Good evening, I'm David Stratton. Tonight a film from China called My Memories of Old Beijing. As the third presentation in our Asian cinema season. This is a nostalgic film told from the viewpoint of an old woman living far from home. And looking back with fondness on her childhood in Beijing many years ago. The entire film is seen through the viewpoint of little Yingzi. Played by Shen Ji. We see through her innocent and wondrous eyes the strange sights and sounds of the city. The camels coming in from the west. The ancient elaborate water pump. The old crumbling houses. And the people. Her best friend. A young woman who's supposed to be mad. Her grieving wetness. And a mysterious young man she meets. Many people, many incidents. And it all happened so long ago. But in this 1982 movie all these past events are brought to life again.
