around quite a lot too because the cockpits are designed to deflect the air either side of the helmet onto the rear wing Giving it its maximum amount of efficiency and if the helmet does stick up into the airflow It does create an enormous around buffeting for the driver. So there is Irvine You can see that the top of his helmet is Blanking off the bottom of the air intake for the engine, which is the highest part of the coving There is de Cesaris Martini very correct That is Irvine Murray there isn't he's got a orange and green helmet He says he's orange because he's north island north northern island and screen to stop the IRA from shooting him. Well Well here is uh Irvine And he is starting from 19th position on the 24 car grid. Let's hope they all get away this time I remember in austria once there were four full starts That's the man with the green and he's the man that decides that they are ready to go to signal They are not ready to go for some reason I think I think Alan While while we're all winding ourselves up and then feeling terribly deflated It's an indication of how high the tension is on the starting grid. Well, absolutely and quite coincidentally It's our man eddie Irvine the guy that we were just talking about that is the culprit. Yeah He's missed his spot on the starting grid Irvine should be you see you see the white line behind his wheels Irvine should be starting in 19th position and he stopped too far forward Now I must be quite honest with you and say that this is this is a precedent as far as i'm concerned I'm, not sure what the rules say Whether whether they can Oh You know when you choose valvoline oil You're buying the best possible protection for the best possible price I mean you might want to run the world's top motorsport teams with it Nor to protect millions of dollars worth of equipment with it And you may never want to run major transport fleets with it Some people do that's why they choose valvoline oils people who know use valvoline For safety's sake falcon side intrusion bars are 30 percent stronger than required by law Isn't that right officer? Imagine the future for an airline That already flies more passengers than any other airline from southeast asia Malaysia the largest fleet of aircraft flying to five continents Imagine flying malaysia airlines The briefs When it comes to engine technology falcon with its alloy head overhead cam and electronic fuel injection system is far more advanced than comodore Light years ahead in fact The races and ken is obviously having a turn of four about something with roland brunser rider You can tell from the expression on his face that ken is not exactly best pleased about something I don't know what it is, but you should be I can hear ken knows the rule book backwards forwards sideways And every other direction and he of course is the entrant for okio katayama And I suspect that ken is forming up and explaining in his usual gentle manner That okio katayama should not be at the back of the grid He should be where he's supposed to start and where he is supposed to start is in 18th position And roland brunser rider who's been through more crises than most of us one way and another remember the crisis he had here In 1991 when we kept on seeing him form up in his weather proofs to show us another five minute delay board For because of the wet australian grand prix sadly shakes his head at Ken. Terrell is now going up to see the stewards He's climbing the magic stairs up to the stewards box and he will be having an interview with them I would say that he's asking why bring Um martin brundle up after a false start and not bring my man up I would say you know, I would say that's what he's bluing about. Why are you doing it for one and not for mine? That is enormously perceptive of you alan i've just been told that that is the exact reason that is what is happening Ken terrell is saying one rule for one person should mean the same rule for everybody else And you're not applying it to my man So if martin brundle has to start from the back why? What's gone wrong And i've got to say he's right Say it again. I would say he's right too. Yes. Well, perhaps you better go see the stewards as well. I see him enough Well the now now we're we're with uh, we're with michael schumacher the german in the benetton who is fourth on the grid and in front of him Was uh alan prost there is prost sidenling going away Going away first for the third Parade lap and for the what will now be the 79 lap australian grand prix And of course, uh, it just means that there are even more opportunities for things to go wrong on this parade lap eddie Irvine starting from the back now, I see What's important now is that uh senna doesn't rush around of course, he's too experienced. He won't do that He'll uh slow down towards three-quarter way through this lap and make sure that they all bunch up because these cars are air-cooled They don't have radiators or fans in them and it's very important that he doesn't rush around the start line and be sitting there Unnecessarily longer than what he should be because his car will overheat now you can see he slowed right down And he's giving all the guys behind him a chance to bunch right up. So when he does get to the front of the grid He won't be there for a very great length of time So first of all martin brundle is demoted to the back of the grid only to be returned to his place at the expense of yukio katayama After which ken tirrell complains to roland brunscher eider and then the stewards meantime eddie Irvine has lined up in the wrong position ahead of his 19th position grid start slot as a result of which He is now starting That is the story so far now view on as down the sir jack prabham straight for the third time on a parade lap Go the dodging and diving weaving cars and if their tires aren't worn by now This is the third time they've done sun haul this they never will be Irvine are rather chasin 24th on the grid and he is following Toshio Suzuki the japanese newcomer in his larouche lamborghini and we're looking back from pole position Holder at and centers mclaren ford apparently one of the reasons i've just been given is that Martin brundle simply stalled or was unable to get away in the original warm-up lap And that's why he was able to come back into his normal position whereas the other two deliberately Misplaced themselves and therefore as a cause of that was sent to the back of the grid. I see all right Well martin brundle is starting eighth. That's all he cares about and ahead of him johna lacy's ferrari 7 garhard bergus ferrari 6 micka hacken and mclaren 5th michael schumacher's benetton 4th damon hills Williams an excellent third for his first race in adelaide in front of him front row of the grid on the left number two Four times world champion alan prost and airton center pole position are we going to go this time? It is action in australia And he looks to me said they all get away across has actually got a good start but not good enough Because senna leads across the second hildes third schumacher is fourth berger is left and just Over our curb cab. That's what happened last year. We had spinners here last year That's pedro allami and there's the coarse cast car coming through pedro allami has spun to a standstill Presumably as a result of impact through the s's on the first lap airton center has done exactly what he wanted to do He's got a jump start a meteoric start and he leads alan prost at pedro allami is the first retirement from the australian Grand prix is not going to complete a lap damon hill is still third michael schumacher is still fourth Here's a replay Well a good start by damon hill and not a bad start by prost but damon just couldn't get in look He's having a little bit of a look on the inside of frost decides to back off a little bit let his team leader go Through very wise now all the build here over the gold That's rubens barricello who went over the grass at the left as a result of which people moved to the right as a result Of which pedro allami was offline jumped the curb ended up in the gravel and out of the australian grand prix Which is now I remind you over a 79 lap race and allami spins in front of the two la russes of eric comas And toshio suzuki the race is coming through to complete the first lap center now prost Oh, that's in a very dangerous position and they've got to move that car The yellow flags are waving of course, but are you going to see them under pressure allam? Well, you will there's two of them being waved and if you're a professional formula one racing driver You don't see them. You should go to an optometrist But at the end of the day, that's a very dangerous position because if you you shouldn't be passing anyway going into that situation But if you went in a little bit too deep and went over the curb you're going to t bone that lotus. It's very nasty position Well martin brundle who must have thought his australian grand prix had ended for the first start is actually up from eighth to sixth center leads prost is second hill is third chumaka is fourth burger is fifth brundle is ahead of Hakkinen and a lacy up into sixth place Mika hakkinen in the second mclaren is in seventh position a lacy is eight suzuki That is a guri suzuki is ninth carl vendlinger is 10 Leto is 11th riccardo petrezzi is in 12th position Notwithstanding the fact that he was fourth fastest in the warm-up this morning And you watch damon hill who I must say has mastered this adelaide circuit remarkably quickly He certainly has I mean for the lack of experience he's had around here. He is going extremely well But what about center 1.3 second lead at the end of the second lap? I mean that fantastic start But yes, just just make a note of this if you can that the lap record here is actually held by michael chumaka one minute 16.078 And airton center's first lap was one minute 20 seconds And you can see he's doing exactly what I thought he would try to do build a cushion between himself And crossed because they're going to start lapping people All and airton center got air rated in the japanese grand prix you will remember because he was being held up by eddie Irvine and damon hill and the gap between himself and alan cross the man you are watching at the moment came down from 30 seconds to 13 seconds as a result of center being held up and he won't want that to happen here In the meantime damon hill's coming under attack from chumaka There they are in the background second is alan prost and the young german is closing up on damon hill I remind you that the benetton has got four-wheel steering that may prove to be a benefit here in adelaide Because although it doesn't actually make the cars go around the corners any faster Chumaka was telling me that it makes the car much easier to drive much more relaxed and and uh free-flowing So in this race, which is going to be an hour and 45 minutes that will help him Look at the difference of the reno out of that hairpin there from the 40 gained about two or three car lengths coming into the chicane but now uh Oops chumaka brings it up back under braking. This will be the difference you see in the chassis now They're coming to the brake uh bumpy braking area chumaka's up onto him under brakes And now they're into the tight twisty section, but you can see how that reno does jump away under acceleration Up to the market's turn and then the right-hander at stag turn which leads into jones straight down to the So-called brewery bend they're past the markets now into the right-hander at stag Well chumaka's lost time in distance There's one of the big damon screens there which are showing television pictures and the drivers will be able to see themselves coming down the straight If they've got the inclination but airton center is now coming up towards three seconds ahead of alan frost Who is 1.6 seconds ahead of damon hill? You can see the gap as michael chumaka goes around in fourth position Gerhard bergus ferrari is fifth and mika hakenan has passed martin brunwell The finished driver mika hakenan is up to sixth place and jaun alacey is eight behind brunwell Oh, i'm just going to point out you have a look at chumaka's uh thumb. We've seen oh Being very aggressive He's being very wildly with that will but you'll see his thumb as he goes down through the chicane before he comes up to That next right-hander you'll see his left thumb come over and press the button. That is a pre-programmed second gear You'll see it shortly if we go back into the cockpit and have a look Here's his thumb. He would have already done it by now, but there's a little green button just to the left of his thumb They pre-program that it's a second gear the computer says that when it gets to a certain amount of revs All he has to do is press that button when the car de-accelerates down to those revs Automatically goes into second gear for him. So it's a great labor-saving device for the driver So now this is the stack turn and ahead of michael chumaka through his camera. You can see damon hill who is now some 1.82 seconds ahead of the benetton board and those bars show the revs the blue bar About 12 000 rpm flat out the green bar is the accelerator position You can see it's flat the moving number of course of the gears And michael chumaka changes those gears by flicking the levers of the semi-automatic gearbox or they're even programmed into it to change Automatically and in kilometers an hour the bottom numbers there are and you can see 250 150 k's around the corner and they're coming through to complete the lap now senna was 2.8 seconds ahead of alan prost and he's still 2.8 seconds ahead and Prost I say again said that if he didn't get into the first corner first He wasn't going to go raving mad at the beginning of the race. He was just going to play it cool There's going to be tire changes in this race for sure Or there is a new good year compound a d compound specially produced for australia That's the softest compound they've had this year because the grip here is not necessarily of the best All the drivers are using it and we're expecting tire stops round about lap 30 Which as ever could change the complexion of the race Chumaka's posted the fastest lap of the race so far an 18 466 but prosta's not far behind him But an 18 559 so they're really pouring it on yes and senna is an 18 605 so it's very very close But you can see it's a battle between these four because shumacher is pulling away from gehrhard berger there He is in fifth place burger has got the red and white mcclaren of mika hacken and who finished third in japan Getting closer to him and incidentally hacken and is laughing faster You're watching him now than gehrhard berger only a tenth of a second faster admittedly But one tenth of a second over 10 laps is one second And that's good. Well, he can't afford to let the ferrari get away He wants to stay as close as he can because when the fuel load comes down on the ferrari it will improve It's obviously carrying a lot more fuel than the mcclaren And as a consequence that'll be affecting his lap times But if mika lets him get too far away when the fuel load comes down on the ferrari It will improve a lot quicker than what the mcclaren will so senna's the fastest so far Uh, one eighteen three two one and that is 2.3 seconds slower than michael shumacher's lap record last year in the venetian board And we're with mika hacken and now in sixth position With gehrhard berger's ferrari in front so the a and out of the race goes john mark gunnall in the no, it's uh, I apologize. It's martini pierluigi martini who is very much cruising in the minardi ford and It's the last race for this team in that state because they are merging with the scuderia italia team next year And it'll be a new team still carrying the minardi name and probably powered by ford but not necessarily So hill is third shumacher is fourth. That is the german. We are now on lap seven out of 79 I remind you No, we're on lap eight out of 79. So it's one tenth distance already Senna is leading by nearly three seconds Now here is hacken He is in sixth position how close to him Is jaune alacey mika hacken is sandwiched between the two ferraris now of gehrhard berger fifth jaune alacey in seventh position but the Nobody knows a mcclaren better than mika hacken and including airton senna Well, that's right. I mean he's been a test driver for them He knows the ins and outs of this car probably as you say quite rightly better than senna At the end of the day at the end of the day that senna's experience He knows exactly how much to wring out of this car When is the right time to go when is the right time to slow down to conserve tires? I would say senna is not in cruise mode. He's just putting in some very fierce laps He's building up at lead and it need be a little bit later on he can put that to good use And if senna won it's a long long way to go yet, of course But it would be his fifth brawl pre victory of 1993 and that was something we certainly did not expect to see at the beginning Of the season when a lot of people including I must sadly admit myself Did not expect the mcclaren 4 to go nearly as well as it has but The wizards from working have just chipped away at the reno williams advantage over the year They've improved the aerodynamics ford have improved the engine posworth, of course And the package has been getting better and better and a lot of it is down to this man number seven Mika hackenon who has done thousands and thousands of test miles not in competition Longing for the opportunity to get into the fray which he did in portugal and you're watching at and senna race leader And retirements already are pedro lami in the lotus and tierluigi martini In the minardi 22 left out of the 24 starters and we're on lap nine almost at the end of it Quite interesting. Allain price has just posted the fastest lap of the race So, uh, he might have decided that he's ready to have a go Yeah, if you were in this position or if you were in allah's position, it's a good Uh question to ask you as an ex williams driver of great distinction allan when would you decide that? It was time to stop watching senna pull away and try to reel him in Well, I think as long as he sticks within a respectable distance behind another he can't afford to let him get too far away That's what which you don't do but if he sticks where he is now looks after brakes and tires I would have a really major go about Uh, eight or nine laps before I was due to come in to uh put the office A fresh set of tires on that's when i'd have a go because then if you did abuse them You know that you've got you're coming in seven or eight laps later to put a new set on anyway Well, that would be round about lap 20 and we are now on lap 10 out of 79 Ayrton senna has just posted the first under one minute 18 seconds lap one minute 17.95 He's increased his lead over allan prost to 3.1 seconds doesn't look like it on the monitor But that's what it is in time damon hill is three seconds behind prost shumacher is one second behind hill Berger is 11 seconds behind shumacher Hakunin is one and a half seconds in sixth position behind gohan berger Alessi is seventh frumble is eight Suzuki is ninth Ben dlinger is in tenth position ahead of jj leto ricarda petrazi mark blundell and Englishman johnny