Sound and the ability to communicate make our lives meaningful. Yet imagine living in a world where you are not able to participate. Hearing and speech disorders, the number one disabling condition in the country, affect some 24 million Americans. Often called invisible disabilities, they're commonly seen in our daily lives. As director of the New York Institute for Special Education, I'm asking you to seek out help if you suspect a hearing or speech problem. Don't live in a world of isolation. Sound and the ability to communicate make our lives meaningful.
