Good evening and welcome to this coverage of a full replay of the 1989 drama filled Australian Grand Prix. We're going to pick up the action after the restart when Alan Prost decided he didn't want to continue in the rain. They stopped the race after around about two laps. There was a lot of drama in between time, but finally the race did go ahead. We pick up the commentary with Murray Walker and James Hunt. The green and Martini's made a flyout. Martini comes up alongside Ayrton Senna. Senna's got the inside line for the left and right and the S's. This is where Martini nearly lost it on the original start. He does not do so this time. Nannini nearly does in third position. It is Bootson in fourth position as they go through the wall of spray. And Senna has already got a lead. Look at it as we look down from the helicopter as they go round East Terrace Bend and up towards Flinders. It is Senna leading Martini second. It is Nannini in third position. Bootson is in fourth place. Patrese in the other Williams is in fifth position. And Senna is sprinting away, meaning to control the race from the front. But the danger in this race for Ayrton Senna and everybody else is going to be lapping. When they come up to pass people in these conditions, it's going to be very dangerous. And if you look back behind Senna's car, if we look at it from the front and you try and see through the wall of spray, you can't see anything. And that is the reverse of the view that the following drivers have. As they follow Senna, they can see absolutely nothing through that wall of spray. They can't see his car. And there's a battle now for second place. Martini moving over to defend the corner as Bootson has a look. But goes discretion being the better part of Valla for the moment. Now Martini's on wet weather Pirelli tyres. Bootson and Patrese behind him are on Goudier. The Pirelli is alleged not to be so good as the Goudier in the wet, in which case Martini will be holding up Bootson and Patrese and letting Senna get away. And Senna has just gone through and I think there's going to be an enormous, there is going to be an enormous gap at the end of the first lap. Martini second, Bootson third, Patrese fourth. Manini is in fifth position. Another long gap in six places to Cesaris. Seventh is Nigel Mansell. Eighth is Caffey. Ninth is Modena. Tenth is Bruntle. Eleventh is Boerig. In twelfth position is Piquet. And they are tiptoeing gingerly down the straight as Martini holds off. Bootson who is attacking for second place and Manini is closing up on Patrese. Yes, and I think at this stage of the race, Martini is a bit naughty to be defending the insides of these corners as he is and working on the blocking because it's not a situation that he's going to be able to sustain for very long. It would appear that he's got a significant amount less grip than the Goodyear Shod cars behind him and they're all falling over each other trying to get by. And meanwhile Senna has just disappeared into the distance ahead. Indeed he has and Martini is going to have to give way to the pressure. But there is the order with Senna literally out of sight. Martini is second, Bootson is third, Patrese moving to the right down Fravem Street as they come up to racetrack hairpin, which is where Bootson tried to challenge before. And now they're punching right up. And it's because Martini is holding them up. Manini is in fifth position. Patrese challenging Bootson for third. Well, it's a great race for second place. But at the end of the first lap, Ayrton Senna was nearly nine seconds ahead of everybody else. He is going to cakewalk this race if he just keeps going. And knowing Senna in this weather, he's a master in the wet. He will keep going. Over the line, coming up to complete Senna's second lap. Martini wipes his visor. Bootson attacks on the inside and he's going through, is he? No. Martini shuts the door. The two Williams-Renos, which they have worked on the handling of, very, very carefully in the period between the Japanese Grand Prix and here, and are vastly improved, are up into third and fourth places. Alessandro Nanini, who crashed at the beginning of the race last year, is fourth, fifth, I'm sorry. And now Bootson goes for it. And once again, Martini moves across. That's my line, he says, and I'm keeping it. And Bootson just hadn't got the grunt with the V10 Renault engine to get past the Ford DF-R V8-powered car of... Now he has, now he has. Bootson goes up to second. But the gap between himself and Ayrton Senna in the lead as Martini attacks again in third position now. And, of course, Martini is now getting the spray and Patrese is going through. Martini's getting the treatment that he had been giving Bootson and succumbs to it. Bootson second, Williams-Reno. Patrese third, Williams-Reno. Martini fourth in the Minardi. Nanini in the background in fifth position. In sixth place, it's Di Cesaris still, but there's a long gap. Mansell is attacking Di Cesaris for sixth place, as you will see in the moment. And the Australian Grand Prix has only just begun. There are still nearly two hours of it to go. Now, Thierry Bootson won the Canadian Grand Prix, which was one of the other two wet races we had this year. Bootson won in Canada. And the other wet one, of course, even worse than today, was the Belgian Grand Prix, which Senna won. And there's 23 seconds now between Senna and Bootson, who is second. This, of course, is now a very comfortable situation for Senna. I think that as the two Williams cars have got past Martini, one would expect to see them speed up, but Senna really should be able to drive very cautiously now, knowing that he has an enormous lead. He will have heard that on the radio. And an enormous lead for Ayrton Senna. Yes, Senna even now can afford to take it easy and go for his seventh Grand Prix win of 1989. And I remind everybody who's watching that, whilst Alain Prost has been declared world champion of 1899, following the rejection of McLaren's appeal in Paris this week... If Senna wins today and McLaren's appeal is successful, that could put things in doubt again. That's Arnoux taking any cheever and losing it. Well, René Arnoux, last Grand Prix ever, and he's beat it, he's beat it. He's got the car stuck on the kerb, the rear wheels are off the ground, there is no drive. And I don't think we'll be seeing him again. Ayrton Senna. Here's a replay and you see Arnoux going very wide. Yes, a cheever appeared to give him a bit of a nudge with his front wheel then. He just pushed Arnoux's rear wheel, spun him round, and he's got stuck on the kerb. He can't remember a very, very low, there's very little suspension movement. So any love problem at all, but something is there it stays. If it's possible for anybody to revel in these conditions, here is the man that will be doing so. Because Senna, who has been under an enormous amount of pressure for the last two weeks as any cheever comes through in the Arrows, Senna is under an enormous amount of pressure, is leaning from the front and demonstrating his superiority and weather expertise. We're with Martin Brabham's, Martin Bruntles Brabham now. We've got a rearward-facing camera on it, and this gives you an absolutely magnificent impression of what a draw-free car is like at speed. And you can hear as the engine revs, suddenly jump up, you hear the wheels spin there, because these cars have got so much power that they can comfortably spin their wheels at 150 miles an hour. Now, it is incidentally the left-leaning cheever. You're looking at cheever. He's actually got a forward-facing camera on his car, but the conditions are so appalling that I imagine he's not getting any picture from it. Not that he'll care too much about that. And the backward-facing camera is on Martin Bruntles' car. We're with Derek Warwick now. It's the two Arrows cars that have got the cameras. Cheever is in 12th position, and Derek Warwick is well down the field. You can hear his engine listen. So, race order on this, the fifth lap out of what are supposed to be 81, but I don't think will be. Ayrton Senna now leading by 24 seconds, and here's Jerry Bootson as Alessi comes out of the pits. What National Mutual did to help John Hayes maintain his lifestyle when he retired, National Mutual can do for you. National Mutual, for the most important person in the world. Looking out of our window here, Barry, I see if anything, the rain is coming down a little bit harder. It's a steady drizzle that's been all day, but this is an extremely heavy steady drizzle that we're getting now. And in fact, looking across at the hills, beyond the circuit, it looks even worse. It looks more closed in than any time earlier today. You've just seen Freddie Arnoux close to the side of the circuit. He's going to be one of many, many retirements today. This course is difficult enough to finish on when the weather is good. In 1985, the first time, as in Warcher and Sennalini, that the Australian Grand Prix was held, eight people finished. In 1986, 10 people. In 1987, it was nine people, and last year, only 11. Out of the 26 who started. And that, as I say, was in very good conditions. Today, the water is bound to get into some of the cars. Drivers are bound to go off in these slippery conditions. I would be quite surprised, actually, if all six people finished to score World Championship points. Looking back down the field, I see JJ Leto making very good progress through the field. He was started 17th on the grid, was around 17th in the last couple of laps, and has now moved up into 14th place. The talented young Finn driving the Honest car. Having a chance today to show his talent in the most extremely difficult conditions. And, heads-off, incidentally, to the two Williams drivers, because although the... And off goes Alessi! Water skein across the infield as he's gone past the Adelaide Racecourse entrance, Victoria Park Racecourse entrance. He slid onto the grass. That's where Frost went off this morning in the wet weather practice. And it's another indication of how poorly the conditions are. I was saying, heads-off to the two Williams drivers. They're in second and third places. Now, 29 seconds behind Senna. They finish second and third in Japan with Patrese in front, and it's Bootson in front this time. Fourth is Nanini. Vansal is up into fifth place, and sixth is Martini. There's the replay of Jean Alessi, who rejoined after going into the pit lane. And you saw that he had to have his car pushed through. His car pushed over the curving. But of course, these big tyres with an enormous contact area, even the grooved ones, which are wet weather tyres, resist not at all when you hit deep water. Ayrton Senna is now on his eighth lap. That is one-tenth distance of the planned race, 81 laps. And still, Bootson and Senna are already just going through 30 seconds behind. Yes, Senna, I think, has eased his pace a little bit. His last lap was a couple of seconds slower than the previous. And still, he's edging away rather than taking... Oh, and contact there. It's Gerhard Berger that's made the contact hitting Billy Balliot in the Lola Lamborghini. So it looks as though Berger's raced just as last year, because you remember that last year, there is Alio's car being pushed away. Berger's car is empty. The Austrian is fed up. He didn't want to start this race anyway. Here's the replay. Alio turns in, clips the nose of Berger's Ferrari, takes off the front aero foils, and that's it. There's no point in Berger even trying to go on. He would have had to go into the pits and get a new nose, and he's fed up. Particularly as with the delay to the race, he's now missed the flight that he caught last year by getting out of the race hurry. He's come out of the race hurry, but the race started a bit late. Last year, he was taken out at Racetrack Hairpin by Rudi Arnoux, who has already retired this year. And on lap eight of the 81 lap, hopefully Australian Grand Prix, Senna leads Bootsen by 29 seconds. There is Riccardo Petrezzi. You can see what the gap is between third and second. Thierry Bootsen, to the extent that he is able to take his thinking away from controlling the car, which won't be very much, may be saying to himself, this is a recap of the Canadian Grand Prix. Senna was leading me and went out. I am second, and I won in Canada. And I have a feeling that Petrezzi is getting very anxious to pass his teammate Bootsen. Petrezzi beginning to look for a way by, and of course with the visibility, the spray, and the poor visibility, overtaking in equally matched cars really is very different indeed. Now Senna has definitely eased his pace. He's lapping some four seconds slower than his quickest lap of the race so far, and in fact Bootsen has caught him a little bit. Gap now down to 27 seconds. There's a spin up, and it's one of the arrows. Let's see the... it's Derek Warwick. Derek Warwick's out now. So we now have Berger out, we have Arnoux out, we have Derek Warwick out, and you can see there the on-car camera. That's what happened to Derek Warwick. The wheel is off. He did the same thing in practice in the drive. And you may have noticed then how difficult it was to see through that on-board camera, and I'm afraid to have to tell you that the drivers had no better view than that, and that is one of these problems. Here we see now the Tracy, definitely starting to look for a way past, and he's got this problem of the spray. Eddie Cheever will be solved on the outside there. We're now watching him get on board his car. And the problems come really when he's following another car. He's not close behind anybody else at the moment, but you see how long the spray hangs in the air. And now the spray from the car in front. Ayrton Senna has gone through, and there is Emanuele Pirro all around the circuit. Cars are spinning out of contention, and Pirro has just done exactly that. Now, here we are with the on-car arrows camera on Eddie Cheever and on lap 10 in this 80-lap race. Ayrton Senna