herbert who is 14th ahead of derrick warwick 15th And this is the battle for third position We're looking back from damon hill's williams reno at the flying benetton ford Of the mercurial michael shumacher Shumacher's really trying to you saw the back of his car slide out Then he was on the power a little bit earlier than damon was and he's really having a major go second in 1992 michael shumacher a fine drive Gerhard berger of course was the winner last year you will recall That uh airton center and nigel mansell had a terrific scrap for 17 laps until they took each other out at fosters hairpin on the 18th lap and it was uh There was a big argument about whose fault it was but as far as ricarda petrazi was concerned He wasn't overbonnet because he went into the lead with gerhard berger as close to him as man as senna had been to mansell but uh Then out went ricarda petrazi with a with a broken fuel pump and gerhard berger won from michael shumacher Just looking at that picture before shumacher seems to have a lot of oil over the front of his car and over the front Of his helmet now that might indicate that damon hill's losing a little bit too much fluid um Does it looks all right? But there is seems to be a lot of fluid over the front of shumacher's car now I just hope that that's not going to be the downfall of damon hill But he is he is see it's quite an untidy helmet. Of course That's why they do wear the rip-offs because when they become too, uh Dirty, they can just literally rip them off and they've got a clean visor to look through But he is actually he seems to be gaining on damon quite comfortably and from michael shumacher's camera You saw johnny herbert touring into the pits uh presumably to retire from his last brawl free of 1993 and I don't think yes there he is coming into the pits and I don't think lotus are going to be sorry to see 1993 over They're extremely advanced but very complicated Active suspension system has given an enormous amount of trouble this season and next year like everybody else They're going to have to revert to the simpler less complicated passive suspension system And that'll mean a lot less things to go wrong So with senna leading on lap 12 prosti second damon hill is in third position Martin brunwell is in eighth position his teammate mark blundell is 13th derek warwick is in 14th position and uh then in uh 22nd position was johnny herbert But he is out of the race at the moment as they come through here's a replay and uh, Somebody oh that's uh off goes eddie irvine And that's the end of his second grand prix. I think maybe he's going to be able to back out He's got a lot of muck on the towers, but he chose a good place to go off if he had to go off Because he's pretty nearly near the pits And yes, he just went in too quick the car understeered it lost front end traction and he just drove straight in well He races back in the pit. So hopefully for his sake they can throw another oh, no, we've got signaling that's all over That's a shame That means that something is damaged in the car irreparably perhaps One of the suspension elements and eddie irvine Joins pier luigi martini out of the race And we're on lap 13 now senna is consolidating his lead this uh Brazilian Really is something else. He's now 4.7 seconds ahead of alan prost And it must be starting to become a bit discouraging for the four times world champion from france alan prost because Senna is just pulling away. He was one he was a nearly a second faster on the on that lap Alan alan prost is settling down to a steady second position and that's katayama disappearing out of the picture and uh acts at stag turn well katayama has been announced as Resigning for tirral with the yamaha japanese engine in 1994 And I think probably a mixed blessing as far as ken is concerned because Because katayama must have cost the tirral team a lot of money in broken parts this year Yes, but thinking of his nationality he might have also been responsible for having the yamaha there as well Yes, I think that could well be the case and so now on lap 14 Ayrton senna leads alan prost by over five seconds I've said before that Ayrton senna is probably the most complete driver package of all time He's not only a superb driver. That's the battle for third position hill and shumacher, but Ayrton senna is a consummate politician he's Fantastically good on the money side of the business. Nobody does a better deal than him absolutely nobody With the possible exception of niger mantel is no longer in formula one and senna whatever aspect of formula one You're looking at takes a great deal of beating Eddie Irvine is out with suspension problems and that's not entirely surprising because I guess to hit the wall that quickly is a fairly good Ask to be able to reverse it out and continue on with your grand prix these cars are actually designed with the perfect opportunity to tell you now As you look at the front right hand suspension of what was damon hill's car now It's the front left hand suspension of shumacher's car these are designed not only to go up and down and just suspend the monocoque But they're also in a funny way designed to fly off without damaging anything if you do have a major accident So if you do hit the wall as hard as Irvine has done, it's not entirely surprising that you can bend them So Pedro Lami is out in the Lotus Pier Luigi Martini is out in the Minardi or Kiyo Katayama is out in the Tyrrell very bent Tyrrell Johnny Herbert has been into the pits and come out again and the race is what you're looking at now It's the race for third position between zero damon hill and number five And number five the number that mansell used to carry until this year And that of course is Michael Schumacher Mika Hakkinen is in fifth position Gerhard Berger is six Jona Lacey his Ferrari teammate is seventh ahead of Martin Ruddl eighth Ninth is Aguri Suzuki tenth is Carl Bändlinger eleventh is JJ Leto So the two Sauvres are together again as they have been so often this season Riccardo Petrezzi a rather forlorn 12th position in the Benettoni and into the pits comes Michael Schumacher Now this was earlier than I expected this is the end of the 15th lap This is interesting that is Kenny Hancommer on the front of the car he's lifted the wheels off the ground There he is he gets out of the way and that is a good good good 4.81 seconds that is a ripper stop Yeah, so that means to say that Michael Schumacher has decided I reckon what he said to himself was I can't get past damon hill on the track what I'm going to do is to come in early take on fresh Rubber get better grip and hope that damon hill when he comes into the pits takes a longer time To stop and I will be able to pass him in the pits as it were well I think you're probably Spot on and also there's a distinct possibility that they will be making two stops so he can now On fresh rubber really get in and have a go damon's rubber will be going off so this is going to be a very interesting situation Excuse me I'd like to talk to someone about insurance If you've had enough insurance company Swahili come and talk to us at JM We'll give you straight talk up front Prix the cars out of the race Lammy went out in the first lap in an incident Martini went out with mechanical failure Ervin and Katiyama both had small accidents all drivers okay as we go back to our commentating team Murray Walker and Alan Jones No way I would think that that's interesting Schumacher has now obviously posted the fastest lap of the race on that fresh rubber not entirely surprising no I mean Lacey of the last race of the year they're going into the off season and you want to go in there having being able to say to the boss well look I knocked off my teammate in the last race so maybe give me a bit more testing or take a bit notice of what I want for the car for next year so it's fairly important well Schumacher on fresh rubber has closed the gap between himself and third place McDamon Hill by two seconds it's down from 13 to 11 we're on lap 20 Senna is now only 2.8 seconds ahead of Frost Frost has gone a second quicker on this previous lap now I can't tell you why because I like you have been concentrating on this battle between Berger and Lacey but believe you me we Alan Jones and I are going to keep a very close eye on that gap between race leader Ayrton Senna and second place Alan Frost because I remember Frost saying to me I'm going to wait till the fuel load starts to go down a bit in charge and I remember you Alan saying round about lap 20 is when I would make my push there's Senna and he's lapsed Ditchezurus well I mean he's the ultimate tactician Frost we know that I mean not only can drive a car very very quickly around any given circuit in the world but he's a great thinking driver and so of course is Senna so you've got the two best tacticians here before having a go but you can see a visible distance now that he's caught up to yes I think actually a lot of it may be due to the traffic because you can see that Senna has already lapped Toshio Suzuki in the LaRus who is in 19th position now and Frost has done the same thing and has got Andrea Ditchezurus in front of him good luck Alan as he comes out of the right hander at the end of the lap up to Andrea Ditchezurus, Frost will be pushing hard to get past here yeah well he couldn't have caught him at a worse place of course because now he's going to lose time through the chicane must get past him before the right hander coming up here which he will indeed under brakes because that would have cost him a heap of time Andrea Ditchezurus using all his experience politely and sensibly moves over and let's cross through that of course is what Ayrton Senna was moaning about with Irvine in Japan he was saying Irvine is inexperienced I was a lap behind him I was leading the race and he was more involved in fighting with Damon Hill for sixth position than letting me the race leader through well that's true I mean the different schools have thought on that of course I mean that markers are entitled to have their race as much as the leaders are but I think there is you do have to realize that when the guys are coming up to lap you particularly if they are if there is a race for the league going on you've got to be a bit sensible to move over and let them get on with it but it's interesting to know that Alain lost about three quarters of a second then and Jean Alessi has moved past Gerhard Berger and that is Michael Schumacher out of the Australian Grand Prix after that superb charge of his as he went out in Japan so he's gone out on at the end of the Jones straight and that means to say that Mika Hakkinen moves up into fourth position and poor Michael Schumacher's efforts in the last two races of the year have brought him a couple of zeros in terms of achievement well just before that he was left in some nearly two seconds a lap we can see some I think that's a brake problem or it looks like they haven't put a wheel on properly when he came in for those new tires because it looks to be leaning over a little bit more than what it should and it almost looks like there's something binding up or been rubbing on the disc and that's what's causing that smoke yes I think Schumacher will now go away and have the knee operation that he's been wanting for some time now because he has a knee problem inside the cockpit of the car which prevents him from training as much as he would like to it just means that compared with anybody else he's just uh super fit instead of unbelievably fit but Ayrton Senna still leads on lap 21 by four seconds now because they're clear of the traffic and it was indeed that that was delaying the Brazilian and you're watching push push push Jean Alessi in the Ferrari and we've got news from the pit lane Barry Sheen yeah Murray I've just spoken to the Benetton guys and apparently the engine blew up I would be pretty much sure that within the next couple of laps that Senna's going to come in because there's a lot of action going on I can see Ron Dennis was talking and gesticulating so I wouldn't be at all surprised if Senna comes in and the word is that as soon as Senna comes in Cross is going to follow him back to you Murray thank you Mary Sheen Britain's double motorcycle world champion now living in Australia helping us in the pit lane and that news figures because if Ayrton Senna comes in Alain Prost would be unwise to stay out any longer yes well I mean it all depends on the lap times but there is a cat and mouse situation going on here at the moment McLaren's normally can do a slightly quicker pit stop than the Williams camp can do but they would be monitoring one another and for sure if Senna comes in Frank will drag in Prost immediately also I would imagine and then it will be down to who is quickest in the pit lane does Prost get away cleanly we've seen him have problems get away from the pits after a tire stop in previous races this year and on lap 22 out of 79 with the pit stops starting the tire stop starting Senna is three and a half seconds ahead of Prost who is now six and a half seconds ahead of Phil who is 18 seconds ahead of Senna and there's Gunon doing what he did in Japan this driver really is too inexperienced in Formula One to be fair to him he hasn't had any testing time because of the time in the season he's coming and the fact that Minardi have got no money but it really does question whether he's right to be here and into the pits comes Hill here is Hill he's stopping for tires before Alain Prost now I remind you that under five seconds is the target I mean if I could change four tires and wheels in 6.41 seconds I would think I was a genius but you can see that Hackenen has now closed right up that is Mika Hackenen in the red and white McLaren he's in fourth place behind Damon Hill and into the pit lane that's all happening because here is Gerhard Berger and Ferrari are usually very good well that's not very good by their standards I was saying if I could change tires in about six seconds I would think I was a genius but you really do have to do better than that in Formula One well that's exactly right it's all relevant by Formula One standards now 4.5 seconds is a really good stop and anything under five is acceptable anything over five is slow so Berger rejoins in eighth position with JJ Leto behind him in the salvo Carl Wendlinger behind him and Riccardo Patrese in 10th position behind Wendlinger and that is Ayrton Senna and he's coming up to let the LaRouche which moves over and lets him through and you can see that Prost now is closing it's it's the traffic is helping Prost on this occasion that's not usually the case but Prost is now under three seconds behind Ayrton Senna on lap 24 out of 79 well Prost now really should pour it on he must realize that it's going to be any old lap in fact my guess is that Senna will be in on the next lap but I think Prost now has to realize that and he has to get as close to Senna as he possibly can to make sure he doesn't lose anything in this pit stop and that pack won't be lost on Alain Prost he's passed Eric Comas one of the who drives in Spectacles and Mika Hakinen has got past Damon Hill Mika Hakinen has moved up in the third position so the McLaren Fords are first and third just as they were in Japan sandwiching Alain Prost just as they did in Japan and that is Hakinen followed by Damon Hill so Mika Hakinen who's shown so much promise and who was bursting to get into Grand Prix racing while he was held as test driver for McLaren he's showing his style again as Riccardo Petresi leaves the pits he came in 12th and he's now heading and Senna is in this is race leader Ayrton Senna now and they've done it again the McLaren team have done it again that's a lovely stop 5.3 seconds now Alain Prost is going to be coming in I'm sure on the next lap well Senna looks as though he's in a strong position at the present moment because he's come in he's taken on those tyres we are now on lap 25 which is uh I think we'll see Damon Hill now have a go back at Hakinen because Hakinen got oh it's not entirely surprising that Hakinen got past him his tyres were really up to race temperature Damon went out on relatively cold tyres even though they had been in warmers Hakinen took advantage of that but Hakinen is still to make a pit stop and now Damon's tyres are coming up to good operating temperature I think will be fantastic in a second Damon is indeed a chip off the old block Father Graham he is a racer and look at him going for it fourth position behind Mika Hakinen McLaren versus Williams Ford versus Renault Finn versus Englishman and it is that close lap 25 and behind these two Jean-Alaise is fifth Aguri Suzuki is sixth, Verguese 7th and Hill tries again and race track air pit that's where Senna passed Mansell last year ran wide and Mansell immediately retook him the danger there Murray is that all you need is for Hakinen to come across your boughs and he's right where your tyre clipped your front left hand one and you possibly dove out so Damon really oh he locks his oh he locks his brakes it's a good chance for Damon what do you say to yourself Alan when you see that tyre smoke from the car he's on the inside he should with a little bit luck be able to get him through here yeah oh lovely clean and incisive David Hill goes back to third position demotes Mika Hakinen and Alan Prost leads the Australian Prey by nine seconds from Mika from Ayrton Senna who has changed tyres well that was that pass that you saw going into the chicane was a result of what happened at the corner beforehand Hakinen went in a little bit too deep locked up his brakes retarded his speed a little bit too much made a very untidy exit and Damon was able to take full advantage of that get a better run out and put himself in the position to go on the inside and the chicane well I hope for his sake that Alan Prost is not oh there's somebody going off it's Derek Warwick up onto the curb at Brewery Bend a lot of people have done that in the past he's under the underbody skids over the curb and and Eric Derek recovers now that takes a lot of doing now I'm saying I hope that Alan Prost for his sake hasn't left things too late he's nine seconds ahead of Senna but a complete pit stop including coming in getting out and speeding up again takes about 13 to 15 seconds which could be the Senna's effectively in the lead in fact he's cutting into Prost's gap I think Prost is leaving it too late because he's now 7.7 seconds ahead of Senna in comes Mika Hakinen fourth position he's obviously decided like Schumacher did earlier on but he can't pass the man in the front on the track so he's going to try and do it in the pit lane what Prost has done he's realized that Senna has has come in Prost has stayed out for another couple of laps because a couple of laps is probably what it would take for Senna's tyres to get up to proper working temperature Alain's taken advantage of that I predict he'll be in the next lap or if not the one after for sure I think he needs to lap 27 Prost leans Senna by 7.8 seconds Hill is third 17 seconds behind Senna Hakinen is 14 seconds behind Hill having changed tyres Hakinen Alisi is fifth Suzuki in the footwork is in the points at sixth ahead of Gerhard Berger's Ferrari seventh Carl Bändlinger's Sauber eighth Martin Brungel is ninth