Man against man to win a title. This time the lifters are competing not against each other but against the world records in their respective categories. It means of course that any of our competitors, the smallest or the largest, could win. I expect though that three of our lifters will be the main rivals for the title. They will be Krustev of Bulgaria, the world's strongest man. Also his teammate Nam Shalamanov, who's the only man in the world who can lift three times his own body weight. And they will be challenged by Romanian Niku Vlad. All three of those along with the other two Bulgarians, Latev and Vabanov, have been breaking world records all week in training. The most amazing thing is already they've nominated very, very heavy weights. That's right, the preliminary lift that the lifters nominated at the weigh-in earlier today has three of them starting within 10 kilo of the world record. Okay Michael, thank you for joining us on Nine Sport this afternoon. Now we'll see lots of world records broken here. To help you at home, let's have a look at the sort of weights and the sort of techniques they'll be using. This afternoon we'll see some very heavy weights lifted. Let's give you at home a guide to help you identify the weights. First the big green bumper plate. These weigh 45 kilograms each. The red plates, they come in at 25 kilograms. The blue ones, they represent 20 kilos. Now to the yellow, 15 kilos each. Finally the discs. The white are 5 and 10 kilograms and the smallest of them all, the black, are 1.25 and 2.5 kilograms. Now to the lifts. First the snatch. This is a one movement lift. Hands spread wide, palms facing down. The bar is pulled from the platform in a single continuous motion to the full extent of both arms above the head. There must be no break in the action. The second lift is the clean and jerk. This feat of speed and power is composed of two distinct movements. From the platform the bar is hoisted to the shoulders. A big spread of the legs, a mighty thrust over the head in one continuous motion. The clean and jerk is a two part sympathy of muscle and mind coordination. We talk about muscle and mind coordination. This is the area where the mind has to work. The muscles will work out on the centre stage, but that's the warm up room. Michael Noonan, a lot of tactics. Everything happens here. Yes there is. The lifters at the moment are completing their warm ups, ready to come out on the platform. You can see at the moment the Hungarian, completing his warm up for the snatch. He'll be out shortly. First up we expect to see Chinese Yi Ying. In the warm up room in a competition of this nature because they're not really lifting against another man, they're lifting against a world record. How important is the information fed out to the stage and back to the coaches of the attempts they should start with? Well there's a little different in this one. Normally there's a lot of tactics as to who goes first and who is pressurised into taking higher weights than they can cope with. In this competition the order is much more determined. The lifters are going to go more against the world record. So the order is predetermined. The coaches will be mainly concerned with pushing the lifter to their maximum. Weights are going on out the front now. We expect this competition to start very, very shortly. There they are, weights being loaded up on the bar now. At 120 kilos we expect He Ying Cheng to come out from China at 55.6 at bodyweight. And these fellows will be lifting enormous weights here this afternoon. We expect world records to tumble already in Melbourne throughout the week. They've been breaking world record after world record, unofficial of course, but we've seen some tremendous performances. Huge crowd here at the Sports and Entertainment Centre in Melbourne. A lot of interest in this particular tournament. I must say that if this was in Europe people would be buying tickets 12 months previously to get into this tournament. It's a very prestigious one Michael and held in high esteem all around the world. It is. This is the culmination of the whole year's weightlifting. The world championships determine the 10 best weightlifters in every category. This determines more than that the best lifter in all of weightlifting in the world. I'm really looking forward to a tremendously exciting day and hopefully quite a lot of world records. He Ying Cheng from China getting ready now as he gets the mind into action. He's going to attempt 120 kilos, the clock counting down to 40 before he makes his way to the stage. And here he comes out now. This will be a nice warm Australian welcome for the first time for the boy from China. He Ying Cheng comes out center stage, kicks off the 1986 World Cup. Chalks up now. A little bit of background Michael on this fellow. Well this lifter comes from Peking. He's a student there at the Physical Education College. His best snatch is 129 kilo. 129 kilos, he's best. He's attempting 120 first up gets set now. He Ying Cheng gets it up pretty easy. The boy from China, skies 120 to kick off the 86 World Cup. There's your lights, one, two and three. Alright, so fine lift. He Ying Cheng from China. He Ying Cheng from China, here he goes now as we go through that lift again. Plenty of power from the little man as he really throws the weight above the head. The leg's doing the job perfectly. Nice balance there. 67.5 kilo. And this is a very good technical lift. Tremendous acceleration there, extension. Very easy lift indeed to start the competition for He Ying. He Ying Cheng from China. His body weight is 55.6. Now we expect the Australian. Ronnie Laycock. There he is wearing the national colors. Green and gold. The Tasmanian Ronnie Laycock. And what a superb look to this man. He is the man closest to a world record in this country. He has been selected in the biggest company he's ever ever lifted in. The nerves are showing but Ronnie Laycock probably not in their class Michael but he'll give it everything he's got. It is. Ron really fights hard every way. This lift, the snatch, is not Ron's best lift. He's the Oceania champion in this category and he's really going to try hard to get as much into Canada's snatch and make it as easy as possible for him in the clean and jerk. 125 kilos on the bar and that's a pretty good start for Ronnie. It is. His best ever. The Oceania record is only 130 kilos. So within five kilos, his best ever and his first attempt obviously warmed up very well. And there he comes. Ronnie Laycock from Australia. He's set a stage and the crowd go up. What a moment for the Tasmanian. Chalking up now. And this fellow has amazed me how he never really starts well in a competition. No, he often tends to start very shakily. He doesn't have a lot of confidence in himself in the snatch but he gets better and better as time goes on. A few whiskers under the nose too since we've seen Ronnie Laycock comes to the bar now. 125 and the snatch. And his body weight is 67.3 kilos. The most important tournament he's ever lifted in. Ronnie Laycock from Australia now gets the bar up above the head and a beautiful lift from Ronnie Laycock as he holds it. And that's a great start from the Australian. And there's the lights. One, two and three. All white. That's the beauty. Oh, good start from Ronnie Laycock as the handle is bending back in the warm-up room now. Let's see it again. Had himself perfect position. Look at that plenty of confidence as he gets the bar straight over the head. Arms beautifully positioned. The legs do the job and he holds. 