leads Thierry Bootson by 27 seconds. Here is a replay of Pirro spinning off in the men's off course. Third is Patrese, challenging Bootson after, as you have seen. Fourth is Alessandro Nanini, who is eight seconds behind Patrese, and seven seconds ahead of Nigel Mansell, who is in fifth position. And Pier Luigi Martini in the Minardi is in sixth position. Seventh is Di Cesaris, eighth is Cathy. Ayrton Senna is in a class of his own here today. As James has said, he has slowed down, actually, and he still...there's the gap. Yes, and he's getting all the information he needs for Bootson, because he is now quite clearly matching his pace to the two Williams cars behind him. He may find that as and when Patrese manages to scrabble past Bootson, he might have to up his pace a little bit, but I'm sure he's got an awful lot in hand. And Patrese having a go, and Patrese had to really scramble it, but he is past. So Riccardo Patrese moves up into second place. Yes, Riccardo Patrese, who already this season in an incredible season as a spinner, and that is Nigel Mansell. Now, there was some confusion earlier on about whether Mansell or Berger had gone out, and of course it was Berger. Mansell did there what Senna did in the wet weather practice this morning, spun through 360 degrees. Here it is again, and watch him miraculously catch it in exactly the same place that it happened to Ayrton Senna, in exactly the same way. In fact, if you could have superimposed the pictures of the McLaren on the Ferrari there, you would have had a mirror image. That would have been a multicoloured one. And there's Patrese. I am a very angry man with a lot of power Now where is he? Vinny is fighting to hold onto reality Get into the video A stunning wise guy guest starring Ray Sharkey Who entered? Tuesday, 9.30 on Nine So it's Senna And then the two Williams Then Nanini in fourth position Nigel Mansell trying very hard He had actually reduced the gap between himself And Nanini in fourth place He didn't lose a place because of that spin We're looking back now Oh, we were looking back And there's Patrese, he's lost it Bootson is going to go through back into second place Yes, I think that was a replay Because we saw Bootson back in second place just a moment ago So the two Williams cars having a tremendous battle And there is JJ Leto who's been making good progress Through the field so far Following achievements Following I tell you live Rundle's travel course We see the rear-ward facing camera And Senna looks as if he's just driving away from some sort of drama Yes, there's drama all around the circuit Martin Brundle's camera looking back And Leto will probably see something from that soon And Martin Brundle that you see there is in tenth position Leto has worked his way up to the left And there's Senna, Senna's spinning Spin, spin, spin, round, round, round he goes now Has he kept his cool? And he's got enough of a gap between himself and the second place man To stay in the lead But if that happens to Ayrton Senna It can happen to anybody and almost certainly will Bootson in second place, Petrezzi third There's the replay Just watch the way Ayrton just cool and calmly looks to the right Looks to the left 27 seconds between himself and the second place man And here he Bootson, so Senna is safe Yes, and he lost an amazingly small amount of time on that Only four seconds of his lead went away And further back down the field Leto will be very, very keen to get past Martin Brundle Brundle, remember of course, is on the Pirelli tyres Which is quite clear from the lap times Not providing the level of grip Senna's right back in the groove now Just what difficulty even the outstandingly talented Senna is having at keeping his car on the island It really is fantastic And the rain is still, as I told you a few minutes ago The rain is coming down harder and it is still persisting The rain is now and has been for the last 10 minutes or so Harder than any other time during the day And the weather really looks set Ayrton Senna swimming his way through the spray Well, he certainly found his limits on that corner And he won't be trying that one quite as quick again But he's leading by a country mile, metaphorically speaking It was 27 seconds, let's see what it is now As Bootson goes through in second place Followed by Riccardo Petrezzi Ayrton Senna is leading by 24 seconds Bootson is actually lapping 2.5 seconds faster at the present moment When Senna, on Senna's lap, following his spin Petrezzi is slower than Bootson And Nanini is now just 5 seconds ahead of Mansell who is in fifth position And there's Di Cesaris, you see they're all going off in the same place And that's where they went off this morning That's on the right hander between Jones Street, Runwell Road And you see the wheel spin as Senna, as Di Cesaris, feeds in the power And boils the water between the tread of his tyre and the surface of the road And it's a fourth gear, 110mph right hander in dry conditions That they're going off on And you see they hit that curb The marshals taking a very interested view of the proceedings And Di Cesaris was only just missed by the yellow Minardi Of Pierre-Louise Martini who is now in sixth position Because he has been passed by Nigel Mansell long since And Petrezzi is back with Pierre-Yves Bootson This is the battle in the Australian Grand Prix, it's for second place 24.6 seconds between race leader, ex-World Champion Ayrton Senna and this Formula 1, all three drivers are paying a great deal of money Nigel Mansell is alleged to have some £4m a year income So is Senna, so is Prost They earn it in my opinion when the conditions are good But when the conditions are like this, literally indescribable For their horrific nature, they certainly earn every penny of it That's Capelli who is about to be lapped by Bootson Petrezzi once again starts to depress Bootson He appears to be capable of lapping Prost at the Bootson But he panics when he got past him before He's had several laps to find a way by And then within half a lap he'd thrown it away And Bootson was back through again Senna has got to start all over again And that looks like De Cesar is at it again at the same corner Martin Brundle in major trouble, no rear wing, he's gone off somewhere Senna is only got three wheels, my goodness Senna is out of the Australian Grand Prix We are going to have a new race leader And as in Canada it is going to be Thierry Bootson followed by Petrezzi He may do a wheel-nerve and try and drive the rest of the race on three wheels And he's got the tummy on the kerb yet again Well this is the sensational development that finally rivets The World Championship because there was possibly going to be Well there was going to be contention if Senna had won this race But even Ayrton Senna, if he comes in as he did in Japan Where he had a new nose cone put on There is no way they're going to put a new left front suspension on the McLaren And that means to say that Alain Prost is probably feeling pretty happy And perhaps a touch smug in the pit And we are speculating here that he may have made contact And there is Caffey, Alex Caffey having a little reversing practice there He won't want to practice that too often And his team mate, De Cesaris, stuck on the kerb So we speculate that maybe there was contact between Senna and Brundle Because Brundle was without a rear wing We didn't see what happened, maybe we were going to replay in a moment But we don't know very much We're out of one corner and the McLaren team could put one on but not quickly enough And here is the new race leader and we have a race in Australia Except that Patrese had a spin on that last lap He's lost ten seconds to Brundsen But so long as he's got going again without damage I suspect that Patrese will catch that Very quickly Caffey walked away Looks like he's got a bit of a bump but he's on two legs So as you look at race leader Thierry Budsen on lap 15 of the Australia Crawl 3 He is leading Riccardo Patrese, his team mate, by ten seconds Alessandro Nannini is in third place Nigel Mansell is fourth Here Luigi Martini is fifth And Edi Ciba is in sixth place And as you saw again, Andrea de Cesare has once again beat the Dallara And I have a feeling that he's not going to be in the race much longer I also have a feeling that the stewards will be meeting And trying to decide whether or not they are sensible to continue the Australia Crawl 3 Thus far nobody with the possible exception of Caffey has been hurt But things could get worse What I'm sure the stewards will be doing is hoping that they can reach one third distance in the race Because if they can get it past that they can stop it and declare a half points result if the conditions don't improve They'll stop it and wait to see if the conditions improve If they don't then they can at least call the race a result And I'm sure they'll be trying to do that But certainly they must be watching the conditions because basically it's like a lottery out there Whether you can keep it on the island or not And if Senna, who after all had a very comfortable lead and had only to keep the car on the island And progressed without any undue hurry And if he couldn't do that when that was his only real challenge A man of his ability then really the conditions one would have to say are silly And I'm mighty glad that I'm not having to drive in this Some We really have got a race now Ayrton Senna outs, the World Championship revolve Resolved without contradiction But with contention and that will continue Bootson leading on lap 17 And we think this race, if it goes its full length Will only go 70 laps for the full two hours Bootson leading Nanini by eight seconds Nanini lapping faster than Bootson There is the Italian crossing the line And Mansell in third position The gap between Nanini and Bootson is down to under six seconds And Nanini is continuing to lapse up one and a half seconds faster The Rory Fern design, the Benetton is a very nimble car With an extremely great chassis Nanini coming up to lap Olivier Grisard The Frenchman in the luge, is he going to give him room to get through? But now we have, there is Pirro, Pirro and Bootson is catching him Yes and Bootson is trying to lap Immanuel Pirro And he won't be thanking him for holding him up at the moment Because he knows that Pirro will probably have been informed on his radio That he can just help a bit by holding up And that's Mansell who just seemed to come flying across there Maybe he knocked his brakes or lost control under braking But that body language just sums it up completely Yes I read it in a slide in Cromwell when I said he wants a push He was obviously furious and frustrated because he was going jolly well But this is Pirro in the Benetton, don't get confused Pirro is well down the field and is being caught and passed by the Williams And Bootson has been, Pirro has managed to hold him up Because Nenini is now only two and a half seconds behind Bootson And Bootson lost a lot of time as Grian done just a little bit more spinnary Elegant dancing there, whoops oh dear, muddy tires don't help of course But Nenini and still Bootson can't find a way past Yes Pirro may know of course by radio from his tits that Nenini who is bearing down on Bootson I wouldn't accuse him of deliberately holding him up but he's certainly doing so As we see a replay of Grian spinning and I noticed when we saw that previous shot That Nenini is now within sight of Bootson as going through to take Pirro Who cuts him off at racetrack hairpin and Nenini is now, there he is in the background Look for the other green Benetton, that's it And the gap I think, it says 2.6 seconds there But soon Alessandro Nenini the Italian Charger is going to be up there With the multi colored Williams and its Renault engine Nenini second for Tracy is up in the third position, Cheever is fourth, Nakajima is fifth And Leto is in sixth position Yes and Leso and Nakajima, Nakajima having a tremendous race into fifth place They have been battling for a long time now on the circuit, they come through the field together And in fact the swap places were a couple of times, Nakajima still ahead But Leto is still hounding him as Bootson finally finds a way by But Pirro's job for the team is very much done, a lot of a fist wave for Bootson And presumably Pirro will be pulled by Radio and will get straight out of the way And let his teammate by as he does And Bootson an understandably rather aggravated person at the moment But it's a long race, a long way to go And I don't think the loss of five seconds on the circuit That Pirro Gawson is going to be very important at the end of the day So there's the gap, there's the battle And we are on lap 20 in what we expect to be a 70 lap race from the originally intended 81 And Alessandro Nannini has got the problem now of pushing through the wall of spray Modena is in his way in the Brabham Janda as Bootson goes around that right hander And everybody is going off at that same corner between Jones Street which is frontal road in Tandemane And de Cantabelle Terrace, it's a very fast right hander and they're just misjudging it And that is a comment and not a criticism I hasten to say Thierry Bootson, the Belgian, one world three victory to his credit so far And that was in Canada this year Now the gap was 1.4 seconds And it is now 2.5 seconds but this time it's Nannini there And Nannini is laughing slower than Bootson who has got the message This is his 105th Grand Prix so he knows what it's all about Team mate Patrese, Williams are really coming good Third position on this lap, Eddie Cheever driving in his last race for Arrows in fourth position Nakajima in his last race for Lotus in fifth position And the quite incredible youngest driver in the race, 23 year old JJ Leto The ex British Formula 3 champion is in sixth position in the points for Onyx And Michael the Onyx boss will be delighted with that because it will help them to avoid pre-qualification next year So