in the Ligier Derrick Warwick was tenth but after that spin will have lost places I think NATO will have gone up into tenth position we're now on lap 28 and now this is indeed interesting Alan because Alain Prost who has not changed tyres and Senna who has are are lapping within a tenth of a second the same time as each other well the Williams camp will be monitoring this very very closely indeed the minute that Senna consistently runs 0.3 0.4 of a second quicker than Prost they'll let him know and then he'll be straight in for tyres if he can be doing the same sort of speed as Senna now he'll probably stay out there but for mine the minute the times become equal I'd be in like a flash why shouldn't he come in now well we don't know the answer to that question Prost is staying out Senna is seven and a half seconds behind him Damon Hill is 20 seconds behind in third position and there's a battle in this race that neither of us have mentioned yet it is the battle for second place in the world championship which at the present moment is held by Damon Hill just two points ahead of Senna and Damon Hill's personal target here in Australia is to finish ahead of Senna and thereby clinch second place in the world championship in his first year with a real team Alan Prost is now coming up behind Riccardo Petrezzi who is 11th in the Benetton that's where he went off in practice Petrezzi Alan Prost race leader looking to lap Petrezzi who is lapping a lot slower than him but not that much slower in terms of holding things up and Prost will now be worrying about the fact that Senna who's probably got a clear track will be able to close on him well maybe now this is the time he should come in because if he has dropped a second or so on one particular lap because of a back marker then he should say all right I'll go into the pits now and whack some new tyres on you see he's not making he's not making uh too much of a mark on Petrezzi so really I think he should really come in now yeah there's center in the background you see that that doesn't look like seven seconds to me now is Petrezzi going to let Prost in no he's not they shall not pass meantime Senna is in second position grasping his opportunity he has got a clear track in front of him the next man ahead is Prost who still hasn't got past Riccardo Petrezzi and the veteran Italian could be helping Ayrton Senna and it's lap 29 Prost must surely come in this time Prost leads Senna Prost is in here he is now he was leading by seven seconds and Senna of course will go through into the lead again absolutely no doubt about that in fact it has happened and the Williams well Prost has lost a lot of time he's lost two seconds because I can't remember Senna's time exactly but it was of the order of five seconds and again whatever the team discipline and drill is in terms of tire changing McLaren have again shown that they are superior to Williams and Alan Prost has lost another two seconds he just went a little bit wide then you can see the tires a little bit cold he's gone into that corner much the same speed as what he's been used to for the last 30 odd laps and just run a little bit wide into it but you really cannot afford to give two seconds away in the pit stop I mean two seconds in Formula One is likely that 30 out of 79 Senna leads Prost second Hill third and Lacey is in fourth position in the Ferrari and if that stays reliable they'll both be in the points because Gerhard Berger is sixth and the Suzuki is in fifth position and into the pits comes Mika Hakunen and the high-rolling lift the front takes the front wheels off the ground this looks like a two leisurely task this isn't just tires this isn't just tires look at the way the seconds are ticking away and there's something on the left rear I'd say it's a drive problem he's obviously heard a noise or it's handling a bit strange they're looking at that back left hand whether it be a disc or a pad or a drive shaft but it's uh it's not boating well for Mika who was in 11th position and I think we're going to be seeing the fin sadly emerging from the cockpit he's obviously having a discussion and saying I want to go on and they're saying well you can't I don't know what the dialogue is any more than you do but the fact that he's been there as long as he has indicates to me that what his race is over effectively anyway because short of mass retirements in front of him Mika isn't going to be going any anywhere in Australia in terms of race results the worried eyes of the fin look out from his helmet his teammate race leader Ayrton Senna is now on his 31st lap as the work continues on the rear of Mika's mclaren ford here is Senna he's now 14.7 seconds ahead of Prost so it was indeed a false dawn for Alan Prost when Senna came in took on tires Prost took the lead here's something altogether different in a credit card no annual fees low interest and up to 55 days interest-free credit all on one card the co-op visa card now what would you like to do with your existing cards the co-op visa an altogether different credit card credit card it comes from the soul created by people with an obsession to build a luxury car like no other we have put ourselves into this car the extraordinary new unis 500 v6 the result of an obsession with perfection so so and hello i'm jackie stewart welcome back to the live coverage of channel 9's australian grand prix here in adelaide michael schumacher as some of you have seen is out of the race now hacken is out of the race he's had a mechanical problem let us now go back to our commentary team that's murray walker and alan jones who are incidentally giving coverage to the rest of the world frost now this is paddock turn or was the left hander into posto's hairpin and we're on lap 34 and as prost crosses the line the gap is one minute 13.2 but center is in traffic and prost is lapping nearly two seconds faster at the moment which means to say that he's closing the gap you can see that damon hill is only about three seconds behind his team leader number two alan prost hill in third place and damon hill is in fact lapping quicker than prost is to the tune of some half a second so great stuff this yeah and damon hill has just gone round just one second of schumacher's 1992 lap record and he is starting to threaten alan prost from whom he admits he's learned a heck of a lot this year but there is no question of damon hill deferring to alan prost any more than there was any question of jauner lacy in the ferrari deferring to gerhard berger his teammate damon hill will want to finish ahead of prost just as much as prost wants to finish ahead of damon hill and as as you look inside the cockpit of damon hill's williams renner you will see a white light appearing every so often at the top inside there it is that is the rev limiter coming into action which restricts the revs of the engine and puts on the light and tells him when to change gear we've got news from barry sheen in the pit lane murray i had a look at when they took the wheel off of hacken in his car the reason he's come in it was there was fluid leaking from the rear caliper it looked like the the feed to the caliper on the left rear had broken so there was no way of fixing it so he won't definitely won't be out thank you for that barry sheen and we've just been riding with gerhard berger who's having a scrap with aguri suzuki who is driving in the australian grand prix like he's never driven before he's finished in the points uh only once in his career and he's going jolly well here there is the japanese driver he's had a third place in his home race in japan and gerhard berger goes through in fifth place right behind him in the footwork in the white car number 10 is aguri suzuki in seventh position almost in the points is martin brundle in the newly-delivered luge you just saw him come around the left hander there it's a pretty close thing between berger suzuki and brundle in fact five seconds covers those three places fifth sixth and seventh with center leading cost second hill in third position we're riding with hill now as he comes up to one of the there's damon hill and there's only 1.8 seconds now between him and alan cross damon hill has taken another second out of his team leaders advantage and you can see cross going around the left hander and ahead of us is i think it's derrick it is derrick warwick because we've seen it's a footwork bugen i'll tell you what it's not shy and horse power out of the corner either i mean you don't pop away from a reno that easy look at that and it is derrick warwick with a barn with a wing on the back who is in 12th position derrick warwick and damon hill is trying to lap him derrick warwick's got his own problems and that's maintaining his speed and i would expect derrick to move over and let damon hill through because he knows that hill is lapping him and like the experienced polite grand prix driver that he is very worrying does adjust that but damon hill was 1.8 seconds behind cross cross second hill third has he lost any time as a result of trying to get past we have lost all that much because you can see alan cross going through boston's hairpin in front of him fennel leads 13 seconds now between him and frost there is the lead up and he's on his 37th lap now out of 79 rhythm is the name of the game in crawl-free racing maintaining the original well it's extremely important on any circuit in these cars they are so twitchy so pointy so agile even on the fast open circuits it's extremely important that on these very closed circuits the street circuits at monaco and here in australia you have to be very very smooth you have to feed the power and although mind you have to feel there helped a bit with the computer in that department but smoothness is what it really is all about with these very powerful cars and senna coming up to lap jj leto who is ninth in the salvo who politely takes his hand off the steering wheel points to the right which means past me on my right and senna does exactly that and incidentally as prost and hill pull out to pass mark blundell in the lisa reno they are absolutely together i wonder and this is no disrespect to damon hill but either prost is tiring or we know damon hill is charging and he's certainly carving into the frenchman's lead over him the centers in front of both of them well i think alain frost has done enough to increase his life not to be tiring i would think that he's driving as well as he possibly can i just think damon hill is driving better at this stage yes here here and damon is performing magnificently at adelaide has as he has all through practice and we should not forget that it's the first time that he's driven in australia it was the first time he had driven in suzuka two weeks ago when he finished in fourth position and he found that a very difficult circuit to master as everybody does adelaide is easier and damon hill has taken like a duck to water and look what he's doing to the four times world champion and i'm prost on that 38 center leading by 13 points hill is third behind prost alessi in the ferrari is in fourth position and that's the spinner that's that's gunnar again yeah i really really really think that uh gunnar is not not up to it and uh i hope he's now retiring uh and burger is in fifth position martin brunwell is in the points and uh very getting closer and closer to gail hart burger suzuki is down to seventh position because martin brunwell in the liga has moved up into the sixth position ahead of aguri suzuki the japanese driver in eighth position is vendlinger ninth is leto tenth is patrese 11th is blundell and in 12th position derrick warwick oh this is great williams reno versus williams reno alan prost in his 199th grand prix versus damon hill and he is only in his 18th grand prix two of them last year in the bravum and i don't mean this unkindly can hardly count because it was certainly not a race-winning car so damon in his first real grand prix season has had this magnificent success of three wins and four second places as i said he's second in the championship but the man who is only two points behind him in the championship is two places ahead of him in the race ayrton center lap 39 and more news from barry sheen in the pits yeah thanks mario i just had a word with the williams guys there's no problems with frost the only problems i said was he's moaning about the traffic and the fact that he wants to look after his tires so maybe we know how canny frost is he's just saving his tires for the end of the race i i love uh i love that remark alan alan frost is moaning about the traffic i mean to me it's inconceivable that somebody can drive at the speed that he's driving and still have a dispassionate conversation with his team do you wish you had radio in your day no i'm rather glad i didn't actually but i mean i can only really comment that it's the same traffic for damon as it is for frost and he's got the same tires as damon has got so i'm sure damon wants to look after his tires as well yeah and they're coming up to lap andrea de chisor is number four in the tirral yamaha who is in the 15th position and they're in the 15th position and they're coming up to laffey for the second time past goes frost and through the s's round he didn't need that well he just lost about maybe half to a second then because um frost was able to get through on the inside sweeper and have a nice clean ride through the right hander and exit onto the straight and damon just got caught slightly so all that good work that he's made up over the last lap or so you'll have to try and get back now now we've been watching frost and hill but meantime airton senna's lead has been reduced because believe it or not both the williams are actually lapping a second quicker and there's the reason you see senna just completes the lap ahead of aguri suzuki and behind suzuki who is in seventh place is vendlinger and leto so senna's had to scrabble his way past suzuki leto vendlinger and comas there who has been lapped twice and that's a problem that's going to face alan ala frost and damon hill shortly senna's lead is now just under nine seconds frost and hill are thinking of each other they're also thinking of the traffic frost is up to comas now comas who is double lapped in 14th place passed by alan frost and alan frost has been accused in the past of not being very good in traffic he's not doing very badly at the moment no he's doing very well but the master in traffic has always been center of course he he just double guesses the opponent in front of him he sees a gap and he goes for it the major problem damon's got as well is when you've got two cars traveling this way through together and you're coming up to lapper guy he looks in the mirror he sees one williams he pulls over lets it go through and then resumes his racing line and you're very close behind him of course he's going to inadvertently chop you up so it's something that damon really has to watch out for right well we're with frost now it's going to be his opportunity as he comes out of the hairpin and he goes by oh sorry we're with hill now my apologies and retirements from the australian draw three katayama shumacher vicar hacken and pedro lami and eddie ervine new normal came into the pits and has just read just spun and we think he's out and pierluigi martini is out see damon's actually lost quite a lot in that lap he had to go around the outside of the chap around that quick right hander which we really would have meant that he would have to have buttoned off considerably as to what would have been a flat out flat out corner and he's dropped now maybe a second to a second and a half back to williams in the top six proston hill second and third fighting each other behind air to the center ahead of jauna lacy's ferrari who is in fourth position 23 seconds behind hill and 16 seconds ahead of the second ferrari of gehrhard berger which is in fifth place in sixth position a long way back now but in sixth position and the points martin brundle eight and a half seconds behind burger seventh and last is bedwinger eighth and last is suzuki ninth is leto in the second salva tenth is riccardo petrezzi not a very good australian grand prix for him 11th mark londel in the second ligier derek warwick is 12th in the second footwork and air to the center that we are riding with is now on his 43rd lap coming up to the right hander and flinders bend past the packed house veranda into the left hander at east terris bend round the right hander again and flinders into east terris underneath the bridge into the left hander and markets turn there's the markets in front which are being redeveloped with the old facade stag turn the right hander leads into jones straight and this is 150 miles an hour to brewery bend slow down to about 95 up into sixth gear build up to about 300k and that's about 180 miles an hour hard on the brakes again from six to second for racetrack hairpin center leads all the corporate hospitality boxes on the left having a good time the only pity is that the sun is not shining as much as we've seen in australia in the past and on the other hand it isn't right it just went on exactly i was just about to say but hang on at least it's not raining ask the back grandstand to complete his 43rd lap goes airton center what what what is the left to say about this man and his incredible achievements three times world champion he's won four grand prix already this year that's superb victory in brazil and the even better one in donnington how does a design team wrap up a unique v6 24 valve engine into a two-door coupe we have put ourselves into this car the new unos 30x v6 the result of an obsession with perfection excuse me i'd like to talk to someone about insurance if you've had enough insurance company swahili come and talk to us at jm we'll give you straight talk up front what you are and aren't covered for at jm our policy is simple straight talk up front without the swahili talk up front without the swahili imagine the future for an airline that already flies more passengers than any other airline from southeast asia with the largest fleet of aircraft flying to five continents imagine flying malaysia airlines this is jackie stewart live from adelaide for the coverage of channel 9's australian grand prix you can see after 44 laps senna is still leading from croston hill but while we were in commercial in fact daemon hill life picture that we're looking at right now did in fact come into the pits and had another pit stop this is his second you can see the pit stop taking there and the clock ticking away it wasn't a particularly fast pit stop 6.31 seconds but lets him go back out with fresh rubber now he may well be able to catch alan cross right now this young man who i think has been the star of this weekend's grand prix so far could could certainly get a lot of ground back we'll have to wait to see in the meantime let's go back to our commentators murray walker and alan jones who are covering for the world and ahead of him is the salva of jj leto this as i said earlier on may well be ricardo petrez's last grand prix there are stories that he's going to be driving for alfa romeo in the british touring car championship two liter car championship next year and that would be something to see because ricardo is an enormously