125. Very good technical lift from Ronnie. He's often very shaky at the start. He sets very well. Good stretch and a very easy lift. Just a little bit of shake there. Good lift. So a great start to this 86 World Cup. But here is the man. Here is the man around the world regarded as the best lift of this world has ever seen. Nam Shalimanov from Bulgaria. This man is only 4 feet 11 inches in height. He really could be riding a horse at any of our major, any of our major horse trading meetings. And this man is an absolute freak. Nam Shalimanov makes his first appearance here in Australia. Michael, what an amazing athlete he is. He's done everything in weightlifting in a few years. His lifts are absolutely incredible. Very hard to beat today. Body weight 59.9 Shalimanov. He has broken two world records in training earlier this week. Sets himself down. This pocket sized power pack from Bulgaria. Takes a lot of time. Gets the hands right. We expect him to break at least two world records today. Up it goes and out comes the roar of the strain and look at that. Easy. Easy for Shalimanov. Does an easy with a fast lift. Oh, I'm beauty at 140 and he's electric this fellow. He is so cool Shalimanov. A great lift and a great start for the 86 World Cup. He's won it twice. Soon again now. Look at this. So easy. There's the throw. The body just rose behind the head. Steadies himself briefly. An enormous weight. 7.5kg of the world record. Tremendous stretch. A very easy opener. He looks capable of a world record very soon. Well, already a great start to this tournament. And as the figures go up there Shalimanov 95% of the world record on his first attempt. So that's an amazing turnaround there. What a great start. Alexander Varbanov now from Bulgaria will also be coming out. Weights are being nominated inside. 150 on the clock at the moment as the weights are lowered down under the floor. 150. Alexander Varbanov. Can we tell us a little bit about this fellow? Well, Varbanov is 22 years old. He's been three times world champion in the 75kg category. This is not his best lift. He's much stronger in the clean and jerk. He's still within 15kg here of the world record. Okay, 15kg off the world record. 75kg class. Alexander Varbanov from Bulgaria. Center stage here in Melbourne, the Sports and Entertainment Center. All of these fellows are class of their own. Of course, lifting in their own nominated body weight. Varbanov comes in at 74.7kg. Gets himself set there. Out comes the roar and straight up over the head of 150. All of these lifters have started so well and they're doing it so well. One, two, three wide lights. Another good lift. The Bulgarians setting the pace here this afternoon. See it again. Just the way, the technique of these fellows. Straight away you see the body get hurled back as the arms go up. Stretched out correctly and there it is. Up above the head with a lot of ease. Very good lift too. Good stretch. His weight's in excess of the Australian record and look how easily he does it. Particulously easy lift for a first attempt. Back in the warm up room now. We have Ryōji Isioka. He's right from China. And this fellow comes here with a very, very, very big reputation from Japan. Ryōji Isioka. Chalks up now. His best total, 367.5. His best snatch, 165. That's right. That's the Asian record. Starting here, 152.5. A conservative start for him. Get himself in the competition. We don't expect him to be judged at the end in one of the three final place-getters, but he'll place very high. It's important that he get a good start here. Would he be nervous in this particular company? I guess he's used to this sort of competition. Well I think he's used to top level competition, but he's never been in a World Cup final before, so I'm sure the nerves are there. Maybe the reason the coaches have started him a little lower. Well, 152.5 in the snatch on the bar. His body weight 82 kilos. There it goes. No, the straight no. Puts it down. Karts Gaert. Started maybe just a little bit too heavy at 152.5 and didn't look fine. One, two, three. Red lights. No lift. But he'll be back. See it again. Didn't look quite set. There it is. Now he gets the bar above the head, but decides no, I can't go so quickly. Gets away from it. And Michael, I guess that's just the right thing to do in that situation. It is indeed. You don't want to get hit by the weight, but I think his weight's easily enough elevated. He's just a little nervous and rushing into the wrong position there. The weight up high enough, but not in the position to hold. Well, there we go. Back in the warm up now. You can see the sweat pouring off these fellows. It's quite hot here in Melbourne today. In fact, extremely hot. The last couple of days have been 31 degrees. A lot of heat. Trying to cool off the lifts down as the weights are getting pulled on. And this fellow, tell us a bit about him, Michael. Well, Laszlo is from Budapest. He's a Hungarian champion, silver medalist at the recent World Championships. Been a change of call. The Compay has just announced the weight has been changed. But actually going much higher. So, we'll have to see who the lift is going to be. Just explain that to us. He's called out a weight which was 152. And now he's bumped that up. Now, what's the idea of that? Is it really putting pressure on himself? It is too. I think that obviously he's warmed up very well. The coaches and judges that he's capable of a much higher start than originally planned. And going to go higher to try and get closer and closer to that world record. All right. Well, his best ever snatch is 175. So, it's a big start at 165, isn't it? It is indeed. Obviously, again, warming up well. Tremendous heat here in Melbourne. The Europeans have come out of a very cold winter. What's this coach saying to you now as he comes out? He'll be just telling you to take his time, get ready, don't rush. We've just seen the Japanese, I think, miss the weight through rushing. I'm daringly coaching him, I'm very sure. Laszlo Varshy now from Hungary. 24 years of age. Beautifully built weight, left rosy, beautiful body. It's a perm for the thing. It's set now. Varshy from Hungary. Up it goes and up. Throws it away, Varshy. Couldn't hold it at 165. So maybe that backfired that tactic. He bumped it up 10 kilos and couldn't hold it. That's right. It could well be a disaster. But I think he'll come back well on the next attempt. I think, again, suffering a bit from nerves. Let's go through that lifting guy. And he had all the determination on the face. Up it went above the head, but no, he was never going to lift it. Quickly kicked away from it. This one, again, going up very well. Good stretch. But the lifter going backwards a bit. Unable to hold the weight. Well, a dramatic start to the 86 World Cup already. We've had Ying Cheng from China lifting 120, of course, smaller body weights. From Bulgaria, the man chipped to take this title, has lifted 140 in the snatch. Ronnie Lakecock, the Australian, a good start with 125. Varshy has dropped 150. So at the moment, everything looking pretty interesting here and very, very tense. Back in the warm-up room now. The final instructions coming through, Michael. Coach Ivan Abadiev there, the greatest coach in the world, giving a few last-minute instructions to Zlathev. Zlathev's the most experienced man in this competition. He's been lifting since 1970. Many times world champion, world record holder. Well, it's amazing. If you look at the World Cup placings, 85 he was second, 84 second, 83 was fourth, 82 fourth, 81 fifth. So he's been there a long time. He has indeed. Tremendous experience. 