far their only world championship points have been scored by Stefan Johansson And later is in the points The Freda Blanger and she's there as your best friend If he died because he was trying to do his job Tuesday 8.30 I can't live with that Murder she wrote online Oh hello Parsons, I'd like to expose to you one of my best kept secrets, men Direct from surface paradise comes Manpower Australia The all Australian male dance review that's taking the country by storm So if you're celebrating absolutely anything or you simply want an outrageous girls night out Come and see the boys from Manpower Australia It'll be a night you won't forget Book at Bass or at these venues We all want to own the best home we can ANZ will lend money for land or a home And money to improve or extend when the time comes All at the current home loan interest rate Even if you're not an ANZ customer Whether it's your first home or you're after bigger and better things An ANZ home loan will help you get there Short skirts are back Are they? Light, crisp, special K Low in fat, high in protein With no cholesterol See you honey Bye darling The well balanced breakfast that keeps you in shape When did you get that? I bought it yesterday By the way, I think your cup's full Special K keeps you looking good Martin Vinnickham, medal winner for Australia His energy source, Luca's aid Bootsen leads Nanini second for Tracy third Di Manuele's caro has dropped right back now Having either done his job deliberately or inadvertently And that is to delay things for Thierry Bootsen So that Nanini could close the gap And yellow flags now, there's a lot of debris on the circuits Oh dear, that's a replay I think of what has happened And Cheever having a... Oh sorry It's Piquet and the Osella of Pierre-Carlo Ginzani Nelson Piquet, the world champion of free times Has a colossal comeback And he's the only one left The world champion of free times has a colossal coming together with Ginzani And that is yet another two more of them So that's one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine that I know about Who are out of the Australian Grand Prix There's probably one or two more dotted round the circuit Here's the replay, Ginzani And thump into the back of him and up his car goes Piquet Yes, and that you see Piquet couldn't see him He was braking a little bit earlier than Piquet expected You can only see a wall of spray And that's clearly... And you see the wheels still on the track there Debris, very dangerously placed Massive waving of yellow flags There's Nannini, the leaders, ticking their way through the debris then Before all that excitement, incidentally, the rain has eased very, very slightly And Putson and Nannini are speeding up at the front Just on lap 21, they both put in their personal fastest laps of the race And whether that has meant the circuit's just eased slightly in its treachery We don't know But Nakajima, who you may recall and criticise many times in the past Is, I have to say, driving a tremendous race this time Nakajima in fifth place, is lapping as quickly as anybody on the circuit And he's kept it on the island, which is no mean feat for anybody in these conditions And JJ Leto, right behind him, and the two of them Driving terrific races and having a terrific back-end Only about five seconds separates any Chiba that we're riding with now Nakajima and Leto, who are in fourth, fifth and sixth positions In fact, if Chiba had a backward-facing camera on his car You would see the yellow Lotus Judd of Satoru Nakajima Driving it for the last time You might even see JJ Leto's Onix as well But any Chiba's got a battle on his hands Nakajima's had a really grisly season He hasn't scored a single point And he needs to have one in this race And Putson is really spotting to the pressure from Nannini He's just put up another fastest lap for himself And he's now pulled his lead out to nearly five seconds on Nannini Betrays him quite a while away Away away some 24 seconds behind Nannini in third place And that's about as much as the driving speed And now Chiba breaking down with a fixed hairpin Very slow corner All the grip That was the Senna-Brungel crash You see there the replay The backwards-facing camera from Martin Brungel's car Saw the McLaren bearing down on it like jaws And then suddenly the two made contact And out went Ayrton Senna, the world champion of 1988 Here is the battle between Eddie Chiba in fourth place And Satoru Nakajima, Chiba in the Arrows He's just had one third place this year, Eddie Chiba And he's had an enormous number of retirements It's his last race for Arrows Before joining the Jaguar World Championship sports car team next year And before the race his team boss Jackie Oliver was confident of a good result Both him and Derek Warwick with their experience in the conditions to drive defensively Well, defensively wasn't good enough to keep Derek Warwick out of trouble He's out already but Chiba holding down well But under pressure now from Nakajima and JJ Leto sitting behind them covering the pair of them As you watch Chiba going to the corner There is the race leader Thierry Bootson The race order is Bootson leading Horses are one and a half seconds ahead of Danny Patrese He is third, this is lap 24 There's Bootson He's got his rhythm of course He will know what the limits of the car are on this circuit He's a sensible chap, he's a quiet, slightly introverted individual He really goes for it when he's in a motor car And this year after driving for Benetton and getting a lot of third places last year He's going well, there is Nanini, second in the background Fourth position is Chiba as you know Fifth position is Nakajima who is now three seconds behind the American Leto is, sorry, Leto is three seconds behind Nakajima who is right with Chiba So there's three seconds separating fourth, fifth and sixth As down to the hairpin again comes the Benetton Tucks in tight, gets the apex And Thierry Bootson goes through to complete the lap And now Nanini, it's 4.3 seconds So Alessandro Nanini is dropping back He may of course be trying to gather himself to attack in these conditions As the sparks strike up it's very, very difficult for a driver to build the necessary mental attack To come back again, Chiba and Nakajima going through So Satoru Nakajima driving a fighting race here in Australia The last time for Lotus up into fourth position Past the American Eddie Chiba Yes without any doubt this is Nakajima's best world three yet He must be really enjoying himself and that's a more excellent griot I think Indeed it is and another one out of the race to join his teammate René Arnoux And incur the wrath yet again of Guy Ligier who had fired the Frenchman anyway before this race And now surely they will have to stop the race Because if ever I saw a car in a position of danger, that's it They'll be coming round that bend not knowing that Griot's Ligier is lying stricken in the middle of the circuit Bootson avoids it, will the others? There won't be one of course it is but they will know that it's probably because the marshals who are very good here Will be violently waving the yellow flags and they do get plenty of warning And you can see the red coming down on the track there ahead of Bootson's car And really the weather's still not the best Thierry Bootson leading, there are now ten very broken motor cars now to hold this race And I feel confident in my mind, I haven't had any consultations But it seems very likely to me that this race will be stopped when it gets to the mandatory point where it can be stopped And Nakajima has moved past Eddie Cheever And Leto is now attacking Cheever So fourth position for Nakajima Some distance behind Riccardo Petrezzi who's having a very lonely race in third place I get the feeling that maybe Petrezzi in the spins that he had may have just damaged his car a little bit We haven't seen him for a while to see if it's carrying any damage But he's dropping back from the leaders Bootson really looking very together in the lead He's driving very sensibly, he hasn't really looked like making any mistakes But this is a very very good controlled drive by Thierry Bootson, again one of his best Let me explain the point I was making about stopping the race If the race is stopped because of weather or whatever other reason At one third distance, 33% of the race distance, half world championship points are awarded That's 27 laps, Bootson is on his 26th lap now And Leto has also passed Eddie Cheever now So the stars of the race if you like, fourth and fifth place now, Nakajima and Leto Leto lost a bit of time getting by Cheever in seven seconds behind Nakajima But they've been locked in combat throughout And really I have to admire the effort of Bootson He's remained apparently unflustered in the conditions He's kept it on the island when all around him has been falling off the island And once more we see the view from Cheever's car But he seems to be struggling to stay with the others He's dropped back a bit behind Leto already Yes, right off the cam in that corner Not that I'm blaming him in the least conditions As you see the water streaming up over the side of the arrows Truly appalling With Thierry Bootson leading on now the 27th lap I've got one eye on the flag marshal of the start and finish point And another on the monitor And he is now 5.4 seconds ahead Glenn Dix is actually ready with the red flag, I can tell you that And Glenn Dix is the man who would operate the checkered flag To finish the Australian Grand Prix We're seeing blue flags out here now That means there's someone behind you who wants to pass Yes, well the rules state that if they're going to stop the race now And once they've got past one third distance They then can stop the race, have a delay to see if the weather improves If it doesn't and it remains too dangerous to continue They can then declare it a result But it is only a half Grand Prix in that they have half points If the race reaches two thirds distance And then gets stopped on the grounds of Saint-Fiorment Passes two thirds distance Then it is a full Grand Prix But if they stop it and hold it for a while and then restart it It becomes two heats that add together and it's a full race So they can restart later if the weather improves See you later Let's have a coke Can you tell us where the waves are? Oh, hello Parsons, I'd like to expose to you one of my best kept secrets, men Direct from Surface Paradise comes Manpower Australia The all Australian male dance review that's taking the country by pet from trouble Vista Stallone with John Michael Housen See Wayne Gardner Ross Daniels Kung Fu King And Bruce Coburn Midday with Ray Martin It's live on 9 Bendix holding the red flag on the rostrum So he may well be considering wielding it No, I think not We've just had a message from Race Control Saying that they have absolutely no intention of stopping the race Which is good news 28 laps now On the 28th lap having done one third race distance First island, Bendix moving And it is Thierry Bootson leading in the Williams Renault It's the second time he's been in front of a Grand Prix And showing signs of winning it In Canada he did so That's Pirro who is well down Manini is dropping back all the time He's now 7.7 seconds behind Thierry Bootson in the lead Riccardo Petrezzi is third And then there's a long gap Because Petrezzi is 32 seconds behind Manini As Bootson goes through to take Stefano Modena Tip-toeing round Eddie Chiva in the background And you can see that Bootson has actually now Lacked everybody up to Nakajima Who is in fourth position So the Belgian is going very, very well indeed After all Senna went off and admittedly he hit Martin Brunwell Mansell's gone off But Bootson has managed to stay on the circuit And as in every race to win you have to finish And that's only seven seconds behind Nakajima But he has got Pirro between them And of course with the visibility problems It won't be easy to get past Sorry, Gugelbein he had in the March And that won't be easy for him to get past any car for that matter Bootson comes from Brussels incidentally Started his career like most racing drivers in cars Went on to Formula 4, Formula 3, Formula 2, all the different categories Up into Formula 1 Drove for Arrows for three years Then for Benetton for two years This is his second year with Williams There is the Arrows going down to Catterville Street Which is renamed for the Australian Grand Prix No it isn't, sorry that was Jodan Street And Bootson now lapping consistently in about 1 minute 43 seconds Which is 1.3 seconds faster than Nannini in second place Eddie Cheever with behind him Stefano Modena And he sees his left front wheel No, ah that's, see there is part of the body He has got somebody's left right wing I think stuck in his bodywork That's a guess, I don't know But he has got something distinctly non-standard sticking out to the left side of the Arrows And it wouldn't be at all surprising of course if he had made contact And there we are, you can see it again You can see it is acting as a kind of water break He has got somebody's spoiler jammed between the side pod at the bottom of the car As Nannini comes through to lap him, Nannini in second place There is only enough left for the front wings lying around on the circuit For him to have picked one up between several of the past companies And I think we have lost JJ Leto, I didn't see him go past at that time They were looking to see what happened to Leto Well I can tell you he is not in sixth position because Martini has just gone through Here is a replay having a look at Eddie Teva's car And you can see that I am guessing, spoiler, front spoiler jammed between the side pod and the body And on lap 13 which is still five laps short of what we think fall distance will be Thierry Bootson in these appalling conditions leads by 14 seconds With in second position Alessandro Nannini in the Veneton In third position Riccardo Patrese in fourth position but