experienced and very capable racing car driver and in the hands of nicola larini the alfa romeo has won the german touring car championship and their entry in britain would be very welcome with ricardo at the wheel but meantime airton center goes through on his 47th lap 15 seconds ahead of alan cross comfortable do you think alan yes i think he's pretty much controlling the race i see the williams pits are getting ready for a stop and also the mclaren pits are getting ready for a stop so once again the cat and mouse but the thing is airton really has an enormous advantage because even if the mclaren pits you know lose three or four seconds he has got that in hand he has earned that so i mean he's in a really good position and airton center has a virtually non-stop conversation with the pits where am i how far ahead of the man behind me am i am i coming up to somebody in front he thinks thinks thinks all the time and you saw the mclaren mechanics in the pit lane ready to change tires well they're certainly not changing tires for micka hacken and he has long since disappeared from the australian grand prix they're waiting for this man airton center to come into the pit lane and he keeps going he's through the s's for another lap he's on his 48th lap now oh we have a marshal there that lost his hat and uh trickily gamely went out to retrieve it what could be interesting is now that damon hill is on his second set of tires they're well and truly up to working uh he's about 18 seconds or maybe a little bit more behind than center center is coming in for a stop it's going to cost him a little bit of time for his acceleration the acceleration time he has to go out onto working temperature now hill is about 20 odd seconds behind center center is really going gangbusters now to try and extend that lead because he knows he's going to come into some tires he's doing very quick laps in the low 17s and 17 zeros day was doing sort of 18s at the moment but when when airton comes in for a new set of tires he comes back out damon will be a lot closer to him and that could be a very interesting part of the race we will soon see the development of that we hope as we watch airton center knowing that i can i can see out of my window the mclaren mechanics they're standing by their tires and wheels and yet again airton center goes through and they may be ready but he's not you see as as alan jones has said earlier on while the lap times are satisfactory and are not increasing there's really no need for anybody to come in and if you come in it's not just the fact that you lose time and alan cross is going to demonstrate that now it's the possibility that something could go wrong in the pits that the car could drop off the jack that the wheel could stick all sorts of things can go wrong which can make the situation even worse happily for alan cross nothing went wrong although 6.92 seconds these days is nothing to write letters about saying how well you've done well it was 6.92 when they actually dropped him on the ground but he also lost a little split seconds getting away almost stalled it so now are we going to see damon hill up there again and i remind you that two of the stars who started this race michael schumacher and micka hakenen are out because michael schumacher went out as early as lap 15 when he had a problem micka hakenen went out on lap 26 and running now in australia out of the 24 who started there are 16 left so eight retirements air tucena is the fastest so far with a lap time of one minute 17.04 and that is uh about 1.4 seconds of schumacher's time and there you see frost and hill together battling for second again yes maria might take this opportunity while we're on the win is to have a look at the rear wing such as the the wind tunnel work that these people do i was asking the other day why don't they put the return that is the wicker bill or the gurney flap or whatever you want to call it it's a little bit of return metal on the top of the rear wing why don't they run at the full width across the rear wing here we're looking at it now on the right hand top of the wing and they said well by running it right across the wing it does give you more downforce but it also gives you more drag and by leaving a little space between where it ends to the end of the wing is that is the best compromise between drag and downforce and that in modern formula one racing that could mean only half a mile and half a kilometer an hour one kilometer down the straight but that's the degree they get you can see on the bottom and as on the top they actually stop the gurney flap about six inches before it gets to the end of the wing and the downforce from the wings of these cars is such it weighs up in about two tons of downforce and if you could get the car up there and drive it fast enough you could literally drive it upside down at about 60 miles an hour and it would stay on the surface that it was on that's how much downforce they produce and because of that of course the suspension has to be very very stiff indeed and that's why active suspension is such a benefit and they're losing it at the end of this year but meantime frost is starting to get into danger of losing his second position etton senna's got no problem he's on his 51st lap out of 79 the australian grand prix is starting to draw to a close alan prost is 33 seconds behind the brazilian although he's laughing some one point one and a half seconds quicker at the moment damon hill is the fastest man on the circuit he just gone around only half a second slower that 116.595 compares with schumacher's 1607 a half record from last year damon hill is the man to watch at the moment third place ahead of a lacy who is in fourth position uh gerhard burger is fifth in the second ferrari martin brunberg is in sixth position beglinger is seventh suzuki is eight leto is in ninth place patrese is 10th londel is 11th derrick warwick is in 12th position then barricello 13th comas 14th the cesaris is in 15th and he is in the tirral and it really now looks sadly as though tirral are going to be the only constructors team apart from lola who are not here who are not going to have scored any constructors world championship points in 1993 so ricardo patrese in for more tires and he comes in from 10th position and that means to say that uh martin blundell will almost certainly move up as patrese exits after a nice clean yeah there's blundell right behind him patrese is now in a situation where he could be losing 10th position could be losing 10th position for blundell because patrese is on cold tires blundell is on very warm ones and hill is back pressing 16.115 that's one tenth of a second off the record there is the battle between mark blundell now it's all hotting up into the pits comes gerhard burger fifth position in the ferrari but martin brunwell is 27 seconds behind him so gerhard bagger should get out and he does so still in fifth position he's had a third and a fourth this year and three six positions not the best of seasons for gerhard burger who after all won here in adelaide last year and in 1987 and he rejoins ahead of the paltai lapped andrea de cesares the only chiral yamaha left in the race after akio katayama retired earlier on summer possibly and we're on lap 53 and daemon hill has just broken the lap record superb one minute 16.078 he is really on a charge to try to displace alain uh prost from second position well murray you can bet your life that uh ron dennis has just passed that on to etten center and etten center will be saying himself right time for me to come in and get some new rope yes and uh i have actually i'm sorry to say malign uh schumacher daemon hill has actually equaled the lap record to the nearest thousandth of a second but the way he's going now i have little doubt that he will improve on it because he can see the target he's got the incentive and he must be hoping that uh something happens to etten center because if something happens to etten center and he can get past alain prost he could make it a fourth win in 1993 for the popular englishman which on top of the three that he's already gotten the two that he might have had in britain germany not to mention the one in spain that uh escaped it would be a quite incredible quite incredible achievement prost is now behind jj leto and this will give no doubt about it daemon hill the opportunity opportunity to close right up on prost because i don't think uh leto is going to let the frenchman through here well now if he couldn't have got past leto before that right hand he really needed to do that now leto will hold him up i know if you can see he's going to hold him up through this and that'll give daemon the chance to get right up on it yeah and if prost doesn't time it right and he has timed it right and daemon hill follows him through magnificently i think that was a good bit of driving by jj actually alan because i think he saw them both yeah so this is the battle number two multi-world champion four times alain prost chased by comparative newcomer his teammate daemon hill prost has won seven times this year daemon hill has won three times between them they've taken the williams team to victory in the constructors world championship and they both go inside a tail ender and racetrack hairpin into panic bend the fast left hander which leads into the kink to the right after they've crossed the victoria park race course down to boston's hairpin the slowest corner on the course and daemon hill is getting close enough fairly soon he needs to have his front wing right underneath the rear wing of our prost williams to stand a chance of passing the frenchman but he's getting closer what he does need to do is place himself in a position behind prost coming through the right hand on a sir jack brabham straight just about this maybe a little bit closer than this have a good run through that right hand so he can take advantage of the toe down the straight and pull up under brakes to get him through the right hand hairpin at the end of the straight center really should be coming in in a second because he is losing almost 0.7 to a second per lap so he needs to come in any lap and look at this from our steady cam in the helicopter which gives us a wonderful picture looking down on the cars as they enter the sir jack brabham straight the past is part of it he was too far back he's got a 29 second lead he can he can take all the time in the world over this nice and easy don't need to bother another five second stop but even though they don't need to bother they get one i think that's the quickest tire stop we've had so mclaren operates the quickest task that we've had here in australia today and they operate just as well under pressure as under more relaxed conditions and airton senna now on his 56th lap as up to suzuki who is in eighth place in the footwork mogan and desperately anxious to keep it and concentrate on where he's going this is giving damon hill another opportunity where with hill now across the second ahead of him aguri suzuki in the footwork mogan is ahead of the cross and the japanese driver is certainly not making it easy he's not yielding willingly but as you said earlier that mogan engine's got yes it's not suffering and look at the size of the rear wing on it as well right yes you can see that the footwork car has got what i call the double decker rear wing the normal one with another wing in front of it because the rules require you oh cross this through now is damon hill going to be able to follow suzuki should let him through and he's done so this is this is a real battle and we're on lap 56 meantime with senna's car stopped his lead is down to 17 seconds but he's up to speed again on a new rubber no problems for him and the chesaris is the man now in the chiral yamaha post is through now they're up to the s's and damon hill follows through i didn't think for a moment he'd get through and in the background was derrick warwick in the footwork and they're slicing their way through the field you can see what it is now to drive in traffic as a formula one driver and is it ever a case alan of shutting your eyes and going for it sometimes but really damon has a harder job than allane because the guy looks in his rear view mirror he's he knows what a williams reno looks like he moves over and then resumes his racing line and cuts it so it's a lot more difficult for damon to come through traffic than it is for all a well now he's up to he being an approach is up to carl vendlinger's salva ilmore salva salva mercedes call it what you will with the yellow wing mirrors and vendlinger is in seventh place behind martin brundle who is still in sixth position in the liga burger is fifth in the ferrari a lacy is fourth in the ferrari and we're riding with the third place man damon hill coming up from the crowded grandstand this is going to be interesting now because bros is coming out of the right hand so even if he does manage to get past the one in front of him he still has another one and this could be a good chance for damon right well the one immediately in front the black car is the salva of austrian carl vendlinger who is gerhard berger's protege fourth position in italy and look down that's the right-hander wakefield turn up flinders street into east terrace band around the s around the market turn that's stag turn the stag pub now if he gets in his way through the right hander onto the straight and cross has to come off the accelerator because it's no i don't think he'll get the benefit of a toe from him right cross through his vendlinger gonna let damon hill through indeed he is stays wide damon hill takes the opportunity to close right up there is the rear wing of al-aham cross williams renner these on-car cameras are fantastic we're in the race with damon hill and al-aham cross and airton center is on lap 59 out of 79 frost and hill are about to start their 59th lap and it looks to me as though they're coming up to martin brunwell i just saw a flash oh that is jj leto and he's done it at the s's doesn't come out in front of anybody mercifully right alan mercifully he spun to a standstill without taking anybody with him that's all too easily done there a very narrow entrance it is it really does suck you in that corner got me today but he was a very lucky boy not to have lost control on him because the trouble is there the entry speed is so quick and the minute you hit the curb if the car goes near as we can see now he's hit that it's throwing him off look at that he was very a lucky not to flip completely and b not to have flown straight across the road into a very unrelenting cement wall he very nearly did a christian fitti paldi you'll remember that uh fitti paldi at monza coming up to try to take a place from pierluigi martini his teammate on the last lap did a complete 360 degree rotation and got away with it well jj leto wasn't quite that but it was spectacular enough and it also again shows how strong these modern grand prix cars are and we are now on the 60th lap of the 79 lap last grand prix of 1993 with airton santa coming up behind rubens barraquello in the sole remaining jordan with eddie irvine having driven into the wall some way back and barraquello is in 12th place he's been left of course now again by prost now again by damon hill but i know alan that when you're in damon hill's position you have to think ahead all the time and plan your progress to try to decide where you'll get past the man in front but of course it's made even more difficult when you're lapping people it certainly is i mean there's no doubt about it formula one is a moving game of chess i mean you grab it you grab an opportunity when it arises of course and if someone opens up their gap or misses a gear or leaves you breaking a bit late you take advantage of that but all things being equal you really have to try and work out your passing move one two even three laps before you do so center is coming up to fourth place jean alacey in the ferrari center's hand comes off the steering wheel i don't know whether to make a signal to join the lacy or take a rip off all right i think a rip off of course means a transparent flexible bit over your visor which you literally rip off when it gets all the flies and it's gehrhard berg and he's coming up to in fifth position and the lacy gehrhard berger's teammate is in fourth place in the second behind damon hill who is third come gather around the old camp fire what's cooking up tonight sweet onion soft and golden brown beef steak done just right let's slap it on a toasted bun and add the barbecue sauce where's the best place for this cake you know when you choose valvoline oil you're buying the best possible protection for the best possible price i mean you might want to run the world's top motorsport teams with it nor to protect millions of dollars worth of equipment with it and you may never want to run major transport fleets with it some people do that's why they choose valvoline oils people who know use valvoline here's something altogether different in a credit card no annual fees low interest and up to 55 days interest-free credit all on one card the co-op visa card now what would you like to do with your existing cards the co-op visa and all together different credit card come on we're back in adelaide for channel 9's live coverage of the australian grand prix after 61 laps here at mistedna still leads by 20 seconds now over alan cross damon hill is still in third place lessee and berger brundle and vendlinger we had one incident in the last few minutes but some of you who have been watching our telecast already saw that jj leto is out of the race so now we join murray walker and alan jones keeping up our coverage of this great race is and in sixth position behind burger is martin brunnel seventh is bedlinger eighth is Suzuki ninth is petrazy in tenth position is derrick warwick 11th is mark londell 12th is rumens barricello who has been left 12 uh twice as has eric comas 13th in 14th position left three times is andre de cesares 15th is toshio suzuki who has been left four times and he is the last runner at the present moment lantern center is now his 64th lap 15 laps to go and he's well through of course onto his 64th lap as second and third place men alan prost and damon hill go through this is john the lady in fourth position and he's coming down to the end of this subject and damon hill has well and truly shattered the lap record i i said i was confident that it would be going that's the figure 115.914 and that compares with schumacher's 116.078 so there's a super new lap record for david one watch jauna lacy in fourth position it's an interesting before that you're mentioning about uh center murray he still holds very close to his heart and he still likes to jump in a car and have a go when he can and he's even contemplating building his own go-kart track in brazil uh here he's properly so he can hop in and have a go when he wants so he still thinks it's the purest form of motor sport well he can certainly afford it i should think his uh income must have just about matched the national debt of brazil which is pretty considerable and center actually doing a bit of curb hopping now i don't know when what went wrong just a momentary distraction and he's got the lapping problem again