170 on the bar for Zlathev. Taking plenty of time, gets himself set. Bulgaria, amazing country for weightlifters. They've produced so many of the world champions and we're seeing the greatest of them here. Live out of Melbourne and up it goes. Zlathev, and he does it easy too. And once he puts her up, and that's a great start from him. Oh boy, it's in his mind. Gere to really forcing the pace here this afternoon. Powerfully built man and did it with a lot of ease. Sit again, here it is, Zlathev from Bulgaria now with 170s. Froze it up with so much ease, those big legs pumping and holds it. You can see the strain on the face. As in as one of the fastest weightlifters in the world. You see there's a tremendous speed here. Full, stretches up high and holds the weight. A very easy lift. A good start for him. Putting him into a good position. Okay, so we'll take a break from the Melbourne entertainment sports centre, be back shortly with the 1986 World Weightlifting Cup. There we go. The boy from China just coming out again. Ying Chong for his second attempt at 130. Couldn't get it in the air though, dropped it. So he's been successful on one of his two attempts at 120, but putting 130 down here at the entertainment centre in Melbourne, the Sports Centre. Ying Chong. Michael, it all went wrong for him here. Yes, he took a big jump, a 10 kilo jump, and I think the bigger jump than normal was just throwing him off a little bit. Ronnie Laycock should be out for Australia next, so he'll get a big roar from here, and that lift from the Chinese fellow will really spur Laycock on the bigger things. Ronnie Laycock with 130 on the bar. He's already been successful with 125. So this is well above his test. Michael, as it comes out now. Coming out now will equal the Oceania record. Okay, this will equal the Oceania record for Ronnie Laycock. 130 on the bar, his second attempt in the snatch. Each of the lifters have three attempts in the snatch, three attempts in the clean and jerk. Their totals are then combined, and that's the total weight they'll lift here this afternoon. The boy from Australia, in the biggest company he's ever lifted in, sets himself very, very accomplished. Was invited into this tournament because he is the man closest to a world record in this country. What an honour. And he really has so far started very, very well. Here he goes, 130. Let's see, right up with him. The boy from Australia, up it goes. No, he can't do it, Ronnie Laycock. He'll come back though. That's not unusual. He does that in a tournament. He'll get stronger and come back, I'm sure of that. Well, he'd be disappointed. He'd be disappointed with that, but still he's a fighter, this fellow. I've seen him lift too many times. He puts him down, he comes back. There it was. Just got out of it quickly. Yes, Ron has a habit of starting too quickly, and that's what he did here. Rushed the start and lost balance. Weight up easily. I think he can get it on the next attempt though. Well, Nam Shalamanov now from Bulgaria coming out. He's going to attempt a world record so early in this competition. Now, Michael, is that unusual? No, not for Shalamanov. He so dominates the world that very often he tries to world records on his second attempt. He's got a lift, he's getting three attempts. Shalamanov here going world record on his second attempt. 147.5 is the world record and we have 148 on the bar. So 147.5 the world record, 0.5 higher. For Shambalov, he's going to go for a world record, the second attempt in this competition in the snatch. So, big start. Shalamanov. The hot tip to take it out. An amazing fellow. When you look at the size of this man to the size of the weights that he skies, three times his own body weight. Amazing. Respected right throughout the world. Gets himself set as he comes out to the stage and this could be a new world record, the first we hope of many this afternoon. Nam Shalamanov now from Bulgaria gets set. Just 19 years of age. A student soldier at home. Tough as teak this little fellow. Been watching him training throughout the week. He gets on his own and gets his mind going. Total concentration all the time. Shuts out everything around him. And there he is going through the lift in his mind now. It's a mind game. The muscles will follow the mind as he sets himself now. Shalamanov from Bulgaria. 19 years of age. Two World Cup champions. Championships I should say. The old record or the current record stands at 147.5, 148 on the bar. Everybody set now. Humps himself up. Gets set and here it goes. There goes the roar and he can't do it. Bangs the head. Not happy. Bulgaria not happy but he'll be back for another attempt. Three red lights, same old lift. Hits the curtain as he goes out. Not at all happy. Back in the warm up room. Well Michael what went wrong there? He didn't even look set. Here it is again. Just didn't set his grip properly and pulled back at the start. Well here it is again. You can see he was all pumped up. He had the mind working but as Michael said the grip just wasn't right and he wasn't going to take any chances and very quickly got away from it. But he'll come back this fellow. He is so good. Varbanov now. Alexander Varbanov from Bulgaria. No it's not that's the... Ayose. Ayoseyaka is coming out. Ayoseyaka is out on centre stage now from Japan. On the bar. 152.5 on the bar. 152.5 on the bar which he put down in his first attempt. The coach there looking very intent. Would be disappointed that he put his first one down. Comes to the bar now. 152.5 has put it down in his first attempt. This is the snatch. His body weight 82 kilos. It's set. Hands well paced. Looks a lot better set this time. And up it goes. The strain is there but no he pats the bar. And look at the coach. They smile. It was probably too big a weight for him. But he'll have another attempt as yet. He's put two down. Back up in the warm up room. There's a little bit of talking going on now. But he'll come back and have another attempt. He must be successful with his next lift though. Here it is again. Now he looked a lot more confident this time. He looked like he was set. Gets the weight above the head. The squat looked good but there was no way he was going to go and he slowly just said don't get out of it. And we'll leave it alone. I think he's just suffering from tension here. I said the first time he lifted in the competition the weight doesn't look too hard. Comes up very high but his body is never in the correct position to hold the weight. Alexander Vabanov. 74.7 kilograms in the body weight from Bulgaria. Now getting the big rev up in the warm up room and they do it with a lot of professionalism these fellows. 155 on the bar. His second attempt. Lifted 150. And he did it with a lot of ease in the first attempt. Yes Vabanov should get this pretty easily. His best ever done a few weeks ago at the World Championships. 165 kilos. Is it amazing we've had four failures so far in this competition Michael? No I think from the lesser lifters they're feeling a tremendous pressure here. They're trying to push every gram up they can to get them as high as possible in the placings. Vabanov from Bulgaria now. 155 on the bar has lifted 150 and would be probably inspired by the fact that his teammate has dropped a weight he thought he would lift. Sets himself. 