lacked already Nakojima Fifth position is Eddie Chima, sixth is Martini, seventh is Kiro So as James surmised, JJ Leto having forced his way up into the points seems to be out of the race And how do you like this new fastest lap of the race by Satoru Nakojima Nakojima is really being a star today and there it is on the caption And this must be the greatest moment of Nakojima's life so far, certainly his finest race ever And good for him, he is making me eat some of the criticisms I have levelled in the past Although I think at the time they were justifiable But I am very pleased that Nakojima is doing so well today Yes, Surmise is an extremely nice chap, the highest he has finished this season is a couple of eighth places in Brazil and Fretland There is the graphic which shows you where the yellow dot leader Thierry Bootson is in comparison to his teammate Alessandro Nannini He is actually approaching the season's stag turn now as he turns into the right Now he is on his next corner, the one that has claimed most of the people including Nigel Mansell Into the right hander goes Bootson, that is artificial curbing which is not there during the other 365, well the non-Australian call three days of the year And Bootson now is putting away hand over fist from Alessandro Nannini who is 16 seconds behind the Williams Renault And it gives me a chance to congratulate Renault in public again They came back into Grand Prix racing at the beginning of this year having previously had an RN engine which won races but not the World Championship and they opted out They came back with a new engine designed by Bernard Dudo, a V10 And this was supposed to be their experimentation if you like, their pilot year, getting ready for 1991 But already Thierry Bootson has won the Canadian Grand Prix and had three third places And Riccardo Petrezzi has had four second places and a third so Renault is back with a vengeance Yes and I can't stress too much what an excellent race Bootson is driving He is the one person who has stood up while all else have tripped and fallen by the wayside Some of them to start again He has resisted a powerful challenge from Nannini Resisted it sufficiently well that Nannini would now appear not to be chasing any more some nearly 18 seconds behind Bootson He resisted it without panicking, without trying to go too quickly And there is Leto's car parked, I saw it there, it didn't appear to be damaged So if Leto, and we just got a message that Leto stopped for engine reasons and that is cruel luck Because the one thing that in the wet doesn't normally happen is mechanical failure Because the cars are so understressed compared with what they are designed for That mechanical failure is a very rare thing in these conditions As we've seen today, normally accident damage and that sort of thing And while you are watching Nannini concentrating on second place It gives me an opportunity as well to say congratulations to Australia Who as ever are putting on a superb Grand Prix on an excellent circuit With truly impressive organisation and administration In 1985 the Grand Prix came here for the first time And it seems to have got better and better every year And it's a good thing for Nannini this year because amongst other things There was a complete contingency plan covering absolutely everything For what would happen if, as it has turned out to be, it was wet And Thierry Bootson has now completed 33 laps That last lap we did has superseded Nacogibus' fastest lap So Bootson, very impressive indeed, he's going steadily quicker He's always been up quickly around the quickest, well on the quickest on the circuit And now he's really grinding out a big lead in fact And very soon I would have thought he would be starting to measure his lead back to Nannini It's now over 20 seconds Alessandro, not bad if he finishes second, he would have won in Japan Second here, two third places, two fourth places, a fifth, a sixth and so on The Venetan was getting very close to it last year Which was the turbo year with the Ford V6 engine And then this year, of course like everybody else, no, last year of course, I apologise This year they have gone to the 3.5 litre Ford engine And it's the new development one as opposed to the DFR And that is Riccardo Petrezzi Now if Petrezzi can stay where he is with Nigel Mansell out of the race He would move up to third place in the World Championship There is only two points difference between Riccardo with his four second places this year And Nigel Mansell who of course is very much out of the Australian Grand Prix Bootson has completed another lap and that is his 33rd And Petrezzi is on target at the moment to move up one place in the World Championship See you later Let's have a coke Can you tell us where the waves are? You can't stop it Feel it when you find the real thing You can't beat it You can't beat the feeling Corey Feldman and Corey Hayne, you loved them in Licence to Drive Now coming soon to Videomania, Dream a Little Dream Just say goodnight and kiss me Just hold me tight and tell me you'll miss me With dreams like these who needs reality? Sizzler No, wait, do you have any protection? Tuesday, Tony's running for president in Who's the Boss? What's your position regarding school lunches? Well, let me just say this about that Ketchup is not a vegetable It's going to be a dirty campaign My worthy opponent who's living in sin with his so-called boss And he's going to need all the help he can get Mother, I'm surprised you didn't stoop lower It's an hour of outrageous comedy You got the comedy going Book one for Who's the Boss, 7.30 Tuesday on the Nine Network It may be paradoxically a bit easier for the drivers that are left on the circuit Not only because they've got their rhythm and know what the conditions are like But because there are far less cars on the circuit There are only nine runners at the moment And there's less than an hour gone And because there are only nine runners It means that each of those nine will have a clearer circuit, obviously That he would have done if he had 25 other people against him 24 other people because Alain Prost did not start But the World Championship to hark back to that is very much resolved Because there's, of course, from the moment that Ertensena went out so violently and spectacularly There was absolutely no question of him maintaining his lead and winning in Australia For making seven wins to the four that Prost had already had And Senna would at least probably have been able to say I was the fourth World Champion Even if it was taken away from him But now he is out, Prost didn't start You're looking at the charging Satoru Nakajima from Japan in fourth position A long gap, 29 seconds now behind Riccardo Patrese But the race seems to very much have settled down indeed For another hour The nine have got to, I would hardly say, grind around the Adelaide circuit Float around the Adelaide circuit would be a better way of describing it And they are all pretty spread out Senna's just off to complete his 34th lap He's just lapped to 142.1 He's extended his lead yet further over Nanini There is Piro, about to be lapped by Nakajima Of course, Piquet is very much out of the race too with another violence And that's Frank Williams One of the truly great men of Grand Prix racing Despite being confined to a wheelchair, turns up to every race And he is now worriedly relishing the prospect of another win for the Williams team With Thierry Bootson there at the wheel And I was saying that they are getting pretty spread out As you watch Bootson go down, grab him straight to Caterville Terrace Go in what you will and into the acute second gear right hander Grab him to accelerate away and then go through and complete another lap He is getting on for half a minute ahead of Nanini Who is getting on for half a minute ahead of Patrese Who is half a minute ahead of Nakajima And then there is Eddie Chiba who is a minute behind Over a minute behind the Japanese driver Martini still going strong, is in sixth position now Piro that we are seeing from time to time is in seventh place Mauricio Gurgelman with his team mate Ivan Capelli long since having disappeared Is in eighth place And Stefano Fominer with his team mate Martin Brungel out of the running is in ninth place And those are the nine that are left in the Australian Grand Prix With only an hour gone Well we have beaten the 1988 record when 11 people finished We have beaten the 1986 record when 10 people finished We are equaling the 1987 record when 9 finished But in 85 there were only 8 Make of that what you will And still no sign of any let up from the rain This heavy drizzle, continue to come down The mist over the hills And really no sign whatsoever of any change in the weather James you have done it, I haven't Driven in conditions like this How do you moderate your driving to make sure that you go as fast as you possibly can While staying on the island and preferably maintaining your position Well if you ask for that, it is with great difficulty It is really tip toe stuff, got to be tremendously light on the controls Because all these cars are being designed for dry weather conditions They get a lot more grip, they got much too much power For the wet, the brakes are very vicious and violent So everything, the steering is very direct And all these things are exaggerated in the wet So the cars have to be treated with real fingertip control A tremendous concentration because they get away from you with very little warning indeed And it really is an exercise in great self control And a certain amount of bravery because the visibility in these conditions Is probably the single worst factor that the driver has to take The car worse than the car sliding about is following another car Even as far as 100 yards away and just being presented with a complete wall of spray Through which you can't see anything ahead And to see when you're following closely behind another car You literally have to look at the side of the track to see where you are on it Yes, and there's another problem of course And that is keeping the inside of the visor free of condensation Motorcyclists who are listening to me will know that there are all sorts of dodges Ranging from rubbing the inside of the visor with a piece of potato To putting special preparations on it But it's very, very difficult when you're breathing out And the temperature inside your helmet is higher than the temperature outside your car Because of the wind and the spray And incidentally that's Nakajima bearing down on Martini It's very difficult to avoid condensation Nakajima doing everything he can to find a way through and succeeding While the Japanese driver really is driving the race of his life as James has said The highest he has ever finished before was one fourth position He's had a fifth position, he's had a single six place two But today he looks as though he's going to at least equal his previous record Here he is Lotus Jag, the Lotus team will be absolutely delighted for him and themselves They have to have the best of seasons They have regrouped completely at Lotus Because next year they are not going to have either PK or Nakajima that you are looking at They are being replaced by that experienced and extremely likeable charger Derek Warwick And Nakajima is being replaced by Martin Donnelly, the Irish driver who has shown so much promise in the last couple of years They are going to have a new engine instead of the V8 Jund They are going to have a V12 lap or E-D engine The same as is in the Lola and that has been getting better and better race by race Frank Derny, their new designer for 1989 He's already designed a fine car He's going to slot with some changes the new engine into it And when I tell you that Nelson Piquet said to me here That if he had had a Honda engine in this year's Lotus chassis He felt that it would beat the McLaren That is an indication of how good the Frank Derny chassis is Good day How are you doing? Good thanks You're off on a golfing holiday, are you? Yeah I play a bit myself actually Off 20? I'd be off 12 if I could putt Yeah I know the feeling It's a cruel game isn't it? It sure is Can I get you a beer? Yeah that would be great Thanks mate Two more please Yeah certainly sir You know this was pretty hard to get overseas when I first started travelling Now it's everywhere Yeah well it's got a great flavour hasn't it? So where are you off to? Mr Shearer, your boarding pass sir Oh thanks very much So, I don't know what you're going to do Oh yeah I wouldn't expect Well there you go Looks like we've got an extra 30 minutes to work on that one Cheers mate Yeah great Cheers Here's a balanced diet, high in soluble fibre, yet low in salt and animal fats Can help control blood pressure and cholesterol Kellogg's understand this and have developed a new style oat bran cereal, suitably called Balance Crisp oat bran granules with a fresh taste of hazelnuts, rice, wheat germ and honey As part of a balanced diet and sensible exercise programme, Kellogg's Balance helps put your life in better shape Oh hello Parsons, I'd like to expose to you one of my best kept secrets, men Direct from Surfers Paradise comes Manpower Australia, the all Australian male dance review that's taking the country by storm So if you're celebrating absolutely anything or you simply want an outrageous girls night out, come and see the boys from Manpower Australia It'll be a night you won't forget Book at Bass or at these venues I've spent most of my life putting news into newspapers So when it comes to television news, you'll understand if I seem a little juicy In my humble opinion, Rob Kelvin and Kevin Kreese deliver the most authoritative news service in Adelaide Hard-hitting, straight to the point and most importantly, factual I know what goes in a national news service and I like what I see That's what I want So, Burtson leading, that is Pirro in seventh position, trying to catch Martini and get both the Venetops