but it's less of a problem for ayrton center than it is for most people well when you've got this buffer you can when you've got this buffer you can make a beautiful mistake so you can take a few little liberties and if you drop a second here or drop a second there it really doesn't matter because he is very very comfortable as you can see he's 18.1 seconds in front of frost he's lapping at about the same time anyway so he is really he's just ruling this race yeah he's just left one of the la rosa's either suzuki or komas for which it is because as you can see they've got very similar helmets but uh toshio suzuki is only in his second grand prix and there's always a big problem if you're an experienced grand prix driver that you'll come up to somebody who is new who by sheer lack of experience can do the wrong thing at the wrong place and take you off well that's exactly right because as you progress through the year you do 16 grand prix's and you learn who you can double guess and you can learn who you can be cheeky with who you can take liberties with and of course if you don't know the driver in front you think well hang on now what's he going to do should i pass here in theory if it was joe blow i could do it i don't know this character all that well i'm going to take it i'm just going to just hang back a bit and look yes as i remember alan jones used to do with kalos wajaraj absolutely so derrick warwick is still going strong there is andrea de cesares and marvin blundell and blundell in the ligier and derrick warwick are fighting for 10th position so there is the battle for 10th in the background derrick warwick in the white and red footwork crouching down and it just shows underlines derrick warwick derrick warwick's toughness because he hasn't driven in australia for three years he spent the whole of friday in bed with a temperature of about 104 very heavy congestion got into the sauna professor sid wakins who is the fisa doctor said if you're all right in the morning i'll let you into the car meantime christian fittipaldi was hopping about on one foot hoping that derrick warwick wouldn't be all right in which case he would have taken over his drive in the footwork car but unfortunately for christian and fortunately for derrick derrick was all right yesterday qualified 17th was 10th fastest in the warm-up this morning and is now having as you can see this battle for 10th position as airton senna goes through to lap mark blundell for the second time and blundell is in 11th place in the blue ligier well there is no doubt about it senna has got this magnificent race winning rhythm he's just sailing through the traffic he's uh he's lapping slower than prost and hill but he's on lap 67 now out of 79 just 12 laps to go i think derrick warwick's done an amazingly good job considering the physical condition he's in he's i know he's absolutely full of pills he was up all last night it's the the last thing you want to go into a grand prix particularly a tough one like this where it's a street circuit in his condition and i think he's going really well yes derrick warwick may be one of the older men in formula one at 39 but uh he wants to carry on his heart's in single seat as he drove for perjou in sports cars last year and andre in the cesaris is holding out and center up we may be having a discussion about that after the race the blue flag waves at andre the cesaris to say there is somebody who wants to pass you my friend and senna is the man and he goes past and derrick warwick is now coming up to lap andre the cesaris but i was saying uh derrick wants to stay in formula one he was the perjou world sports car champion last year and winner of lamont but his heart's in single seaters and a lot of people have written him off in formula one but i wouldn't be at all surprised if he's not there in 1994 now i while i've been talking i've been watching the times and uh without jumping up and down too excitedly at the moment i can tell you that alan prost being pushed very hard indeed by damon hill who is tucked up under his rear wing is now less than 12 seconds behind at andre senna who may well be pacing himself to the end he may be but significantly prost is down a lap 24 seconds quicker than senna now that is a lot now there's not a great deal of distance to go senna could be just pacing himself and looking after few on tires but uh we want to be careful of course traffic oh oh no on the power just a little bit too early he thought he was going to get a long side prost he got a little bit excited put on the accelerator look at that tire too the front right hand tire is starting to have blisters in it you can just see it see there on the front right on the left hand side of the right hand tire it's breaking up a little bit he got onto the power a little bit too soon and the back just broke away that is a shame because he was really pushing prost well you can't blame damon hill for trying he said uh yesterday well he went off yesterday but he he actually had a chance oh here it is the replay take us through it along yeah well he's much tighter line and not an ideal racing line he decreased the the apex of the corner so therefore he was on a harder lock than what he would normally be he's jumped onto the accelerator to try and get alongside because his front wheels were turning more than what they would normally be the backs come out on him well you can't blame him for trying he could see an opportunity to get through and take uh second place yet again having already done so four times this year and he tried just that little bit too hard well i think that's blown second position in australia for him because we're on lap 69 now and frost incidentally has uh not cut any further here's a replay you see he's on the inside now he should be way out to the left but he's on the inside he's got alongside him he says right now i'm going to try and have drag him into the next left hand he's giving it the welly too much bang well frost was lucky that hill did not hit him and hill was lucky that he didn't hit the wall because at least he was able to get going again and such was his lead over jaune alacey's ferrari hill in third position and alacey in fourth position but hill is still third so it looks like williams second and third another win for mclaren to make their fifth of the year the second highest behind uh with the williams reno team for whom frost as an individual has won seven draw free and damon hill three making 10 in all but uh i certainly wouldn't have put any money on mclaren winning five grand prix when 1993 began they've done a fantastic job they certainly have when you consider that they went into perhaps the first quarter to half of this season with a ford engine that perhaps wasn't as powerful as shoe markers so he's been able to do that then of course when he had the the more powerful version later on in the year he's uh really truly made the best use of it we're with uh ninth place ricarda patrese now who is closing on eighth position aguri suzuki in the footwork mugan and suzuki actually is quite well known for tiring in the race derrick warwick now has got uh alain frost breathing under his rear wing looking to go through and lap the englishman again derrick warwick who is in tenth position and senna is is into the 70s in terms of laps now he's on lap 71 in this 79 lap australian grand prix as alain frost goes through and uh frost was two seconds over two seconds two and a half seconds slower than senna on that lap and you can see the reason frost has had to get involved with the traffic the traffic of derrick warwick and mark blundell they're battling for 10th position and the order on the 71st lap with eight to go including the one they are on senna leads frost by 15 seconds frost is now 20 seconds ahead of hill after hills spin in fourth position behind the williams are the two ferraris sorry elacey and then the ferrari of berg of fifth martin brundle is still in sixth position another point for the legio team who actually are not going to achieve their target of 30 points this year they'll have 23 if brundle finishes where he is seventh the lap behind is vendlinger eighth is suzuki battling with derrick warwick riccardo petresi is in 10th position mark blundell is 11 ferrie kelo is in 12th position and now senna that you're looking at through the s's driving smoothly and inexorably on is on his 72nd lap and it's not just a potential victory for mcclaran of course it is a potential fifth victory for the ford cosworth v8 a very handy little engine it's quite an interesting story when senna phoned up ron dennis and said uh look i just thought i'd ring you up and confirm i've actually signed to go with williams denis paused for a couple of seconds and said oh well okay well i guess i'd better tell you that i've just signed for pugio yeah and uh persia of course having uh won everything in sports car racing have taken a big gamble and have very made a very determined move to get into grand prix racing against their more experienced renault colleagues or rivals because it'll be a head-to-head confrontation between the two french concerns with riccardo petresi swarming all over aguri suzuki looking for eighth position and watch this and i'll tell you that if mcclaran wins today with airton senna at the wheel it will probably be the best and the most emotional presence that the brazilian forgive the team that he is leaving because it would mean that mcclaran would have won 104 grand prix to break the record which is jointly held by themselves and ferrari 103 grand prix victories but of course mcclaran have driven in many sorry ferrari have driven in many many more grand prix than mcclaran have off the top of my head it's something like 500 for ferrari in terms of all their drivers and about 390 odd for mcclaran so mcclaran here well i've just just got the figures it's ferrari 520 mcclaran 393 so far so if mcclaran can have won 104 out of the 394 with this race it's a superb achievement to make them the greatest grand prix time the team of all time in terms of victories lap 73 six to go airton senna leads frost by 15 seconds who leads hill by 23 seconds who leads alacey by 33 seconds who leads burger in fifth place by 13 seconds who leads bradmore in sixth position by 34 seconds and in seventh place it's vendlinger eight suzuki ninth patrese tenth blundell but there's a lot of action there derrick warwick is two laps back in 11th place ahead of barry keller 12th who is three laps back so it really does look as though with just those few laps to go things are set i can't see frankly anybody in the top six catching the man in front getting through and improving his place no not at all as i said before senna is totally controlling this race he's doing it easy and coming out to pass uh and rey de cedras brave move through there but no i mean he's totally controlling this race and uh he's going to win at the eddie's leisure damon all damon can do now is just drive and enjoy himself and maybe try and go for the quickest lap of the race and it means of course that uh mclaren will not only have got a record number of grand prix victories with 104 but they will very much have consolidated their second place in the constructors world championship it was nippon tuck between them and benetton who had been alternating for second place for some time benetton moved ahead for a while and then at the last grand prix in japan mclaren took that second constructors championship place from the endstone team endstone which is the headquarters of benetton and uh senna will finish second in the world championship i don't think he's going to be throwing his hat up in the air and cheering about that there's only one place that interests ayrton senna in the world championship and that is uh a win of course particularly as his not rival alain prost has now won more championships than he has this is lap 75 and that is damon hill dealing with the traffic i don't think damon hill who is now up with the battle between derrick warwick's footwork and the larus lamborghini of eric comass and uh derrick warwick is actually just checking but i'm pretty sure he's uh a lap ahead of comass and i know he's actually on the same lap so it is a battle for 11th position between derrick warwick in the white and red car comass in the yellow red and blue one the larus lamborghini and they are both of course holding up the williams reno yes you'll see the security that reno's power down the straight though look he'll get by the two of these before he gets to the right hander at the end of the straight and uh comass looks to follow him through but oh no you don't my friends that's a very experienced derrick warwick and just moves his car off a width across and that's all you need you see you can look at that circuit and uh you can say that's a very wide circuit in relation to the width of the width of the car hello is this oh it's vendling doing what his teammate jj leto did seems to be a salvo problem yes but getting away with it i was saying the circuit looks very wide in relation to the car but the racing line is only one line and if you're on the racing line it means that the chap behind you finds it virtually impossible to get past unless he's got so much grunt that he can just drive past and that that ain't possible these days well that's not this that's not the case in formula one there is only one optimum line around any circuit in the world and that is the correct line to take and these cars are so fairly even in their car abilities it's virtually impossible obviously to go around the outside so the track whilst it appears to be wide tends to get very narrow very quickly if you start going offline and particularly as the race progresses you get what they call the marbles which is the bits of rubber coming off the tire offline and if you get onto that it's almost the equivalent of hitting oil well airton senna must be metaphorically counting the australian dollars of which he will get quite a few in a few minutes time because he is on his 77th lap out of a short distance of 79 thanks to the peculiar start situation we have with two aborted starts and he is now 14 seconds ahead of a faster alain prost but frost is only about a second and a lap fast a lap faster and 14 seconds with two laps to go means that senna has really got it made unless something dreadful happens to the car he goes past jean alacey now so there are it looks like there are only going to be three men that go the full race distance airton senna race leader three times world champion is on his way to making it 35 draw free victories and to finish his mclaren career with four this year with honda in the past on a the highest possible note and and to take a supreme reputation to his new williams reno team for 1994 where he's going to be partnered by damon hill so he's on lap 78 just this one and the next one to go and he's got a commanding lead over alain prost nothing is going to stop the brazilian except a car problem because senna is far too experienced to put a wheel wrong at this stage of the race 13.2 seconds is his lead over alain prost who is now also on his 78th lap out of 79 and waiting for damon hill to go through in third position ahead of the two ferraris of jean alacey and gerhard burger hill is 28 seconds behind alain prost he's once again the fastest man on the track he's some two seconds a lap faster than senna he's almost two seconds a lap faster than alain prost this is alain prost but prost must have hoped to go out on the high note winning his last grand prix his 199th grand prix but it was apparently not to be well nevertheless murray a fantastic record i mean the man has raced uh 199 times 151 times he's had 33 poles he was four times champion 185 86 89 93 and he's had 41 fastest laps i mean it's not a bad record to be going out on and he is now into his last lap as of course is erthen senna now 12 seconds ahead of prost so i won't say that senna is contemptuously slowing down because that's the last thing i'd accuse him of but he's uh he's making very very sure there he is he's on his on his last lap and as i've said already several times this afternoon senna has given us a magnificent demonstration of how to go motor racing today his tactics have been superb his driving has been magnificent he's had the right tool for the job and you can see how close the two ferraris are behind him so it's a bit of a battle for fourth position between jauna lacy who is fourth and gehrhard burger who is fifth and burger will know that it's the last lap so so watch them as well as erthen senna who is nearly home to win the last grand prix of 1993 a magnificent achievement for him for mclarin and for ford and erthen senna wins in australia to the delight of his fans glenn dix as ever performs contortions on the line with the checkered flag alan prost finishes in second place nearly collected by the checkered flag of alan dix uh of glenn dix and uh now here is damon hill well damon hill has already had two third places this year he's going to be pushed down to third place in the world championship as a result of the win of erthen senna but damon hill can hold his head very high indeed at the end of a magnificent first full grand prix season and erthen senna if he stays true to form will be looking for a brazilian flag somewhere around the circuit to see he's looking you see he's looking now there's one there's one he'll help you out mate that could be a little difficult for him to get i think mate is probably about five rows up in the grandstand but uh erthen senna who is uh a very very fierce patriot a staunch brazilian always likes to drive home waving his national flag it looks as though he's not going to be able to do it in australia but uh there are plenty of fans of this great great driver here in adelaide as alan prost respectfully pulls up behind the race winner's car the yes i won folks and uh in third position damon hill fourth is a lacy in fifth position gehrhardt burger so both the ferraris are home as are both the williams and a super six position and another world championship point for englishman martin frontwell and for his ligier team what a classy win there for erthen senna and ron dennis the team manager he must feel boy i wish had him back next year he finally got his flag we will be back at the adelaide grand prix after this the 1993 fosters australian formula one grand prix proudly sponsored by holden schweppes mcdonald's family restaurants rocker brothers unis jm insurance leman wines the cooperative building society ford malaysia hatched the volvo 440 schweppes official soft drink supplier to the 1993 australian formula one grand prix back in adelaide and this is erthen senna the winner of the 1993 australian grand prix alan jones joins me now when they came back into the sheds there alan is noticeable that erthen senna did not acknowledge alan prost and alan prost did not acknowledge erthen senna we yet to see it oh here we go as you talk see they just shook hands they've kissed and made up that's taken a fair while actually i mean uh they were within arm's length there for about two or three minutes and finally they got together but what an impressive win by erthen senna and ron dennis there he must be ruining the fact that he's losing him for next season there's joe romero's