22 years of age. Comes from the same place as Krastev in Sofia in Bulgaria. Army officer is his occupation. Who the heck would argue if he told you to do a bit of drill training. Here he goes down as he throws up. Vabanov from Bulgaria strong. He looked right. There it goes the big roar that came out and straight away over the head. Beautiful technique. You see the body back or the back is straight and the legs drive it up. Well done. The Bulgarians use a tremendous jolt start. It's a tremendous acceleration here at the start of the pool of Vabanov. Putting him in a very close position now to Shalamanov. The next lifter out now we can see getting a towel down he's having a lot of trouble with the heat. The next lifter is the Hungarian Lazlo Bashi. 24 years old from Budapest Hungarian champion and silver medalist at the World Championship this year. Getting ready now taking his time. As a coach has wiped a lot of the sweat away. He's a bronze medalist at the World Championships in 86 and in 1983. Lazlo Bashi he's from Hungary. Unsuccessful with his first attempt here. This one looks a lot better. Yes. He's come back well and that's the class of these fellows Michael. That is indeed Bashi's had a lot of experience at World Championships but never before at the World Cup. But the talent shows through to the end. Tremendous lift there. Well a nice comeback and he gets a pat on the shoulder for his work there. And look at this the determination written all over his face he gets it over the head and everything just works properly. The legs the arms stands there long enough to get the three white lights and that's a good lift. It is indeed a very good lift there. An actual recovery after that first miss. Very smoothly executed snatch. Lifting him up into a very good position in the competition. Back in the warm up room now the action is starting to hot up. Yes we see as in his life there. The world champion in the 82 kilo calorie for a number of years. Gold medalist in 1980. Tremendous experience he's hoping to go well today because he's going to retire after this tournament. All right he's his best snatch is 180 and that's what he has on the bar. So he's going after a personal best here so that's a good start. And he is going to retire after this tournament so I'm sure he would like to go out on a big note. Yes I know he does very much. He wants to break a world record snatch clean and jerk and the total. Clean and jerk world record holder but he doesn't hold the title at the moment. He called it a few weeks ago hoping to break at the day. As in slatter his age 26 years of age again his place of residence is Sofia in Bulgaria. So there's plenty of talent comes out of that particular place. Started lifting in 1970. Best total 405 the best snatch 180 and that's what he's after right now. 180 on the bar. Stato from Bulgaria after a personal best taking plenty of time as he sets himself over the bar. There it goes there goes the roll. Great left from. Said again talk us through this one Michael fantastic of tremendous lift equal to his best within two and a half kilo the world record. He's in a tremendous fight for them like they're there showing the experience of his 20 years in weightlifting. And there it is that gets up his personal best will be back at the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Center shortly with more World Cup weightlifting. Seven o'clock Monday. Hey you chung for his third attempt in the snatch at 130 he put it down on the second was successful with 120. He's looking for an Asian record of one twenty nine he'll break it if you get it up. Well it's a brave attempt he tried everything he could to take that Asian record didn't do it. Went up a kilo to try and break it for the pretty brave attempt Michael. Yes it is indeed it's not only an Asian record but it's within three kilos of the world record. Back in the warm up room disappointed but there it is talk us through that one. Well I think he's did everything right he stretched as high as he possibly could but just not quite high enough. It's just a few centimeters short of the success. Weights are being changed up here as we see the man dropping 130 and we would be very disappointed. He tried to get an Asian record gave it the best he could. Ronnie Lake off the Australian now the World Cup. What a moment for him already his year one twenty five years dropped 130 has 130 on the bar now. He's best ever in the snatch is one thirty two five. He's very very strong in the final jerk as he comes out now. Yes one person to the clinic jerk at one thirty two five he did while weighing in the seventy five kilo category. This will be equal to his best ever in this category if you can get it. OK Ronnie Lake off the Tasmanian hard man. I've seen he come back so many times you put them down fight his way back. His family are in the hall of flown up from Tasmania to share this moment with him. And everybody right around Australia right behind the man who is testing the best 130 on the bar. Body weight of sixty seven point three kilos the Australian. There goes the roaring gets above the head that can't put it down bad luck for Blake off. But he's professional he goes off the stage straight away he'll come back with a clean and jerk. Let's hope he's strong look at the look on his face he's very very very disappointed. And it just didn't look right for him. But here's the man. Raycock there just again as usual how rushing the start. Probably Ronnie doesn't have confidence in the snatch in the clean and jerk he's much better. Shalamanov now coming out at one forty eight one forty eight kilos on the bar the world record of course is one forty seven five. Now he's put it down once. Put it down once Shalamanov coming out one forty eight on the bar this could be a new world record one forty seven five the standing world record. Loosening him up. Were you surprised he dropped this. Yes I was he's had tremendous experience he just seemed to rush the start on the previous one didn't really set his grip properly was immediately wrong. Let's go just through some of these form the World Cup winner in eighty four eighty five world champion eighty five and eighty six world champion silver medalist eighty three in the 56 kilogram class. Junior world champion and so it goes on. There is nothing in the sport this man hasn't achieved. Four foot eleven inches in height. Just a powerhouse. Nam Shalamanov from Bulgaria. Very very astute and very proud of the fact that he's probably the strongest man in the world for his size. We've had him standing next to Krashtev for the week and he says now I'm fine the way I am. Very well conducted at the functions that have been held in Melbourne and he has not turned anyone away he's been signing autographs going to functions a lot of pressure on this man. OK this could be a new world record sets himself a lot of time this time over the lift sucks up the air. Here we go. Can the little man do it. He did it so well he said he's often got it right. Look at copper. The man that organized it. As I go back into the warm up room that is a great start. That's the start he wanted and that's the first of two he's looking for. Shaking their hands but say it again. This is history here in Australia out came the raw. Straight away one forty eight he had it over the head now look at