into the top six because Nanini is in second place To help him get a drive for 1990 He's got far more experience than people give him credit for Because although he only came into Grand Prix this year when he replaced Johnny Herbert, he had been the McLaren's tester Oh, Eddie Cheever sounding very rough, or rather his arrows sounding very rough What's the master's diagnosis? Sounds like a bit of waterlogging in the electrics, the engine actually cleared as it got the revs up but it seems to be a bit of a damp pick-up And that sounded alright, yes, I think it's just a little bit rough on half throttle and on pick-up On full power it seems to be alright and his lap time suggests that he's not in too serious an engine problem He's lapping pretty much at the same speed that he has been for most of the race and still holding down fifth place Yes, I should think Eddie will be pleased when this race is over, he said that he's opting out of Formula One because he's lost his motivation He didn't think rightly or wrongly that he was in a car that was capable of winning and he's been right so far this season Next year of course if he's in conditions like this he won't mind as much because he will have the roof of the Jaguar over his head And at least he won't have wind and rain beating at him Bootson still leading, it is lap 39, 23.5 seconds, he's just gone through now to complete his 39th lap and into his 40th lap And you see that Eddie Cheever is hammering down the 180mph in dry conditions, grab him straight into that second gear, watch his hand as he changes gear Last aligier of René Arnoux parked by the wall and Eddie Cheever like all of them is tiptoeing around this circuit Trying to find the best possible compromise between a lot of revs and the avoidance of wheel spin and therefore not going off the circuit That's exactly where he went off the circuit yesterday in one of the most spectacular crashes I have ever seen He came out of that corner, he had the on-car camera working, he lost it when his left rear wheel slid up onto the curb and went straight into the wall Eddie Cheever then and his car was in the middle of the circuit minus the left rear wheel, Eddie furiously detached the steering wheel Plug it across the circuit and then plug himself after it and I have never seen a driver cover the distance from his car to the pit wall as quickly Bootson, there he is, Thierry Bootson, as in Canada when the weather conditions were much the same as this, he is leading He's coming up to 41 laps which will be half distance if the race went the full distance but there's absolutely no question of it doing that in these conditions Our best guess is 70 laps and I have said in the past that Bootson won in Canada by default He had a 360 degree spin at enormous speed and managed to keep it on the track but Ayrton Senna was ahead of him And it was not until Ayrton Senna went out of the race with a broken Honda engine, something that very seldom happens That Bootson in the closing stages of the race took over to win elatedly but if truth be told, if it wasn't for that problem with Senna's car he would have been second However, there is no question of that in this race, he hasn't inherited the lead, he has taken the lead And Bootson, Thierry Bootson took that lead on the 14th lap, it is now lap 41 and he has unremittingly not only retained it but extended it It's come down a little now because either Bootson has slowed down or Nanini has speeded up 1.2 seconds difference between the lap 40 time of Nanini which was 1 minute 42.3 and Bootson which was 1 minute 43.5 So the Belgian has nothing to worry about, he is obviously pacing himself, he is coming up now to lap Martini who was the only Minardi driver to start there As he does so is Alessandro Nanini completing the lap so that gives you an idea of how much distance there is, that's how much time there is Between the leader Bootson in the Williams red-o and this man Alessandro Nanini second in the Benetton 4 And think back to 1988, McLaren won 15 of the 16 races last year, they certainly have not had it their own way this year because Williams have already won one, so have Benetton and so of course have Ferrari And having just passed half distance of the race, Nanini is now starting impossibly to attack, he's just put up the last two laps, he's gone quicker and then quicker again, it's two fastest laps of the race And he's now got the gap down to 20 seconds and he is certainly lapping it quicker than Thierry Bootson at the moment And it may be that Nanini as the fuel load comes down will be starting possibly to attack And you can be sure that we will keep a very careful eye on it, if for now at the feast that it's one of the few things to keep a careful eye on at the moment There are just nine runners left, Bootson as James has just pointed out lapping slower than Nanini, the gap down to 20 seconds But Tracy half a minute behind the Italian countryman in third place Yes the good news for us is that the nine who are still out there are at the feast at the moment behaving themselves Because we've had nine cars only for quite some time now and they've all managed to keep it on the island and drive quite sensibly But the conditions haven't really got any easier, the rain is still coming down this strong heavy heavy drizzle and the clouds have in fact closed in even more And looking out across the circuit to the hills behind, some of them are completely shrouded in cloud now and that hasn't been the case earlier today Look at Thierry Bootson's car and he... And Nanini is definitely catching, Nanini's got the gap down now to 17 and a half seconds, he pulled another two and a half seconds from Bootson's lead on that lap, lap 42 So Nanini is certainly making some sort of a play to try and catch Bootson, Bootson will surely by now have been informed by his team And we'll see if Bootson has been taking it easy and can now respond to this attack Yes look at Bootson's car and here's an interesting fact for you motor racing historical buffs You will know that this is the FW13 which has replaced the FW12C at rather more than mid-season The car has been a long time coming because Patrick Head, its designer who has produced so many world championship race winning cars, was not prepared to put it on the circuit until he was happy It's really designed for active suspension which was the system that Lotus pioneered and Williams also used in the past last year But it is on conventional suspension now and has been a notably nervous car in the early races That has not stopped it doing extremely well, Bootson has just gone through to complete another lap, the gap was down to 17 seconds, Nanini goes through Bootson has responded, his last lap was almost a second quicker than Nanini's, the gap has gone up to 18.5 seconds, we are on lap 44 now On Nines hilarious Friday night at the movies Who's that, who's that, what do you want? And just as I was saying earlier on, Ayrton Senna would have been very much in touch with his pitch to Rob Dennis with the radio to keep in touch with what was happening The same will apply to Thierry Bootson and in his pit his team engineer and team manager will be in touch with him by radio monitoring his progress informing people who are behind him And this is the battle that you are looking at now for sixth position because Pirro in the background is closing up on Pierluigi Martini Emanuele Pirro in his last race for Benetton and yet to score a world championship point is closing up on Martini and he's going to take him before very much longer of that there is very little doubt Pirro desperately looking like everybody else for a good finish in his last Grand Prix of 1989 and his last Grand Prix for Benetton is now right up with Martini Pirro in seventh place, Martini in eighth position and Pirro of course has got the ever present problem of trying to get past that wall of spray Unfortunately he's got the message, he responded, new fastest lap of the race for Thierry Bootson and now pushing the lead out again Edi Cieber going off but just holding it and whilst Bootson is going quicker and quicker and Edi Cieber is trying to get going, never mind go quicker He's stalled it, he's lost the engine, he's got the right front wheel off the ground, you can see it spinning there, he's not only stalled the engine but he's beat the car Now it's rolling backwards, he's on the surface and there is the battle for sixth position between Pierluigi Martini in the yellow, white and black Minardi and the challenging Emanuele Pirro Replay of Edi Cieber, let's watch and see what happens, loses it, left lock, up over the kerb, yes, coming any second now Just missed the kerb, you can see it in the foreground, he stops, rolls forward, over the kerb and walks away, a disgusted Edi Cieber is out of his last Grand Prix for Arrows And I think he's going to be very glad indeed to see the back of what has been a disastrous 1989 for himself except for the Grand Prix in his own home town, Phoenix, America where he finished in third place Pirro is there, up into fifth position ahead of Martini, new fastest lap so far for Thierry Boots and 1 minute 40.771, 135kms and you're looking now at not only Pirro and Martini But Alessandro Nannini who in second place is about to lap and does so Martini, I think the Italian was probably racked on and lost his rhythm when Pirro went past him Well we're down to the 1985 figure now, 8 competitors, it looks like the Australian Grand Prix is going to create a new record of having the least number of finishers And if Nannini does much more of that he's going to be one of them but I think he caught it very well and Bootson on lap 46 is 23 seconds ahead 23 seconds ahead of Alessandro Nannini who is 30 seconds ahead of Riccardo Patrese So the Williams cars are still first and third on their way to 13 world championship points to more than consolidate their second place in the Constructors Championship With this combination of the old FW12 and this new FW which stands for Frank Williams 13th car Riccardo Patrese is now the fastest man on the circuit, 1 minute 40.8 and that is two tenths of a second faster than Bootson and four seconds nearly faster than Nannini And although there's a half minute gap between the two of them, if he goes on at that rate in about 7 or 8 laps he's going to be up with the Italian in the Benetton There he is leading his own countryman, Emanuele Pirro So it is a Belgian in the lead, it is an Italian, this Italian, Alessandro Nannini second place, another Italian, Patrese in third place, a Japanese Nakajima fourth And then two more Italians, Pirro and Martini in fifth and sixth places, but as you can see two laps behind I don't think it would be unfair to say that the Australian draw pre has turned into an interesting rather than a rivetingly exciting race, but my goodness, we had our share of excitement and contention before the race even began Then when it began with Alain Prost coming into the pit lane to retire voluntarily after just one lap, the restart of the race and then a succession of people going out in these dreadful conditions Gerhard Berger, René Arnoux, Derek Warwick, then the race leader Ayrton Senna hitting Martin Brunwell to go out in the most violent and spectacular fashion Alex Cathay going out with I think a badly twisted arm, followed by his teammate Andrew de Cesaris, then Nigel Mansell whizzed over the kerb, bumped into the wall backwards for the second time today to leave the race in his Ferrari Nelson Piquet out when he collided with Pierre Carlo Ginzani who literally hopped out of the car, then Grial Leto and Chiva and you're up to date And Thierry Putsen is really laughing very consistently now considering the conditions He's laughing within three or four tenths of a second at the same time every lap His lead's entirely comfortable when Nalini challenged a little bit a while back Putsen was able to respond immediately, Nalini closed the gap down to 17.5 seconds At that point Putsen came in a little bit poor and the gap is now just under 27 seconds So in five laps he's pulled away nearly 10 seconds from the situation as it stood before Patrese, well, some nearly 30 seconds behind Nalini in third place So the first three very well spread out, nearly half a minute between each car And then Patrese in turn, 20 seconds ahead of Nakajima who has just put up a new fastest lap of the race It's a tour of Nakajima without any doubt the drive of his career He's made no noticeable errors, he's been quick all the way and now he's on the caption And really a fabulous drive in such difficult circumstances for the Japanese Yes, let's run through the starters and see who's left Well we know that Senna and Dirk Rost are both out We know that Alessi is out We know that Martin Rundle has disappeared Derrick Warwick and Thibaut are both out of course Nelson Piquet out Neither Maurizio Guterman nor Capelli are still running Nicola Larini and Ginzani are both out Alex Caffey and Andrea de Cesaris have left the Australian Grand Prix René Arnaud and Olivier Grigard have done the same thing as have Nigel Mansell and Gerhard Berger Philippe Alio is missing and so is JJ Leipzig And we now have an official statement which I won't pretend for a moment has filled me with amazement And that is that the race is running to the two hour limit and not the 81 lap limit That of course was bound to happen when the conditions with rain and slipperiness of the circuit made it quite impossible to run the planned 81 laps within the maximum time limit of two hours Channel 9 proudly presents the Academy Award winning A Passage to India And yet another new fastest lap for Nakajima and 1 minute 39.3 and that brings the gap now down to 15.2 seconds to Patrese and there's no doubt that Patrese is doing his best to respond but Nakajima is just going quicker and quicker With the fastest lap in the race, the first one in under 1 minute 40 seconds no mean achievement to put it very mildly indeed There's