with him he's another fellow brazilian and he's been with the mclaren team for many many years so he'll be quite emotional it is i mean the six years with a team it's a long time and he would have forged a lot of good friendships and comradie with most of the team and to be leaving them and going to another team you know it's emotional but the other hand i guess there's one very happy chappy there and that's frank williams because he's uh he's going to get him here we are peeling off a bit of the rubber what's this all about well you can see the little holes they're actually peeling off there so they're going to measure how much tread the tire has used and they will put that into their data so on the cool down lap there's a lot of pickup so he's scraping that pickup off so he can get his gauge to put into the holes to measure how much rubber has worn off during the race and i'll put that in so for next year when they come back they know exactly what's happening with the tires right here here we are the tremendous crowd that's out in front there for aton center the winner of the grand prix his national I Yeah, it's sad because you know you can say what you like about him. He's very political and he does a lot of his racing out of a cockpit in terms of who he is to be in the team with him and so forth. But at the end of the day he has got the figures behind him to back up what a great driver he was. I mean you just don't win that many Grand Prix's and have that many pole positions and four world championships if you're no good. I think he made a couple of little fundamental mistakes which shows that perhaps a little bit of inexperience still. I mean I think he just got maybe a little bit over excited when he got beside Alain Prost and thought well hang on this is my big chance now and he jumped on the loud pedal a little bit sooner than what he should have and paid the consequences. The back broke away. Look at this, this is nice to see. I thought it would be a long time waiting to see Hatton Center or Alain Prost smiling away at another and sharing the number one spot. Well Ken I might be cynical but Alain is going into the media next year and there's probably a very good chance you might have to do the odd interview with him. Well here goes the lowy and they're ducking and weaving all over the place. Much like they did on the race track and this is Earl Asjack who said earlier in the day the traditional part of the winners podium and certainly enjoyable for these drivers who have put in a couple of hours of really hard toilette there. There's one team member not letting a drop go to waste. Joe Ramirez, he'll be sorry to lose Hatton to the Williams because there he is there. He's a fellow Brazilian and they were very close friends and I guess if he stays with McLaren which he obviously has no other reason not to do so and Hatton goes off to Williams he's going to lose a good buddy so he's probably fairly emotional. Well this is just about his most relaxed winners celebration that we're seeing for some time. All three are really savoring it, particularly Hatton more than anybody else. It's nice to see that he's got a smile on his face because he tends to be very, very intense and right now we're going to take a short break. We'll be back with all the action and all the wrap up of today's Adelaide Formula One Grand Prix. Tonight motion picture's greatest hero faces a whole new threat. It's time for me to ascend. In 93's big movie premiere. Be gentle, it's my first time. A fiendish new villain. I am not a human being, I am an animal. And a lover. Yeah. Beyond the law. I am Catwoman, hear me roar. A brilliant all star cast. Don't adjust your scent. It's going to be a hot time in Cooltown tonight. Catwoman returns tonight, 8.30 on 9. On my own, on my own conditions with my car. But after a few laps, it starts to get more and more difficult to maintain the pace and Alan start to come a little closer and I manage just to stay there again, hanging there, the gap and then I decide to stop, which I think was a little bit too early. But anyway, I stopped and then when I came back, the new tires were not that much better. So it was very difficult to maintain a good pace, a good average to cope with Alan and he will. They were quicker than me at some stage in the race by quite a lot. But I guess I was able to maintain a better average. So I was able to maintain the gap and even grow it at some other stage. So it wasn't a race of going too fast. It was a race to maintain, question of maintaining a good pace. And I guess we managed to do so. The two restarts in any way disturb you? Well, I was worried at the start with the clutch. So actually on the third green flank, I didn't do a practice start. I was thinking maybe the clutch was having too much, too much trouble. But then it was OK. It was just a bit more adrenaline. This has been your last race for McLaren, at least for the time being. You've now raised the total to beat the Ferrari record of 103 Grand Prix. Obviously you've had six years with McLaren. Ron Dennis must be pretty unhappy to see you going. Well, the most important thing to all of us is to keep the good moments and keep the happiness that we had together. With Ron, myself, the whole team, all the sponsors, all the suppliers throughout those years, the different engine manufacturers, Honda, Ford, Philip Morris, Shell, Courtaulds, everybody, boss. I had a tremendous time. The records speak for themselves, the results, the championships. I got respect from the people who I worked with so long. I have tremendous respect for them as well. I leave friends behind. I think that's the best way to do it, leaving friends behind, winning last race, coping in an extremely difficult season with the technical reasons that we all know, and winning five races. It is tremendous. Time for a smile. Time for a smile. Thank you. Alan Frost, the end of a glorious career. Your final Grand Prix, I'm sure you would rather have won it, but you had a comfortable in the end second place. Yes. It was difficult race and for sure I would have loved to win it, but I knew it would be difficult today anyway. It was, I mean, the end of the season is more difficult for us because we lost part of our advantage and McLaren and Ayrton are going very well this end of the season. This track was difficult for us. And the rest, I think I did a good rest, but it was very difficult to do better than that. I can't complain about the traffic or things like this, but I think Ayrton had some problems too and the car was going, you know, was elastic. But I'm quite happy to finish with a good result and with a good rest. Alan, you seemed very close to the end of the race. Damon almost got through underneath you at the end of Brabham Strait. It looked like you were over to the left a little bit. Was that an intentional late entry that you had there because Damon seemed to have enough space to get through? What do you mean? If I went on the left? Yeah, you seemed to be a little bit more to the left when Damon got in there close to the end of the race. Yeah, he was quicker than me in the straight because he had different set up with the wing and I thought maybe, you know, if I wanted to overtake me, that was the best place. But I brake very late. I brake very late and that's why I went a little bit more to the left. So it wasn't a gentlemanly move, it was a late braking move. I didn't want to close the door. I just wanted to brake as late as possible and go, you know, and take my corner like this. We have less risk to touch each other. Well congratulations on your fourth world championship in so many Grand Prix. It's a great contribution to motorsport. Happy retirement and maybe we can play more golf. Yeah, exactly. Thank you, Jackie. Damon, great end to the season. You have got third in the world championship in this year's first year with three Grand Prix victories. Today's race, tell us about that. Well it was the case of the first part of the race, I was actually under pressure a bit from Schumacher. When he stopped early for tyres, I was watching his progress and he seemed to be going very quickly and then I got the message he was out. I thought he seemed to make quite a bit of a headway going to new tyres early so I went to new tyres quite early on and I caught up again, I closed the gap again to Alan and I thought well maybe it's worth stopping again. So that was the tactic really. I had no intention at the start of the race to stop twice but it seemed to be the right thing to do. I was able to challenge Alan and stay with him but the cars are so evenly matched around here it's just very, very difficult to find a way past. Now what about that little whoops towards the end of the race? Well like Alan said he braked very late and he had a late turn in and I thought well there's a bit of an opening here, I thought I'd just see if I stick my car in there, see if he gives way a bit but he didn't, he sort of held the tight line and so I had to put a bit more lock on and I was having a go really and I just lost it on the exit of the corner. Was it a little too much welly as Alan Jones suggested? Yeah it surprised me actually that I lost it but I'd gone all the way down on the marbles and probably got my tyres picked up a load of rubbish and stuff so the grip wasn't there and I just went sideways. Well congratulations on a great first full season in Formula One Grand Prix racing, you've got a new team mate next year so I wish you all a happy winter and well done to you all. Thank you very much. Now in your own language. And a good job there by Jackie Stewart. And what was it really like out there during some of the more nail biting moments of the race? We'll review the action after the break. Nice moment in tough sport. The ninth running of the Australian Grand Prix produced plenty of incidents to keep the drivers and fans right on the edge of their seats. Let's take a ride on that first crucial lap with Michael Schumacher. You've got the Well from that point of view Alan looked all fairly sedated or going to plan because he had the drama before the race actually got started but overall I mean it was Ayrton Centre from start to finish and I guess it was really what Damon Hill and Alan Pross were going to do. That's right I mean Ayrton did a blinding start, his normal Ayrton Centre rocket ship start off the line, got very quick entrance and exit through the first chicane, really controlled the race from that point on. A lot of interest towards the three quarter way through towards the end between Damon and Alan Pross and I think he probably got just a little excited, went in just a bit too tight, put a little bit more extra lock on than what he had normally on that corner and of course then when you put the accelerator down with the extra lock on it over accentuates the back of the car coming out. That's exactly what happened. But thank goodness a fairly incident free race in terms of damage to cars and drivers. And you were driving a fast lap up there with Murray Walker. Yes I had the privilege to be with Murray for the race and do the commentating with him and hopefully learn a couple of things. Ok alright we'll be back with more from Adelaide right after this. 7.30 Monday. I'm Jim Dial I don't believe we've met. Meet the new Frank. It's like we stumbled into a parallel universe where Frank is happy and well adjusted. Murphy Brown. You might just be visiting Mr. and Mrs. Frank Fontana. Followed by Love and War 7.30 Monday on 9. You saw it in the Celebrity Car Challenge earlier today and not too long away that we announced the prize. Remember all those people who phoned up yesterday afternoon you are still in the entry list and you're still in the running for that particular prize as long as you're the rest of the people obviously who have phoned up today. And joining me right now of course Murray Walker did you enjoy the race? I enjoyed it immensely Ken yes. I won't say it was a foregone conclusion because it was a long way from there but it was pretty clear that once Ayrton Senna got into that first corner first the way he did that the rest were going to be struggling and he drove an absolutely consummate race and I think it was the perfect way for him to go out leaving the McLaren team. Alright well you've got some hot gossip for us I believe. Yes I have indeed. One or two things have been happening during 1993 and will be happening in 1994. What's new for 1994? Well practically everything. Nothing stays the same in Formula One for long. South Africa and Donington are out. There'll be a new race in Argentina and a second in Japan. Refuelling will be allowed but active suspension, traction control, ABS and power brakes will be banned. And there'll be new teams, new drivers, new cars and new engines with Mercedes-Benz increasing their involvement. Lots to look forward to. There's been a major battle between the governing body and Formula One's constructors about the rules for Grand Prix racing and the constructors lost. So next year the cars will be simpler to reduce costs. The speeds may be a bit slower but no one will notice because the racing should be closer with refuelling and tyre changes to spice things up. After nine years of brilliant success with Lotus, Williams and McLaren Honda bowed out of Formula One in 1991 but now they're returning. Not with McLaren to everyone's surprise but with Lotus. And it's going to be a no holds barred race to win. But with Renault, Peugeot, Ford, Yamaha, Lamborghini, Hart, Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz all there too, they'll have to fight for it. American Indy racing was a whole new world to Nigel Mansell in 1993. New tracks, cars, engines, rules and politics. But he sensationally mastered them all to win the championship. So now they all know there's a life after Formula One and they want to live it. Especially Thierry Bootson, Derek Warwick, Bertrand Gachot and Mauricio Guzman. But is there going to be room for the Americans? Everybody wants Renault engines. They're the best there are and with Williams they've dominated Formula One for the last two years. McLaren tried to get them and failed and served Benetton so far. France's top Grand Prix team, Ligier, have them but they've yet to win. So with arch rivals Peugeot now with McLaren, will Renault take on another team? Stay tuned. In a sport where money is king, Benetton and Williams both have mega new sponsors for 1994. Williams will have a new blue and white livery for Rothman cigarettes whilst Benetton have done a massive deal with Japan Tobacco's mild seven brand. Camel and Cannon are out and not best pleased about it but Williams and Benetton are crying all the way to the bank. Times are changing in Formula One. Mansell's gone, Prost is retiring, Thierry Bootson is out and several other veterans look rocky. Now the new men get their chance. Men like Michael Schumacher, Mika Hakkinen, Rubens Barrichello, Mark Blundell, Carl Wendlinger. Which of them will be world champion first? Well the smart money's on Michael Schumacher. The Swiss Sauber team has had a great first Grand Prix season. No wonder they're backed by Mercedes-Benz. With a great racing tradition behind it, Mercedes mean to win when they enter Formula One. So just as they did in sports cars, they're using Sauber to polish their act. When Sauber win, expect to see their cars renamed, painted silver and carrying the three pointed star. And wouldn't that be great? You old gossip columnist, you. Hey, dragging out all that stuff. Well there's a lot around Ken and I thought people would like to know. Well well done and it's lovely to have your company once again down under. Thank you very much, lovely to be here. Okay. With that said, we conclude our profile on Formula One's most complex man, Ayrton Senna. when it comes to engine technology, Falcon with its alloy head, overhead cam and electronic fuel injection system is far more advanced than Commodore. is ahead in fact. How did that happen? I don't know. You can't beat the original. Johnny Walker Red Label. Bottled in Scotland. When it comes to performance, Falcon's engine has 148 kilowatts of power compared to Commodore's 130. A powerful reason for driving Falcon. Hey Dick. Dick? Sale of the century. I'm having so much fun. Are you? Watch it for the challenge. I like a villain so I'll take Red Simons please. Watch it for the fun. Silly boy. And watch it for Denise Trisdale. We've just recovered from the last time you were with us. We'll be back on Monday on 9. Next year Ayrton Senna will line up with the all conquering Williams team and although team mate Damon Hill is the same age, both are 33, the difference in experience is awesome. The two drivers' personalities are also markedly different. Neil Kearney continues the story. For Ayrton Senna, fame means having your birthday party in your driving suit surrounded by a few dozen of your nearest and dearest paparazzi. And Senna, unlike Nigel Bantzel in Britain, keeps going through his countrymen, though he doesn't, he stops. But Senna's so worshipped by his countrymen that when he won this year's Brazilian Grand Prix he almost had to run over a mob of them just to get back to the pits. I think it's a pity Johnny Herbert got stuck in there too and maybe he should have kept going then but eventually somebody was going to get run over. There are moments that you are not really willing to have people behind you, follow you here, follow you there, touching you here, a picture there, an autograph there. Sometimes you want just to be yourself and to be on your own, to concentrate on something, to do something and the fact that you have all the time this tendency of people following you is like you're here and people are all the time around you and they get near to you which is fine, sometimes they even hit you. They really, literally sometimes hit you, they go against you and you feel like an invasion. It's not such a good feeling. No wonder that after today he'll retreat to his house on the Ungustos Lakes near Sao Paulo, far from the piranhas of Formula One, where he'll settle down to some serious model helicopter flying and wrestle nothing more lethal than a jet ski. But come January he'll switch to racing's most powerful stable, Williams, alongside the likeable Damon Hill. In the new team, will you and Damon Hill have equal status? Practically yes, in theory no, because for the first time in my whole career I ask for a number one status. He's a much more prickly character from what I've learnt about him and he's very, very serious about his job. Last year you offered Frank Williams to drive for nothing. Are you getting paid for next year? I'm very happy about my future contract. So you're getting a little bit more than nothing? Yeah, you could say that. Well I'm not getting as much as him. That's a fact. Replacing Prost in the Renault Williams car will give Senna the chance to one day become the most decorated driver in history. But to become the most loved, you'll need a personality transplant. Even Frank Williams welcomes this intelligent and articulate man about as clinically as a new piece of machinery. That is arguably the best driver available, the best driver currently racing. The team is geared to being successful. All our partners, investors, sponsors expect that of us. And that is therefore the best piece of equipment if you like you can put in the machine to deliver to our requirements. 