the muscles and the physique and everything working overtime as he skies up a new world record that was sensational. Great lift there. Tremendous extension. Very very strong young fellow. Fighting hard to hold the white there the world record. Well held very happy with it after that previous miss. He wants to win the World Cup for three years in a row. No one's ever done that before. Well on track now. Amazing to note there as he put the white down his foot actually came off the ground. Yeah I think he's just so much power into this one after the previous minute. Look at the look on his face. Marbles man this fellow is. One forty eight kilograms a new world record in the snatch and there's the man that did it. He's a tiny little man but he has got the heart of a lion. Tough as take. What a great thrill it is to have him in Australia. Oji Issiaka coming out from Japan now and boy this fellow has had a bad start he's put down one fifty two five on two occasions now has one fifty seven five. Sitting up for him. So a big effort if he can do this. Now he must lift this to stay in contention. We have to. This is all three down of the competition all together. No hope of fighting and it's a terrific risk they're talking this too. And yet he's increasing to a higher weight with the third. I think the other team went up quite easily is capable of this but he's got to do everything right. Ryoji Issiaka from Japan. After an Asian record one sixty five. His best title three sixty seven five. But this is pretty gutsy. Asian Games gold medalist in eighty six junior world championships in eighty two. That was in sixty two the juniors now that goes well he's out. That's it finished. Yes indeed it is he's out of the competition. He can continue though into clean and jerk and I'm sure he will. The rules allow you if you're zero in the snatch to continue into clean and jerk but he can't get a place in the competition now. Well the highs and lows of top class sports you've seen it all we've just had a world record and now we've had a fellow out. Yes it's a shame. Very strong but inexperienced quite young and I think the pressures just got to him. Yeah the weight coming up again quite easily but him leaning back the whole way and never capable of holding it in the correct position to recover. They are such a polite nation even when they fail they seem to be happy. Yes it's very hard to tell when they're upset they're always smiling even when they miss like that. Alexander Varbinoff in the warm up room now 150 155 he's been successful with. Now that's 92 percent of the world record we might get you to explain that Michael for the people at home now what does that mean. Well each of the lifters here as I said from the beginning going up the world record. Shalamanov has already broken the world records he's 101 percent of his world record and he's different in his body weight category the 60 kilo class. Varbinoff trying to move up to 94 percent I think of the world record here moving higher in the placings. Chalking up now making sure there's plenty of chalk on the hands 160 on the bar. Has been successful this afternoon with some pretty easy lifts at 150 and 155 and look that way. This is his third and final lift in the snatch of course then they'll come out and have three lifts in the clean and jerk and their combined totals will be the weight lifted here this afternoon. But each division separate and they're chasing records in each on each occasion 160. Does look good and look strong look comfortable here. I spread out the hands and making sure that everything's right. Critical at every little thing the fingers the legs the stance the balance of the body is exactly right. Looking to the heavens for maybe a bit of help and there it goes but can't do it this time was successful with 150 and 155 but puts down 160. And comes off the stage too happy looking at the finger too he may have just yes he is playing with a hand there he's looking strikes to the coach the coaches never mind. You'll come back now here's the left again he looks at he spent plenty of time getting himself ready but at no stage was he going to throw it up so he quickly put it down. It's well Alexander here doing most things right just at the top throws away and loses balance is not the best in this lift. He's under that lift to get in higher in the World Cup rankings there's a Hungarian again getting towel down by she's having trouble with the heat this fellow last low Bozzi 24 years of age from Hungary. His best title is 385 the best matches 175 and Bozzi has lifted 165 on his second attempt 170 on the bar 170 on the bar for Bozzi. So he started to force the place a little now beautifully proportioned body this fellow is the best physique of any other competitors in the competition. Okay last low Bozzi from Hungary now sets himself and you can see the strain but no can't do it it kicks out and he could tell then straight away just kicked out he acknowledges the crowd. But some of these fellows must be very disappointed because they've been lifting so well in training they have been or she's been having trouble with the heat and the Hungarians were telling me two days ago that it's 10 degrees below zero in Budapest at the moment. White going up quite easily but pulling back a bit the problem he's been having in training also see the stretch of the bar but the bar in front of the body and it forces the body backwards. Right back in the warm up room now and this is where all the action is you can see in the background there as he goes through the motions here now. Zlatov now is coming out. The current world record 182.5 set up a couple of years ago by Soviet lifter Yurik Vardonyan. Zlatov and Vardonyan have been rivals for years and Zlatov wants his last contest to take all the world records off Vardonyan. He's in Zlatov age 26 from Bulgaria. Now some of his past records world champion 86 and 82 European champion 1980 in the 75 kilogram class also 82 84 and 85 Olympic gold medalist in 1980s and 1980 at the 75 kilogram class has set 10 senior world records World Cup placings in 85 second 84 was second 83 fourth. So this fellow has done it all as he comes out now he's in Zlatov and he's going to attempt a world record in the snatch at 183. And Shala Manov has been successful in his third attempt so far so a lot of pressure now and Zlatov he gets himself organized and this could be the second world record set here this afternoon we expect quite a number of them to attempt world records only a little disappointed at some of the performances earlier but the pressures on this man now his final tournament. And there it goes he's going to do it and that's the second world record to Zlatov and the big man goes on and he is so happy that is his final appearance in the snatch in competition and he set a world record and did it easy. Oh he did it so easy good stuff these Bulgarians are really showing us what weightlifting is all about. Look at that coaches look at the emotion this is what jump level sports all about. Oh great stuff this from the Bulgarians and see it again. Now here it is, here it is, Michael look at this the technique fantastic it is superb hasn't been lifting for 16 years and his last competition I know he wanted to go out with that world record. He wants to break the other ones as well so I'd be very happy with this start. Well fantastic emotion here there it is one two three white lights indicating a great lift and a world