Bootson, he's only just over the 1 minute 40 and he's obviously got a superb rhythm going driving automatically, just keeping everything steady He will know where the deep water around the circuit is or the deeper water around the circuit and be very, very careful to avoid it You notice he's got a red light on at the back that is mandatory too The Formula 1 car construction regulations make it obligatory for all the cars to carry a red light and for it to be switched on when the conditions are like they are today I remember Johnny Herbert saying to me when he came in to talk to me after having retired from the Belgian Grand Prix in conditions just like this and when I asked him how close you had to get to the car in front to see the red light and he said somewhat wryly, you have to put your helmet on it before you can see it There's nobody in danger of doing that to Alessandro Giannini at the present moment because he's got a half minute gap between himself and Riccardo Petruasi And as James has said, it is Nacogina that's making the running at the moment with fastest lap after fastest lap in order to enable him as he will know from his radio contact with the pit to cut down the gap between himself and Riccardo Petruasi in third place This is Nannini And you saw there, take a close look next time you see him going round a corner and you see his head in shot you can actually see condensation on the inside of his visor You can also see how the visor has propped open just a little bit to get air underneath it and that's very important, to be able to prop the visor open and keep air flow and keep it de-misting There's Riccardo Petruasi, still in third place but with Nacogina getting steadily close on the last time they came round the gap was 13.5 seconds only, Petruasi though is responding he's just... when he crossed the line then that was his fastest lap of the race So it looks like the battle is beginning to develop as Nacogina goes through and the gap actually, Petruasi's response is now just over 14 seconds Well we've been working overtime at the statistics I can tell you that the Grand Prix for the fewest finishers was the Monte Carlo, the Monaco Grand Prix in 1966 going back into the distant past that was out of 16 starters actually 4 finished, 25% of the entry And interesting fact Thierry Bootsen leaves Van Ede second And a lot hangs on this of course if Bootsen can finish he's not only going to do his self respect a great deal of good because he has been criticised in the past for being a good steady runner rather than a charger and a winner and he would be able to... He's been criticised in the past for being a good steady runner rather than a winner Well he's proved his critic wrong on one occasion albeit by default in Canada this year when he won, if he finishes in first place this year and in two hours we reckon he's going to be around about 70 laps and he's on lap 54 at the moment he has going to have confounded them because he's really dominated this race since the departure of Ayrton Senna That was Petruasi, this is Stefano Modena they are going through the S's at the end of a double back Yes, Stefano Modena has had a pretty miserable race really with Torelli tyres clearly not up to the mark of the good jersey in these conditions and he's I think elected to take a steady round and try and keep the car in one piece to get him finished out of it and in the circumstances with not having as much grip as most of the others I think that's probably a sensible decision meantime the battle between Petruasi continues albeit separated by 13.5 seconds at the moment This is the Nissan 1.8 litre fuel injected twin cam exer it's a coupe, a Targa and a Cabrio all in one and it's backed by Nissan's 2U warranty Now this is the new limited edition grown pre-exer it's additional features include air conditioning special mag wheels and front spoiler yet it costs no more than the regular exer Hey, hey, that's my car Right now Pizza Hut are making a really great offer on jugs not just any jugs but very special jugs not that special, this special 2 litre cooler jugs for only $5.95 while stocks last with the purchase of any Pizza Hut pizza then right through summer every time you call in for a takeaway or dial a home delivery we'll fill the jug with Pepsi absolutely free so while stocks last get your cooler jug now for only $5.95 then get free Pepsi fill-ups with every takeaway or home delivered pizza Pizza Hut making it great The best pictorial study of the 1988 Australian Grand Prix was a judge to be this fine shot of a lame cross by Simon Stamberry Now available as a glossy colour photograph to keep yourself or give as a gift it measures 350 by 500 millimetres and costs $45 including postage and handling To order your copy make your cheque or money order playable to NWS 9 and send it to NWS Channel 9 photo offer 202 Tin Street North Adelaide 5006 Enclose your name and address for return postage within 14 days It will be remembered as the hottest movie ever to be screened on Australian television Two Moon Junction She was pure, innocent and about to marry then a man stepped into her life and threatened to tear it apart Darling, don't ever take a southern woman for granted A story of forbidden love The film has stunned moviegoers across Australia for the first time on television 8.30 to 9.00 Two Moon Junction Just to keep the car on the track He's now 35 seconds ahead of Bootson who has just made his fastest lap 1 minute 40.38 and as James has said, incredibly consistent in these conditions Manini threw onto his 55th lap and the leader Bootson has lapped everybody up to the fourth position man Satoru Nakajima Patrese is 24 seconds behind Manini The thing of interest is how far behind Patrese now is Nakajima He's just going through to complete a lap and the answer is 13.7 seconds He's closed up a little on the Williams in front Yes, and Patrese is really pushing now He's put his own fastest lap of the race up and undoubtedly a battle developing between these two which of course they will be well informed about with the gap At the moment it looks as if Patrese's response is pretty much holding the gap at 3.13 and 15 seconds Question, how difficult is it as Bootson must be doing to maintain your concentration in a situation where you're out on your own, you know there's a big gap behind you but you've got to finish to win Well, the problem always is to keep going, to keep everything tidy, to keep it neat and of course in these slippery conditions of concentration you don't really get any chance to relax because the car is so nervous that that fact alone has a tendency to keep one awake and Bootson has shown already in Canada, in the Canadian Grand Prix which he won also in similar conditions that he is able to drive very consistently Like this, he's shown today tremendous qualities in not being flustered First went Patrese, he passed him early in the race He's sat at the pace that was comfortable for him which incidentally has been pretty quick and he has lapped amazingly consistently Indeed he has, he's on his way to a large bundle of money quite apart from the prestige of winning in Australia How much money? I can't tell you because the very considerable prize fund is shared out amongst the teams according to a secret formula of which we have broad details but not finite details In qualifying for instance, the top 20 drivers share out a special fund There is a special prize for the man who's leading at quarter distance, who's leading at half distance who's leading at three quarter distance and who's leading when the race finishes and there's a special prize for fastest lap but I can't tell you what the figures are All I can tell you is that none of today's top Grand Prix drivers are exactly wondering where their next dollar is coming from Bootson is not one of the highest paid drivers but that doesn't stop him from having his own aeroplane which he has learned to fly and uses for a lot of his trips It doesn't stop Nelson Piquet from having his own yacht and his own helicopter to get to it and so on There is a lot of money to be made if you are a top Grand Prix driver but you have to make it the hard way and this is what Bootson is doing now keeping the car on the island and he has got some 640 horsepower behind him and Nakajima, another new fastest lap and he is achieving that he's got the gap down under 12 seconds Riccardo Petrezzi, Petrezzi is well aware of Nakajima's progress he's responding as best he can but Nakajima is still closing although not as quickly as he would like Just try to imagine what it's like to drive one of these cars in these conditions they weigh 500 kilograms they have, as I said, a 650 horsepower engine behind them they will accelerate from standstill to 120 miles an hour and stop again in something like 5 seconds Somebody said to me yesterday it's like riding on the front of a bullet and I said well I've never actually done that but I can imagine that you are right there are tremendous G-forces as you go around the corners your neck muscles can get strained indeed drivers going up from the lesser 480 to 480 have to do a special exercise to strengthen their neck muscles and in the past there have even been instances of the helmet being anchored to the side of the car with a bit of chain to prevent the drivers head from lolling over but the thing to do about that is the right exercises Thierry Boonson's obviously done them he's on his 58th lap he's leading Alessandro Delle Nino who is going faster than him at the moment by 35 seconds there is the Belgian coming up to lap here Luigi Martini we've said a lot about the tyres that Martini has got on his car they did extremely well in the qualifying they have not got as good a race tyre as the Goodyear runners and it is certainly showing now because here Luigi Martini started the highest ever Enminard is third on the grid and he's now slipped well down the race and at long last the rain has abated a little bit but unfortunately not enough to make any significant difference in conditions, it's still a drizzle it's not quite as heavy as it was but it's still pretty consistent there's no way the cars will even get a dry line as it is Tracey going past the usual bit of power we'll see how twitchy the cars are there's an enormous amount of power they've got spin their wheels very easily indeed I saw just as Tracey's car got under power how the back snapped out of the line and there you could hear the wheel spin as Tracey's car accelerated away out of the hairpin the last one we had go out of my memory so as me right unless I'm very much mistaken was Eddie Cheever who came out of the race and disgustedly walked away from the car and we're expecting this race to finish Australian time about 5 minutes past 5 and that means to say in about 17 minutes time with the drivers on their 59th lap and it's going to be a long and demanding 17 minutes for all of them some words of encouragement for small business the commander systems had the ability to grow as we've grown the system's easy to operate telecom really look after small businesses like ours telecom's sales and service is second to none I don't think we'd risk using another system other than the commander the right choice is vital in business so why take a risk with anything but a telecom commander system call telecom for all you need to know because there is only one commander what's the best lunch idea around town? everybody's favourite funny man tonight 7.30 on the 9 Network it's going to be quite a hard one for Nakajima who is now only 9 seconds behind the train team but it would seem very much tough to go as to whether Nakajima is going to run out of time yes it's going to be a very close run thing is the Williams going to finish first and third or is the Lotus man, the sole Lotus man going to do it it would be a very fitting last Lotus race for Satoru Nakajima who is there watch the way he's going as he comes up to lap Brazilian Mauricio Guttemann in the March Judd he's got a special Judd engine in with a narrow angle of the V8 engine in order to enable Adrian Newey to design a very slippery motor car which he has done sadly it's given all sorts of problems this year indeed Ivan Capelli who is Gujumin's team mate has only finished once this year in 16 races when he was 12th in Belgium and the gap is now and the Tracy responding to the pressure from Nakajima, his fastest lap of the race and he's pulled up a little bit of time then, 10.5 seconds now the gap Gujumin, he's a gentleman driver, he realised that there was no point in trying to keep Nakajima back because he had already been lapped and he knew that the Japanese driver was in contention for a good place to finish Gujumin is in 7th place, he's only 1 place off for points at the moment because it's 9 points for a win, 6 for second, 4 for third, 3 for 4, 2 for 5th and 1 for 6th place Nakajima is therefore on 3 points at the present moment which has helped Lotus a bit in the Constructors Championship in fact it would move them in front of Arrows there we are, 16 minutes now to the end of the race is the official message I've been given and Nakajima going for third nothing to lose and a great deal to gain he would be the first ever Japanese driver to be standing on the podium at the end of a Grand Prix if he finished in that third position he's already the hero of Japan because he's the only Grand Prix driver they've had who has done anything in the way of finishes, wiping his visor Aguri Suzuki, his countryman who's been driving or trying to drive for Zakspeed this year has had an awful season, I say trying to drive because he's failed to pre-qualify for every race 11.8 seconds now Yassin Petrezzi has really clearly got the message has managed to pull something out of the bag and is now currently napping quicker than anybody else on the circuit and the difference between Petrezzi's last lap then and Nakajima's last lap was 1.2 seconds and that's plenty, that's enough for Petrezzi to