1991, a vintage year for Formula One and especially for Ayrton Senna, deservedly champion of the world for a third time. Even when Senna topped the class for the third time, some of Formula One's principals still thought that his education was sadly lacking. I think he needs to go to Charm School. I think his main sponsor wants to take him there, put him in front of a camera like we are sitting in front of now, play it back to him half a dozen times as to how he should project because he is the main arm of motorsport to project to the big wide media, the big wide world, to excite people about motor racing. That's one of your responsibilities as a world champion. Do critics hurt you? When they are destructive, yes. When they are constructive, they are welcome. But at the end of the day you have to do things the way you feel right and not the way people expect you to do or would like you to do because if you do that way you are nobody. Giving mass for the chance, Senna getting inside and contact, contact, Senna attacks Navini. Senna's answer has always been on the track. He'd rather be a less than charming world champion than a delightful also-ramp. There is a far from happy Ayrton Senna. By being a racing driver means you are racing with other people and if you no longer go for a gap that exists, you are no longer a racing driver because we are competing, we are competing to win and the main motivation to all of us is to compete for a victory, is not to come third, fourth, fifth or sixth. And if Cross comes up to any of them, this is the opportunity that Senna is looking for and he's going through, ouch, oh my goodness, this is fantastic. They meet, this is what we were fearing might happen during the race and that means to say that Prost has won the world championship at our Prost World Champion of 1989. Between them Senna and Prost have given Formula One a soap opera which sometimes felt like life or death and sometimes as trivial as Sylvania Waters. Second Senna and Prost going into the chicane together and somebody, there was a, somebody's put a wheel in the dust and a spinner there, it's Senna, Ayrton Senna. I won't ask you about Prost except to ask, did his mention of your Christian beliefs, did that hurt you? I'd rather not comment. You know, I'm not, I'm not really willing to talk about controversial things, you know, or negative things about our job or our career. There is enough controversy, day by day, that I feel one must avoid getting deeper and deeper into controversy and enough has been said between myself and Alain, he's retiring, I'm carrying on so it's better not to talk about it. Well, he's an incredibly complex man, Jackie Stewart, you've said it all so many, many times before but I don't think he's ever going to change, that's just the nature of the beast. It takes all kinds to make the world, he more than anything else speaks through his driving and he does that better than any racing driver in the world today. He is the man of his time and now that Alain has retired, he even is more so than. So I think we have a very worthy racing driver who I think has to be categorized as the best racing driver in the world. I think there are things that he could change to even improve life for himself. The thing I would most like to see is a happier Ayrton Senna, a man who might appear at least to enjoy his life more fully, to enjoy the quality that life can give him because he surely earned it. Your thoughts on the story? Well, I would agree with Jackie, he's an incredibly intense chap who thinks about everything. I've interviewed him umpteen times and asked him a question and he's looked at me for 20 seconds before he answers the question. You always have to remember Ken that Ayrton Senna is speaking in a foreign language. I don't know how good you'd be in Portuguese if someone was asking you a pretty difficult question but that's always a problem. But his communication is superb, he has a magnificent thinking brain as a tactician on the racetrack. He's a very difficult man to beat in a financial deal. They tell me when he's at home in Brazil he's a completely calm, relaxed, friendly, cheerful chap. I don't see very much of it on the racetrack but then his answer to that is I'm not here to be friendly and cheerful. I'm here to do a job of work to win and that's what I've got to do. So there, yes. After the break a tribute to the man who couldn't make it to this year's Australian Grand Prix, our old mate James Hunt. You can't touch this. You can't touch 9 for hot action premieres. You can't touch this. Tonight, Be gentle, it's my first time. a movie of 93. Yeah. Batman Returns Monday. You're mine. This is Rocky with no rules. You didn't. Gladiator. What do you want me to do? And Wednesday, There's been a mistake, I'm not him. Young Indiana Jones and the Great Escape. Oh my God, if he was in a coffin. In the big movies, Batman Returns, Gladiator and Young Indiana Jones. Only on 9. Excuse me, I'd like to talk to someone about insurance. Straight talk up front, without the Swahili. Take on a tough job in tough country, and you usually have to get there on all fours. But when that's not enough, you just have to use your muscle. That's why there's a whole range of Mitsubishi Tritons with all the muscle of a big V6. And if you can't rely on a big V6 with four wheel drive to get you there, who can you rely on? You can rely on a big V6. And if you can't rely on a big V6, you can rely on a big V6. From the people who brought us the bullet train, now comes a car that goes like a bullet. The fun team with the teddy bear mascot had elatedly arrived. The fun team with the teddy bear mascot had elatedly arrived. The fun team with the teddy bear mascot had elatedly arrived. The enthusiasm had defeated massive budgets. Eighteen years later, Lord Hesketh, now government chief whip in the House of Lords, remembers it all vividly. In 73, when we were running a march, we'd been quite lucky. 74 had been a very tough season because we'd built our own car. When you build your own car for the first time, there are all sorts of problems and management problems you have to learn about. In 75, we had a very competitive car. We went to the Argentine. He led the whole race and spun just before the end, and Fittipaldi won and he came second. We came into Europe. I remember going to Montjuic Park at Barcelona and the Ferraris crashed. We were 40 seconds in front and they waved an oil flag at him. I'm not sure whether James knew what an oil flag was at that point. So a certain victory disappeared into the Armco barrier. We were on pole position at Silverstone. We ran a very close second in France. We led race after race. We were getting to the point where every time we were in front, we got beaten. Then we came to Holland, where the Ferraris, because in that year the 312s were very quick. They were the car to beat. Zandvoort was a very quick circuit. Everyone said, there you have it, Regazzoni, Leider, front two, rose to the grid. I think we were third fastest. In a very tough race, the impossible happened, which is that Leider just couldn't take him. It was a fantastic moment, particularly, I might say, because one of the things about James was that he had huge support from the British racing public. We always went to a lot of trouble with our supporters. We used to make great effort with them. I remember riding around on the truck after we'd won. Zandvoort is a pretty gloomy place. It's just a lot of sand dunes. On top of every sand dune were these waves of Union Jacks. It was a wonderful feeling to feel that those people who travelled all the way around Europe and had seen frustration after frustration finally saw the result that they wanted. Even today, which is 18 years later, it still gives me goose pimples. Now adored by the nation and partnered by beautiful women, fun-loving James Hunt was a superstar. Nicky Lauda was world champion for Ferrari in 1975 and aimed to make it two in a row the next year. But now he was up against James Hunt, driving for McLaren after a depleted wallet had forced Alexander Hesketh out of Formula One. James and Nicky were rivals, but always liked and respected each other. I remember very well in 1976 I had my accident. I couldn't race for three races. But James was pressing on all through the year. And I must say today that the McLaren he was driving was not as competitive as my Ferrari. And in the end he did beat me by one point at the Japanese Grand Prix for the championship. So from my point of view, James was an incredible personality. Because you could see him with the people on the street talking, low-key maybe, and you could even put him on the table with the Queen of England. He would always know how to behave. For me he was the most charismatic personality that's ever been in Formula One. With four wins for Lauda's Scarlac Ferrari in the first eight races, 1976 looked a lost cause for James and McLaren, although the Spanish race had seen a second superb Grand Prix win for the Englishman at Harama, in spite of initially being disqualified for a technical infringement. James stood on the top step of the rostrum in front of King Juan Carlos, one step above Lauda. Six races later, at the Nürburgring in Germany, Lauda nearly died as a hideous fire engulfed his Ferrari. Amazingly, a badly scarred Niki was back three races later in Italy for an almost unbelievably heroic fourth place and three vital points. James won the next race in Canada and the following round 15 at Watkins Glen in America. Lauda was third, and now the chips were really down for the vital last race in Japan, with a confident Niki leading the championship by a mere three points and trying to out-sight James. At quarter to eight in the morning when I was still asleep, there was a great banging on the interconnecting door of my room, so I went and opened it and there was Niki already in his overalls, marching into my room and saying, morning, I'm going to be the final champion today. In the early morning hours, Britain excitedly turned on the TV for pictures from Japan. Despite appalling weather, they looked great as James took control. It's James Hunt who takes the lead in the Japanese Grand Prix, which fellow Rick John Watkins tried to overtake him, but they swung round the right-hander. Hunt leads from the thing, and fifth, or sixth, is Niki Lauda. To win the championship, James had to finish at least three points ahead of Lauda, and on lap three, it looked as though he had them. Niki's Ferrari was in the pits and the Austrian was getting out of it. He had no sadness to race in these conditions, he said, and walked away with James still in the lead. Oh, and Brambilla chopping inside him. Brambilla trying to get past James Hunt. Hunter's got the line. Brambilla trying on the other side. Brambilla's going through and Hunter's let Brambilla, no, he hasn't let him pass. Five by five, Brambilla up, and Brambilla spins! And he missed Hunt by inches. This is what James Hunt must have been afraid of. But the drama continued. In came James with a puncture, down to fifth when he needed fourth. Lauda could only watch and hope, but James finished third for the vital four points he needed. He was world champion of 1976 when he arrived home at Heathrow. James inspired a lot of drivers and a lot of young people in the early 70s, and I can remember watching him actually win the championship in Zuzuka when he just got those vital points when Niki Lauda retired from the race. Just fantastic. I mean, I'm in shock really today, because I think you'll agree any 45-year-old to pass over at that age is just astounding. He was always capable of embarrassing somebody with his attitude or a joke. He was not very interested about other people's opinion. He believed very much in his own values and his own reasons. And whether they were sometimes making people uncomfortable or not was not a problem for him. I think even in fact sometimes he was even capable of going too far even for himself just to let people more uncomfortable with him. But it was his nature, his character, and I like him. I like him the way he was. He was an incredibly contradictory man in so many different ways, and his lifestyle was to say the least maverick. As a racing driver, he was also quite unconventional. His mode of dress was something that took everybody by surprise and sometimes shock. While he was becoming world champion, he had already become quite extreme in some of his habits. And that was one of his charms in a way, because James Hunt was always his own man. And because of his public school education, because he was very well educated, very well spoken in particular with a great command of the English language, one assumed that all of those other things he was fully aware of. The fact that if he arrived in a well-souled t-shirt and a rally jacket with a pair of well-used jeans and maybe not even socks, for sure no socks, and sometimes with sandals and sometimes without shoes, that he knew what he was doing. And the conventional sponsors, governing bodies, motor racing people, would have expected a slightly different coat of dress for those circumstances. James must have been aware of it, did not care, it was James Hunt, he made his statement and he lived with it. Now everybody wanted James and he reveled in it. Don't go over there. That's alright, that's alright, that'll kick there. That's alright. But James was still a racer. Two more years with McLaren brought three more wins. In 1979 he joined the Wolf team. With failure at Monaco after 92 Grand Prix and 10 wins, his racing career was over. I've stuck it out this long because I've been trying very hard and we've been looking for light at the end of the tunnel, myself and the team, done a lot of testing to try and improve the car, and basically now it appears evident that without building a new car for which there isn't time or getting another one, all of which possibilities we've examined and found impossible, I don't really stand a chance of winning a race this year. And on that basis, for me the risk is too great than to drive for sixth place. I'm interested in driving to win, but not more than that. Unfortunately I felt that with the danger and things I've had to knock it on the head. Time to start a new career, exploiting his knowledge and experience of Grand Prix racing and his natural flair with words, talking about the sport that had brought him fame and fortune. He was one of the commentators that I truly enjoyed listening to. The combination of Murray Walker and James Hunt, it was quite extraordinary really, they were totally opposites, and yet James' contribution was always to the point, extremely critical, controversial, in some cases incredibly pointed towards a driver's inabilities, while at the same time always very complimentary when the time was right for James and his view to say it. And there's a lot of grey commentators who never quite get to say what they feel they would like to say or dare say, and sometimes say it off camera but won't say it on camera. That was not James Hunt. Here is race leader Nigel Mansell, he comes up alongside and takes Duddy, Alio, they clip each other and that's where Alio went off yesterday. Yes, and Mansell was very lucky to not be taken off by that ridiculous piece of driving by Alio, who didn't even look in his mirrors, he didn't even know Mansell was there, the man who crashes at every Grand Prix anyway. Because he's done himself great credit in this race to have lasted as far as he did, and quite honestly that must really put his career in very serious doubt because... Senna and Mansell, they have missed the pit entrance, and I'm very surprised that Senna hasn't come for tyres now. He's got Mansell all over him, he has no reason to stay out, I think the tactic should have been for Senna to go for tyres. It's going to be too late, wheel to wheel stuff, look at this, they're almost touching, Mansell gets in there, and Senna back on the inside. Millions of people will be sitting at home on a Sunday night watching the BBC, and there'll be someone missing, and that's a big empty hole, and it says something that he was able to make a second of a very successful career, and he was coming to stay with me for the British Grand Prix, and it'll be an empty house. And after 13 years of enthralling viewers with his wit and wisdom, James Hunt's absence will fill the worldwide followers of Formula One with sadness, just as his two fine young sons will grieve for the loss of a loving father, and Grand Prix paddocks will miss his jovial presence. Yes, James Hunt, he was different, wasn't he? Yes, watching that brings back some very pleasant memories and some very good times. Did you ever think it would work, the combination of your and... No, I didn't actually, Ken, because Jackie just said that we were opposites, and indeed we were, and James and I didn't get on very well for some time, and we both had pretty massive egos, and we used the same microphone, and whoever hadn't got the microphone thought he ought to have it, and we've had some pretty frenzied tussles in the commentary box, but eventually we got ourselves sorted out and knocked the rough corners off each other, grew to like each other, and he was a most endearing chap. He went through some very difficult times in his life, but you would never have known it towards the end of his life. He was having a very hard time financially, his marriage had broken up, he used to come in, cheerful, he used to cycle in from Wimbledon, his home, and do the job and then cycle home again. He said he hadn't got enough money to run a car, but he was above everything else a man with great dignity and a very, very real character, and I can tell you, I miss him. When I see you, Jackie, running around, you're as neat as a pin, always, and you drove your cars accordingly, and then I look at James, and James used to turn up like he'd just stepped out of the jungle somewhere. Exactly, but that was James, and that's the James we all liked and loved, and of course we disapproved from time to time, as I did particularly, when I thought it was damaging the sport and even himself. I thought it would help him if he changed in some way, but you know, you don't change a leopard's spots. You let the leopard get into the jungle and enjoy the jungle and do all the things that it wants to do. So I think we've lost a great character from motorsport, and James Hunt will be much loved by millions of people around the world who have enjoyed his commentary and his statements, and the combination of Murray and James will never be replaced. So I think we've seen the passing of an era, and we should just look back on it. I'm sure James would appreciate us doing that with a smile on our face, because that's how James lived his life. That's a lovely tribute too, by the way, Murray. Well, the race might be over. Many of you are still on the edge of their seats, eager to learn just who will win that brilliant Holden Calibra, valued at $42,000. Our computer has drawn a name at random from all those who phoned in over the weekend. The most popular choice was Christian Fittipaldi's Spectacular Summersault, and the winner is Barry Gregoire of Lismore Heights, New South Wales. Congratulations