record. Well there he is the man that set the second world record you'll see more of it here live on Nines Widewell of Sports when we return to the Sports and Entertainment Center in Melbourne for the 86th Weightlifting World Cup. Down, turn it around. There is nothing like a crown for picking it up and putting it down. Place it here or take it there. Low to the ground or high in the air. Hop on the stack won't be numb if you want it off the ground. There is nothing like a crown for picking it up and putting it down. There is nothing like a full crown. George. Stay in touch with the America's Cup through National Nine News and highlights nightly online. And welcome back to the Sports and Entertainment Center here in Melbourne. A fantastic afternoon. Two world records already being set and we're going to see Nam Shalabanov now. The first of the world records set here in the snatch. A fantastic lift and there it goes. History made here in Australia at the Entertainment and Sports Center and this crowd cannot believe the power they're seeing here. And his latter with his record attempt also in the snatch, a fantastic performance also. He will be retiring from competition after this particular World Cup and there's the emotion of another world record. We're seeing now here the South Korean Lee Min-woo, current Asian champion, has high hopes in the career of him obtaining a medal in the 1988 Olympic Games. Starting in the snatch, 155 kilo. His best, 172.5 kilo so it should be an easy start for Lee. Well of course the bigger men now and the weights are starting to get bigger too and these fellows, how much international experience do they have? Well Lee is very inexperienced. He only started weightlifting in 1980. The least experience of all. Very rapid ride though. Lee Min-woo, not a bad handle. And these fellows of course, traveling all around Europe right throughout the months over there, going through a lot of tournaments to qualify to be here for this World Cup, Michael. Yes, there have been 12 qualifying tournaments to achieve a place in the finals. Lee Min-woo here has his chance of placing well up in the top 10 I think and the South Koreans hope that he can make it to the 1988 Olympic Games for a medal. Nice moment there for Lee Min-woo as he faced the curtain. He went away from the crowd and he came back and bowed. So the emotion of this event captured by this fellow from Korea, the Republic of Korea. Their snatch is 172.5 so he's starting with a pretty big lift at 155. Asian Games gold medalist in 86, the World Junior Championship 85. That's the silver medal. World Championship seventh place in 85. An Asian champion for 85 and up it goes but no, he puts it down. And by gee, that surprises me a little bit because when you look at 172.5 as his best lift and starting at 155. Yes, I thought it would go up very easily but I think a lot of these less experienced lifters are suffering from the pressure here. So look at the lift. Going up strongly, good stretch but pulling back a little bit and losing balance. This is what we've seen with a couple of other lifters. Mainly I think the result of pressure. Now where do they go wrong here? I mean everything looked good. His body seemed to be balanced but he knew straight away he couldn't get it up. Well I think they get halfway through and they tell themselves in their mind that's it, I've got it and they haven't quite. It's very important for the lifter to extend to the maximum possible. Back into the warm up room as the weights are getting bigger and so are the lifter. This is Manfred Nelinga. Now I spent some time at a shopping centre with Nelinga the other day and I was very, very impressed with this fellow. He really loves Australia, he has a great time out here. He's loved the climate, he likes the way that he's been treated by people in this country. And he's determined to do it well and do it pretty quickly here this afternoon. Nelinga, 137.9 his body weight. He has 167.5 on the bar and look at the size of the legs on this fellow. Half and puff and gets the half and puff going as the big men come out there. 167.5. The first of his attempts, the big German. Manfred Nelinga. Taking the time, the mind really going through the lift now as the air getting sucked up. Huge legs on this fellow and very broad across the back and up it goes. There it goes, 167.5. The German steps, I'm in this competition, thank you very much. Another good one as he goes off and there it is, one, two, three white lights. We'll be back shortly at the Sports and Entertainment Centre for the 1986 World Cup. Music. Sunday night of the movies. History being made for this sport in Australia. Live telecast of a tournament that's regarded the highest regard all around Europe. In fact all around the world. These fellows, the 13 best lifters in the world have been working all year to be here in Australia for this World Cup. Now we're looking at Norberto Oberberger. He's an Italian. He's 26 years of age. Making his first appearance in Australia. He started lifting in 1976 and he looks pretty fit. He does indeed. The Italians have got high hopes for him for the future. 1984 Olympic gold medallist. Gets himself set now. His first of the three snatch attempts that he'll make. 175 on the bar for the Italian. And there it goes and it looks good too. He holds it pretty easy. That's a good start for the Italian. He'd be pretty happy with that. Norberto Oberberger. One, two, three wide lights. Say it's a good one. Well he certainly came out with a lot of confidence and he attacked it that way. There's the weight there. A beautiful body action as he just flung it up. Paused that brief second to get the balance. And then drove it with the legs above the head. So that looked good to me. And he could be a pretty exciting boy this afternoon. I think so. I think he's going to place very high. Very easy lift. Little bit of problem here at the bottom. Bit of balance. But he sat there well and held it. A good start indeed. From Romania now we have Nikku Vlad. This is a fellow that you expect very high things of this afternoon. I do indeed. I think he could be the challenger to the Bulgarian during the week. He's already snatched 200 kilo. A world record in training. Starting here in 190 kilo. Just 10 kilo off that world record. 10 kilos off. He gets plenty of chalk on the hands. World champion in 86. World championship bronze medalist, 85. And he has done most of the things. There he is, loosening the fingers up. Getting the grip right now. He's a prowler. Got the mind working, nods to the crowd. Head back and going all through the motions here. Nikku Vlad from Romania. 