maintain his third position I was saying that Nakajima's the hero of Japan because of what he's already achieved and that is a fourth, a fifth and a sixth position in the three seasons he's been driving for Lotus if he can finish in third place I should think the whole of Japan would go mad and Japan is getting more and more interested in Grand Prix racing there are now six teams who have a major involvement with Japanese money Gerard Larousse has just sold half his share holding in the Larousse Lola team to Japanese interests Jackie Oliver and Alan Rees have done the same thing with Arrows McLaren of course have got Honda Rangers now those numbers at the bottom are the Rees numbers and the positions five is race leader, Keirih Boutsen that you're looking at 19 is Nanini who is second, six is Petrezzi who is third 12 is Nakajima who is fourth, 20 is Piro who is in fifth position and 23, Pierluigi Martini who is in sixth place there are only two other runners, they are Guchemin 7 and Modena 8 take a very careful look at every inch of Keirih Boutsen's Williams Renault as he goes around that comparatively slow corner it's in very good shape, he's managed to keep it away from other cars and from the walls you can see the Belgian's eyes looking beat behind the visor he has them opened as much as he possibly can to let the maximum amount of light in concentrating every inch of the way you see he's keeping well away from the edge of the corners, keeping away from the curves that might knock his car out of line because if he hit one and then came back on this wet track the car would be gone in a trice and the rain which had slowed down for a little while and turned into heavy drizzle has now turned into heavy rain again this is what we feared might happen when we heard the weather forecast this morning but hoped desperately that it wouldn't Nannini there in second position 33, 34 seconds nearly behind and 8 seconds Nannini now 8 seconds behind Patrese now the gap there, that's Nakajima was 3 seconds faster than Patrese there he's not aware of Patrese having been held up by anybody in front of him and nor has Nakajima, they've both got clear tracks and now the Japanese man really is on his way yes he had a bit of a hiccup in his progress a couple of laps ago when he lost a fair bit of time when he was napping by Ritz and Guglielman and that gave Patrese a welcome bit of breathing space but the gap closer than it's been at any other time, fractionally over 8 seconds there's Patrese, now we'll probably be able to see the gap as Patrese comes down into the hairpin of the racetrack hairpin I'll take a check on my stopwatch and we'll see what the difference is between them there is Nannini and there is Nakajima and according to my watch it's slightly less than 5 seconds in which case Nannini is taking 3 seconds a lap out of Patrese's lead there they are, you can see there's a visual gap now, they're coming through to complete the 64th lap another check coming up, first is Bootson, second is Nannini, third is Patrese fourth is Nakajima who accelerates down the start and finish straight and the gap is 4.97 seconds charger, banzai, Nakajima I think he's mentally put the white headband on underneath his helmet and Patrese trying very hard to keep it on an even queue Nakajima looks very confident he's going to maintain his progress and not get over excited but he's certainly driven a very level headed race indeed so far and for the second half of this race he's really been the good car on the circuit Bootson of course hasn't had to hurry, he's had a very comfortable lead, it's now 34.5 seconds over Nannini so no problem for him but Nakajima is racing for Patrese and he's closing in he's coming on his stagia and she's coming in a coat, they're coming in anyhow that they can they're all coming to Golden Grove Saddlery for bargains like these hats for just $20, Agelstar top boots top value at just $49 full length oil skins are give you 7 robos or nighttime comes around Come closer to yourself, surprise surprise, oh not that close Graham Kennedy's the king of fun and games, really, he's on top of the world Why does Donald Duck wear a jacket but no pants? Why do you? He's topical How do you feel about surrogate motherhood? He's so impossible Not tonight John, I've got a headache Graham Kennedy coast to coast, the mates are iced together Weeknights on the Nine Network I love it when he does that Bootson leads Nanini second, now Reidon, there is the battle for third Patrese and Nakajima getting closer all the time but as we have said many times before catching is one thing, passing is another Yes particularly in this instance where the Renault engine has the benefit of considerably more power than the Jardin engine in the Lotus and so Nakajima is going to have to be pretty cunning finding a way round Patrese if he can get very close to him and of course he's got the added complication of having all the spray from his car his ability is down and a new, yet another fastest lap for Nakajima and the gap now two and a half seconds Fastest lap of the race of course, not just his fastest lap and Riccardo Patrese must be wondering whether to implement the reputation he used to have as being one of the hardest men in the world to get past he seemed to have an infinitely adjustable car which he could make wider or narrower on the corners and he won't be making it all easy for Nakajima who is visually closing on him now Surely Riccardo Patrese must have some sort of a car problem I don't know what it can be, it will seem very obvious when he tells us afterwards I couldn't get third gear or something like that but I don't know what it is, all I can do is guess from the way that Nakajima is closing on Patrese and Nakajima has got a car with less power although of course you can't use all that much power in this race but it's going to be a change for third I think soon and Modena is a problem for Nakajima, unless he can get by him here Nakajima does not want to lose time behind Stefano Modena Modena unlikely to be aware of the fact that he's interfering with the best race on the circuit but Nakajima has forged his way past There we see the latest master snap as produced by Nakajima but that has come at an awkward time for him Patrese was fortunate in that he was able to get past Modena on the straight and got still two and a half seconds, nothing much changed of course things are very very difficult now for Nakajima there is his Lotus team, his mechanics in the garage watching anxiously, they must be very excited potentially their best result of the season but as I just said, following Patrese in all this spray makes life much more difficult now than it has been recently for Nakajima when he had a relatively clear track in front of him I reckon there's only about seven minutes left in this race with Boonson leading Nanini by 38 seconds Patrese is 17 seconds behind Nanini in third position and you can see the visual gap between Patrese in third place and the man who's challenging for it, and Patrese has got a problem I thought he must have, his engine is definitely misfiring which means to say he's got, let's listen well it wasn't there, it may well just have been wheelspin of course because if you feed in too much power you're going to hit the rev limiter and that would give the same impression but whatever is the reason, Patrese is slowing and Nakajima is gaining the engine sounds clean to me and of course they pop bang a bit on half throttle if he's feathering it in a corner he's just gone past us and both engines sounded clean the gap now under two seconds and of course you can see the gap busy on the circuit but we can see Nakajima a lot better than he can see Riccardo Patrese into this relentless wall of spray being thrown up by the Williams and this two hour race, there's got very few minutes left to run now about five and a half minutes no problem over the winner, if Moosunju can just keep going and he will be making super sure of not making any mistakes of going slower if he needs to but he's actually lapping faster than Nannini at the moment half a second faster, maintaining the gap at 38 seconds on his way to his second point three win watch Williams, watch Moosunju 68 laps, it looks as our forecast of 70-71 laps is going to be about right as Burson comes up to lap Maurizio Guglielmin's Leighton House March again no difference in the conditions, they are still absolutely dreadful Nannini has gone through lapping, down a second faster on that lap but now we wait for the battle and here it is, it's Patrese, it's Nannini it's 1.7 seconds, really the time is irrelevant now because Patrese will be able to see Nakajima in his mirrors Nakajima will be able to see Patrese in front of him the problem is I think they've got Martini between them now that's the problem with Nakajima, they went past the fence Patrese was passing Martini but I don't think Nakajima was able to do it he may yet have to follow Martini through all the twisty short runs right after the start-finish line well the team has gone out at the finish line to keep the photographers back the organisers are getting all ready to greet Thierry Moosun home as the winner of the Australian Grand Prix, that is the Renault Telemetry team they know from watching those monitors that Thierry Moosun's engine is in good shape I can see from the way they're sitting quite calmly and relaxedly there but they are not worried about any engine aspects of Moosun's car and you can see for yourselves that the Williams Renault is unmarked, is handling well Moosun is very much in charge and according to my watch which is not official time there are now two and a half minutes to go to the end of the 70th lap or the end of the two hours which we think will be on the 70th lap it is now lap 69, you're watching the man in second place now here is the battle for third and it looks to me as though Nakajima has dropped back, as though Patrese has speeded up and that is exactly the situation remember that Nakajima got held up by Martini then through the twisty section of the early part of the lap and that might just be the telling factor in his attempt to catch Patrese Patrese is certainly giving it, you can see that he's really trying now but twice in his charge Nakajima has been unlucky with backmasters in catching him at twisty points of the circuit and that just has been the difference then Dix, the man who has the absolutely unique style in producing and showing the checkered flag is out there in his yellow blazer with the checkered flag in his hand there he is, he's looking for Bootson who is approaching him now and there is one lap to go, Dix waves his hand not the Bootson would have seen it but Thierry Bootson is now we believe on the last lap of the Australian Grand Prix lap 70 in this race which was originally intended to be an 81 lap race and hats off to the Belgian he has driven a faster full race where driver after driver out of the 25 and his 26 less Alain Prost who started have gone off the circuit into the walls very few have retired for reasons other than leaving the circuit somewhat violently and Bootson has almost got the job done he is now round the stand turn down the Jones straight named after world champion Alan Jones almost home unless he can make it in under a minute from where we saw that time caption go up because it's touch and go I think he's going to just miss it so Bootson on what is likely to be his last lap we can't be certain and he has really driven a magnificent race completely controlled he's held on to the car beautifully in these conditions he hasn't really put a foot off and he's been quick and here he comes the two hours there is two hours the race will finish when Bootson crosses the line so tremendous drive by Thierry Bootson but certainly the driver the star of the race has been Satoru Nakajima who has put on a truly wonderful display and so far Patrese but he's given tremendous try so what a big day for the Frank Williams team they finished up first and third it was Bootson first followed by Nanini in the Benetton and Riccardo Patrese was third of the eight that finished the race today which was filled with so much drama it ended up being a great race and one that we talked about for many many years to come look forward to accompanying That career day's assembly should have been over with by now Well I just hope Anthony appreciates them going all the way into the inner city to his old high school I mean I'm all for being nice to the less fortunate and the poor But, well if they want our help I think they should move to better neighborhoods, don't you? Yeah, right Hey y'all we were just talking about you, how was career day? Great, there was a big turnout, you gave a super talk I think Anthony was very proud As a matter of fact it would have been an almost perfect morning if it wasn't for this one ugly little incident in the parking lot What ugly incident? Oh it's nothing, just a couple hoods got after Julia Well that doesn't surprise me, hoods love Julia She's got a little sachet on her wall Well what'd they say? Doesn't matter, they said the same asinine stuff They always say, well I know but just out of curiosity, what was it? I mean we always go through this, why do you have to know? I don't know, it's a sickness Alright Charlene, if you must know, they said, hey sweet meat, what it is, mm-mm, strut it out, bring it on home to me now Okay? But you haven't even heard the really big news, there was this other guy there at career day, a travel agent who was very impressed with Julia's talk He books these singles cruises down to the Bahamas for Brenner Cruise Line Which has just been purchased by a new owner who wants to completely refurbish the flagship And they're looking for a decorating company Oh you're kidding, that sounds wonderful I wouldn't get too excited, we haven't even met the owner yet and anyway I don't think we have time to be going on a cruise Well you can count me out, I'm not going