to you, Barry. You have a Holden Calibra on your way to your home at Lismore, and I'm just happy that you won it, and it wasn't Jackie Stewart. Well, well, I'm not so sure about that. I had four phones going here at once, and then I found out I couldn't enter. Hasn't bought a brand new car. Can you believe this? It's 1964. Yes, I can believe it, actually. Next year, a bit of crystal ball gazing. First of all, Murray, what do you see happening there? Well, I fear I see Ayrton Senna starting off into the distance in 16 races in the best car with the best driver at the wheel, but I remember that Ron Dennis has got the Peugeot engine for his McLaren team. He's got Mika Hakkonen, who's a very forceful driver. Damon Hill isn't going to be deferring to Ayrton Senna if he can possibly avoid it. Ferrari are coming good, and they've got two of the best chargers there are, Inge and Lecy and Gerhard Berger, and there are maybe all sorts of other things turning up. I remember that Sauber have got Mercedes pushing all the time in the background. So I am far from despondent, Ken. I think this time next year we're going to be looking back on another great Australian Grand Prix and another superb Formula One season. Jackie, you have a question mark over Damon Hill only because you haven't seen him without that wonderful suspension that Williams have got right now. I think the jury's still out. I am a great fan of Damon's, as I'm sure most viewers will recognise who have watched today. But I think going non-active suspension, non-traction control, and all the other things that are being taken off the cars and regulation for next year, I think Damon has to again establish himself, whereas the other drivers have had some previous experience with a car that's a little slipperier to drive and a little bit more complicated in some respect. But I think he'll do well. Schumacher, I wouldn't pull him out of the picture, and Ayrton Senna can be very powerful, but anybody can slip in a banana skin, and motor racing has got a lot of races before a championship is secured. Well, once again, thank you very much both for your company down here. It's always been a joy, and we look forward to your coming back next year in 1994. Thank you, Ken. Thank you, James. Real pleasure. Thank you, Murray. By the way, 97,000 people turned up here today to the Adelaide Grand Prix. That's 17,000 up on last year. Maybe we're just starting coming out of the trough. Who knows? We trust you've enjoyed this telecast of the Foster's Australian Formula One Grand Prix. Until next time, it's bye for now. Well, I'm Patrick Frost and I'd like to show you what life's like for an easy rider who travels in the fast lane with the STA Well, I know what you're thinking. Fast lane? Who am I kidding? Well, this may be a bus but believe me, this really is the fast lane. This is one of the STA's Transit Link buses. They're fast, frequent and only stop when they have to. Which isn't very often. The first Transit Link service began back in February 92 and was quickly followed by two more. Then another two. This is John. He's a Transit Liaison Officer. Officers like John travel the Transit Link routes helping passengers with any problems or questions they might have. Hi John. Hello Patrick. Tell me, how popular is the Transit Link service? Very popular. People love the fact that they can leave their cars behind, get into town just as quickly and they don't have to find a park when they get there. In fact, the new service has proven so successful that the STA are opening five new Transit Links this month. Two to Noor Lunga Centre Station, one to Woodcroft Community Centre, one to Aldgate and one to Elizabeth via Ingall Farm and Salisbury. New timetables are being handed out now. If you'd like more information about these new services, call the STA soon on 210 1000. It really is a great way to go. See you soon with more Easy Rider travel news from the STA. Thanks Dave. Tonight at 6.30, Britta Skarkin writes a fascinating special, Beauty and the Beasts. Then it's over to 60 Minutes followed by our movie premiere, Batman Returns. Mmm, delicious. You know that's my second favorite treat. Really? Yeah. Well, well, well. Two lovers are at it again. Rudy, get out. I don't have to. It's a free world and a free kitchen. Come on Theo, let her stay. Yeah Theo, can't you control yourself for one minute? All right, Rudy, you can stay. Just cool out. Okay. What's that I smell? We're making chocolate mousse. No, it's nothing mousse. I smell dad's cologne. Any left in the bottle? I think Theo smells very nice. Thank you Justine. Ow, he hit me. Stop tormenting your little sister. I'm not doing anything. Rudy, I have a big brother too and I know what a pain they can be. You said it. Need some help? I'd be delighted. Excuse us. Oh, come on you guys, I'm serious. Come on. Thank you. Yes we are. Can't believe this. Trying to be alone with my girlfriend. Look, I gotta put up with it. Justine and I trying to have a little bit of privacy. Rudy gonna come in and start messing up things. Justine and I never get to be alone because there are always people wherever we go. Dad, if we are in a subway car that's half full, that's the most alone we get. If you're looking for any sympathy from me, you're looking at the wrong person. You're looking at a man who has been alone approximately one and a half hours since 1963. Now if you want to be alone with Justine, I would suggest that you get a job, buy a house, get married and have no children. All I'm asking is to be alone with Justine for a little while. You want to be alone with Justine? Yeah. Okay, I'm gonna give this to you once. Your mother and I used to do this all the time. Go to a bad movie. Not just a bad movie, but a bad foreign movie with subtitles. Woohoo! Nobody in that theater, Jack. I mean a bad movie where there's, they have a lot of fog, you know, people walking around in the fog and the men cry. If you take it to that, you'll be alone and you'll find even the candy counter is self-service. Tonight, catch all the action. Oh, look out, anything can happen here. But it started a half hour ago. When's the next showing? Five hours from now. Justine, why can't we just send me a roommate out someplace? No, Delores broke her foot and her leg's in the cast. Justine! Hey, Delores! Looks like you're up and about. Going somewhere? No. I was supposed to work at the alumni reception today. They need a waitress to pay $75 plus tips. Do you want it? Oh, I can't. Theo and I are going out. Hey, Justine, go ahead if you want to. No problem. You don't mind? I could really use the money. Absolutely not. Thank you. Oh, see, now look at you two. That's how a couple should be. Understanding, flexible, and all over each other. I'll call you when I get home. Thank you. Thanks, Delores. See you later. So what were you two going to do? We're going to see a five and a half hour movie called the Death Sonata. Oh, Bjorn Lundstrom. He's my favorite director. The last two hours of the movie, the screen is black. And all you hear is water dripping. It's deep. Give it back. You think you can get away with that? Give me my chocolate. Do you hear me? Drop it now. Sometimes, if you just hold this button a little longer. There you go. Here you go. What did you do that for? Isn't this what you wanted? Chomping down calories is supposed to make me feel better? No, this makes me feel better. I only wish this was Randy Henley. Oh, I know Randy. He's a theater major, right? He is also my acting partner, with whom I'll be going down the tubes tomorrow in scene class because he can't rehearse. He had to work. Well, that's too bad. You're not a theater major, are you? No, why? I'd ask you to help me run lines. Run them where? Read them with me. Run through the scene. Well, I'm not doing anything now. Super. Let's do it. We'll have to share this script. Okay. I'm Joan of Arc. You're the third inquisitor. We'll start here. You want me to deny who I am, what I have been chosen to do. What I speak is the truth. It is all I have left, and if truth shall be my companion in the flames, so be it. Stop your lies, you foolish girl. I mean, hold on. I give you all of that, and you come back with, stop your lies, you foolish girl. Weren't you listening to me? Well, no. I was waiting for my part to come. You have to listen to me, and then feel what you're saying again. And if truth shall be my companion in the flames, so be it. Stop your lies. You foolish girl. You're useless, hopeless. You're wasting my time. I'm wasting your time? Look, I'm just trying to help you out. I didn't come ask you to run lines. You asked you to tell me what to do, and all of a sudden I do it, and it's wrong. See, now, that's perfect. What? See, you're frustrated. You're upset. Draw from that. I'll give you your cue. And if truth shall be my companion in the flames, so be it. Stop your lies. You foolish girl. Better, much better. Thank you. I am afraid. I'm afraid of the heat. I'm afraid of the fire. I'm afraid of screaming out. I'm afraid of being alone. Wow. You sound so real. That didn't sound anything like acting. Really? Yeah, it sounded like it was really happening. You know, the flame, the heat. It did? Yeah, I felt like, I don't know. Well, tell me, tell me. Like grabbing a fire extinguisher. Or grabbing you, saving you. You should have. I should have what? Grabbed me, touched me. I mean, if that's what you feel, you should go for it. I mean, that's what it's about. Acting on your instincts. Acting is your instincts. Well, maybe I should sign up for this course. I got a lot of instincts. You want to keep going? Yeah. Your line. You pretend to be more than human, but you aren't. No one is. I pretend to be nothing, but what I am. Am I to be punished for that? Your line. There's no more to be said. Theo! Justine! The The romance! Five Dirty Weeknights with Steve and Ann Marie. I'd walk across her plains, and I'd walk amongst her trees. I'd sit and watch the sunset. I'd catch a gentle breeze. This mighty southern land is where I want to be. This is my country. This is my land. And it may take a little time to understand. I'd cross mountains, I'd cross valleys. I'd cross her deep blue seas. I'd walk across her plains, and I'd walk amongst her trees. This mighty southern land is where I want to be. Justine, it's me, Theo. Listen, please, don't hang up. Just tell him! Who does he think he is? Vanessa, would you please keep it down? I need some peace and quiet right now. I will not keep it down. Do you have any idea what happened to me today? I stayed late at school because I had a science club meeting, so when I left I took a shortcut home. And right there on Flatbush Avenue in front of everybody, sitting on a bench with his arm around Kyler Stevens, was my boyfriend. Excuse me, ex-boyfriend, Jeremy the Rat-Nose Wilson. Was? So I went up to him, and I said, what are you doing? And he just looked at me and said, well, I was just sitting here with my arm in the bench, and she sat down next to me. Can you believe that? Right there in public, with his hands all over some other girl. Would you do that to someone that you cared about? Why would he do that, Theo? Why? I don't know, Vanessa. But just because he had his arm around another girl doesn't mean he doesn't care about you. You should give him another chance. That is the same kind of garbage he was trying to lay on me. What is it with you guys? Do you all read from the same book? A bull? Jeremy is history. Do you know the sacrifices I made for this guy? Well, what if he came to you and he confessed that he made a terrible, terrible mistake? I'd show him the door. Okay. What if he said he was really, really sorry, and you saw he was in a whole lot of pain? If I see him again, he will know what pain is. Big paper do, huh? Hey, Dad. I decided to come down here so Mom wouldn't hear the typing. That's the kind of thing I love to see my son burning the midnight oil, Jack. I'm writing a poem to Justine. Oh. Oh, man. Hey, Dad. I messed up. What did you do to her? Justine saw me kind of kissing another girl in her dormitory lounge. It wasn't a real kiss. It was an accident. One of those things that just happened. You were kind of kissing? Yeah, but it was an accident. You're talking to me. There was this theater major named Miss Jade, and she was over by the candy machine. Is that when you tripped and your lips fell on her face? See, one minute I'm helping her rehearse the play, Joan of Arc. Next thing I know, we're kissing. And that's when Justine walked in. That reminds me of a story. Oh, boy. That reminds me of a story. When I was dating your mother, and we were going very, very steady. And there were some neighbors. I had a job, and I would walk their dogs. And I had this one dog. His name was Abe. A little dog. Had a beard. And he called him Abe. And a squirrel came by. Boom! Abe takes off. Leash comes out of my hand. I chase Abe. Abe's chasing this girl through the bushes, up in the trees, all around. I'm going through the bushes. Abe, Abe come back. I lost Abe. I walked through the park looking for Abe. Couldn't find Abe. It started to get dark. I'm getting a little scared. So I came on back home very, very depressed. And on the porch, almost smiling, was Abe. What in the world does that have to do with me? I didn't lose my dog. I lost my woman. Which brings me to the point that had I not found Abe, your mother would have been upset with me because your mother loved to play with Abe. Thanks, Dad. I'm going to go back to my poem. See, I don't think that you want to write poems. Poems is not the way you're going to get your woman back. What you need to do now is go to the next level if you want Justine back. What's that? Begging. You need to do some serious begging. And I mean, other than the begging you've been doing where you say, Justine, I'm sorry. And Justine, well, it wasn't me that you saw, you know, that kind of thing. You need to do some serious get down underneath. Please, please, please. Then you can go to the next level, which is just a second. I'll show you what I mean. This is the ultimate level. This one. There you go. Now, pay attention to what I'm saying. All right? This is the level you want. That's what you want. The blues begging level, my son. Now, listen to me. Justine, Justine. Listen to me. You're a dog. You're under the house. It's 22 below zero. The wind is blowing fierce. You're freezing and you're cold and the only person who can open that door for you is Justine. Justine, Justine. Now, we got to just you. You got to call. You got to call. You got to hit that big note. Get inside now. Come on now. There you go. Justine, Justine. Let me hear it. Justine, Justine. You're sorry. You're sorry. Don't believe what you see. Justine, Justine. Oh baby, I'm sorry. In National 9 News at 6, a Sunday train trip ends in drama. Four men are rushed to hospital with burns after an accident on board the Steam Ranger. I'm not interested. Then can I read it to you? We have to go. What's a hug to someone who's alone? What's a call that doesn't reach the phone? What's a mystery book without a plot? No, no, I can't get involved in this deal. Look at the pain I'm in. Now, if you could just get her to give me one minute alone, that's all I ask. Please help me. Please. Don't have to beg for you two. No, no, don't be doing that for me. I'll ask her. Okay, thanks. Well, what did she say? She says to get rid of you and that she doesn't want to see you anymore and that it's over. No. You gotta go back and talk to her. I'm in pain. Can't you see that I'm in pain? You're the one in pain? I'm the one in pain. I'm the one with the bad foot. Look, I'm out of here. Hi there. Hi. Well, how'd things go with Justine? Not too well. Listen, I want you to know that what happened between me and you didn't mean anything. You think it meant something to me? You kissed me. You mean that didn't mean anything? That's acting. Well, it's over. Whatever you say. Listen, I'm late for class. I gotta go. Yeah, bye, Jade. Bye, Leah. Bye. The Cosby Show was taped before a studio audience. While the touring cars prove they can be just as exciting. And drama as poor people are injured on board the Steam Ranger. Good evening, those stories in a moment, but first a fire has been raging out of control in a warehouse just metres from the Grand Prix Circuit in the city's crowded east end. Emergency services have been hampered by thousands of race fans who choked nearby streets for a view of the drama. Just when you might have thought things couldn't get much hotter in Grand Prix City, a towering inferno fled out of control just metres from the racetrack. It broke out soon after the chequered flag had dropped and as tens of thousands of spectators were heading into the east end to continue the party. A security guard next door at Eyre's house first noticed flames coming from the area, which has become a well known haunt for street kids. The fire quickly took hold of the disused warehouse, which has been earmarked for demolition. The first problem was to evacuate the adjoining East Terrace and Rundle Road pubs, which were by now full to overflowing with Grand Prix fans. The next problem was getting them to leave the area altogether so emergency services could get in and tackle the flames. A short time ago it was brought under control, but firefighters now fear that the warehouse walls will collapse onto neighbouring properties. So far there have been no reports of any injuries. Peter Lewis, National 9 News. And we'll have more on that story later in the evening. Well before that fire began, Ayrton Senna blitzed the Formula One field to win his second Australian Grand Prix. Alain Prost held on for second ahead of team-mate Damon Hill. Here's Rob Colvin live at the track. Thanks Georgie, and what an emotional day it's been. Senna in his last drive for McLaren put on an exhibition. He crossed the line nine seconds ahead of Alain Prost. The Frenchman in the final race of his incredible career was always in Senna's wake. The Williams cars have dominated the season, but today Senna made it two wins in a row for the reborn McLaren team. Pole-sitter Ayrton Senna arrived for work under grey skies. Morning practice saw a few spots of rain. A wet race would suit no-one except Senna. On the day of his McLaren swan song he was working up good relations with his new team Williams. The man Senna slugged in Japan, Eddie Irvine, nearly made another enemy during practice. And by race time nerves were on edge. And they are holding the grid. Okiyo Katayama had stalled on the grid. The delay allowed Martin Brundle, who'd missed the start of the warm-up lap, to be pushed up from 24th to 8th. After a second parade lap, Eddie Irvine lined up too far forward. Perhaps Ayrton Senna could give him some advice on it. And Ken Tyrrell gave some loud advice, telling officials that his driver Katayama should not have been shunted to the rear of the grid. Then an unprecedented third warm-up lap, leaving only 79 to race. It is action in Australia. A clean start for the frontrunners, but Pedro Lamy was a first corner casualty. Over our curb cab, that's what happened last year. Even as Senna led Prost, Hill and Schumacher into the second lap, Lamy's Lotus was still an obstacle. And they've got to move that car. Then Irvine went cross-country and whacked the tyre.