23 years of age. His occupation is a mechanic. And this afternoon he has to do a few repairs on the world championship records as he gets set. There it goes. Over the back of the head for Vlad. Not a good start but these fellows are so experienced. They'll go back, they settle down and they come back Michael. They do indeed. It's a pretty easy lift there but it just seemed to take it a little bit too easily. See here the weight come up very high. And I think he just sort of relaxed it too soon there. He very disappointed in himself there. He's in a good stretch. Just the last second he hesitated and threw his head forward. Now there's the man, the world's strongest man, Antonio Krastev. Was seen at the Hawthorne Centre earlier this year. And he was absolutely magnificent. We know in Australia how good and how big Dean Lucan is. Now have a look at the size of this man. He's got legs like tree trunks as the crowd here really start to acknowledge this man. 110 kilograms plus, a super heavyweight. World champion in 85 and 86, European champion in 86, junior world champion in 81 has set two senior world records. Has a sense of humor this man too. Look at the legs on him. He's big. I said to him through the week he has a big lump on his arm and I said what happened? He said I swallowed a watch when I was a youngster. He has a sense of humor the boy. There it is. There's the lump. As far as we know that's a watch ticking away. But there's plenty ticking away under that big chest. He's a proud man. A very, very proud man. He's a little bit annoyed at the publicity that Shalaminov gets. He figures he lifts the biggest weights and he should get the biggest round of applause. It doesn't always happen. So there's a lot of rivalry between him. Sets himself down. Antonio Krustev from Bulgaria. Plenty of tension and up it goes. 195. The big boy starts with the power. He's a character and we're going to see a lot more out of him this afternoon. Let me tell you. One, two, three white lights go up as he comes off. Slow talk and slow walk and big Antonio Krustev. Here we see it now as he looks, you can see the eyes. They say I've got this now. The muscles start to follow the beautiful drive off the legs. There it is as he skies it. Antonio Krustev. Bulgarians like to get a very easy start in and you'll see here Krustev starting very easily. The weight looks well within his capability. He's 20 kilo off the world record. I expect him to take a big jump from second attempt. Okay the big boys are in action now and we'll be back shortly for the 86 World Cup of weightlifting here at the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Centre. Welcome back to the 1986 Weightlifting World Cup Championships here at the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Centre. There's the line up of lifters that we've seen right throughout the afternoon here. There's been two world records set already and we expect a lot more to happen yet. The action's just starting to heat up. Manfred Nelinger from Germany. Probably didn't have the start that he would have liked but his best ever in the snatch is 185. And we're looking at 172 that's been set on the bar. Big German comes out there. Very hot here. They can't, they're not used to the heat. And it's been around about 31, 32 degrees in Melbourne right throughout the week while they've been training. And it has put a bit of pressure on them. They've been losing body weight too. Yes, the big guys have lost a lot. I know Krushev has lost about 12 kilo of body weight in the last week. The Bulgarians seem to be adapting well. Some of the others not so well. It's just Nelinger. A very, very nice young man this fellow. Just 26 years of age. Very popular amongst the lifters and he's made a big impact here in Melbourne too with his appearances around town. Impeccable manners and a nature that really doesn't belie what is under his muscles. Because he's plenty big and plenty strong and plenty tough. 172.5 on the bar. His second attempt in the snatch. 167 he got up. No, can't do it this time. And look at it on his face. Ripped all over his face. Why? He says, Hal, what went wrong? And there's the three red lights that indicate no lift. Well he would not have been happy with that because he came out with a lot of confidence on the face. He lifted well so early. Look at him shaking his head as he goes back inside. Well I think setting well. Stretch. Not quite high enough. Technically well except for that final stretch. Once again you see the final extension of the shoulder is not there. That's needed to hold the weight overhead. And he knows it too. Anton Varyanac now this fellow from Czechoslovakia is the oldest man in the competition. Yes he's 35 years old. He didn't take up weightlifting until he was 24. These days it's usual to start when you're about 12. 172.5 second attempt for the snatch. Varyanac had already put down that weight in an earlier attempt. 172.5. So he wanted to lift this. The oldest man in the competition at 35. I think there'd be plenty of people around Australia who would be like to be as fit as this man at 35. And up it goes. He'll hold at this time. That's a nice comeback. Varyanac comes back. He'll not sit and lift the Czechoslovakian. That all put a smile on his face as he continues now in his chase for this 1996 World Cup. Three white lights indicate a good one. That's an explosive lift here. He's a tremendously powerful lifter. Occasionally a bit ragged I guess because of his late start in the sport. A very explosive snatch. Yes, it's a great thing to be able to come back the way they do. He's put a smaller weight down or the same weight down earlier. He came back now. He looked good there. And the way that he balanced himself, Michael, I thought was fairly intelligent too. It was. A lot of inexperienced lifters try to get up very quickly. You see these champions sit down there and maintain their balance. He's in the warm up room now. The leg's getting a bit of a massage from this man, Oberberger. Yes, coach Pignati. He's a competitor here in Melbourne. Olympics in 1956. He's a lifter ready. Is that right? He was here in 1956 in the Olympics. He was indeed. Pignati's been a Tatin national coach for 30 years. I'm very proud of Oberberger. He's a big boy. He's 26 years of age. 180 kilograms. On the bar. There's the coach. The look. 30 years of coaching. By G, you would have seen so many weights, so many lifters, so many heartbreaks and so many highs in that time. Alberto Oberberger. Look at there. There's the lift now. There's the lift of the man out on stage. The coach looking from the wings as his boy goes through the motions. He doesn't do it the way he would have liked to. The coach, well, he turns around. He's got to psych him up now as he waits for the lifter to come in. Look, there's the smile. That's amazing. The face went sour, but the smile came back when his boy came into the room. Some strong words, though, exchanged between coach and lifter there. Bar going up very easily, but Alberto rushing in the critical phase there at the end of the lift. Pignati would be very disappointed in missing that weight. It's amazing how they know, too. I mean, look at that now. There it goes. The action looks good there, but straight away he knew he couldn't do it. Yes. A lot of experience. This man, Nikku Vlad, has not started the way that he would have hoped. He is a person that everybody has been expecting some huge things out of. One-ninety he's put down. He's going for one-ninety again as he comes out. Again a pretty popular young fellow around the other lifters I've noticed. He is. He's very gregarious, very friendly with all of the lifters. And he'll be disappointed. He'll have to come back strongly on this to give him a chance of getting up with the Bulgarians. Okay, pressure on. Nikku Vlad. Romania. It's a single. I guess the mechanic is a motor mechanic. He wouldn't need any jacks to lift the cars. He'd just do it himself. And there it goes. One-ninety. One-ninety will do it this time. Vlad comes back into the competition with a lot of dignity. Oh, he just held it there and just eased it up. Just eased it up and said, I'm back in this competition. Free whites. Well, a lot of dignity and style about that lift. He went down and set himself and did