on any singles cruise And I'm certainly not interested in putting up with a bunch of dorky men in bad toupees and polyester suits You know, I am sick and tired of everyone putting down people who wear polyester I mean I would just like to know who it was decided that it wasn't hip or cool I mean the fact is polyester doesn't wrinkle and it does travel very well And I know some very fine people who wear it and I think it's high time the truth was told Charlene, that is not the point, you're not the one who'd have to put up with those men There she goes again What does that mean? It just means that I have been on cruises before and the men always have a fit over me I mean we're in a confined area over a long period of time and it never fails By the time we dock, every woman on board hates my guts If you want to pay anything up to 600 bucks for a bag of fruit, suits yourself But if you want to pay just 179 bucks for a whistle and flute that'll make you look 10 feet tall and feel like Errol Flynn Then you'd better get into a famous Zanetti suit, factory direct from Suits U at Norwood and now at Port Adelaide 179 bucks to feel like Errol Flynn suits me Suits U, Norwood and commercial road Port Adelaide for the best value bags of fruit in town Good morning, if you're thinking about home security, and believe me it should be in these times, you need it You've got to think of Southern Screening, they built a great door I've seen our commercial that we've had online where that guy's trying to break your door down and he couldn't do it, that's tremendous That's right, we only sell genuine ample of security doors This grill here being the latest in the range, it's the 125 with a very small diamond there Even a midget couldn't get through there, that's a good idea Now you're also into other things now That's right, we have an extensive range of locks, we have the double action deadbolt We have the keyed window winder, the sliding deadlock And also locks of sliding aluminium windows You're covering just about everything now, you've got to keep those intruders out Now you're also into other things now That's right, we're also selling aluminium warnings now for outside windows That's a very, very good idea Now you guys build all your own tough doors here That's right, everything's made in the factory And how do we call you? No, just drunk Excuse me, I think there must be some mistake We're supposed to have a stateroom with a conversation area Right, this is it We're giving you the deluxe suite And as far as the conversation area, well, it's been my experience on this boat You can pretty much talk anywhere you want Well, I'm sorry, but I can't possibly stay in here There isn't enough room for my clothes Madam, count your blessings There are people in steerage that don't even have clothes They're right next to the boiler room and it's so hot they sit around naked all day playing cards You're making that up I am, we don't have cards Well, I am clawed at your service I'll just go and get the rest of her things I know her type, she's going to be trouble Well, I just cannot believe I let you all talk me into this What a dump That's why we're here, Suzanne, to fix it up That's right, and I think it's exciting even if it's not the love boat Love, exciting and new Come aboard, hear it Anthony, that's the warning whistle I guess I better shove off I'd just like to say bon voyage to four very wonderful people And may God be with you Well, I can tell you right now we're not going to be the only ones assigned at this table They're going to try and match us up with people who have similar interests And what I've seen on this tugboat, there's certainly isn't going to be anyone with interests similar to mine You're just going to act like a big donkey, aren't you, Suzanne? You're not even going to try to have a good time How can I have a good time? I can't even unpack my toiletries There's not enough room in the closet for all the dresses I've brought And that idiot Stuart lost two of my wigs I hate this boat I would just like to eat and get out of here The men on these cruises are so creepy I can just feel them wanting me I hate to disillusion you, Suzanne, but the only thing I see people around here wanting is a waiter Oh, get serious, Julia That guy over there has been undressing me with his eyes ever since I came in He was practically drooling I noticed, Tim. I thought he was choking on a piece of meat What I want to know is where to get it Anyway, Suzanne, even if that guy was undressing a person at this table, what makes you so sure it was you? Yeah, we admit you got a lot of stuff sticking out in the right spots, but the rest of us cleaned up pretty good, too You see, one day on board and it's already happened You're jealous We are not jealous We are just sick and tired of you acting like every man between here and Pluto is panting over you and the rest of us are dog biscuits Okay, now, now, now, just, you know, let's not fight We came here to work Since we are on a singles cruise, I think maybe we should just get this settled once and for all What is that? I mean, I challenge you Why don't we just see who can get the best-looking guy before the captain's dinner? That's the last night on board Now, Mary Jo, don't start this. That's just your Mai Tai talking No, I is not. I am serious and I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is All right, how much? Well, I need my travelers checks, so I'll just put up some jewelry Such as? Ted's opal pinky ring Oh, come on, you two, don't start Fine, and just to show you how confident I am, I'll put up Philip's diamond bracelet Looks like we've got your table. I'm sure they'll add some more guys soon. They always do Geez, there's four of you. That's a lot I mean, if you think about it, that means there's fewer spaces for guys Somebody obviously screwed up around here I don't know, Terry. What do you think? It's not good Anyway, this is Terry and I'm Janice. That's J-H-A-N-A. Only the H is silent. I added it myself Excuse me. I have to tell you, I absolutely love your makeup Look at that, Terry. Look at how those little lashes stay separated down there and they're not caked together at all Oh, I know what you mean. You know, sometimes if you use a wand down there, it gets real caked up on an individual lash It doesn't look natural, you know, and then the little black chunks fall down I hate that when that happens. Has that ever happened to you? No Ladies, may I take your order? Oh, it's Joan Collins. You're gonna be our waitress again, huh? Actually, darling, I'm tonight's entertainment, but they were shorthanded in the kitchen I see you two are still cruising Well, never give up. That's the spirit Aren't you the person who brought our bags on board? Yes, I am. And I know what you're thinking. You think that this is your wig, but it's not I've had this wig a long time, and I've never had it in my life But it's not. I've had this wig a long, long time. It just looks very, very similar Ladies and gentlemen, Renner Cruise Lines is proud to present tonight's dinner entertainment, the queen of the high seas, Mr. Claude Lavelle Oh, darling, hold this on a good chain I just cannot believe it. Did you all see that? He's got my wig on That's my wig. He stole it You sure? Of course I'm sure. I had that hair grown special for me I'm just gonna have to report him to the police Suzanne, don't make a big deal of it. Just let him have it Anyway, he looks real good, innit? She's got to go One bitch on this boat is enough Tammy Faye Baker is with us tonight I saw her on the deck Her makeup fell off, it was horrible Her face is that big And Catherine Hepburn, you do remember Catherine with that buzz-saw voice Oh hello Betty When Spencer Tracy met me he said, Kate I'm a man and you're a woman Well, I was happy It was the first time anyone ever confirmed the doctor's report I made this dumb bet that I could get the best looking guy on board before the captain's dinner and Oh I was wondering if you might know somebody Well, this guy over here, he gets a lot of women As a matter of fact, he's been on every cruise I've ever been on I hate his guts You can't use him, he's talking to the girl I made the bet with Whoa, how much did you bet? You're here to work, that's great, I admire that I'm in paper milling in Detroit myself And let me tell you, that can put you in touch with some pretty special people But when I saw you, I said to myself, Mel, this is a lady with class, it's written all over It's written on the way she sits, the front of her face, the back of her legs when she walks Mel, before you do any more writing on me, I think you should know I'm engaged That's too bad, when are you getting married? Just as soon as this boat drops Julia, I need to talk to you for a minute Hi, excuse us, can I steal her away for a minute? Go right ahead, I don't blame you, she's a special lady She is, isn't she? Listen, I think we're in big trouble, did you see that guy Suzanne's with at the bar? He's probably the best looking guy on board I don't know what you mean, we're in big trouble, I don't recall putting my pinky ring out on the table I know that, but I thought that I was representing us all in trying to teach Suzanne a lesson What is this person's name? Mel Maybe he has a semi-decent friend I wouldn't count on it Hey you guys, what's going on? Everybody's got somebody but me, that's what's going on You married Joe, I wish you hadn't made that bet, did you see who Suzanne's talking to? Yes I saw it, I'm never gonna live it down Excuse me But if you're talking about that guy at the bar, he is no big deal I mean he's on every ship I go on, in fact I hate his guts Who's this? Mel You know it sort of sticks in your craw when guys like that with absolutely no sensitivity have women groveling at their feet, you know? And I'm the kind of guy they laugh at, yeah okay I wear too much jewelry, you know? And maybe I'm too tan And maybe I'm trying too hard to hold off my 50s by working out in the gym and getting myself the best toupee that money can buy Oh boy, you sure got your money's worth there, I couldn't even tell Well, good night, it's been a lovely evening I guess what I'm trying to say is Let them laugh as I walk through the big surf of life I like my tan I like my toupee And I know in here, those are two things they can never take away from me This is it, 2 a.m. and she's not even in She is so competitive She's just doing this to humiliate me Maybe she really likes this guy Oh come on, Suzanne never falls for anybody, she just wants to win Well you did okay, you met someone, that little guy you were talking to Howard? I don't even know him His nose started bleeding while I was talking to him Why are you so quiet down there, Julia? I was just trying to say my prayers What were you praying for? Charlene, do I have to tell you everything? I'm just curious What on earth is the matter now? This stupid dress, this is so typical It's just like her to hang this by my bed So it won't get wrinkled in the closet and I'm so little it won't bother me She does this kind of thing to me all the time Why don't you just take it down? Actually, this fascinates me These bra cups are huge It's kind of like this is the corral where Suzanne keeps her bosoms And I'm the hired hand who guards them while she's taking them out on a midnight ride Suzanne, where have you been? I cannot believe you stayed out all night Yeah, we were worried sick for only knee-reading by a shark I never thought a shark ate you Well, I was out dancing under the stars with Trevor And then we had a late supper and then watched the sun come up And sitting in the deck chairs Oh, it was wonderful You're just gloating because you know you're in Pinky Ring City What? A contest You just did it so you could win Oh, I don't care about that silly contest I'm in love Isn't this a little sudden? After all, you've only shared one sunrise I know I can't even believe it myself but then I've never known anyone like Trevor I mean, do you all know anything about him? No, only that his name is stupid And that everybody hates his guts Yes, well, whoever said that must just be jealous You see, he has to put up with the same kind of thing I do, you know, jealousy and the hate I just cannot believe how much we have in common You know, he told me that he takes an hour to an hour and a half to work on his hair every morning And he wasn't even ashamed I've never known a man like that I have Ted was like that It was like meeting a male version of me I mean, how could I help but love him? I guess this means you'll be taking him to the captain's dinner Better than that I might be taking him home Gee, I can't believe the price is for a half a grapefruit tea Gee, Rochester, what do you want for nothing? So, where's the rest of the troupe? Did someone get lucky last night? Well, actually, I wouldn't know Suzanne's sleeping in and my other friends are measuring the floor in the gift shop It needs new carpeting Yes, don't we all? Well, we're gonna go off to the pool Don't do anything we wouldn't do Yeah, I think I'll shove off too By the way, did you ever think about taking the Antarctic cruise? Here's very nice Why don't you take it? The climate would be perfect I mean, your clothes are all rubber See what I mean? A jerk That was very snotty But also kind of funny Yeah, I'm glad you liked it So, Suzanne's still sacked out, huh? Yeah, I guess you guys had a pretty swell night Yeah, not really Actually, I'm not even assigned to this table I just came over here to meet you Me? What for? Because I noticed you last night And I liked your hair And I liked your face And you've got a great little butt Thank you very much You're welcome I really don't think you should be talking to me that way I mean, you hardly know me I thought you and Suzanne were... Look, let's not talk about Suzanne You know, I wouldn't even have been with her Except that you seem interested in that little guy with a nosebleed Howard? You thought I liked Howard?