it so easy. Just watch this now. He got himself set. It came over his head. Now there it is. And he just paused there and just sort of very gently came up for a great lift. Michael, had a lot of class in that one. It is indeed a beautiful style, very easy lift. He relieved after missing that first attempt. Antonio Krustov is going now for two oh five. Two oh five, a big weight for a big man. Yes, it's within ten kilo of the world record. Krustov taking a ten kilo jump from his successful first attempt at one ninety five. OK, out he comes this man. He's got a lot of class about him. Antonio Krustov from Bulgaria. Second attempt, two oh five on the bar. The size of the man. Look at the legs on him. Tree trunks. Looks at the bar, snarls at the bar. He knows the pressures on him. He wants a world record this afternoon. His teammates have lifted so well here. OK, we'll see the power happen. The chalk on the hands. That's what it's there for. Make sure that grippers right enormous weight. Two oh five on the bar. Hands are taped, everything carefully done, the supports on the knees. Now watch the eyes. Just feels the weight. Antonio Krustov from Bulgaria. Here it goes. Two oh five. Does it easy? Krustov does it easy. Up it goes and he says, I'll chase this world cup. He's put the pressure back down on Chayvalov. The crowd loved the big man. Look at the smile on his face. He's as happy as Larry. Here he is, the big man now. As he comes up, puts it over the head and those big legs do the rest of the work, Michael. He looks in fine form. He does. He looks capable of a world record too. All of these Bulgarians have been in fantastic shape. Confirming their training form. Well, he's about the only man I've ever seen that'll have spaghetti, bacon and eggs and Coca-Cola for breakfast. But it doesn't matter what he eats if he can lift like that. We'll be back shortly for the 1986 World Cup out of Melbourne. These pommies have got our ashes. There'll be some spiffing clashes. We're hunting lions this summer, yes indeed. We've never had a sharper looking bunch. I fear we could be headed for a crunch. If I bring that trophy with ya, there's a lesson we're gonna give ya. This summer's gonna really pack a punch. Live from Adelaide, the third test commences 11.20 Friday morning on Mines Wide World of Sports. He was successful earlier today with 167.5, put down 172.5, and that's the weight he has on the bar now for the third attempt. Now, can this man come back in the other division of this, the clean and jerk? Oh, I think he can. He was the gold medalist at the World Championships in the clean and jerk this year. He beat Krustev. Isn't that clean and jerk? Well, beat Krustev, sir. Funny going for him. Nolingo as he sets up with 172.5 on the bar. Third attempt. His snatch. His final snatch for the day. He'll come back with three clean and jerks and then the total weights put together. Very deliberate. It's the air going in. Pumping himself up. They explode, these fellows. Big weight. It's 172.5 on the bar. Here it goes. Up, up. No, can't do it. Puts it down. And look at it. Written all over his face. Very, very, very disappointed. He's lifted. Well, I thought he lifted pretty well through the work. He seemed to be doing it easier, but he's not having much success today as he puts 172.5 down. And look at the coach. Through the towel into. He knows it's not that good. Yes, it's a poor snatch. Technically rushed badly, pulling back on the bar. Very disappointed with himself because he knows he's strong enough for the weight. Yeah, it must break their hearts to know they've lifted that weight before and here they are when they've got to lift it and can't. Yeah, it's just a pressure situation, I think. It just gets to the lifters. Back in the warm-up room now as the big men prowl. Coaches wiping and doing all sorts of things as a... Boraniak is here. Anton Boraniak, the Czechoslovakian, the oldest man in the competition at 35. A great character, this fellow. Yes, he is. A very friendly fellow. Started very late in weightlifting. He was 24 years old. Had a good career. A couple of bronze medals at world championships. Well, he gets a nice round of applause as he comes out. 180 on the bar. 172.5 he put down. He was successful with 172.5 but he's second lifted and has 180 on the bar now. Which is 80% of the world record, his success... as he gets set. This sport in Europe, of course, is amazing and getting very big in Australia too since 1982... when our lifters did so well in the Commonwealth Games and have really dominated the Commonwealth sports in that area since then. Yes, we were very proud this year to win the Commonwealth Games once again. 35-year-old Czechoslovakian, Anton. He can't get it up this time though. He says no. So his best lift in the snatch is 172.5 as he puts 180 down. And look at the expressions on the faces. You're seeing this for the first time in Australia... as these champion people come off the stage. These lifters go through all that agony out there and then they're met by their coach. Anton lifting the weight up high enough there. Sitting back like a lot of the lifters today. I think maybe they're affected by the heat a little bit. Tried very, very, very hard to do it up but they all look good today but unfortunately no. The weight too hard today and well, he said the lot. Just through his eyes is Oberberger is out center stage now. Alberto Oberberger from Italy. 26 years of age. He's married, has a little daughter. And I believe a very dedicated family man too as he gets set up. They're taking a long time to get set this afternoon. Does that surprise you a little? A little but it's very hot. No he can't do it and he's really lifted sort of hot and cold throughout the week Michael. Yes he's had some tremendous days and some very poor days. He'll be disappointed so far. He was holding the finger when he came in after the first lift there and the coach obviously not very happy. But I don't think his hands are that right either because every time he's come off now he's had trouble with those hands. Yes he could have torn a callus. It can happen with these huge weights that they ripped the calluses loose. I think looking at the replay that's what happened. Yes well you can see him holding his hand. Nico Vlad now coming out. And we're going for another world record. Vlad who was hot and cold here today is out after our third world record. 200.5 is the world record. He's got 201 on the bar. Though he's jumped from 190 to 201. He put 190 down on the first attempt. He was successful with his second attempt at 190. He's now jumped up to 201. If he can sky this it's a new world record. Nico Vlad from Romania. 23 years of age. Now the crowd hushed down now as they get set. Will this be world record number three here in Melbourne? There it goes. There it goes. No. He throws an average head. Couldn't do it. Big jump from 190 to 201. Bounce to the crowd. But he'll come back in the clean and jerk. The big Romanian. I wouldn't be surprised to see Vlad take this again for a fourth attempt. So easy. Just a little bit of a jump. He's got a little bit of a jump. I wouldn't be surprised to see Vlad take this again for a fourth attempt. So easy. Just a little bit of a fault at the end. Swung away slightly. Caused him to miss that world record. He waits well within his capability. Michael, you might explain that while we're waiting for Antonio Crestep to come out. This can take a fourth attempt.
